g2 f30s write protecting sd card - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Ive got an f320s and for some reason it write protects all sd cards i use, so when i use third party apps like es file explorer or if i direct my torrent directory to external sd, it won't write on it. any ideas? im using latest OS on stock unrooted
f320s20g
4.4
thanks

Please help..

I can only affirm that bug.It caused by Kitkat. On my F320K I can't copy files on SD by wireless connection, only onto internal storage. And I can't make a folder in SD card by Total Commander, only can move files from internal flash to SD one by one. The native file manager works fine with SD card though and can easily move whole folder from internal to SD card
Probably its a bug, IDK

I don't have a sd card on my G2 but my galaxy tablet had the same issue. Maybe if you check out the info here it might help to figure out how to fix it on your phone? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458021

Promising, ill try and wait for the other guy to link me root/cwm on f320s kitkat as i cant find the thread for some reason then will try. This gives me hope

OK, I found out, IT'S not a bug, Google f**ked up us once again, it's official behavior now. No program is allowed to write on external SD storage any more, except the stock programs (LG camera still store images to SD card DCIM folder and LG file manager can write, move and delete files on SD)
Other programs are allowed to write data ONLY to there subfolder in folder external_SD/Android/Data
Spread this info and me thinks that this curse is forever upon us
It's from here http://source.android.com/devices/tech/storage/. The same s*1t goes on on Galaxy Note 3 with Kitkat update, I presume that Galaxy S4 will be affected too

i think this thread will help you

Which SanDisk app are you referring to?
SD card issue
I have the same problem (N9005, 32GB Samsung SD card) - after the update:
- Mybackup Pro is not able to backup on SD card (before it worked well)
- File mamager X-Plore can not create new folders on the external SD card
- similar with the Astro file manager
Only the system-own file manager can create folders. Reading from the card is possible.
After formatting the card: still the same problem.
has anyone additional information?
It's because of the security features of KK... These older apps aren't yet "approved" by Samsung. It has something to do with a simple permission to write to the sd card.
As was stated "Only the system-own file manager can create folders" as this is Samsung approned. Until the Apps are updated and the Samsung seal of approval given these may have trouble...
There is no problem if rooted...
I am truly enjoying KitKat but I wish I could get Titanium to back up to the external sd card.
I guess I will wait like everyone else for the app to get approval from Samsung. Perhaps that will come with the "official' release of KitKat.
Yes, I am rooted and it still cannot back up to the external sd.

Use External SD fix for KitKat - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215

Take Kitkat update OR keep Jelly Bean ?

Hi all:
this time I see Google insist that any new smartphone should be ships with the latest Android version.
What Google is looking for in KitKat ?
For me I will not update to KitKat !
Because of the following:
"The WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission must only grant write access to the primary external storage on a device. Apps must not be allowed to write to secondary external storage devices, except in their package-specific directories as allowed by synthesized permissions."
That means your microSD card is secondary storage and apps will not be allowed to use it, Google has screwed up the KitKat API as they think there is a big security problem with external SD cards !!!!!
Oh... your SD Card is completely useless, applications will no longer be able to create, modify or remove files and folders on your external SD card. As a for-instance, you can no longer use a file manager to copy files from your computer to the SD card over a network.
in short Google want you to use their cloud services instead of your SD card, I feel like we are going back in time, and Samsung is involved in this game.

There is already a fix for that
I'm using KitKat and have no problem with ext.sd. everything is working good.
KK goes without saying!!!

Well, my S4 is not rooted , that fix also could miss your phone, I don't know what is the point in having a MicroSD slot, then Kitkat will make it useless !!!
as it is not enough that Touchwize rom taking much of the phone storage, but Kitkat will make things even more hard !!!!
Guys just be aware of what you are going to do with your S4

This thread will probably help you if you follow the points step by step. It´s originally written for the Note 3 but can be equally applied for the S4. If it doesn´t, then your SC card is likely to be broken and you´ll need to get a new one.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply but I don't think this will work, nevertheless I will try it an post the result here. My card is definately not broken because it works in my computer and in other devices as well.

KitKat disabled SD Card support for anything other than regular files. this means you cannot move apps to a SD card anymore, you have to roll back to a Jelly Bean rom, or use SDFix, run it, and then use Link2SD to move your apps.

You may also try to "fix Permissions" in recovery

Thanks for not reading the text you quoted. As I said I already tried other android version and had the exact same problem. And things like sd fix don't work sdfix tells me that I already have permission and no change is required..

[Q] Has note 3 got the sdcard fix?

Has galaxy note 3 gotten the 4.4.3 which fixes the sdcard write restriction? Or does it still have to be rooted to write to the sdcard?
??? Why?
I was on Stock ND3, my sd card is fine.
I change to stock NE4, and everything is ok with my sdcard.
And both I tried without root.

yes it has gotten the OTA fix update a good while back.
i am using it.. i got the sd card fix on android 4.4.2 .. android 4.4.3 has other fixes

Does Samsung released 4.4.3 for Note 3? I’m using 4.4.2 updated recently but still not sd card write permission fixed.
4.4.3 is barely out for the Nexus, it's going to be a while before we see it on the Note 3.
What they fixed in the recent 4.4.2's is the ability to read from the MicroSD.

Yes I heard that same, but this post confused me.
Read or write? mine from the start read well all data by external/non stock apps but cant write. After a recent update few weeks back its still does same. I use wifi FTP to transfer files but its cant write in SD card.

When the first 4.4.2 update came out, 3rd party apps couldn't even read the SDcard. Samsung fixed that problem in the consequential update.
You still can't write to it without either A, apps that use a workaround, or B, Root Access.
ES File Explorer, for instance, works. (For the most part, renaming doesn't.)

All right, I didnt know that. My phone came with 4.4.2 stock and just one or two updates after that and didnt see this (sd card read) issue never. Thanks for the clarification.

Workaround for Ext-SD

My last phone had no internal SD, and no problems.. The G3 has an internal sd and I cannot write to External at all due to some sort of security feature -- even with root. In Xplore File Manager it has a workaround to transfer files to the Android/data folder, but I didn't realize and made a nandroid backup to Ext-SD in TWRP before trying my first rom and nothing was written and no error given, thus losing all my data (Luckily I made a stock backup and copied to PC for archive before any modding).
Is there a way to unlock this "feature" on the G3 or is my external sd basically useless? This was one of the main selling points vs the Nexus for me.. Really disappointed.

Use xposed framework module kitkat sd card full access
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Free mobile app
That's it? Amazing, thank you for the quick response and sorry for being to lazy to search.. Was at work and just popped into my head to ask.
Edit: are you using it on your g3? Some comments say it doesn't work on 4.4 and to use foldermount instead.. I know were still on 4.2 on the 852, but if ill need to switch again id rather use the most permanent fix available.
I'm going to try this regardless, just curious what everyone uses to work around this.. Also, what xplore app do you use to utilize this fix. Not seeing an "official" xplore app.
Its funny, on the main display card in phone dealers it says memory upgradable to 128gb.. I find it humorous that your average person would not be able to easily use it without being savvy with computer/phone tweaking.. Ran into a similar issue on my roommates xperia j, forcing me to try apps like app2sd which did not work well at all either -- very frustrating to say the least. I honestly fail to see the reasoning for the complexity here as you can easily have multiple storage mediums on a computer.. This "security feature" makes no sense to me. Lol
Edit: I need to rely more on google than asking redundant questions. For future reference, googling "xposed framework installer" yielded a result for the main XDA thread for it.. *facepalm*
