[Q] Just got a gently used Nexus 4 but now confused - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Am new to this forum. I was using the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 and was pretty happy with the phone - the UI, battery life (2600 mAh), size etc. However I came across this guy who was selling a 2 month old Nexus 4 for a reasonable price and so picked it up - thought of giving my wife the Samsung.
Now, a couple of things I noticed abt Nexus 4 is that the screen and colors look pretty washed out compared to the Samsung, the stock Kitkat 4.4 UI and controls look very very bland compared to Samsung's TouchWiz. Am not confused whether to keep the Nexus or to sell it off.
I dont want to make a mistake in haste. What do you suggest?
Thanks.

What did you do before this happened?

The Samsung phones use OLED screens while the Nexus 4 has an IPS screen. The washed out colours is a common complaint and many Nexus 4 owners don't know why the LG-branded version has such good colours.
To help alleviate the problem, it would be best to install a custom kernel or ROM that gives you colour control.
I installed the Experience ROM with the iPhone5 colour profile and it looks much better.

[Q] Samsung galaxy note 10.1 is it really better than Nexus 10

Hello,
I know what your thinking we have exhausted this conversation so why go over old grounds. However its been almost a week since the nexus 10 has been released so i want to know if opinions have changed.
I have read a lot about the Nexus 10 including things about how good the screen quality is but at the same time people have also complained about the battery issue, light leakage, no micro sd card etc. So my question is........is the nexus 10 still better than the Samsung Galaxy note 10.1 especially with these issues.
I have played around with the Note and I can't see any issues with quality of screen and I think the user interface looks much better, more exciting, more user friendly than the nexus 10 . Which in my view looks a little dull based on the videos i have seen (its lacking character) Do nexus users agree?
Is there a lot of difference in the quality of screen when the screen is only a 10.1 and would having more pixel only matter if the screen was bigger.
I am still undecided between the two and currently my mind is saying Nexus but my heart is saying Samsung note. If I go with my heart, part of me is saying I may regret it.
Can someone who now actually owns a Nexus 10 please help with my dilemma.
On paper the Nexus 10 should be a gazillion times better so I would try and get a perfect nexus 10 or wait until Samsung uses that display and A15 on their own tablet, which can't be that far off.
Samsung might use their AMOLED panel instead though so it might be quite different from the Nexus 10's screen.
Im having both at the moment (will return the Note soon tho). The built quality of the nexus is faaaarrrrrr superior than the Note (yes, it's that far). The Nexus feels really really good in hands, very sturdy like you know it's an expensive device once you see it in person. The Note, on the other hand, looks very cheap thanks to its plastic body (I almost feel ashamed holding it in my class haha). However, the Note doesn't have light bleed while my Nexus does (well, I requested a replacement already). and if you don't know, the Note have 7000 mAh battery while the Nexus is 9000 mAh. SO if you are Ok with the Note's battery, you will be pleased with the nexus's (from my personal experience, the Note's battery is very average).
Also, Sorry to say, Touchwiz sucks. Im not sure while you prefer it to pure android. It laaaagggss. The Note is a powerful device but its software needs more work.
For summary, no the Note is not any bettery. actually it's worse in every aspects except the Spen and expandable storage.
Here's a quick test you can do. Go to your nearest electronics retailer and look at iPads with Retina, then go look at the Note 10.1 (and an iPad 2 if you can find one).
While you're at it, play with an HTC One X or LG Optimus G, then go look at a HTC Sensation or Galaxy S2 or just about any other 2011 phone.
Obviously, I'm asking you to contrast the resolution differences between those units above. I think just a few minutes doing that should convince you why the Note 10.1 falls short of the N10 in quite a few areas. What has been seen can't be unseen, really, and the leap from 1280x800 to 2560x1600 is huge.
While you're out there comparing, also look at the Android version number on the Note 10.1...and realize that you'll be looking at that same version number for quite some time. Samsung does not support tablet updates at anywhere near the speed they do for the phone lineup. My Tab 8.9 was a great tablet this time last year, but it's still running last year's OS too. It won't see official 4.1/4.2, let alone the next version. That's typical Samsung tablet updates.
The only reason I'd recommend the Note over the N10 is if you really need the S-Pen, and can't live without removable storage.
Two months ago, I would have recommended the Note over any other Android tablet, so it's not that I dislike it. It's just that Samsung is making something much better now, AND it's being directly supported by Google.

[Q] Nexus 4 or galaxy s3 today...plz help guys

I m planning to buy galaxy s3 i 9305 or i9300 or nexus 4 but i am really confused.please help me. i have heard that almost everyone that owns a nexus has a yellow tint or yellow patch problems.are there any who got rid of it and moreover nexus has a battery life disaster and supports otg only with power.on the other hand s3 has less configuration, less custom roms and mods but is better with battery and screen issues.
Now the price is almost same for both the devices.
keeping the current issues and solutions in mind, please reply as i have to purchase one soon.

Battery life disaster? I'm getting excellent battery life. Of course I use a custom kernel. As for the yellow tint, you can use a custom kernel with a application which you can tweak the colors to your desire. Over here in the Nexus 4 forum, we have lots of developers working and updating their work for the community. There are always improvements. You can enjoy freedom or get clogged with a bloatware. The Nexus 4 is the way to go. You're going to love it.
I just want to add something. You have to keep in mind that battery life depends on your usage, if you play games on your phone very often you will have a short battery life. I'm not saying you shouldn't play. It's pretty much all common sense.

my nexus 4 didnt have a yellow tint .... it has WARM colors yes so whites for example are closer to yellow instead of that blue COLD color, but i havnt heard of a tint , i ordered mine in february if it makes a difference.
EDIT like above post said , with a custom kernel you can tweak the colors , so its not even bad
I've had no issues with yellow tint or screen.
Faster than s3 ,better graphics (andro 320) better screen (IPS display)
But has only 2 models 8 & 16gb no options for micro SD card.
To me the nexus 4 feels high quality like an iPhone does in your hand.
Battery life is not that bad see attached img
Also keep in mind s3 probably won't receive any more updates (if that's a concern to you)
Feel free to pm me if you have special questions or whatever.

but what about otg with power and non-removable battery

it does not supports otg witout power i.e u cannot connect usbs on the go.more over batter is non-removable ,it will not last longer say 2 or 3 years as if i spend 400$,its 2 much for me,i cant afford another phone in 2 years.
And regarding yellow patches, are there any still suffering from that or its cured for all?.coz i m only worried about that thing.i don't want to rma again and agan mates.

Just dumped a GS3 for N4 today in fact. My rule has always been don't buy any Android devices except Nexus devices. I broke that advice with the GS3 and regretted it for 3 months. Loving the N4 so far, You can't go wrong with a Nexus, and with 5.0 on the horizon in May, it's one more reason to avoid the GS3.
Why post this in general and q&a?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
You can remove the battery. It's just more difficult than say a gs3 ..
Also don't belive anyone is still suffering from yellow patches .. At least with the newer rev:11 model. Or update to 4.2.2
Also why do you think it will only last 2-3 years ?

I'm on the same boat of having to stick to one phone for a couple years too, the nexus 4 is great, by 2-3 years you're gonna wanna upgrade trust me, even if your budget doesn't allow it, also the battery is removable you just need to open it up, it's extremely easy to remove the battery once you have it open. the nexus 4 reminds me of back in 2010-2011 when one of the smoothest phone on gingerbread was the mytouch 4G oh man I loved that phone and then I upgraded to the nexus 4 no regrets at all, I kinda miss HTC sense (I had it rooted so it had sense 3.5) but idk I adjusted to vanilla android it's a lot cleaner, oh and like someone previously stated the gs3 is cluttered with bloatware and I was never a fan of touchwiz
Its personal preference, you will have to use both phones to be 100% sure which one you like. For me I vote for nexus 4, battery and screen color issues was fixed with custom kernels (have been using franco). And also I prefer IPS screen over gs3 screen. GS3 has removal battery, memory card, otg and has touchwizz, if these are important to you than you could consider the gs3. However, I'll personally go with a note 2 over gs3. There are issues with every phone, iphone 5, gs3, and nexus 4; no phones perfect. Good Luck.
OP there is no need to have 3 thread on the same subject/topic please keep it to one thread, Thank You.

[Q] Hard to decide between Note 3 and Nexus 5

Hi guys,
I am having some serious thoughts on what to get... Basically I am a software developer and I have a Galaxy Nexus, a Galaxy S1 some ond Xperia and a Nexus 7. It is time for me to switch to a new device as my daily driver. The options I have are Galaxy Nexus 5 and the Note 3. The Note 3 is more expensive with around 150$ in my country, considering the type of contract I am getting. The phone will be used for at least one year.
Nexus 5: well, no review yet. Price is reasonable in my country and has the new 4.4. The new android version doesn't impress me. To be honest I find the google experience pretty boring but I have to admit I liked receiving fast updates on my Nexus.
Note 3: I have been reading around the forum for the last days. I saw that many have problems with the home button, the battery life, the screen issues. I like the s-pen features but I am not sure how much I'll use them.
What advice do you give me ? What should I get ?

i have galaxy note 3 but if i time returns i will choose nexus 5
Please mention your reasons. It would help me a lot. Thanks
I'm using note 3 at the moment and my nexus 5 is on its way to me, will give more accurate impression once received.
Features I prefer nexus 5 over note 3
Design look and feel (massive improvement)
No TW bloatware (another massive factor)
Easier to carry around
More regular software updates kat 4.4
No lag freezing (hopefully)
Features I will miss coming from note 3
camera not impressed at all (will miss that the most)
4k video recording
Battery life
S-pen (just a little)
Multi screens (what a feature)
Large screen
Ext memory
Have you encountered any problems with the Note 3 ? Does it lag ? Do you have that effect on low brightness for dark borders ? How does TW bloatware affect you ?
Battery wise note has 50%more juice. Home button issues - do you mean the button moving around? It is not a problem, people are too much complaining about tiny tiny things they should never find unless they read about it.
Camera - i think nexus5 is way better than n3. Its not the pixels that matter, or software options. Nexus 5 camera is next level, focus is about 10 times faster.
Bloatware yes, samsung puts 700mb of bloatware that you dont receive on nexus. Not sure if anything of that is usable. But cyanogenmod should arrive soon!
I wish note3 had the new camera and with optical stabilization, then it would be perfect!
As for 4.4 - its just a number. There will definitely arrive new android versions fast on the n3, just that you have to flash it yourself and void the warranty.

I like Nexus because:
- The design of the device and the appearance of the UI is more appealing to me. I like to keep things on my phone looking pretty "minimalistic" with few colors and lots and lots of black. I absolutely hate the Touchwiz cartoony look and I always change everything about it, the process starts immediately on first boot of the phone. Everything about Touchwiz looks awful - the icons, the menus, the choices in colors, those horrible big green quick settings toggles in the notification bar. Stock Android is much much better when it comes to looks. The Nexus 5 and its software looks like it's been designed by a design team made up of adults who actually make cohesive decisions together. Touchwiz looks to me like the school project of a pre-school class where everyone can add their favorite color and everyone gets to participate and add their touch to the design. Little Johnny wants a big blue, round icon there - OK let's put it right next to Jenny's rectangular pink icon there and add Lisa's green toggles! Fun for everybody.
I like Note 2/3 because:
- The battery is bigger. I've never been this satisfied with battery life.
- The screen is bigger. Honestly after using the Note 2, I cringe every time I use my iPhone 4 (I keep it as my spare phone) or my wife's Galaxy S III. The displays are so tiny, I don't think I could go back. Not even to a 5" display.
- I don't like the on screen nav buttons of stock Android. I want the physical menu, home and back buttons.
- The S-Pen. I'm not a heavy S-Pen user but it has really nice features on the Note 3. I use it much more with my Note 3 than I did with my Note 2.
- Memory card slot. Seriously. I could not live without one.
- Removable battery - not a big reason but nonetheless it is nice.
I hate the Note 2/3 because:
- I get to a point where I'm never satisfied with the ROM I use. New stuff is released on XDA and I feel this pressing need to try other ROMs. All the time. Sometimes it seems all I do with my phone is restoring backups. With the Nexus I think that I would be more easily able to just stick with one ROM.. Maybe even the stock ROM, just rooting it.
Don't listen to them
I just bought Note 3 after using Note 2 for couple of months
And go for Note 3 believe me this is the beast .. Note 3 Snap dragon
I am in the same boat as op.
I have a s2 now for 3 years and looking for an upgrade.
Minimum 5 inch screen, preferably a tad bigger.
Key feature should be office workability, due to a upcoming promotion as a project manager.
So I need info from all sorts of documents on the fly. Including excel.
Does the note provide this?
For free time I love playing games and viewing movies.
Help appreciated.

U may have to wait for few weeks to get the full hands on review about this. Nexus 5. The specs r good. But we don't know about battery life, camera performance, and heating issues. Note 3 is good in these areas.

I am planning on using the Note 3 with stock firmware from Samsung... because of warranty issues of knox trigger. This would also help on trying to reproduce bugs that appear on TouchWiz platform easier. So, having stock on Note3 sucks performance wise ?

Note 3 is far better then note 2 for sure but is it the best ow no. It's a beast but not the best.
If i didn't have the Note 3 already i would be pretty tempted to buy the Nexus 5. It's half the price, here, with great hardware, Kit Kat, Google updates, etc. But those touch buttons (why?) on the screen are a no no for me.
Thank you all for replies. After doing a lot of reading on the Buyers remorse thread I see that most of note3 users are happy. The only notable problems are: very weak audio output because of the small speaker, the pink effect around black edges on low brightness settings and the wobbly home button. Also I see that the battery isn't so great.
I am really thinking what to get, as I said, the difference would be around 150$ in price.
If I didn't have N3 already I would have the N5. I had N4 previously.
N3 has plus and minus points.
+ points
Battery Life - best I ever had
SD Card - installed 64GB,some users have install 128GB.
Big Screen - I like the screen some don't like AMOLED colors.
Fastest CPU & 3GB RAM
Multi Window & Pen Window
IrDA port - can control devices from my phone.
- points
Design - not very stylish
Build quality - my back cover already creaks only 1 month old. Others have experienced Home button and screen/multi touch issues
External Speakers - embarrassing from Samsung.
Samsung bloatware - unnecessary
Wireless Charging - not built in but @ extra cost

Costum ROM
why wouldn't you just wait on xda to get pure 4.4 android and install that ROM on your note 3 ?
Hi,
the Google Nexus 5 is indeed a very good phone. Having switched from Nexus 4 to Galaxy Note 3 I can basically give you good explanations.
The Galaxy Note 3 has plenty more features than the Google Nexus 4 abd 5 which is great.
I would say the Note 3 wins everywhere against the Nexus unless you tell me you prefer smaller screen. In my case, the screen size was the reasob why I moved.
On the otherside, yes there are a lot of Samsung apps and that sucks to me. The Galaxy Note 3 can be rooted easily, so you can easy remove those bloatwares which make me feel more confortable that way.
On the other hand, I do prefer the PURE Androis that the Google Nexus has to the TouchWiz by Samsung because it uses way less resources.
The perfect phone for me would be a Note 3 with a AOSP Rom. (CyanogenMod or Android Open Kang Project (AOKP) because it would give the pure android feeling which means higher battery life, no bloatwares, faster updates.
Ok guys, some N5 reviews have appeared and to be honest, things don't look that good in battery and camera departments. Actually that was kinda expected considering the 2300 mAh battery and 1080p screen.
Now back to note 3, all the small things that bothered me (wobbly home button, pinkish black borders, bloatware) are not important anymore. The things that worries me most is the screen burn in. I saw some reviews where this is mentioned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3mbkoXCMhs&feature=em-uploademail from 19 minute). I have own so far a Galaxy S1 and a Galaxy Nexus both having amoled screens. On my GNex sometimes I can see the keyboard shadow after using it, but I haven't really noticed any permanent retention as it goes off after a few seconds. I just did a quick check with blue color all over the screen and I can see a very faint shadow of the top bar, but nothing really noticeable. BUT, I use the phone on auto brightness and considering that Note 3 has the most bright amoled display built, I am afraid that it will suffer from permanent burn in because of blue pixels. Could anyone tell me if they have burn in ? This is a major drawback for me and might be the point which may convince me to give up on note3 in favor of N5.
Thanks all for your help. I really appreciate it.
For me it's so simple. They don't even belong to the same category.
Do you need/like the S-Pen features (and do you actually use them)? Do you need the bigger screen and the amazing Full HD @60fps video (let alone the 4K)?
If not then the Nexus 5 is a no brainer at this price point. Plain and simple.
Apps and bloatware are of no importance to me. I always remove them to my preference, to me flashing ROMs is an integral part of a smartphone like Note 3.
I agree with you, but if the screen has issues than all the other features are pointless, considering that the screen is the thing we see most.
It would be really great if owners could do some screen tests and return with the result.

It depends what you want in a phone.
I switched from the HTC One to the Note3 for one reason only. Screen size.
HTC One is 4.7inches
Note 3 is 5.7
Note has fancy eye tracking software, air gestures, S Pen etc.. The HTC doesn't.
No one can make the choice for you. Go get some hands on time with each and decide which you want.
Dollar for dollar, IMO, there's probably no better value for the money than the LG Optimus G Pro. You can get them unlocked for around $300 and they have:
5.5 inch 1080P IPS display
32GB
Micro SD expansion slot
3140 mAh battery (removable)
Metal frame (not plastic)
Built-in Wireless charging out of the box
13 MP camera that has a manual focus control (which I think is a brilliant feature) In most situations, the camera produces less over-processed images than the Note 3
I had one and sold it before moving to the Note 3, and I still think it was a bad move on my part, overall.

The HTC One is definitely nice.
I love the solid metal frame and the forward facing speakers.
But no expandable SD slot and the sealed battery is a deal killer for me.
Plus, the screen size of the note is just amazing!

I have htc one and thinking of buying a Note 3 as I primarily do more reading on phone, the screen is too small for me. If you buying a htc one, make sure you are easily accessible to a repair service, like not buying from oversea. In case you have purple tint camera problem. I had it on mine and got replaced.

I would also still choose the Note 3 if I had to choose again,
since the note 3 is much more powerful.
And also what's already said here before, I really like the idea of changing or pulling out the battery.
So far I'm still very happy with my Note 3, despite the KNOX thing.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Note definitely. The screen is just amazing.
+1
Definitely the note 3.
Best amazing beautiful 5.7 screen.
Best qualcomm SOC quad core.
Max 3gb RAM
Best S-PEN.
Etc.
Btw, knox is really a waste... But you can live with it

I own both and love them for different reasons. The build quality/design of the note and it's horrible software are it's biggest drawbacks. The One performs better in almost every way with general use i.e. the apps load in the blink of an eye, including the camera.
The Note has way too much of delay when doing simple things like loading the phone or messages apps, and the software design is ugly, sluggish and very dated i.e. no gestures or consideration for size of the phone in terms of menu options appearing at the very top of the screen. Also a lack of real estate due to the default dpi used by Samsung.
The camera quality is debateable. Outdoors in good lighting conditions, the Note wins hands down. But honestly, how often are we outdoors in optimal lighting? The One takes images in the blink of an eye, has OIS and great FOV which captures more in the frame. It is a much better all rounder with the best low light shots of any phone I've had.
The one only really falls short in two areas for me.
1) The battery is good but the Note absolutely kills it! Charge time is also a lot slower than the Note even though it's much smaller.
2) The screen is amazing on the Note. The One is fantastic as well but the Notes size is hard to let go of once you're used to it. It's such a great middle size that eliminated the need for a phone AND a tablet, in most cases. I also love the the contrast, saturation and deep blacks, it's very appealing to look at.
Overall, I think that the One is the better phone due to its superior software, build quality which rivals Apple, excellent everyday-use camera, stereo speakers and snappy UI and performance. But the Note isn't far behind. I would be able forgive it's build quality and rank it as the better overall phone if it weren't for Samsung's dated Touchwiz UI and crappy software. They really need to work on this in their next major release as it has put me off buying Samsung ever again.
At the end of the day, they're both great choices and I find myself switching between the two as I miss different things about each one. I'm definitely excited to see what the new flagships will be like in the coming months.

Move from nexus 5 to Note 3

Ok, a little background. Been moving phones like crazy in the last 4 years. Djeez XDA and big boy toys, you're all to blame
I now have a Nexus 5 32GB next to my Note 1 which I just have to flash roms (yes, I am that crazy)
To be honest I love the form factor of the Note and I am very disappointed in the Nexus 5. How can you make a phone that has a bad speaker to start with, a seriously bad video stabilization in my eyes, rattling buttons, hardware gps connection issues, yellowish display ....
Are there any people here that switched from a Nexus 5 to a Note 3 and do you want to share your opinion about it?
Or are there people that dislike the Note 3 after a while?
Go for it....u will love it...go for n9005.
Wish u good luck.

Hi mate I did the exact same swap from nexus 5 to note 3. Love nexus devices but was massively disappointed in the 5. Everyone goes on about vanilla android but I love touchwiz.
Software and hardware wise the note 3 is a clear winner in my eyes. Battery is alot better than the nexus which is expected due to the size I guess
I love the big screen both for size and quality. Also the advantage of having the memory card option for storage.
I think it is a good move, I am bit of an android/samsung fan boy but I reckon the facts speak for themselves regardless of opinion.

I made the switch from a nexus 5. After years with Android I was really hankering after a pure Android experience. I loved the Nexus 5 when I first got it but I have to admit I found vanilla android a bit boring after a while. Build quality was an issue too for me. Love the note 3. Battery life. Performance. Screen size. S pen, which I do use a lot. Touchwhiz is lookin old though, would really like it if we got the new look on the s5. Knowing Samsung like I do I'll be surprised if we do. Anytime this year anyway. And you see that takes us back to the Nexus 5. Updates! You choose which is more important to you.

I tried LG G2 and after few days I returned it because of bad quality of body, speaker and mic. Note is much more better.

Seems like exactly the same reasons why I would move to the Note 3.
Now that I modified my car radio so I can finally play music over Bluetooth so the 32GB - OS - APPS doesn't cut it anymore. Especially when travelling in remote countries.
I've never had an issue with my S1 S2 S3 or note 1 except for the GPS in the S1 which was a hardware contact design issue.
All my HTC devices have gone in for warranty with a lot of (insert not so nice word here). So no more HTC.
I thought going to the Nexus 5 was going to give me the joys of a vanilla latest rom but I am disappointed in the lack of stuff that google build into it and especially the top specs hardware which just don't seem to be top in the real world.
So probably will have to sell the N5 to fund the Note 3. .... now what will I tell my wife ... again. :silly:
I've had an S2, S3, S4, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, also iphone 4s and 5. I'm now on the note 3 and I can safely say I think it is the best of the bunch by far.
I know it is easy to say because I have the device but you can also see that I have experienced a number of recent devices. I had to buy my Mrs A note 3 when I got mine

That's what makes it dangerous I think
For the price you really can't beat the nexus 5. In almost all other aspects the Note 3 (I can only speak for the N9005 which I own) is the better phone.
I briefly switched over to the nexus 5 and did enjoy aspects of the vanilla software as well as the development scene. However after a few days I began to miss certain features of the Note 3 software and really missed the screen, pen and battery life. Speaker is much better too.

Agree nexus 5's are good for the price, Nexus phones generally nearly always are. However I wasn't happy with the speaker, screen, camera or build quality which has really put me off the nexus brand.
