Supertool should work. I used it to successfully downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 without needing to root it. But you do have to unlock the bootloader though which will cause loss off all personal data.

Ok, First things first.
1) Go to settings --> about tablet --> tap build number 10 times and you will unlock developer options.
2) Backup to Developer options and check that usb debugging is on.
3) Power off the device. Then press and hold the volume up button and press and hold the power button at the same time till it boots into the bootloader. Then you have approx. 5 seconds to make a choice or it will continue to boot to the normal desktop. You don't have to select the choice, just press the volume keys to any choice to halt the timer.
4) On the computer, open cmd and go to the directory with adb.exe and fastboot.exe are located. Type adb devices to see if you get a response with a bunch of numbers followed by device.
5) On the device, press the volume key to highlight reboot fastboot, then press power button to select. You should be in fastboot.
6) On the computer type fastboot oem unlock and profit!!!!
Super tool does the same thing, plus a lot more, all automated for convenience.

That's a bummer. Without having USB debugging enabled, I'm not sure how to bypass that lock screen via computer. But are you sure you can't get into the boot loader via the volume up and power buttons? There should be a factory reset option in the boot loader iirc.

Yes I'm 100% sure ,I have been trying all day and no luck, but I have another plan up my sleeve and I ain't gonna give upp just wait until Friday and I will try to post the fix for this if I succeed

Just go into stock recovery. (Power off, then hold volume up and power button until screen, then select recovery) And do factory reset/wipe.

Stock Nexus 7 - Can't boot to recovery mode

Tried booting holding down the volume down button and power simultaneously and am able to select recovery mode but I just get a screen with the white Google name - recovery mode never starts (I have waited minutes) and I have to hold down the power button to get back to a normal startup. Also tried connecting to my PC via USB and booting holding down the power and the volume up and down buttons simultaneously. Then I get the belly-up Android and the Start selection but the volume keys don't change the selection and the power button does not cause a start - I have to power down by holding the power button in and restart normally. Any ideas?

You can use one of the root tool to reflash recovery mode if you don't know how to use ADB (which I don't really know.) You can flash CWM or TWKP or whatever it is. Then you should be able to do whatever you need to do. I have used the galaxy nexus tool kit v7.0.
Connect to pc
Shut down nexus 7
Hold volume down and power
At the next screen, press up until it says recovery mode
Press power
You then get the Android with red exclamation
Press power, hold it and then press volume up
This should give the recovery menu.
Result!

As I noted, I tried this and at the "At the next screen, press up until it says recovery mode" point, when I press the volume up button nothing happens, it stays with Start displayed (and pressing Power at that point has no effect - I have to press and hold Power for many seconds to force a shutdown).

Could you do anything more after rooting?
sikagoon7 said:
That is normal. If you press power and volume up you should get a recovery menu. It is pretty featureless so I assume you were expecting the likes of CWM or TWRP. These are custom recoveries that you need to download. To install them you need to unlock the bootloader and either manually flash them via fastboot or by using an application like goo manager or rommanager. Note that the application method requires root.

Manually load 4.1.2 --

One update - I could get to recovery using adb (adb reboot recovery) but once there adb could no longer see the Nexus (adb devices showed null). Have to try some more when I get home from work tonight.
Manual update to 4.1.2 is original reason for doing this but now I'd like to understand why I can't get to recovery mode the "standard" way.

On the final set of workaround instructions, it says "4. Select Recovery using vol buttons and press power button" - I could not "Select Recovery" because at that point my Nexus would not respond to any button pushes.
Install latest nexus 7 bootloader from my dropbox.

Use fastboot flash bootloader C:\>>>>>>\bootloader-grouper-3.14.IMG
Do NOT erase bootloader before you flash the new one. And after you have flashed the new one type; fastboot reboot bootloader and check the bootloader version to make sure you succeeded.

Though a series of misadventures I now have the saem problem as the OP of this thread where i can no longer get myself into recovery mode.
I had just doen a full backup and flashed a new version of the kernel when this occurred. Please don't tll me to use my volume keys to select Recovery. As the OP said, the keys no longer work. Theydid once but no longer. My N7 is stuck on the picture of Andy belly-up with Start shown but I cannot scroll up or down nor hit the power key to Start.
I download the file from two posts up but not sure what to do from there. FYI, I was fairly familiar with the ins and outs of Andoird, ADB, etc a year ago when developing apps but I've since retired. DO I need to get the downloaded file onto my device in order to use ADB to perform the fastboot commands above? Could someone please enumerate the steps for me to give me a jumpstart?
Edit: Whew! I got a tip to use Mskips' nexus 7 toolkit and got back into recovery and restored my backup and all is well so far. Knock...knock

I have the same--or at least a very similar--problem. I was trying to flash it back to the factory default with Nexus 7 toolkit. In the middle of the process my computer froze and I was forced to reboot. Now when I try to enter recovery I get a tiny "booting failed" in the upper left corner of the screen and nothing more. I can't see my N7 with my computer via USB or adb. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?
Exacty what happens to me. Trying to manually upgrade to 4.2 without root. I have update.zip on my n7. Do I need usb to be plugged into pc? I tried it both ways... when usb was plugged in I got past the red explanation mark, with option to install from adb, but not from sd. If not connected, nothing past explanation mark.
Probably just wait for ota... don't want to mess anything up.

(Solved!) Cannot boot into fastboot

I have tried at least 10 times with no results. I power down the device, hold both volume buttons and the power button, and nothing. I do get a vibrate after about 2 seconds, but nothing on the screen and then it vibrates every 6-7 seconds until I let go of the buttons. Kind of disappointed as I was all nice and comfortable on the couch, ready to use the Nexus 10 toolkit to do the all-in-one.
Anyone else experience this problem?

Try releasing then power button (but hold the other two) when you feel the first vibration. I've found that holding the power button can make a continuous reboot happen.

Tried that, but no luck. I also went a different route and tried to do it using mskip's toolkit in original android development. After installing the drivers and choosing the options to boot into fastboot, the device vibrated once and nothing showed up on the screen. BUT...when I refreshed the main menu the toolkit recognized the device as in fastboot mode. Really weird happenings with this, and starting to be concerned that my device has some issues. What point is a Google device if I can't unlock or root it?!

I've had the best luck holding the vol up/down button down first, then while that's down, pressing and holding power until the fastboot menu comes up.
Well, I am at a complete loss. Is this cause for replacement?

Ok, so, I'm not sure what to make of the recent events. Bottom line, I was booting to fastboot mode, but the screen was just blank. I followed the instructions via the toolkit just by selecting the buttons and hoping it was making the correct selections in fastboot mode. Now unlocked, rooted, and a happy man! Still not sure why the fastboot menu would not show up though.

If the toolkit does not recognize the device in fastboot, then there's a good chance you didn't install the drivers correctly. Did you follow the directions correctly to get the toolkit to recognize the device?

I got my device unlocked and the device did install the drivers. However, the problem was not that. But here's the thing, my N10 never showed me the fastboot menu. But connected to the PC it does show its connected. I never saw the screen that confirms "do you want to unlock the bootleader" (it goes completely black and vibrates every 5 seconds).
Workaround to unlock: For anyone with this problem, I just had to "guess" that menu (I think its clicking the vol button down once and then the power button). For me it bootlooped. so I pressed the Vol+ and power and in fastboot I booted to stock recovery, from there just wipe factory settings, and voila.
Weird tho that my fastboot screen was completely black

This is the Emergency thread!

Don't panic just ask here and I or WE THE NEXUS-10 COMMUNITY will gladly help!
In Case Of Emergency!
Hey,
I guess I should have looked before posting in panic..
Just made a new thread, but I will post it here as well!
So, I got my Nexus 10 today. Super nice tablet. I wanted to root it and unlock the bootloader - unlocking the bootloader went fine, and I managed to flash CWM recovery. However, I forgot the enable USB Debugging under developer tools before I started all this..
My question now, how do I get this thing to boot again? And what is the smartest move now to root it?
Thanks!
Did you get this fixed/ sorry for the late response Tapatalk unsubscribed me from my own thread.
This isnt an emergency. But pointless starting a new thread. Ive come from HTC so im new with the nexus series.
What would be the best way to:
Root, install CWM, install rom and kernel.
Ive seen a few different methods, but i just wondered whats the best most efficient way. Any opinions on a rom and kernel would be great to. Stable, smooth and customization aspects are the 3 main things, and wifi must work as i need it for work.
Before its attack the noob, im going out soon thats the only reason i have not researched properly.
thanks
Vizzy
This by far is the best method to unlocking and rooting it.

Also AOKP is stable 4.2.1 with lots of customizable options. But CM10.1 is good as well... Less options to customize though.

I would advise not using a toolkit unless you really must (kinda see little need for them on a Nexus device, but that's just me), but here's a brief rundown of what I do:
- Get Android SDK (not the ADT Eclipse Bundle thing; can use this though but it's like a 20MB vs 400MB download)
- Download USB Drivers and Platform Tools from SDK
- Add platform-tools Folder to Windows PATH (so I can run fastboot and adb commands from anywhere)
- Reboot N10 to Bootloader
- Connect it to PC and install ADB Bootloader driver (downloaded from SDK)
- Unlock Bootloader with fastboot oem unlock command
- Flash TWRP with fastboot command (CWM I guess works too, but I prefer TWRP)
- Reboot into Recovery
- Wipe everything (might have to format Data at first if coming straight from bootloader unlock and reboot to wipe everything else)
- Either transfer the custom ROM, Gapps, and (optional) Kernel zips to a flash drive and hook it to my N10, or adb push said zips to /sdcard
- Flash zips
- Wipe Cache/Dalvik from TWRP
- Reboot and profit
- If your going to install a custom ROM, you don't need to have an already rooted device prior to doing so (you can go straight from pure Stock to Custom)
- My preferred custom ROM is rasbeanjelly and my Kernel is franco.Kernel (rascarlo mentioned he might release an update later today for rasbeanjelly)
- I hear AOKP (and AOKP-based ROM's) has a problem with the navbar in Portrait mode (as in, it doesn't show). Just something to take note of if you use apps that force Portrait (like Google Wallet or Ingress for example)
Ohh I will probs do it that way then.
I already have fastboot and SDK installed on my laptop for my HTC can these be used or do I need specifics for the nexus 10? Obviously I'll need drivers for the n10 but is everything else the same as I already have.

How can I factory reset when I forgot my owner password?
Embarrassing situation...
I am the owner of a Nexus 10 that is set for multiple users. I got bored late the other night and changed my screen lock from a pattern to a password. It is now 3 days later I still can't recall the password. My wife does not employ a screen lock so I can still access her "side". Unfortunately, she is not the owner and therefore does not have "Factory Data Reset" as an option.
What are my options?
Factory Reset by going into the Bootloader.
If your tablet is on, power it off.
Press and hold Power until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it.
Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it.
Note: If at any point during the above steps your tablet becomes unresponsive, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds.

No command recovery screen

I have a brand new nexus 7 and I haven't unlocked the bootloader or rooted. I'm trying to sideload the kitkat update but whenever I try to boot into recovery it brings up the no command screen in recovery . From there I tried holding power and volume up and it just boots into the same screen that says no command. Is an unlocked bootloader required to sideload or is there something I'm doing wrong?
Did you try holding the power button and just tap the volume up button instead of holding it? Should work, it's what I did and it got me into recovery to finish the side load

[Q] Stock Nexus 4 - Committed Suicide (Stuck On Bootloader Screen)

Hey guys, long timer lurker but finally got an account today! But I'm afraid I don't come bearing good news
Little backstory: I had bought my sexy Nexy within the first 30 sec. that online orders were opened in the U.S. (and I managed to snag this puppy during class just in time). Suffice to say, I love my phone. Never rooted it, never blinged it out, as stock as they come.
Unfortunately, last night my phone was sitting on my desk and I noticed it had restarted by itself. Come to find out that it won't get past the bootloader screen (where the 4 google circles dance around, sorta like drunk hippies dancing in a field. Best analogy I could think of ). I've been searching online, and I've been finding a lot of mixed solutions to fix this issue. And even most of those applied only to rooted phones, or to people who bricked theirs while rooting.
I had backed my phone's data about a month ago, but my last month's worth of photos (mom & pops' 25th anniversary, mom's b-day, a bunch of awesome events with my friends, parties, etc) never got a chance to be backed up. Since I know how awesome the N4 forum is on here, I wanted help from you guys in regards to what I can do in order to backup/recover my data (or at least, the photos). I don't want to do a factory reset because I fear it would just wipe all data, and of course connecting it to my computer while it's stuck inevitably on the bootloader screen doesn't do anything.
Some important things to note/which might help:
I got the 4.4.3 update a few days ago, not sure if that did anything.
App sideloading is enabled on my phone (however, I'm not sure if I ever enabled the developed mode on my phone).
What options do I have in regards to recovering my pics/data from my poor Nexy?
I'm sorta willing to try anything at this point, because from what I've read, an eventual factory reset is inevitable.
Thanks for your help! :highfive:
Hi there,
Dont factory reset just yet. Are u able to go to recovery? If so, try just wiping cache and dalvik cache then reboot system.
Dont think your bricked.
Good luck and cheers.

Hi! Would you mind walking me step-by-step through how I can go into recovery mode and wipe the cache/dalvik cache and then reboot? I don't want to mess up any steps and make my situation worse lol. What will the recovery-mode screen look like, and what options should I stay away from?
Thanks for your help!

Turn off your phone. When it's off, power it on by pressing the power button and volume up button. It should bring you into recovery mode. Navigate using the volume buttons and select options using the power button.
If there's an option to "Wipe Cache/Dalvik Cache", choose that and you won't lose anything, first boot will take a while.
If there isn't any Wipe Cache option, there should be a "Wipe Data" option, this will reset the phone but things in the SD Card SHOULD NOT be erased (at least in custom recovery).
Can't provide screenshot cuz you can't do that on recovery mode and I've never use stock recovery.
Good luck.

@ uchihakurtz beat me to it:thumbup:
Well explaned, except for one thing:
Once u pushed power + volume up u will end up in bootloader mode. From here navigate with volume key to recoverymode and press powerbutton. Now u will end up booting to recoverymode. In here u can choose "wipe cache" and "wipe dalvikcache".
Good luck.

LOL, I never remembered whether it's up or down since there's always an advanced reboot option (for me), thanks for clearing it up dude
DO NOT wipe data in the stock recovery. It will wipe everything
This is tedious but will backup your device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20868527

So, if I have this correct, once the phone's off:
1) Press POWER and VOLUME + button at the same time to enter bootloader mode
2) Using VOLUME +/- key to navigate to RECOVERY MODE option
3) Press POWER button to select RECOVERY MODE option
4) Inside RECOVERY MODE, navigate to WIPE CACHE and WIPE DALVIK CACHE using VOLUME +/- button
Is that correct? And in step 1, is it POWER and VOLUME + or POWER and VOLUME - to go into bootloader mode? I keep seeing Power & Volume - in several threads when it comes to booting into recovery mode.
And secondly, should my phone be connected to my laptop during this entire process? Or just have the phone solo and foreveralone :crying: by itself?
Finally, once I complete Step 4, will me phone restart automatically or will I have to power it down + power it back up again?
Thanks!

Will this work even though my phone's stuck in the bootloader loop? From the gist of it, that post makes it seems as if your phone needs to be able to actually work in order to unlock the stock bootloader using that method along with Android SDK + Android SDK Platform tools.
Thanks again for the help!

If your bootloader is locked you're going to have a problem. With it locked there's no way you're going to be able to recover your files. Adb will work if you can boot into recovery

Thanks for your help, I'm not extremely familiar with rooting/using ADB, etc so I'm having a huge panic attack.
What would you recommend is the best course of action? If I choose to pursue using ADB to backup my phone's data, would you please mind pointing me to the noob-friendly threads (or even help me yourself by holding my hand along the process ) for:
1) Step-by-step of how to properly install Android SDK and 1.a) How to enable ADB functionality?
2) How to correctly enter Recovery mode on my N4 (button combos) and whether I should attempt to wipe cache/Dalvik?
3) How to use Android SDK/ADB to backup my data from my nexus 4?
Again, I really appreciate your help. As you can imagine, I'm really worried about losing photos of some huge moments in my life and I'm slightly overwhelmed at the different methods people seem to be using (and trying to figure out whether those apply to me). Thanks.

To setup adb. Google 15 second adb drivers xda. That'll give you everything you need.
To boot into recovery you need to boot into the bootloader. Vol down plus power button. Then use the vol keys to navigate to recovery

Great, I'll give that a try and let you know how it goes.
I had a general question: When I boot into recovery, how do I find out if I have USB debugging enabled? Is there some way for me to find out if I did indeed enable it a while ago (I can't quite remember)?
And if I enter Recovery mode, is there a way for me to exit this mode and turn my phone off/restart it (or do I HAVE to select one of the options?) I want to go in and see if I have USB debugging enabled first, and then turn my phone off without wiping any caches, etc, and then download + setup ADB.
Thanks!

After entering recovery and wiping both caches there is an option to reboot system. U can use this to boot your phone back up again.
(Sorry, it indeed is vol down + power button to enter bootloader menu) my bad
