[Q] Is it worth it to sell your 16gb Moto X for a 32gb Dev Edition? - Moto X General

I have been regretting having only 16gb of storage on my moto X since all my other android items have 32gb and I somehow manage to burn through the 16gb all the time. I have also not had any luck getting root back since upgrading to 4.4 and am pretty bummed that no one has figured out how to unlock the bootloader. Has anyone ditched their basic 16gb moto x for a 32gb Dev edition? I am thinking it might be worth the extra hundred dollars or so since moto is having a sale on them. Vote and help decide the fate of my phone!:good:

I just did exactly what you are pondering and I'm happy with my decision. Took advantage of the recent $100 off deal to get my DE for $350, and I'll be selling my 16GB once I switch it over.

32gb not enough for me. Need 64gb or better yet 128gb. I'd settle for 32gb internal with micro SD card slot.

Damn. Need one for the wife. To replace her once beloved iPhone. Til she played with my x.

Another line on our Verizon account was eligible for an upgrade, I have unlimited still. Upgraded the other line at a big box store to a 16GB for $1, swapped devices, purchased dev edition, activated, sold 16GB, sold the old Droid X and the net was $107 for a DE, other family member got an upgrade from Droid X to Gnex, and a 2 year renewed contract for them and I got to keep unlimited.
I'd sell it for the DE any day; double the memory, unlockable with warranty, easy everything. Super happy with my Verizon DE. Then again, I only had a standard black/woven black 16GB for less than 24 hours.

For 50 bucks more I'd get a DE without question. But I'm in Canada, so I got the regular X...but I'm extremely happy. And I'd never need 32gb....but that's me.
I'd still have gotten the DE tho....if I could have.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...

I think the dev edition is worth it. Especially if you need 32gb. The unlocked bootloader is also great since you never have to worry about root getting locked down.

People keep talking like rooting and stuff is easier and/or better on the DE. LOL. Its no different in that way whatsoever than any other x that you can unlock the boot loader.
Exactly the same everything. Only difference is warranty stays in tact....otherwise no different than any other unlockable X.

And why anyone would buy them is beyond me. Buy a used or new one from another carrier...and use it on those networks if you really want to be with them.
Never would I buy a phone I can't unlock. No way.

But us.....the 0.5 percent ....why would any of us buy an unlockable phone. May as well get an iPhone then. LOL
K....I take back the iPhone joke. The Moto x is better than iPhone out of the box.

Rooting is easier on DE and/or gsm version with unlockable bootloader. I was so frustrated at the root methods not working and the extra hoop jumping and troubleshooting I said screw the warranty. I need my root. Android is worthless to me without it.

Probably stop buying from those useless morons who also put their ugly crappy logo on the phones. Unlocked GSM version baby.

32+ gigs and unlockable bootloader. Developer edition or not, those are things I would never compromise on any phone. Even if the phone came rooted out of the box, having an unlocked bootloader gives you the freedom to modify things you otherwise could not or should not. It's almost like asking freedom vs imprisonment., actually it's exactly like that.

Yes, useless morons with the best coverage, and logo's I couldn't care less about.

After moving from Verizon to T-Mobile I can honestly say their coverage is overrated, but I think his point was to buy Dev editions from Motorola and you wouldn't have these issues. I would have gotten a Verizon Dev edition until Verizon explained that even If I buy a phone cash I still have to pay their overpriced monthly charges including subsidies for phones I bought years ago. Screw that. T-Mobile all day every day the savings is worth it.

'
What if he gets NO service anywhere around him other than with Verizon, "nah bro, just get the T-Mo one anyway" sh*t ton of good a phone with no service is.

Again...if I had to use Verizon say.....I'd get DE edition...or buy another compatible carriers phone and sim unlock it. I'd never own a phone I couldn't unlock. But that's just me.

The Moto G seems to be a good candidate, since it's very cheap (179$ the unbranded 8gb version, not sure if the 70$ verizon prepaid version is suitable for this) and should be enough for exploiting. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy one by myself, but with a bunch of pledges we can probably collect enough money for buying one for GeoHot. Probably this is the only concrete way to have a working root exploit with a locked bootloader.
I can start with a 20$ pledge. Anyone else?
Pledged:
20$ - Azarielz
20$ - BlueFlame4
10$ - super65man
5$ - giulio_splash
55$ pledged of ~179$ goal
Sounds like a good idea. We better go for the unbranded version for 179$.
So I would add 20$. How can we donate to GeoHot?

this only factor its keeping me from over hype myself to this phone, if someone roots and unlocks bootloader this beast. will be the android phone of the year on size specs and battery.
That's where I am. N6 is too big. I have a Moto X and Nexus 7 (both 2013), and the N6 is just too big, based on the PhoneArena size comparisons. I need root, so the N6 has a slight advantage right now.
I love the idea of a Nexus phone, but the Turbo has most of the features I would want, like Moto Apps (same/similar to Moto X), wireless charging, amazing battery, and it's not so big. I know the N6 will be easy to root/unlock, but I don't if that is enough to outweigh the size.
Price is still an unknown on the Turbo, too. I have to think it's less than the $649 of the N6.
Semi-related.. Another thing I was thinking about the other day.. the Turbo has capacative buttons, with no menu button. My Moto X has on-screen buttons and does show the three dots from time to time that works as a menu button on the right side of the nav bar. How would the Turbo handle such a situation? Would the developer be forced to make a menu button somewhere in their app?
Don't forget about the note 4

I'm confident we'll get root. Almost every phone out there has gotten root, most without much delay.
Time will tell though
This might be the first phone I might not care about root. I don't use hotspots. Its 90% pure Android with actually useful extra features. With 3 gigs of ram and that battery, do I really care about bloat apps? I think maybe unicon and xposed might be my only reasons. And there not just haves. Of course I want root. Its my phone. But it won't be a deal breaker for me.
I've been spoiled by Xposed, and do use hotspot for my N7. I also use some Tasker profiles that need root, so it's kind of a must for me. I agree with @rajuabju, at the rate things have been going, it won't be more than a few months. Who knows, maybe this latest Moto exploit will work. Or maybe the middleman will have codes for the Turbo. We'll know in a few weeks, I guess.

Lol, exactly why I won't get a phone without root. Xposed and the hacked hotspot app for VZW. Also why I would like it "permanently" unlocked (like the RAZR HD was - a blown fuse that can't be fixed or "patched" once destroyed), easier to flash SuperSU.zip onto the phone after every update without worrying about "is it safe to take the update or not? Will I lose root?"

No, wasn't trying to be sarcastic at all. I've been rolling with my S3 for the past 2.5 years and haven't been paying very much attention outside of that. I was somewhat aware that it was possible to pay some...one...thing...idk to get some of these Motorola devices unlocked--what a strange situation that is.

I would say there are probably equal odds that SunShine works for Turbo, or that Moto patched it. But given the propensity to root/unlock devices, it will happen rather quickly.
Sunshine won't work for the Droid Turbo, yet.
It only works for 4.4.3 and below, the Turbo will undoubtedly be released on 4.4.4 or 5.0, but that doesn't mean it won't eventually work. It's the only hope though.
I've been out of the CDMA loop for years and years and years now. Don't these phones use SIMs now? Is it just a matter of software unlocking GSM frequencies or is it still completely different hardware?
I was a phablet user for 2 years but went back to a N5 and am actually liking the smaller form factor, and would get this over the N6. A stock 5.0 port making this GPe would sure be sweet.
This phone looks geeat, but I'm on TMo.

The SIM is for LTE only, I believe. The rest is done over CDMA. I believe the N6 has a US edition and a world edition, so the US edition will work with all major carriers on all bands and won't really be "different". The Droid line is Verizon exclusive, so it will be locked to CDMA and Verizon's LTE bands.

If you're going to comment on a dev forum, at least understand the terminology before you use it... otherwise it makes you seem ignorant. "UNLOCKED" and "UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER" are two very different things that have ZERO to do with one another.
All LTE CDMA phones for the past 2 years that use a SIM are "unlocked", as this refers to the carrier lock that is placed on the device when it is sold in bulk to network providers (which is why you have three network settings in your phones setting menu - LTE, GSM, and Global). Don't use terminology you don't understand, as you're adding to the ignorance too many seem to have about what unlocking is and what unlocking a bootloader is. It makes it only that much harder for other individuals to get the correct information, and is the reason why a VZW rep tried to tell me I don't need a developer edition to unlock my phone, because all LTE devices are unlocked when I tried to explain I was looking for a developer edition so I could unlock the bootloader.
Very few Verizon phones have the capability to unlock the phone's bootloader, which allows for rooting without an exploit and the ability to flash custom ROMs (firmware), such as Cyanagenmod. Those of you believing root will appear on any new Motorola phones are not well versed in Motorola phones sold by Verizon. Dan Rosenberg, who is the person anyone with a Motorola device on Verizon has to to thank for the last half decade of being able to root your Motorola VZW phones, has repeatedly posted on numerous threads for over a year to not expect for your Motorola devices to be rooted and if you want root, either buy a Nexus or buy a Developer Edition (if VZW is going to release any more editions after the S5 is not known and information about Developer Editions for the Note 4 Droid Turbo have been repeatedly ignored by VZW's Public Affairs office). This is due to the fact VZW has wizened up and made finding an exploit on anything past 4.4.4 nigh impossible. Exploits that allow root access are not easy to find (taking several months for most VZW Moto root exploits) and as soon as one is found, within a matter of weeks, if not days, VZW will push an automatic update, forcing your phone to update to patch the exploit. This is why when you root your phone you're told to disable OTA updates at the apk level by freezing the update apk or removing it all together after making a backup of it.
Many Motorola users got a surprise in late Spring when a Moto employee "accidentally" included the exploited code that allowed you to blow the fuse and unlock the bootloader of devices running 4.4.2. That was a once in a billion opportunity that will probably never happen again. Every time an exploit has been found that allowed root access or the ability to unlock the bootloader (which was only recently cracked in the past year, possibly two... to put that in perspective, it took over half a decade for Dan Rosenberg to find the exploit that allowed the internal fuse to be blown, unlocking the bootloader). Exploits are not easy things to find, especially in Motorola devices running on VZW's network.
To all of those that like to post root bounties... BUY A DEVELOPER EDITION. You'll pay $300 for a device and then offer $300+ for a root bounty... which is the cost of developer edition device... considering VZW offers Edge, you no longer have to pay full retail in one go for a DE. From this point forward, VZW customers need to comprehend the fact that rooting will continue to be increasingly difficult to perform, most especially on Moto phones running on VZW's network. If you want root access, buy the S5 developer edition or wait until the first week of december to see if a developer edition for the Note 4 will be released (if a Note 4 DE is going to be released, it will occur within the 4 - 6 weeks following it's RTM on 10/23 [Thursday]).

Do you think that the Tubro will get rooted and unlocked?

Just decided to get the Turbo since the N6 is taking way too long to get released on Verizon. The black friday deals helped me get the phone for $50 today so I could not resist that deal for top of the line hardware.
What I am wondering though is what the community thinks about developer support for this phone? Do you think the bootloader will be unlocked? Do you think there will be root access?
If both of those are obtained do you think there will even be enough support for the phone to have some fun with ROMs? Honestly the only thing that I want to get my phone unlocked and rooted for is to get rid of all the bloatware that verizon put on my phone. The ONLY reason. The OS is stock enough for me already but I want to get rid of all those crappy red apps along with all these amazon promotions...
So what do you think? Is it possible to get rid of the bloatware without rooting or unlocking?

Disabling apps seems to work just as well as Titanium Backup. The only real difference I can think of is that the apps are not deleted from your phone, so while being able to remove bloat without root, it appears we still cant gain the used storage space back.

Disabling apps is a good option without root. Hard to say about root or BL unlock. Right now its seems extremely unlikely it will happen any time in the near future. Only hope is that the Moto Maxx will get a developer following which is close enough to Turbo.

I have this thought in the back of my head that the Moto Maxx and its unlocked bootloader will help us obtain root and bl unlock on the turbo. Its literally the exact same phone, I feel devs may have enough freedom to play around with the files of the Maxx, and find some similarities and exploits usable on the Turbo. Just my thought. Its the same phone and with supported unlock. Its so close to our turbos.
We might get root, and probably will at some point down the road. I doubt we will ever get an unlocked bootloader. The work that goes into doing that is very substantial, and with this being an exclusive device, is very unlikely.
Question for the OP.... why wouldn't you just buy the Nexus 6 straight from Google? Why is everyone talking about having to wait for Verizon to get it? But it from Google, and activate it on your account. Simple as that.

Have you tried getting it from the Play store? lol. It's like hoping to win the lottery, except you have to play all the time, every second of the day.
if no devs working on Droid turbo.we will never ever see bl unlocked or root
like happens with Droid maxx
I'm on an old contract with a family plan and we pay $100 for the plan and $30 per smartphone. From how I understand it the plan does not make you pay for the phone over time. When you upgrade you just get that money off. So I'd be paying $400 extra for the Nexus than I'd have to.

Plus the deals they had today were just TOO good. $200 off a turbo? I couldv'e "bought" the 32gb version for free.
Don't get me wrong. I love the phone. Easily the best 5.2in phone out there. I just want to root to help battery even more and help get rid of apps I don't use while adding a few features I will.
I too jumped on the 64gb turbo yesterday. After trading in my OG Droid for $100 off the phone cost $60 after tax.. Comparing this to the N6 isn't fair.. The N6 is huge. As much as I want Nexus, and all that cones with that I just can't use a 6" phone on a daily basis..

I was really excited for the N6 since it was first announced. Being 6'5" I was sure I'd love it. Went to the store the other day and I just couldn't shake how silly it looked in my hands. Such an enourmouse device. Screen was amazing though. I wish it was 5.7" and the same shape. Then it would be slightly smaller than the Note 4 since it makes better use of screen size efficiency. That would have been perfect IMO.
Now I'm hoping the turbo gets the Dev support it needs so I have the best of both worlds!

I get taking advantage of discounts / contracts. I was just saying, I see a bunch of people saying they can't wait any longer for the Nexus to come out on Verizon, when you can already get it from Google or eBay, or Amazon... and use it with Verizon. Heck, you can but it from T-Mobile, and use it with Verizon. And was wondering why people keep saying they can't wait any longer for Verizon to carry it, when that has no impact on it working with their network, and only impacts getting it either at a 2yr agreement price / spreading payments out over 2 years.

And if you're lucky it may be covered with Verizon logos and full of bloatware with a locked boot loader! We love you Verizon and all the things you do for us!

Purchase Force Z through Moto or Verizon?

If I get the Moto Z through Motorola will I bet getting an unlocked, rootable device? The other advantage is being able to get the 64GB option through Moto.
I think I have my answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z-force/help/verizon-vs-unlocked-t3423412
Unlocked but restricted or something like that..
As I understand the Z FORCE is exclusive to Verizon. So no matter where you get it, it will be locked down no root or bootloader unlocking.
I am going to go for the Verizon version since there seems to be little benefit to the Moto version. Plus, the Verizon version is only $15/mo at 0%...

That's for the regular Z, not the Force I believe.

PSA: The Visible version of this phone is bootloader unlockable (and cheaper)!

It's $336 with a $100 rebate after you pay your second bill. Unlimited data and hotspot included for $40 (first month is $25). It runs on Verizon's network and it has an unlockable bootloader. Hell of a deal. Just wanted to let my Merica' bros know. (Also I'm exicted to get some roms on this thing. Hope somebody's working on that.)
Other networks should work?

Should be able to use it on any network, with the right SIM, yes?
It has all the bands to work on any network, and if it's unlockable, then it shouldn't be tied down to Verizon.
So $336+25+40-100 = $301 effective price, and use on other network, drop Visible after 2 months. Since Z4 is $399 on Amazon, this seems like a clever way to go!

It's bootloader unlockable. Not carrier unlockable. (But I think they might ship the unlocked version of the phone. The model number is the retail version not the Verizon version.)

Well, maybe the Amazon version for $399 with 360 camera mod included is the best and safest deal, then.

Yeah, I'd only recommend this deal if you want to actually switch to Visible.
How would it compare to the G Power? Is the SD 675 better then the 665? The Power feels slightly sluggish at times. Im thinking about returning it and going with the Z4 for Amoled alone.

This phone was a little slow feeling on 9 but with the 10 update it's silky smooth. Battery life is great too and you can use the battery moto mods to improve it.
I'm diggin this phone... Visible ain't half bad either
