[Q] Pros and cons of Sprint S4 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hello,
I have been using an S2 for years, and while receiving/sending text messages my phone locked up Steady blue light, hold power button on and a momentary led off period and then a steady blue light. The short story apparently I have a bricked phone.
I really like the S2, and I was all ready to upgrade to the S4 and then I started reading reviews and became a bit worried about the S4 and the screen being ""more fragile" than previous models among various other issues including poor wifi and battery etc.etc. I would appreciate some user input on the S4, good and/or bad, and if it looks grim I may just pick up a used S2 and stick with that.
Thanks!
Tom

Best phone I've had (so far) and I've owened about three dozen over the past 30 years of all makes, manufactures, operating systems and carriers. I've dropped my s4 a dozen times and have had no issues (and I only used a screen protector and soft 'caseology' case. Though I did just acuire an Otterbox waterproof jobber; but it's useless without BT because people can't hear ME)

I really love my S4 from sprint. I have been using it for about three months now. No complaints at all thus far. I use an otterbox case. The raised rubber ridges do a very good job of keeping the screen protected.

I upgraded from a S2 and it's been a night and day difference for me.
Faster, better looking, much better screen in terms of clarity, detail, and legibility under sunlight, better battery life, more case choices & other accessories, better sound, reliable & fast-locking GPS, and more custom ROM options. It has also been very stable and easy to keep up its stability & performance.
Although I was very fond of my S2 b/c it was my first smartphone, I gladly left it behind.
I also daily a Nexus 5 with a monthly T-Mobile SIM plan and I like my S4 more. Before that, I owned a Note 3 for a couple weeks but returned it b/c it was too big for my pockets, especially my work dress pants.

That S2 is going to feel like an old Texas Instruments calculator once you fire up the S4.

I agree with All of the Above and since I upgraded w/o knowledge of Knox I've not rooted this yet. The phone has a lot of customizing already which makes it a lot easier to handle not being rooted.
MY Only issue is Sprint getting ready to add Spark LTE which means I would need a TRI Band phone and this is Not! I feel ripped off by Sprint to be pushing the S4 so strong knowing they would be adding a service this phone can not use.
My Sprint tech said current TRI band is LG2 but I want a phone with a sd card and removable battery. Not sure because didn't want to get my hopes up but the S5 maybe TRI? I figure why tick myself off more by looking at phones I can't get until this 2 yr contract expires.
All that to say check the Spark LTE service for your area and if it is going to happen get yourself a TRI band phone.
Disclaimer: 2 of my Sprint contacts disagree about Spark because once says reality is OKC is not a major market for Spark yet and by the time we get it I'll be up gradable? The other says we will have the service. So for me it is a 50/50 issue.

Really even after 4 months from the publication of that article? I've seen triband phones in LA and they work fine.

NO hadn't seen it Thanks that makes things a whole lot better. I'm with you I couldn't pass up on a Pre Black Friday Sale at Sam's .96 cent S4.
Just quite carrying my rooted 4.4.2 S3 (cracked screen) wifi only use because I needed to just stop w/root and use my new phone. Been running great but had junked up memory w/too much stuff so clean factory reset yesterday been a lot better so far. My son's iP5 was having issues because of google voice and sprint integration so I've left it off this phone for me for now until I figure out if i need it or not.

Guess it is on an actual phone by phone basis depending on the coverage area. Where I live in OKC, older area of the city everything is poor. Sprint has towers close by but my service is very spotty, cable has more issues. U-verse just dropped in the area however they said it wouldn't because they didn't want to have all the issues with the older neighborhoods and historical preservation.
I can have 4G on my phone while my wife with the same phone sitting next to me has 3G. Sprint tech's here say all issue are because we are not a major market.

That's all well and good but the internet is littered with Sprint tri-band phone owners talking about the issues that are brought up in that article. I was merely pointing out something to consider when thinking about upgrading to a tri-band phone on the Sprint network that's all.

Thank you all for your input, I appreciate it greatly! I currently have the S4 and can say that it does indeed survive a fall (not more than 10 feet outside the Sprint door). I have it rooted and am enjoying the speed (both LTE and CPU) gains I have made with the upgrade. :good:
One thing I never gave a single thought about was the dedicated button, depending on how you hold your phone, it can be a pita to actuate! I may go against the status quo, but I really like the soft keys of the S2 and the more centered back button of the S2. Time will tell, and those are some trivial things, but some very often used items.
For those interested I used Saferoot, and ran it twice in order to get busy box installed. I must have toggled a security setting "Verify Apps" as it blocked the install on the first attempt. Phone came with 4.3 MK5 installed and I honestly couldn't tell you how the battery is as I have had my hands on it non-stop. I much prefer the older Samsung charge/USB cords, the new ones are extremely stiff. I forseee more charge port problems

The home button isn't hard to reach if you've got real man hands. Haha I'm just kidding. But the stiff charger will loosen up the more you use it. I'm able to roll it up and throw it into my front picket with no problem.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

lol, my man hands have failed me, remember - I dropped my phone already haha! Also, I briefly read about the info concerning tri-band phones and had no idea that the S4 had the T variant. I wondered what the spark video was when I booted up my phone and thought they were going to tease me for 2 years until I am eligible for another upgrade
I officially have the SPH-L720T :good:
/me makes mental note for rom selection

I recommend it! I just upgraded today from my Red HTC One and damn it's blazing fast!!! I'm running the latest S4 with the Spark LTE bands on it and it makes the phone stand out at how quick it loads videos, pages, anything! Get it.

Fortunate to get the tri band that is a soft spot for me because of Sprint pushing the S4's so much only to release tri band and Spark. I could of held off a while to get it verses jumping early for the S4.

Ex Dell Streak er

I'm surprise no one started a thread just yet on this so let me be the first. I'm a former Dells streak user and one of those who can't rid myself of the 5 inch display, use it up to the latest rom by Djsteve on streakdroid 2.4. got myself a Gnote for couple of weeks now and is currently on Cassie's literom KL3.
here is my like and dislike with Galaxy note as compare to Streak:
Like:
Super Amoled HD makes streak pixel looks so rough in comparison
For factor, lighter and easier to hold even though screen is 0.2 inch bigger than streak.
GPS lock is blazing fast
Superb Battery life -consider this if you need more juice-http://www.obostore.com/5000mah-extended-battery-for-samsung-galaxy-note-p-3925-c-198.html
Picture and movie quality!
Dislike:
ROM for Note at infancy stage, can't even get launcher to work flawlessly
Can't run many games due to compatibility(screen not maximize or apps cant run)
Physical button location. Streak button is all at the right place for one hand thumb usage and correctly position when use horizontally. (streaker who had migrate will know what i mean)
this is what i can think of and this is not a review, i know its not fair to compare both hardware as both are from a different time and in gadget time, one year means 1 decade in human time
Ex streaker, please share your thoughts.
Streakers, post question if you have any.
I am an ex Streaker who was "forced" to go to a Samsung Infuse when my precious Streak's screen cracked... I have been drooling over the Note for months - only thing holding me back is fear of being shut off by AT&T (I am on an "unlimited" smartphone plan and I do not want to lose that). Great thread - I am curious what the ex streakers think of the Note!
Just waiting for the white Note to be released in the UK then I'll add to this thread ... Hurry up Samsung !!

Streak
Im an ex streak owner forced to the Note after suprise suprise, breaking the lcd on the streak.
Comparison wise, the streak was good, but im sorry to say the streak is an amateurs toy compared to the note, th Gnote is a real beast humming along, the streak could never compare, as for roms, people can talk Dj Steve all day long, there isnt a single rom on that forum that actually worked as it should have, especially streakdroid.
Whats all this talk of people being cut off their data plans for having a streak, Im on an unlimited data plan in the uk with 3 and no ones ever said anything to me about my data usage, ive heard this a few times on this forum now, is this only an AT&T issue or something??
This device is basically eveything everyone who had the 5" had hoped the opus one would be. Rooting and roming seems to be easier than on the streak too somehow. I only lament it not having nfc or lte or hsdpa2 or 4g connectivity as was stated months back. There will probably be an updated version somewhere along the road too. Rumors already fart in the general direction of 6" too. Which, btw, is basically the maximum i am willing to carry, as long as the bezel ain't too big anyway. The pentile matrix samoled display is a bit of a cheat because it only uses 8 instead of 12 subpixels too. BUT the display is both capacitive AND induktive and the s-pen is basically a wacom stylus pen.

Also an ex Streak user here. I loved the streak at first, but after a few months I got really fed up with its temperamental nature. It was very slow at times and became just a hindrance. I couldn't wait to get rid of it and upgraded to a galaxy s2 as soon as I could. Then a few months after that I saw that the Note had been announced and began drooling over that. Had a few problems with pink spots on S2 camera so I used that as an excuse to complain to Orange UK, got out of the contract early, started a new one and got the Galaxy Note free.
Its just such a different experience to using the Streak. Much faster (although I do think some of the 3rd party launchers were smoother on the streak), much better screen, nicer to hold, s pen is fantastic, and as some others have said...the s2 now feels like a little toy.

Graemeg, don't worry that wont happen on UK networks. Its only US networks that do that for some reason.....it seems absolutely crazy that in this day and age, and in such supposedly free country that that should be allowed to happen.. .what the hell is this world coming to. Come on all you AT &T users, get together and do something about it.

It looks like AT&T had the wrong IMEIs in its database, and it was incorrectly identifying the Note as a tablet. Apparently it's been fixed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402835
what is the deal on LTE for AT&T? Should I wait for the AT&T LTE version - or just go ahead and buy the UK version from Amazon?
I'm an ex-Streaker and have had my Note for about 2 days now (Euro/UK version) I love it. I was about to get a Galaxy Nexus but went into VZW on launch day, held up my Streak to it, and realized I can't go back to a smaller screen (4.65" in ICS is about 4.4" or so due to soft buttons).
I am a former Dell Streak owner / early adopter.
I chase new technology and when I heard of the Note I became consumed with interest.
My Streak was great. I used it a lot. Thankfully, I was able to sell it.
But... the Note is SO MUCH further beyond the Streak. The screen. The feel in hand. The speed. The camera. The OS. Leaps and bounds ahead of the Streak and it's not even close.
But... if I had a small complaint; the Note's side buttons are easy to hit in the gripping process. Sometimes the easy press is good. Sometimes not. But I'm learning to avoid them.
I used to own a streak, and now own a note. This phone really is what the streak should have been. All the djsteve roms couldn't make the streak a frustrationless phone, the note is without modding it.
Everybody thinking about jumping ship, do it!
AT&T
Sorry for all you guys having those issues, thats just awful the way this company has behaved.
Im on the 3 network in the uk, and i know 3 and vodafone allow complete tethering over here, so there never seems to be an issue over it, although 3 are the only network that give TRUE unlimited data to their subscribers.
I do not have home broadband, i do not see the need, my friends are on 21mbps Broadband and even at good times only achieve DL rates of 5mbps, i tether my NOTE via usb tethering and achieve between 6-10mbps DL rates.
Some months ive downloaded about 10 to 20 gig, so, i see no need to ever invest in broadband that will never match what i have now.
I did read that the AT&T issue is now resolved, fingers crossed for you all, the note is probably in the category of a HYBRID as the streak very much was, but this does not give AT&T the right to spoil your enjoyment of the digital age, i hope you guys across the pond have no further issues, its a shambolic statement of corporate America based on greed, but then ive never heard anyone say anything good about them.
Dont get me wrong guys, i dont mean to DIS the streak, for what it was it was nifty, in its day, but it didnt help that the makers were DELL, and the amount of flaws in the item straight from the box in the uk were awful, my friend had 4 on the trot replaced, upon turning it on straight from the box, BOOTLOOPS, lmao, she soon ditched it and demanded a blackberry, i dunno which is worse LOL, then theres the terrible screen issue made of FEATHER glass, drop it from more that 3 inches from the ground and thats ya screen done for..........
What i did love, was how easy it was to customise, flash, reflash, revert to stock, flash, Wow, it really was childs play, this phone really was unbrickable, and i think that was its best feature, but still were very lucky, if Dell had never made and failed with the streak we may never have seen the GNote, SAMSUNG YOU ROCK......GOD BLESS AMERICA, AT&T you suuucccckkkk mannnnn.
I still have my Streak but I really enjoy and like my Note.
Mine should be here Dec 23
Ordered it from Amazon, should be here Friday.
I was also one of those that emailed at&t, and got the same "we screwed up" calls from them saying that it was a computer issue, so after seeing others get the same response, fingers crossed...I ordered it.
One way or another, it WILL work, or at&t will get another call back (lady gave me a number to call back if I had issues)...
Bought my Streak Oct 2010, rooted it to install 2.2 after waiting for at&t to do something, Dell to do something and just did it myself. After various tweaks...it's about as far as I can go. It's been a pretty good device, never really had any issues other than pretty much zero carrier interest or manufacturer interest...when Michael Dell pretty much said screw Android, that was it for me.

Do they have LTE in your area? If that is a benefit to you, then hold off and hope at&t actually gets it here in the 1st quarter of 2012. Me personally, H+ is about all we'll have for a while, I don't see the market I'm in getting LTE until 2014, if their slow rollout of H then H+ was any indication. Most of the time, other than checking a few emails, maybe a webpage or weather radar, I use wi-fi or hot spots, so the LTE version wasn't a consideration. Also, the branded at&t version won't have the home button, but the 4 capacitive buttons like the streak does, that is if you believe the leaks on the net, plus, I don't think at&t has a branded android device with a home button? or maybe it has something to do with some goofy patent that Apple has LOL.

I considered the same thing, and got my Note just 2 weeks ago. (I'm in Baltimore)
We do have LTE here(baltimore city), though not where I live(though since I have wifi at home, that point is mute)
I decided to jump on the unlocked deal since I'm out of contract already, and wanted to use a iPad SIM for data only use. I use google voice for text/talk.
It's almost for sure that when ATT gets the Note it will have the snapdragon processor and NOT for exynos. It will possibly loose the physical home button. It will have horrible battery life(or at least worse then H+ version), just as Verizon LTE phones do.
I'm not willing to give those things up for ATT/locked down phone. H+ is very satisfying when browsing and watching netflix. Besides downloading files, I don't see where I need that kind of speed on the go. In Baltimore I get 6-7 down and 1.5-2 up. Not to shabby when I am just loading a few megabytes at a time to check gizmodo or watch a flick.
"Me too" - or rather I will be once the Note arrives. I have had a Streak since Autumn 2010 and it's been "ok" and I love the screen size - being large and fat fingered myself
I finally ordered the Note after seeing the official confirmation of support for ICS earlier this week. I bought from Amazon Germany on Tuesday and it's already showing it's with my local Citylink ("****tylink") this morning. About £100 cheaper from Germany than Amazon in the UK - or at least Amazon UK fulfilled.
I am looking forward to my Note as my Xmas present even if I was expecting it next week.
It arrived after some issue (Xmas I guess) where it lived in their depot in MK for 36 hours. First impressions: The screen is stunning. Same WxH as the Streak but thinner - once it's in it's cheapo case, it's still thinner.
Merry Xmas all

Trade my Note for Galaxy Nexus or HTC OneX

Hey folks, First off, I LOVE my note. It's the only reason I stuck it out this long but to make a long story short it almost left my daughter stranded in a very unfamiliar place yesterday. I am currently on T-mobile and as you know we don't get much love as far as service with the Note. So I put up with the signal bar with a nice pretty little x in it many times because I flat out love my phone even though my wife would have 4 bars of 4g. Well this incident made me realize that while having an awesome phone that barely works as a phone or just about anything else without wifi that having service and signal is more important. So here is what I'm looking for:
Trade: My unlocked galaxy note (Currently running Asylum ICS V09) with black speck case and has liquid armor for display protection.
Want: Galaxy Nexus or and HTC One X ( maybe S for T-mobile as well )
Also willing to sell for $400 flat ( Nothing less will be considered )
So before I go to the craigslist or feebay I wanted to give my trusted XDA people a first shot at it So PM me if interested!
Hopefully I will be seeing you guys in the Note 2 forums one day as I will be dying to get my big momma back
seeing that many people complain about this, let me get it straight,:
can you not use an international unlocked phone in the states? why is everyone complaining about weak signal? it should either work on that frequency or not work at all ,right? so why work with low coverage?
either ways this sucks and is totally unacceptable

Its not that it doesn't work. It's that it doesn't receive the 1700mHz band which T-mobile uses for it's 4g service. It will work fine on other gsm providers in US but unfortunately not on T-mobile until they convert to the 1900mHz band. So I pretty much get Edge wherever I'm at. One of our guys Bedwa has been working hard on getting it to work but there is no guarantees.
that should effect the speed not signal bars? I mean EDGE vs 4G is all about speeds
but you mention being with no coverage at all sometimes ? maybe their 4G coverage is better than 2G? is that it?
also I would suggest you change providers and not the phone ,cause you'll miss it

I used to work for AT&T so I refuse to go back to them lol. I know I will miss this beast, and I don't know the ins and outs of signal strength, I just know my wife has great service and laughs at me when I can barely send a text. If I wasn't invested into 3 lines of 2 year contracts with T-mobile however I would be gone in a heartbeat but I don't have the funds to quit right this minute. So I will reluctantly wait for the Note 2 and be back as soon as it releases
well then, good luck to you sir in buying your next phone
Both are good choices. If you like a pure experience go for the Nexus, if you like Sense go for the HTC One X.

Yeah, I did quite a bit of research before I decided what I would "step down" to before I posted. I actually like both devices very much. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages that I can easily work with. So like I said, if anyone knows someone who has either device but wants to get their hand on a note. Im up for the transaction
If I were you I would avoid the One X. The reason I got my note was because of HTC's ineptitude.
I PM'ed you.
OP, maybe the phone is faulty? What is your location? If you have any older Android phones, put your sim card in it, and force the Android phone to stick to EDGE/2G connections only to test the signal. If your older Android phone gets a single just fine, something is wrong with your Note.
I'm in the same predicament as you in terms of being on T-Mobile. Thankfully, I'm always within the area of WIFI. In terms of GPS, I just use the lab feature in googlemaps to precache map areas....and it works!
P.S. Open a thread in the marketplace. And be wary of anyone "PM-ing" you. Take the whole sale to the marketplace before doing anything just to be safe. And pay attention to any offers you get, and the person who is making the offer and their joining date. Good luck.
I just got hold of a Note after getting the One X. I wasn't entirely happy with the One so it will be going on ebay. The One has a great screen, and the f2.0 camera lens made taking low light photos easy. The downsides of the phone however are numerous in my opinion.
Design - the layout makes it hard to wake the phone one handed, as the power button is tiny and the capacitive home button doesn't wake it. The front camera is recessed, which makes it a grime magnet. The rear camera protrudes, making it a scratch magnet
Camera - excellent lens and camera app, average at best sensor (I actually think the Note takes better photos), poor quality HD video
Sound - forget all the Beats audio marketing hype, the One X has the worst sound quality out of any phone I've ever owned. The amount of hiss/crackles coming from the DAC make it sound like a long wave radio. I use my phone a lot for music, so this really put me off the One X.
Battery - in standard form the battery was terrible. The only way I could get a full day from it was to install a custom rom, reduce the auto brightness levels (which are blindingly high by default), turn off all push notifications and disable 2 of the 4 cpu cores. It also took 4 hours to charge!
Performance - very quick, but probably too quick for what the hardware can take. The phone gets incredibly hot when gaming to the point where the screen is almost too hot to touch. If you try and game while it's charging, you'll be greeted with a message telling you the phone is too hot and whatever you're playing will be terminated.
All these things made me try the Note. While it's not as snappy as the X and doesn't have a screen that's as nice as the X, it still performs well, still has a decent screen, better designed, has much better audio and has a phenomenal battery.
I think I'll be sticking with it
I use my note on tmobile I always have service sometimes I notice 1 bar but mostly have 3

Yeah I checked into all that. When I am at my buddies house I get perfect 4g service. I just can't stand the edge stuff. However I did not realize you could pre cache map data. That's awesome!! So thanks for heads up
The problem sounds like T-Mobile. Why not use your phone on Straight Talk, which is basically AT&T. I get excellent service on my Note. I highly recommend any AT&T compatible phone on Straight Talk. My wifes iPhone 4S works great on it as well. $45 a month unlimited everything, 4G speeds, not like T-Mobile's very slow speeds.
thanks to Poisonwolf for the comment on marketplace. I didn't even know about it lol. So anyway I am no longer updating in this thread but here is the link to the marketplace thread if anyone is interested:
FS Galaxy Note GT-N7000
I'll trade you my nexus and a 16gb HP TouchPad.

Prospective Buyer Questions

Hey guys I had a few questions hoping you can help me with.
Right Now i have a Galaxy Nexus with VZ and im sitting on an upgrade, looking to purchase the VZW Note 3 as the successor to my G-Nex.
1) Does anyone know of any deals happening on them currently? So far the best price ive found on upgrade was $249.99 (Amazon) - If there are going to be some Black Friday deals going on where I can get it cheaper (maybe 199.95?) Then Ill wait the extra few weeks, but if people think its pretty set in stone right now, then ill just go ahead and order it
2) Is the VZW Note 3 a Global Phone? Im planning a trip to Europe this summer and curious if my phone will work there.. I probably need to get an international SIM card or something from VZW for it to work right?
3) How is the Signal Quality? My G-Nexus Signal SUCKS, my GFs HTC Phone blows mine out of the water when it comes to signal strength and overall general reception, just curious if the Note 3 has better Radios then previous Samsung Phones.,. I thought the general consensus is the Samsung Phones have the worst reception, Moto Phones have the best, and HTC falls in the middle between the two
4) I consider myself a power user ---> moderate / heavy usage. I know all the reviews say Battery life is great but whats the real world expectation with these? Will i get a full day of use out of it or will I be charging it at 8 aclock at night? I know the battery on my G-Nex was so bad that I always kept half the stuff turned off, brightness to a minimum and even put a plain black background on my phone to conserve energy and still dont get a full day out of it
5) What do you NOT like about the phone? That you may not of known coming into it
Thanks Guys! Oh and BTW have they officially said the N3 will be getting 4.4 or any timeframes for that release??

Well first off wrong section....
But now going into what you asked:
1. I have heard rummors that Best Buy and Radio Shack will be having specials for black friday...not sure of the price but it might be a good idea to research it.
2. Yes the Note3 is a global phone...and can used since it works with a sim card...btw i believe that all Verizon LTE phones are unlocked.
3. The Signal quality i think atleast on my device very good...then again i live in a big city...Miami.
4. The Note3 has a 3200 milli amp battery, which is considerable bigger then the GNex. That said im a heavy user always on the phone doing something i get about 15hrs, so yes the battery should last for you.
5. Most of the annoying things on the phone have been fixed by our Great Developers.
As for the Note3 getting the 4.4 KitKat update that would be a yes but as of now there is no set date....on a side note it would be really funny to see that Verizons Flag Ship Samsung device not getting 4.4. And if that is the case dont worry we usually get those too..
Welcome to the Best Place for Android Dev...!!!!!
I had a Galaxy Nexus and the biggest complaint was battery life. I had 3 batteries I carried daily.
This phone has worlds better battery life but the mod community is growing it is nowhere near the GNex.
Yeah im running 4.4 on my G-Nex right now, I love the features but its buggy and even on older roms like 4.3.1 and all that the battery life is horrendous - If i take it off the charget at 8 AM i have it plugged in at 6 that night or its dead and thats not even using it like crazy
Also the only deals I see (including Radio Shack) are for new line activations, nothing for regular line upgrades
I made the mistake of getting an 16gig iPhone 5S on launch day but just traded a guy on Craigslist for a like new Note 3 with spigen neo case. Verizon even allowed me to add total insurance coverage which shocked me being that its a Craigslist phone.
But the best deal in my opinion was the 30% verizon coupon that was active for a few days after release. Some people got the phone for $100 when they selected in store pickup. I'm sitting there ready to throw the 5S against the wall because I was so upset.

I upgraded from a galaxy Nexus so hopefully I can help you out.
1 radio shack is supposed to have some good black Friday deals plus they will give you money for devices.
2. The note 3 is a global phone. I have an att note 2 and my sim will work with data included just by adjusting the proper apn settings.
3. The note 3 must have the same antennas as the Nexus because it's just as bad as my Nexus. I'm a bus driver so I travel a lot. I have a Motorola bionic which sees 4g often but the note 3 will be in 3g it's very frustrating. And in big cities Verizon is horrible because they have more users being the largest wireless provider and all.
4. This phones battery is amazing. The standby time is even better it won't budge.
5. I just hate the fact that the antennas suck. They really do.

Best thing to do is go ahead and purchase one and play around with it for 14 days. Battery life will vary, every person uses their phone differently. Also signal will vary depending upon your location. Some people say signal/speed is better, some say worse. Black Friday is around the corner and you can probably get the price matched if the price does go down. Now, go ahead and grab one and enjoy all this Note 3 goodness!

Whaaaaat? I upgraded from a Galaxy Nexus too, and it was never able to hold an LTE signal throughout my house. It would intermittently connect to LTE if I was next to a window on one side of my house, but that was it. Other places in my house it would drop to 3G signal that it could barely hold on to.
My new Note 3 holds an LTE signal throughout my house and still has great call quality while I hold the phone inside my clothes dryer (yes that's the worst signal spot in my house and I like to test phones by calling my landline while the phone is in the dryer.)
I think you must have a bad one because the radio in the Note 3 is miles ahead of anything else I've ever used.

As I stated I travel a lot. Do I think it's a better phone than the Nexus absolutely. But it doesn't hold a candle to the bionic's signal and that's a 2 to 3 year old phone. I constantly see the bionic holding a strong signal and the note 3 is on 3g. My Nexus was the same way.

But yeah it is true that moto is known for great radios so I can't really argue.

I don't know why people are complaining about antennas. Coming from the Gnex, the antennas on this baby are above and beyond. Bsmith you likely have a defective radio in your N3, or simply a subpar radio. Logically it would have to be that because everyone that owns a N3 isn't complaining about reception (myself included).
To the OP - getting this phone is a no brainer, coming from ANY phone. I've never in my life experienced battery life/screen on time like this (I've gotten 8+ hours screen on time on a single charge). It also flies in every way, and you just can't go wrong with 3GB of RAM and the multitude of multitasking options at your fingertips. Multitasking is very important to me, and there's no other phone that can do it like this. For years I've felt the devices and software I've had just didn't get it quite right. Finally they have. Multi-window and pen window are ingenious, and they work without a single hiccup or stutter. This thing is a monster.
And if I went into every useful setting and tweak on the STOCK rom (out of the box), I could go on for hours. Add to all that the s-pen with all its features (I'm an artist so I'm in love with it), and the N3 is the champion among champions.
I will literally never get another brand/model. When the N4 comes out, I'll be the first in line. I've never been this impressed with a mobile device.

Verizon Note 3 Signal - Is it that bad? POLL

So i have the chance to pick up a N3 today, but I have heard there are issues with signal on the device. How bad is it? I talked to my buddy with one the other day and he was cutting in and out. Is this a major issue with them overall? Thanks
My signal is superb. Best phone signal ive ever had are this Note 3 and the S4 before it
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I see it this way...many ppl report issues with WiFi in particular but it's an issue with router and/or the channel that's being used. Matching the channel via the app Wifi Analyzer can assist with quickly fixing said issue
However, I voted yes to your poll because 4G signal works, but not consistently when on the train where AT&T would be a better network(at least with my Note 2) over the course of a 30 mile commute. This is in the Philadelphia area where I live, might be regional
Bottom line, I'm switching from Verizon to AT&T asap because it's cheaper, more reliable across town, and faster speedtest.net results in Phila area
Experience that applies
I'm in Ohio too (Go Bucks!) and I purchased 2 Galaxy Note 3s at the same time. Mine is phenomenal! The best cell reception of any phone I've ever seen. I truly can't go on enough about how this phone is the best I've seen out of about 15 phones.
My wife's phone is the opposite. She has had issues from day one. I just took her phone back to the Samsung reps at Best Buy Monday and they 'reflashed' the factory ROM from a laptop while I waited. The Rep, who spent most of the time I was there asking me questions about the N3, didn't seem like he knew that much about the phone. He said he's seen a handful of N3's come back and reflashing the factory rom seems to fix it. He did say that they were all the Verizon version. I don't trust too much of what he said, as I said, he clearly knew less about the phone and phones in general than I did.
Now having said all that. His flash did not fix the problem. We've been in multiple places where my wife's phone cannot make or receive calls while mine standing next to her has no issues. I truly believed it to be a software issue because it will show the same signal strength as mine. Or darn near the same. The last time I checked, mine was -93dBm while hers was -95dBm. Mine would call out, hers would not.
The Samsung Rep told me to bring it back in and they're going to swap it out as a defective product. Maybe it's because hers is the white model and mine is the black? Just kidding of course... but I am going to ask for her to get the rose gold model instead of the white, just because she's girlie and will like it.
Having said all this... I would not hesitate to recommend this phone to anyone and everyone. I do so on a regular basis. I believe this to be an unusual situation, not the norm. I think you should get it and if you notice any troubles, take it back and make them work it out. The phone is THAT good that it's worth the risk of possible hassle to get it right.

Thanks for the detailed response. My only issue here is Im trading my LG G2 for the N3 (craigslist), so it wont be just as easy as walking into the store and swapping it out. Which is what has me worried. G2 is an awesome phone, just ready to have a new toy until the S5 drops.

I would encourage you to do the trade right in the Verizon store, even if Big Red won't get a dime. Here's why:
- both parties can get the IMEIs checked by Verizon to make sure that they are clean
- both parties can transfer the other phone immediately to their own account.
There have been a couple incidents reported here where folks bought phones off of craigslist, and - failing to register the phone to their account - later found their phones reported stolen. (Meaning, they suddenly had a worthless deactivated phone) That can only happen out of your control if you don't have it registered to your account.
Not only that, but if your counterparty refuses to meet you in a Verizon store, you will know that something is not square.
Good luck
Coming fomr a Verizon Galaxy Nexus in a good 4G coverage area, band 4, I have zero issues. In fact my speeds over 4G increased significantly compared to my Galaxy Nexus, and WiFi is as fast as ever.
Like any phone Your Mileage Will Vary, but I'd recommend this phone to anyone, even if I didn't like them, it's that good.
Signal is nearly always strong and phone is always fast!

I came to the N3 from that phone too. I LOVED that phone for the ease of rooting/flashing... but you're right. Both battery and reception was terrible.
My phone, data and WIFI are all good with this phone. I had a Droid Maxx before this and the WIFI was terrible on that. Other than the locked bootloader this phone is the best on my opinion. I had a Nokia 822, Nokia 928, Razr M, S3 and a Razr Maxx all within the last year and the N3 kills them all. I don't want to turn this into a comparison thread but that's my experience and opinion.
Worst phone reception I have ever had on a phone. I barely get signal anywhere. Have a few dropped calls everyday. Never expected this from Samsung. I got the phone on release day and at first I thought it was me, but even after the updates, I absolutely hate the reception. I'm usually always around the -110 to -120 mark.

Have you tried getting it replaced? I'm guessing you're probably beyond the warranty period, but if you have insurance you can probably get it swapped out. Sounds like that is not the norm...

Ive joined the cutting edge.........

I got my Note Edge today and like it better than my Note 4 ( wife now has it ). I got the phone from Best Buy but they didnt have any accessories. So Iwent to at&t and they had cases but no phones. So I bought a INCIPIO silver case. I had to return it because the corner ccracked but they had another to swap out with me. FIgured might as well try everyone else to. So I went to Verizon and they had nothing. Next I went to T-Mobile and they also had nothing. I then went to Sprint and the had no phone but the flip cases and two full screen protectors. I bought one and the sales associate tried to install it but it wouldn't stick so they grabbed the other one and that went on without issue. I figured I'd have them install it so if it got messed up or fingerprints then it would be on them to replace it.
So after a day of ripping and running, i got my edge and got it all protected.
Cool story bro
Not a very jumping thread because there are so few of us. Nothing else is going on in here so you should read it again..........
There are some of us though and the phone seems to be delivering on it's expectations for most users. Samsung did a pretty good job it seems. My previous Notes all had TW glitches, FC's, restarts and lag. My Note 3 in particular, had the habit of doing a double reboot almost every time from day one and as fast as it was....it lagged and froze with consistency whether stock or rooted. I haven't had any issues at all with the Edge so far. Smooth and very fast with no unintended edge touches. Not even sure I really need to ever have root honestly. Sure I wish I could get rid of the bloatware and it's early in the game with it, but I am satisfied with the device
Sent via the Samsung Galaxy Note® Edge, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone
I agree tbran, even my note 4 would freeze when i was typing or scrolling fast. I have no issues with this device. Im just hoping it gets support. I am with Sprint and i need root for a couple things like to fix write to sd card and i like free wifi tether, other then that i can live with the way it is........for now...lol
Why Sprint? Their service is terrible and so is their customer service
Ive been with Spint for over 12 years and can say that what most people have to say about Sprint is true but it is getting better. I have 4 lines and unlimited data for all 4. Sprint service is getting better every year and lately 4G service seems to be expanding in regions that i actually am at to use it. While others are caped at a data level i can surf, stream, download, tether, ect ect ect and not worry about getting hit with some crazy bill at the end of the cycle. I use to say that Sprint offers unlimited data but no data service its really not the case anymore. In order for me to have the same services with any other Network it would cost me almost 50 more a month thats if they offered me unlimited. They usually say 20gb and that might be enough but what if it isnt.....
Didn't realize so many had issues with earlier Notes. I had the Note 1 and the Note 2, and they were mostly trouble free. Then again I avoided using TW. I am hurting without root.
So far everything is running smoothly on my Edge, but not without issue. Half my Tasker profiles require root, and not being about to delete bloat ware is frustrating.

I use tmobile, still have the truly unlimited 20 a month plan with no throttling. And if you know how to do it, you can tether with no throttling either.
Tmo's lte is fast, so is it's backup hspa+ and their network rollout is staggeringly quick. If you drop off of the sparse lte Sprint has, you drop back down to their legacy 3g cdma network that can barely hit 1 mbps on a good day. Not to mention all the boost, & virgin phones sucking up their narrow bandwidth.
All I'm saying is Sprint charges accordingly for their slow network. That's why it's the cheapest. The name "Sprint" is laughable, considering the speeds they can hardly provide.
I have a question for you edge owners. Can you change the apps and pick where you want them on the side screen? Like say I want my messages at the bottom and something else above it like Facebook or something?

Central park, didn't look for accessories yet. Waiting to see if I keep it. I'm holding both the note 4 and edge in front of me trying to decide. Good problem to have. Problem is...I want both but one has to go back.
I know that problem, my wife ended up with the Note 4. I gave her my note 3 when I got the 4 and when I got the edge she got the 4. I trade her 3 and a s4 in on the Edge so I only came out of pocket $147.00, i used another lines upgrade for it
