[Q] Cannot write in to SD card (GN3 SM-N900 Kitkat 4.4.2) - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I live in Thailand.
Galaxy Note3 (SM-N900) was updated to Kitkat4.4.2 yesterday.
When updating, it became impossible to write in a micro SD card.
New holder addition, file copy & paste, delete, and an application backup etc. cannot be performed.
Both are not made although checked by ES file manager and the ASTRO file manager.
But the photo taken with the standard camera can be saved on SD card.
Was the permission method to SD card changed?
Doesn't someone know the solution?

There is quite a few threads about this as it has been discussed at length, most of which also provide a fix.

This worked for me

g2 f30s write protecting sd card

Hi
Ive got an f320s and for some reason it write protects all sd cards i use, so when i use third party apps like es file explorer or if i direct my torrent directory to external sd, it won't write on it. any ideas? im using latest OS on stock unrooted
f320s20g
4.4
thanks
Please help..
I can only affirm that bug.It caused by Kitkat. On my F320K I can't copy files on SD by wireless connection, only onto internal storage. And I can't make a folder in SD card by Total Commander, only can move files from internal flash to SD one by one. The native file manager works fine with SD card though and can easily move whole folder from internal to SD card
Probably its a bug, IDK

Promising, ill try and wait for the other guy to link me root/cwm on f320s kitkat as i cant find the thread for some reason then will try. This gives me hope
OK, I found out, IT'S not a bug, Google f**ked up us once again, it's official behavior now. No program is allowed to write on external SD storage any more, except the stock programs (LG camera still store images to SD card DCIM folder and LG file manager can write, move and delete files on SD)
Other programs are allowed to write data ONLY to there subfolder in folder external_SD/Android/Data
Spread this info and me thinks that this curse is forever upon us
It's from here http://source.android.com/devices/tech/storage/. The same s*1t goes on on Galaxy Note 3 with Kitkat update, I presume that Galaxy S4 will be affected too
i think this thread will help you

Navigation maps problem

Hello,
Can't get Locus and Tomtom working on my note 3
the Navigation programms are installed and are working fine, however it is not possible to get any access to the navigation maps
Already did the work around in this Topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
(is this only working for media or also data)
Also changed the path, where the Navigation maps are stored, even stored the navigation maps in the main storage
it seems to me, that the Navigation programs are looking for the navigation maps a non excisting map, or can't acces that map.
Anybody an idea, Tia
Hi,
I had a similar problem after flashing the official 4.4.2 ROM from Samsung, and applying the same fix.
I just used Root Explorer to move the whole TomTom directory from the root of the External SD card to the root of the internal SD, (NOT phone memory) and then it all worked with no worries.
Hope this helps you out.

Hi wiebew
Apologies for not getting back sooner, I've been out most of the weekend.
Just fyi, I had this problem when I updated to the official Samsung 4.4.2 (N9005XXUENA6_N9005OXXENA5_XEH). I'm running rooted using Chainfires awesomely easy to use, CF Auto Root.
This is what I did, step by step.
1 - Using Root Explorer, I copied the tomtom directory from the root of the extsd card
2 - I then pasted the tomtom directory to the root of the internal sd card. So afterwards it was /storage/sdcard0/tomtom. I may have rebooted, but can't honestly remember now, sorry.
I didn't have to change any permissions or anything else, after this copy/paste procedure TomTom started to work again.
I've since updated to the latest official Samsung ROM (N9005XXUENB3_N9005OXXENB1_XEO) and TomTom is still working quite happily.
Hope this helps, if there is anything else I can do to help let me know.

[Q] Lollipop & SD Card

So I updated to Lollipop via the root method in this forum. My apps are having problems accessing the SD Card. For example, in PowerAmp, I can't delete music on my sd card. Titanium backup will not create backups because it can't access the SD Card. BitTorrent Sync is another app that doesn't have access to the SD Card.
I thought that Lollipop allowed apps to have access to the Sd Card now unlike Kit Kat. I believe the App has to be written to take advantage of this in Lollipop. Is the issue that my apps don't support this? Is there some fix i can do like in kit kat? Is anyone else having this problem?
You're correct. It depends on the app. For instance, es file explorer will prompt for it and have you select the bottom level of the sd card ( I know, it's the root directory, but didn't want to use that term because it has nothing to do with the phone being rooted and wanted to avoid confusion)...anyway, after that selection you can do things as expected through that app and the sdcard. btw, I'm completely stock.
Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
When I upgraded to lollipop I couldn't write or delete from my sd card. Even with es file explorer. I had to go to the play store and find an app to fix it. Just search SD Fix and choose one with good ratings (I can't remember the one I used)
are you both rooted/custom Rom? for stock and me at least, I just updated to lollipop then updated the es file explorer app and that was it.

I am rooted, no custom ROM. I just installed ES File Explorer (didn't have it installed before) and I was able to navigate to the SD Card and delete files. So I'm wondering if PowerAmp, TBU and BitTorrent Sync don't have the functionality yet? I'm going to try and un-install and re-install each one and see if that helps. When I upgraded from KK to LP, I did a data restore for apps. Not sure if that might have messed anything up.
I think you're probably OK and didn't mess anything up...best bet is to check with the app dev directly to see if they've considered or are possibly working towards that. So far, I've only encountered one app that uses that functionality from my set of many that's installed...that one is es file explorer. I'm checking with the devs of a couple others I use.

So I wonder if I should just use an SD Card Fix app in the meantime because I really need the ability for those 3 apps to edit files on my SD Card.
not sure, but sounds like it worked for briantacker. If it does work for you, please post what you did & which app you used so that others may profit from your success as well.

Ok, so I tried un-installing and re-installing BitTorrent Sync but I was still getting a message that it did not have permission to write to the SD Card. So I installed this, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix , even though it's for Kit Kat and it worked. I've only tested it with BitTorrent Sync but I'm sure it will work with the other two apps.

Sd card fixer for kit kat worked for me. Titanium works fine now and i can backup to the extsdcard.
Sent from either galaxy tab 10.1 4.4.4 or Verizon Galaxy S5 on rooted 5.0
Yeah, looks like that fixed my issue with Titanium backup and Poweramp.
From what I can tell, even though I used the app you recommended, not all apps get access. The one that I found that didn't is didn't is Dolphin Browser. I was hoping to be able to save to card. Oh well. I know the fix worked because titanium backup will backup to card. I guess that I may have to email the developer.

Titanium backup issue with Lollipop

Hi,
I have upgraded my note 4 to Lollipop stock rom and have rooted it.
Titanium backup Pro doesn't work when the destination backup directory is on the
external card. It says : «the folder is not writable» although I can manually copy files to my external Card and to the the Titanium Backup folder using a file manager like Total Commander.
I had before the same issue with Kitkat and have applied the SD card fix permission. But this application doesn't work with Lollipop.
Any help please.
Thank you,
Daniel

hi ,
i can only add that i have N910F ,rooted and on v5.0.1 (Lollipop )
i have Titanium pro on my device and i have the app NextApp SDFix ( play store ) on device.
Yesterday , i " re run " NextApp SDFix and then in Titanium specified my backup folder on ext sd and backed up all my apps to sd ( something like 239 apps / data ).No problem .
i must add first time ( after flashing Lollipop ) i tried to backup with Titanium and it told me the specified folder
was not " root ... writeable /or something like that etc......."
i re run sdfix and no problem afterwards .it accepted the folder location as writeable and backed up .
So i can confirm from my experience ,you can backup to ext sd with Titanium etc etc ..
Maybe clear sdfix cache or Titanium ?
good luck
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Sd fix from nextapp but when starting the application, I am receiving the message : No action required.
@Birana and @willcor: Have you already used this patch before with Kitkat and the same SD card?
The solution is maybe to reformat the SDcard .
Daniel
SOLVED
I have reformatted my SD card and now it works.
Thumbs up

This is what precisely Sd fix from nextapp does.
I had the same issue in a fresh install of lollipop (CM12) and I got it to work by selecting (Menu >preferences> backup folder location) "Storage provider" and choosing "Documentprovider storage" & choosing the external sdcard (not the folder in the card). After that choose the appropriate folder or do a scan.
Anyone else had these 2 problems with Titanium Backup since upgrading to lollipop?
"Mount namespace separation" error message on start up (not sure what this means)

Anybody having problems with the speed of backups when using "DocumentProvider storage"? My backups that took 20 minutes in KitKat (after SDCard fix) are now taking 8 hours in Lollipop (using DocumentProvider).
This post is old(ish), but thanks guys; I had no idea that the back button had that functionality. I note that the SDFIX utility says it is for KitKat, but worked for Lollil=pop 5.0.1 on my Note 4.

Way to go man
Tho it's silly that we gotta do drastic measures like format the card for it to write to ext-SD card. I thought Kitkat had restrictions like writing to SD card's but Lollipop had done away with it & made life easier for ppl with external memory? or am i wrong?
Thanks Next app worked for me !

I don't think we have to root to obtain write access. In Android 5 (Lollipop) there is a new official way for apps to write to the external SD card whereby Apps must ask the user to grant write access to a folder on the SD card. They open a system folder chooser dialog. The user need to navigate into that specific folder and select it.
But in my case, the external SD does not shows when the system folder choose dialog box opens

Well, It doesn't work as it supposed to. Maybe worth filling a bug on HTC support site too, I haven't got to that yet
Same here
Same here , the granting was ok in the M9 , but after upgrading to M9+ ( or downgrading ) I face this problem , and no body in the Internet seems to solve it without root , waiting for the update , for sure it'll be solved in the marshmallows update , but when it will come , sure after the M8 ,and that's why I mention downgrading above , everything was OK in the M9 in term of performance , then they pushed out the M9+ to the market with some improvement ( the camera still ****ty without RAW support , the qhd is not a big deal , the fingerprint scanner is great, but the performance is bad , to be honest m it's bad even in the daily usage and no fast charging , which is supposed to be supported by the mediateck processor ) so it's another disappointment from HTC , , They had all the perfect elements but they didn't made the perfect device , I'm pretty sure that the M10 will be their last chance , let's wait and see
After all , not only HTC making a good build quality smartphone with premium design and awesome software, we can have a nexus now right .
