Stock Nexus 7 - Can't boot to recovery mode - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tried booting holding down the volume down button and power simultaneously and am able to select recovery mode but I just get a screen with the white Google name - recovery mode never starts (I have waited minutes) and I have to hold down the power button to get back to a normal startup. Also tried connecting to my PC via USB and booting holding down the power and the volume up and down buttons simultaneously. Then I get the belly-up Android and the Start selection but the volume keys don't change the selection and the power button does not cause a start - I have to power down by holding the power button in and restart normally. Any ideas?

You can use one of the root tool to reflash recovery mode if you don't know how to use ADB (which I don't really know.) You can flash CWM or TWKP or whatever it is. Then you should be able to do whatever you need to do. I have used the galaxy nexus tool kit v7.0.

Connect to pc
Shut down nexus 7
Hold volume down and power
At the next screen, press up until it says recovery mode
Press power
You then get the Android with red exclamation
Press power, hold it and then press volume up
This should give the recovery menu.
Result!

As I noted, I tried this and at the "At the next screen, press up until it says recovery mode" point, when I press the volume up button nothing happens, it stays with Start displayed (and pressing Power at that point has no effect - I have to press and hold Power for many seconds to force a shutdown).

You need to press volume up a few times, until you see Recovery.
This guide worked for me, so thanks AMoosa.

Yes, I said I tried that and pressing volume up has no effect - it stays at "Start" and even pressing Power at that point has no effect, I have to press and hold power to force a full shutdown.

Same problem here. A full stock re flash didn't help either.

Could you do anything more after rooting?

sikagoon7 said:
That is normal. If you press power and volume up you should get a recovery menu. It is pretty featureless so I assume you were expecting the likes of CWM or TWRP. These are custom recoveries that you need to download. To install them you need to unlock the bootloader and either manually flash them via fastboot or by using an application like goo manager or rommanager. Note that the application method requires root.

Manually load 4.1.2 --
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-nexus-7-android-412

One update - I could get to recovery using adb (adb reboot recovery) but once there adb could no longer see the Nexus (adb devices showed null). Have to try some more when I get home from work tonight.
Manual update to 4.1.2 is original reason for doing this but now I'd like to understand why I can't get to recovery mode the "standard" way.

I meant through the menu selection on the Nexus itself, not through adb. And as I noted, once I got to the recovery screen, adb could no longer see the device.

Well, with 4.1.2 (OTA) I can now get to the recovery screen by using the simultaneous power + volume button pushes, no adb required.

Is that's what you were looking for? The side load menu? I thought you were saying recovery didn't work. Recovery has to work for you to even use the power volume up trick.

See here -
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-forums-nexus-7-hard-reset-questions
On the final set of workaround instructions, it says "4. Select Recovery using vol buttons and press power button" - I could not "Select Recovery" because at that point my Nexus would not respond to any button pushes.

Install latest nexus 7 bootloader from my dropbox.
http://db.tt/cgk5NmQn
This fixes the boot loader bug and now you can enter recovery from the bootloader screen.

I cannot emphasize this enough!!!!!!!!!!! I bricked my first one this way.
Use fastboot flash bootloader C:\>>>>>>\bootloader-grouper-3.14.IMG
Do NOT erase bootloader before you flash the new one. And after you have flashed the new one type; fastboot reboot bootloader and check the bootloader version to make sure you succeeded.
Good luck!

Though a series of misadventures I now have the saem problem as the OP of this thread where i can no longer get myself into recovery mode.
I had just doen a full backup and flashed a new version of the kernel when this occurred. Please don't tll me to use my volume keys to select Recovery. As the OP said, the keys no longer work. Theydid once but no longer. My N7 is stuck on the picture of Andy belly-up with Start shown but I cannot scroll up or down nor hit the power key to Start.
I download the file from two posts up but not sure what to do from there. FYI, I was fairly familiar with the ins and outs of Andoird, ADB, etc a year ago when developing apps but I've since retired. DO I need to get the downloaded file onto my device in order to use ADB to perform the fastboot commands above? Could someone please enumerate the steps for me to give me a jumpstart?
Edit: Whew! I got a tip to use Mskips' nexus 7 toolkit and got back into recovery and restored my backup and all is well so far. Knock...knock

I have the same--or at least a very similar--problem. I was trying to flash it back to the factory default with Nexus 7 toolkit. In the middle of the process my computer froze and I was forced to reboot. Now when I try to enter recovery I get a tiny "booting failed" in the upper left corner of the screen and nothing more. I can't see my N7 with my computer via USB or adb. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

Exacty what happens to me. Trying to manually upgrade to 4.2 without root. I have update.zip on my n7. Do I need usb to be plugged into pc? I tried it both ways... when usb was plugged in I got past the red explanation mark, with option to install from adb, but not from sd. If not connected, nothing past explanation mark.
Probably just wait for ota... don't want to mess anything up.

Help needed.....Galaxy Tab always restart

Help......my Tab is having problem....it always restart....i cannot reset the factory data .Is that anyway to take out the battery to reset all data?anyone try b4???
Closed.................
how you resolve it?
can you share it?
i have same issue too
Start with your tab turned off. Then it's either, Hold Volume Up + Power Button at the same time or it's hold Volume Down + Power Button at the same time. One will boot you into fastboot, the other way will boot you into the stock recovery. You want recovery. You will know its right cause you will see an upside down triangle. Then hit i think it was search button or one of the volume buttons to get a menu to pop up. Highlight factory reset and hit the power button. If you boot into fastboot mode and not recovery, the screen will be black and will say please load OS or whatever. Just hold down power button to power off and try the other way.
Bear with me if directions are a little off. Gave my wife my tab months ago so I haven't had to do that in awhile

I tried connecting the device to my computer via USB before selecting recovery. When I do that, volume up/down and power do nothing! So I have to reboot by holding power again. What do you think now?
I didn't realize I had to update the bootloader I was in the process of updating my ROM from SmoothROM 4.1.2 to Modaco 4.2 and it did not flash properly. So at this point, I cannot boot up. I'm stuck here.

I'm new to nexus family too and had a lot of problems with it. (Never have problems but this recovery cost me a lot of time).
The solution is:
When you are EXACTLY at the red exclamation mark screen.
1) Press and hold POWER
2) Press volume UP.
That should show the options in less than 2 seconds.

Yeap, same thing, I press and hold the power and then I press the volume up, nothing happens. I even formatted the phone completely using the 4.2.2 image from google, nothing, the no command error keeps coming up, the only way to have a recovery is flashing CWM touch.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
I've got my N4 maybe a month ago, I installed the 4.2.2 OTA as soon as I got it, the I proceeded to unlock it and root it, one day someone recommended to clear the cache of the phone using the stock recovery (which I thought I had / to fix another problem that I was having) I went to fastboot and tried to access recovery, BOOM, just an android laying down with a red exclamation mark, no "no command" error at all. I downloaded CWM touch and flashed it using Nexus Root Toolkit, that worked fine, but I didn't want a custom recovery and also I needed to fix a 3G latency problem that I was having, after some reading I saw that someone recommended a full flash using the stock google image.
A couple of days I proceeded to flash the factory image, I installed it, after that I did a factory reset from android itself. After doing all that I wanted to clear the cache with the stock recovery just in case, BOOM, an an android laying down with a red exclamation mark and this time with a "no command" error. Tried the trick of holding the power and pressing the volume up, NOTHING HAPPENS!
Right now I am using CWM Touch.
Any suggestion?
Thank you.
No real solution??? Sad...

Nothing, this answer is unhelpful
I have this issue as well. I tried to "unroot" my N4 (and Im a noob at this), and I think I did something wrong because when I access recovery mode from the bootloader I see the "dead android" but no matter what I do I dont see the control/menu. I tried:
- holding all buttons at the same time
- holding the power button and the down button (in sequence)
- holding the power button and the up button (in sequence)
So now I can not boot my Nexus, I can not wipe my Nexus and I can not access it from the PC. I was running 4.3 and I used the "How to Unroot Nexus 4 to Stock 4.2 Jelly Bean on Windows!" youtube guide ( I am not allowed to post links) to unroot my device (nexus 4), where I fail at 8:45, I simply dont see that menu popping up. Instead, my Nexus shuts down or reboots.
Please help
Is there no fix for this?
I decided to go back to stock to get 4.3. I flashed 4.2.2 using the Nexus toolkit and then got 4.3 via an OTA after this I rooted my phone. As the OTA worked I would imagine that the stock recovery was working. When I tried to install the latest OTA I got the no command issue. I can flash cwm recovery no problem. But when I try to flash stock recovery either via a toolkit or via fastboot command it does not work - no command. And holding in power and then volume up doe nothing. Any advice? I suppoe I cando a full wipe flash the stock 4.3 image and see if this helps. Has anyone had any success fixing this problem?

It seems like the recovery is not there.

Seems that you have the stock recovery installed (that Android laying on its back with a red triangle is the stock recovery).
If I'm not missunderstanding your issue, it shouldn't really be an issue but it's just like how it should be.

"No Command" issue solved for Zuum 9330
I want to thank every one of you guys. I had same issue with my phablet. By reading your comments I got ideas to try some key combinations, and factory reset my phone. Here is what I did:
1) Power down the phone
2) Press and hold "volume up", then Press and hold "power" button until Android logo with the message "no command" shows up
3) Press and hold "volume down", then Press "back" button then release "back" button and the menu will show up. Then release "volume down".
4) use "volume up" or "volume down" to navigate menu
5) to execute selection, use "home" button
I hope it helps someone.
If so, please tell me.
Total first timer, flash to stock as had messed up sd card partition trying to flash custom ROM, really worried when couldn't access recovery after stock flash. Thank you thank you thank you, this totally worked!!!
thank you a lot. saved my phone. i thought i will through away the nexus 4 but the combination of no command power button and volume up did well
Hope this helps, you press and release volume up! worked perfectly
Performing a factory reset may take some time, so make sure that you plug your device into a power source before you start. If your phone becomes unresponsive at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the Power button for several seconds.
If your phone is on, turn it off.
Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery".
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command".
While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button once.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it.
Press the Volume Down button seven times to highlight "Yes - erase all user data" and press the Power button to select it.
After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select the option to reboot your device.
When you've finished, follow these steps to restore your data.

In Developer options, enable the Advanced Reboot.
The 3 button combo will work, it's just a matter of timing. Remove and replace the battery, hold vol up + home, then power, holding all three, and when it vibrates, let go of power only.
You could also hook up in USB Debugging mode and issue the command:
adb reboot recovery
And if you don't have a developer option go into about phone and tap build number 7 times.

Some people, including myself, cannot get it to work with the standard procedure...the solution is to basically do it twice. Here's a copy/paste of the instructions:
Long press the power button and choose "power off". Give your phone a few seconds to turn off completely. Once it's off, press and hold these 3 buttons at the same time: POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME. Look at the top left of the screen - as soon as you see little blue text saying entering recovery, let go of all buttons immediately...but be ready...if your phone vibrates (it might be trying to reboot normally again), press and hold those same buttons again until you see the blue text again...then let go immediately. Now you will see your recovery!

Cool
CWM recovery only requires you to push the volume up key and then press the power key until the phone vibrates and then let go of the power button only. When the blue lettering appears, let go of the volume up. The home button should only be required with TWRP.

Whatever the reason, that is not the case with my phone and many others. I've read several threads of people having the same issue. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the OUDHS CWM w/ auto-loki or what.
I've never heard of letting go of the power button only while still pressing volume up, but I gave it a try just to see...it did get me into CWM recovery but only after doing it twice, similar to the method I wrote above.
I have tried letting go of both volume up and power (no pressing home at all) and never found a way to get into recovery.
Anyways, it seems there's no harm in pressing the home button either way and it's probably easier than letting go of the power button and still holding volume up...and easier to explain too lol.

You need to read... Seriously, you are going to brick your phone. Do not try to install any custom recovery or ROM of any kind on MF3.
Why can't people read?

My minor issue is that when I boot to recovery (twrp) it get to the twrp splash screen then freeze. Takes me another reboot or two before recovery really launches.
Tried reinstalling recovery and fixing permission, etc.. but same deal. Anyone have thoughts on this?
I boot into recovery all the time but I have to hold volume up and home button.
Bump!
I'm having the same issue. What I did was that I had the CWM recovery installed and tried to reset the flash counter. Now the phone won't boot into the recovery, it just boots up as usual when I press vol up+home+power up. I appreciate any help! :/

Can you get the blue text in the upper left corner of the screen to appear at any time?
In my case, trying to get into recovery via the 3 buttons is a matter of very precise timing if I try pressing all 3 buttons at the same time. The instant I see the blue text I let go of everything and it works. Hold it for even a fraction of a second longer and the blue disappears and it goes into a normal boot. It works much better if I press Vol Up, then add Power, then add Home. I'm doing that sequence fairly quickly but the point is I'm not trying to press 3 buttons at the exact same time.
But I'm using CWM so I don't need the 3rd button...
From a powered-down state I hold Vol Up then Power and hold both through the vibration until the blue text appears and it goes into CWM recovery just fine. There seems to be a bit more leeway in terms of how fast you need to let go this way although I just tested and holding about a half second too long caused it to bounce out of recovery and do a normal boot. Let go immediately when you see the blue.
Phone won't boot..
So after using CASUAL, my phone rebooted, and got stuck on the splash screen with RECOVERY BOOTING.. in the top left corner. I pull the battery, try to do a normal reboot; takes me to the same screen. Trying the 3 button combo for recovery; same thing. Any suggestions?? I am NOT on MF3 Firmware.
**EDIT** Should have looked into it more before posting, but Found my solution returning to STOCK

You mean't Android 4.3 and the recovery does this for security.
To access the recovery you have to press volume up and power until it unlocks the menu.

You have to keep pressing it and holding it until it unlocks.
Mine and the others unlocks fine so yours should work.

Wait, a red light?
Are you on low battery?
Maybe it is either a low battery command, access denied to to too many attempts or incorrect combination.
Try doing the same to the up and down keys followed by the power.

Battery are full
The battery are full,
I tried doing all the combination , my recovery is dead!!!
any ideas?

I also have the exact same issue. I never tried entering stock recovery before now and I tried to do it now, after updating OTA to 4.3 and rooting with wugfresh toolkit, 1.6.8. Regardless of how many times I have tried, it just reboots normally and can't access the stock recovery.

So you cannot access the recovery using the bootloader?, if so then it is probably corrupted.
I have the stock recovery image file here which you can flash via Fastboot.

I imagined the same. The toolkit itself, is giving you the option of reflashing the stock recovery, I think that I will try this at first. The weird thing is that the phone boots up normally, works as it should and is rooted successfully.
Actually there was no need to flash anything new. I finally made it to work. When in the "No Command" screen, you have to press the following:
1) Press only the power button first
2) While holding the power button, press the vol up button for a couple of seconds
3) Let go ONLY of the vol up button, while still pressing the power button.
Tested and working!
Just looked this up for a customer at my shop and works like a champ. Thank you

Excellent. Thanks for that. It was doing my head in.
The question is though will OTA updates still work? And the answer is yes. I flashed back to 4.2.2 and the 4.3 update came through OK. Happy days as I may well pass my N4 on soon and it needs to work 100% for a non tech wife.
