Thanks....there's a button. - Moto X General

K....this may get closed and/or flamed beyond recognition ....LOL....but here it is.
Not talking about myself here, cause I'm not near as active in the Moto x forum as I was in the t989 S2 forum. Mostly because I'm still learning all the ins and outs of this phone.....
I'm posting this on behalf of the Moto x unsung heros .....we all know who a few of them are, and there's some that go way above and beyond helping others....and many more that help some people tremendously......and I'm noticing a lot of "awesome, you're a life saver....thanks so much" comments, yet a giant lack of thanks given. I mean the thanks button. Not the typed words.
I know many will barge in here and say its not about racking up thanks totals you arrogant ass...LOL.........and it definitely isn't. BUT....hitting that button is a great way to let others see that this very helpful person has helped so many out...as indicated by his thanks number. It makes some feel good too....seeing that number rise. Petty? Some may say....but get a bunch for yourself....It does make you all warm and fuzzy seeing that people appreciate your help.
Anyway.....the reason I started this thread..... was simply a better alternative to singling people out in the threads and starting trouble, or making someone feel bad who's new and didn't know it even existed. Lol
The S2 community was more tightly nit I think and people weren't stingy with the thanks button....especially when someone went out of their way to help. But here in the X forum, there is handful of extremely helpful guys not getting thanked over and over....it astonishes me sometimes (won't name names....but a lot of us can think of a few I'm sure) and I just finished reading a thread where one of these good Samaritans posted back and forth helping a guy...not one sentence posts....huge long ones with very detailed help....and the guy did say thanks....but never thanked any of the good Samaritans posts. Not one.
Anyway....flame me to pieces if you'd like ....but come on guys....lets show people our appreciation in a way that follows that helpful guy anywhere he goes on xda. That's exactly why the button exists.
And no.....I don't expect thanks on this post. LOL. As I said....I'm no guru on the X.....yet.....I'll earn my thanks as I deserve them....or not.

But at the sametime people who beg for thanks annoy the heck out of me.

And I totally agree.

Its not really a beg, more as a demand that steers users away from using it. If you genuinely give advice all the time you'll get the thanks you deserve!

And you're right. But come on...you see a guy write tonnes of help to just one guy...and nada...not one thanks. Its either cause they don't know...or don't care. Or is there another catagory...."you helped me sure...but not good enough for me to expel the effort to click that button...so keep practicing!"
I'm not talking hit thanks for everything and anything replied to you....but when a guy types 1000 words in your thread...come on. Lol

Couldn't agree more. Even some of the smallest mods that we take for granted (let alone Roms and Feature addition) take lots of hours and effort. A single click of the "Thanks" button isn't something one should have to ask for.

Why? I started doing it back when I was doing a lot of development for various devices. I would sell one, stop developing for it, and then get constant PMs asking if I still had this device or that device and which device I was switching too. I don't need to do it anymore, but it's kind of addictive.

I like listing my devices, but if I started doing it again I'll probably use the
function.

I wish people would use the Thanks button more too. It costs nothing to do it and it's quicker than a post. You'll help let people know which posts are useful, contribute to the decluttering of threads and you get a warm feeling of boosting someone's e-rep. The only downside is that you're limited to X amount per day(IIRC). I should make that into a sig...maybe.

Hit the damn thanks button...

Seriously....its not hard. And no, trolls, I'm not whining because no one thanks my posts. Just look around at the ratio of downloads : thanks. You'll find simple .apk posts that have 110 views, but the post was only thanked 4 times. Please don't try to tell me that all 106 other people used the XDA app to download. I realize that you can only give 5 thanks a day, and the app has no button, but everyone here knows theres always been a serious lack of appreciation here in the Vibrant forum.
It's the easiest, most effortless way to show appreciation to someone, yet it seems at least half the forum can't take .28 seconds to hit the thanks button. Don't just download and run guys. Slam that button, and do it with a smile...cause you would expect the same.
Any time you download posted content, either via link, or via attachment...it is out of courtesy that you hit it every time....regardless of whether or not you liked the content. Also...dont just thank popular devs. Even if its someones first post, they still deserve recognition.

BOOM! Hit the thanks button, with some cheese on it.
Nobody cared about getting thanks until the thanks button showed up. I don't care if someone wants to feel special because some stranger on the internet clicked a button. Now all anyone does is solicit thanks from some nerds they don't even know. Who gives a damn.

youre such a rebel badass....classic vibrant user
yah we wouldnt want you to strain your finger muscles or anything. And the reason the "Thanks" button showed up was because of popular demand. It is a widespread feature across internet forums. Some people actually enjoy giving thanks....even if it is through a virtual, meaningless button......its certainly better than your deplorable attitude.
"hey, we'll take all the free roms, kernels, themes, apps, mods, etc. that we can get!! just dont expect us to press a 'Thanks' button, because WE think its a cheesey concept."
you dont care if someone wants to feel special?? interesting, well id bet youd want that person to care if you downloaded something of theirs and there turned out to be something wrong with it, right? Youre the type of person that downloads something....doesnt say thanks or leave any positive feedback....but then once you find something wrong, something you dont like, or something you WANT, THEN you will make the effort to jump on the forum and say a thing or two.
The bottom line is it doesnt matter what the hell you think about the Thanks button. If someone is kind enough to provide you with something that improves your phone experience, and all they ask from you to do in return is to move your mouse a couple inches to click the Thanks button?????....then you hit the friggen Thanks button!...quid pro quo, clarice.....

No I don't contribute much, but I try to help when I can. What I don't do is start threads whining about people not using the thanks button. Maybe I just don't get what the obsession is about the thanks button. Is it a popularity contest, or is their an achievement that we can unlock like in XBL or PSN?

The reason they leave, mainly, is for site hits. But I also think it's because the moderating on xda is so inconsistent, and sometimes hypocritical.
By keeping their content in a forum that they control, they are likely to have cleaner, productive threads...because anyone that flames/hinders production will ACTUALLY get disciplined.
But yes, I do agree that blasting the forum on the way out is cowardly....but I'm not going to point fingers. Just keep in mind that I kind of see where they are coming from.....people can be very unappreciative, and will jump at any chance to get on each other's case (see members above)....it gets annoying after a while, and starting a controlled environment can really cut that type of **** down...as opposed to letting the critters roam free

I find this thread hysterical. My thoughts...
I LOVE when someone hits "thanks" - it is natural to feel good when someone appreciates you/your efforts.
I HATE when...
people whine about not getting thanks
or make posts about "click thanks" (defeats the f'ing point of the button / clutter)
and I hate when people make their signatures all about hitting their thanks button.
Both sides of the "argument" are right in this thread.

Still laughing myself. Well played BT.

Just a quick ? about saying "Thanks"...

Ok so basically, this is a rant for all forums not specifically this one...but I've noticed in a lot of the threads I read through people asking this or how to do that or can someone do this or where can I find that...now imagine how easy it is to click the thanks button the forum developer put on posts, hell even saying thank you in the thread??? Alot easier than it was for someone to take the time to answer your question or help you out?
I see this all the time on all the forums...
So why is it that most people don't do it?? Serious question? Has it come down to just being a gimme gimme gimme world? And trust me with 6 kids in my house I understand that...but my 2 year old neice says bless you when you sneeze or thank you for whatever reason it is deserved??
So why is it that some grown ass men or women or even teenagers on these forums can't even say thanks? Lol. That thanks button is there...well atleast my view on it...so that when someone gives me advice or a suggestion I see they have been thanked umpteen times or however many times and I'm like well this person seems credible? And it may not seem like it to everyone, but to me it kind of makes you feel good that you helped someone and they took the time to thank you Seriously people...we need to start thanking those that deserve it!!
And again this was a rant for all the forums I frequent not this one, not any specific thread, and not about me getting thanks because I dont care if I do or don't...I'm not a Dev, I'm not a Themer, I'm just a guy that visits forums and passes along info and knowledge I've recieved from people that I have thanked
And this will be on the other forums I frequent also since not everyone is on XDA
Thanks for reading
Now what are your thoughts
Edit** And for those that say I use forum "X"s app and there isn't a thanks button but I thank later from a computer, this isnt about not getting thanked right away...just not getting thanked at all **
I think people asking those questions over and over don't even know it...
If it was a little more in your face they would probably press it like after you reply it should ask ...would you like to thank?
Thank you!

Thank you...I too get a little irked when you spend a couple of days working with someone, fix their issue and then they are gone. BTW I thanked you!
Honestly, I liked XDA better when there wasn't a thanks button, then people wouldn't complain about it being used

Appreciate your honesty but again in my post I said it's not about the thanks button not being used
Even though I can point out I don't know how many posts in a single ROM thread that a person has an issue or question and it is answered or solved and like stated above...they are gone ...it's not about the button...but the lack of the common courtesy of saying thank you
*thanked for your honesty
IDK, one of my biggest pet peeves are people who are like panhandling for "thanks". The people who say "don't forget to thanks if I helped you" and things like that. To me its a meaningless number under my username. I guess its nice knowing you helped someone by them "thanking" you, but 99% of the time that I help a person, they actually write out a comment to me thanking me for helping them.
Yea, its a rude move not to thank a person that is helping you, but I don't help people for thanks. I help people because if I know something that can help them, I can make their day/life a tiny bit easier and then someone else will do the same for me.

That's exactly it! It's not about the thanks button lol Everyone is refering this to that lol
I only referenced the number because like I said...why is it really there? I think to let others know that you've been a help to someone previously....
It's about the lack of the common courtesy
That's why in my sig it says if "someone" has helped you not me! lol If you say thanks in a post back great! If you click the button cool! Just thank the person helping you somehow!
Edit: And thats another thing its about paying it forward I'm always helping people on the side of the road, or getting off the top of their cars during a flood...But unless they thank you how do you know that you helped them?

Thank you for everything.

I want to just take a second and say thanks for ALL the support I have received from most of you since I started out here. I realize that Autism and Android were an unlikely pair but I thought it worked well.
Lately there has been an increasing level intolerance for what I was trying to do here. I know it's a vocal minority but they have become louder and louder. I have become quite disheartened as of late with the direction this forum has taken and I'm going to step back for a while. My ultimate goal is to further the spread of Autism Awareness and hopefully get Android4Autism launched by the end of the summer or early fall and so I'm going to redirect my efforts there.
I honestly had the best of intentions with everything I was doing here but it has apparently run it's course. Aside from asking you to "think about donating your old devices for the Android4Autism project (and I specifically said not until after everything was set up and legit so that everyone was protected) and votes, I never asked for anything. Despite the claims that have been made to the contrary about my intentions.
I want to thank everyone for voting for my blog but as you may notice the thread has been moved after being here for over 2 1/2 months. I realize that it was not "on topic" but it was a positive thread. I thought it was amazing how everyone unified and worked together for a common goal. I suspect that the vocal minority contributed to this and that saddens me. I'm not angry this happened, it's just that fact that some people would take it upon themselves to get this removed from our forums after all this time, instead of just not reading it.
I'm not looking for anything out of this. After all you have given to me, I felt I owed you an explanation for my decision. That's the very least I can do. I'll never be able to repay all the kindness and support you have shone to both me and my family. You have all made a difference in our lives. You have helped to spread awareness and for that I will forever be grateful.
Please don't turn this into a flame war either. I'll close the thread myself. I just want everyone to understand how grateful I am for everything and that my stepping back is my choice. My methods are becoming the target for some people and I won't change the way I'm doing things because I believe in what I'm doing. So the best thing is to just walk away. At least for now.
You all know where to find me and I'm happy to help. Please feel free to contact me through my blog or Google+ if you need anything and I will do whatever I can to help you.
Thanks again for everything. I'm very proud of what we were able to accomplish. Please help to keep this community moving forward.
Rob

Just as hard as it is to follow the forum rules. Say for instance that I considered the elimination of homosexualaity a "positive cause". Should I be allowed to push that agenda here at the cost of the owners of the site simply because I think this is a positive agenda? (According to some users, yes...)

Rob asked us to not turn it into a flaming thread, but you sure don't make it easy. Funny how you have been on xda 2 months, but have only posted 21 times and you choose to post on this... why are you trying to start something?

Regardless of what Rob has given to us (the community) why does he not have to follow the rules of the forum? Why is it appropriate for him to come and complain that his thread was moved to the correct forum and he is quitting because he disagrees with the opinion of those that pay for and/or manager this resource to be available to us?
@dnathan13: Regarding your comment on my membership length here... What Android software have you developed in your lengthy membership in these forums?
Medic,
I got another one for you, like old times: "The best way to fight negative acts is with perseverance, love and the truth"
Stay the course my friend and don't let nobody tell you lies about the truth you cary...

+1 no matter how kind and sincere you can be in a post there is always gonna be the one degenerate at the keyboard thinking "How can I dump on this guy."
As for the OP, keep up the good work bro

Fail to see how pointing out that we must play by the rules the owners of this site set is "dumping on someone". It's reality, if you don't like it create your own forum and set the rules...
EDIT: I have nothing against Rob's cause and believe the thread is in the correct forum now...
Rob, I've supported you ever since I heard about you and your cause. You are one of the few members here that has gained my respect. I thank you for *Everything* you've done here.

Just as hard as it is to follow the forum rules. Say for instance that I considered the extermination of homosexuals a "positive cause". Really?
I don't believe any HUMAN being would have a problem with autism awareness.
Like comparing apples and oranges.
Smh
Thanks Rob. I've enjoyed reading and learning from you. I've been a member pretty much since the epic launched, lurked and just read alot; lately its hard not to respond to some of this.

Keep that head up Rob we are all still behind you. You showed us a piece of yourself and your family here and became a friend to most of us. Keep in mind one thing, you are dealing with a lot of minors on heee and they cant grasp the idea they are ****ting on you with some of the comments about your intentions. They arent mature enough to see how it comes out. The mature adults will remain on your side.
Never feel you asked for anything or too much. Your community came together to give you what you deserved without you asking for it.
Take a rest man play with those kids, your headed in the right direction with the autism awareness, families will benefit from your sweat!

well, i don't think anyone cares about what you do.
so, bye, and... someone should delete this useless thread.
Should have held out till next month for the Galaxy Nexus
It's too bad XDA is overrun with assholes. If you don't care he's leaving, then don't reply and his post will quickly fall the bottom and no one has to read it. Take your insecurities out on someone in real life; see how that works out for you.
G1-8701, peace out. Enjoy your new phone. Though, you should really check out the new Atrix 2. It's way underrated and the sleeper phone of the year (or couple months, whatever it turns out to be).

On so many levels, XDA used to be so much different. (AKA a lot friendlier)
The people trolling in threads and others retaliating with profanity is exactly why we are seeing more and more devs leaving.
We need to have more "community" going on around here. If you don't like a thread, please fight the urge to ignore it instead of getting into a flame war.
And on that note, can we please lock this up?...
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Agreed. I tried making a thread to get people too come togther and acomplish something for the betterment of our device and of course same deal someone had too come in and run there mouth. I should have ignored him but spoke my mind and now my thread is closed. Come on people were all on here because we like our device not too argur and pick fights with people.

This kind of thread is not necessary. Closed.

Public service announcement : Requesting Thanks

I wasn't going to say anything but I must. Some member/members are getting out of control with the "thanks" whoring. When you get to the point that you ask for a "thanks" at the end of every one of your damn posts, ya need to chill. Its annoying. If someone wants to thank you they will.
I'm not going to name anyone but a member went as far as to require "thanks" before they would release a certain item people were waiting on! F*n really?
If you didn't know, "thanks" do not make you cooler, smarter, a better member, more popular, or make your e-penis bigger
Carry on.......

I wish there was a 'No Thanks' selection, that way, we could negate some of the thanks people had built up, meaning once you start being useful you must continue to do so...or never start to begin with...
I see some users with high thanks meters and then start being real jerks...
Exactly. What really took the cake for me was seeing someone not only asking for thanks in every one of their freaking posts, whether helpful or not, but then they said they would not post an eagerly awaited update to one of their "products" unless people started hitting the thanks button. Ridiculous
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
The "THANKS" button is apparently the most used and abused button I observed so far.
And I agree, some even go to the extent in using it as a bargaining chip to provide help to others.
Geez!! What a shame... If u want to help others then help them. Don't go to the point of resorting to some mild form of blackmailing.others to thank you.
Thanking someone is when people appreciates your help and effort and for you not to expect anything in return.
It is heartily given!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I too hate it when people beg for thanks in each and everypost, but the thing is nobody even bothers to hit thank for a well written and lengthy post
But that does not justify unnaturally large signatures with thank.requests.
Ps - that's another thing I hate ..large signatures, most often the reply would be a few sentences and the damn signature would take up half the page.
From the Moderator
Posting about people not having the consideration to provide a "thanks" when they are helped or given improvements to their phone....... is neither lame or random. It is a big problem in this site/forum. So many Developers leave because of all in the inconsideration shown to them, people complaining like they are some sort of slave. It is your device take responsibility for once in your life.
Be Kind and show "thanks" when people help you, it helps the site and everyone.
To those trolls who think it is cute to be sarcastic, immature, usually, know little about these devices, so keep your lame comments to yourself. Those who continue on being offensive... there is no tolerance for it, you will get infracted and banned......
Be respectful, be helpful, hit the thanks button when you get help and enjoy improving your device because of this website.
Oh and for what it is worth....... I hate big signatures/Banners as well, but per the rules they are allowed **sigh**
Oka1 (moderator)
I agree, There have been some very helpful and knowledgeable people around here with hardly any thanks at all, It seems like if you dont have many thanks people dont take you seriously.
I agree we should all thank each other for almost anything that is helpful, Demanding thanks is a bit silly..
Im just here to learn and to help, If i get thanked along the way then thats a bonus :cyclops:
I know lots of people with LOTS of thanks and RC / RD / RT titles, But they are complete assholes ! It doesnt make you cool at all !
We are a community, A giant family if you like. Lets just be nice and treat each other with respect :victory:
Oh and by the way, My e-Penis is bigger than yours lol
EDIT: Not to be sarcastic or anything, But I am actually out of thanks for the day !! typical !!
Why give a ****e about thanks meter anyway lol.; It's a candy for adults never passing the age of 7
People beg on Facebook for likes, here for thanks, wondering where the world is heading to! :/ if you're helpful, you will be thanked, and even if you don't get one more 'thanks' to your collection, it hardly matters.
Edit: Try impressing a girl by showing the huge number of thanks you have on XDA. She will kick you in the nuts! Nobody cares!
