[Q] sucesffuly rooted and Flashed CWM Recovery.. still only boots to stock recovery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

AT&T 1337
Pretty much as the title states
Rooted phone with motochopper, superuser stuff is all good
Downloaded and ran ROM Manger off the store
Recovery setup
installed recovery
successfully installed, rebooted phone
loaded ROM manager again, checked recovery setup, shows current recovery as ClockworkMod Recovery..
so.. yea, everything went off without a hitch.. except when I try to boot into recovery, be it via rom manager or manually, it still just boots into the stock recovery..
I re-read the directions (went off cyanogenmod wiki)
I know Im missing something, but.. what?
EDIT: Well crap. I noticed the install directions I was going off of were for I337UCUAMDB or I337UCUAMDL
I have 1337UCUAMF3
IM guessing I probably need a different version of CWM.

With MF3 you can only you safe strap. Get acquainted with that thread and how safe strap works and unfortunately you can only flash stock based ROMs with stock kernels. No custom ones like CM or AOKP.

Yea, I just found that out..
Let me tell you what kicked this off, maybe you have a suggestion..
Ever since the last update (4.3) the (long stream of expletives) Samsung music player has developed a mind if its own in regards to bluetooth.
There are similar gripes all over the web, but my specific one is that whenI sync the phone to my car OR to my bluetooth unit in my motorcycle helmet.. The samsung music player has decided that IT is the default media player, and there is no way to change it.
So when I hit the play button in my car.. instead of iheart radio, or pandora starting IT starts... and IT just randomly plays any and all audio files on the phone, it doesn't even limit itself to a directory.. I have to unlock the phone, and turn it off... not bad right?
Well on the motorcycle helmet is where its a real bastard.. my SENA unit has 3 buttons VOL+ VOL- and FUNC
the function button by default pauses or plays audio from the default audio player on the connected bluetooth device.. my default being Pandora radio.
Now.. I fire up pandora, put the phone in my jacket and off I go... happy times... vroom vroom.. well a call comes in... the unit pauses the audio player for the call, and resumes it when the call has ended... which has always worked fine... but NOW instead of pandora just picking up where it left off, the goddamn samsung music player starts instead, playing whatever random sounds or recordings are on the phone, actually to be more precise, what happens is pandora starts, then samsung music player starts, which pauses pandora...
So I have to pull over, dig my phone out of my pocket, close samsung music player and start pandora... every single time I get a call, or if I just want to pause and resume the music.. this happens.. Im sure you understand the frustration.
You cant disable it, you can force stop it but it will start again the next time any bluetooth device is connected... Its an unstoppable pile of **** and I want it GONE..
thats what started my cyanogen odyssey..
Ive searched quite a bit, found many people with the same problem, all asking how to disable or remove it.. no solution.

Well, I did (hopefully) find a workaround, an app called bluetooth connect and play. Playing with it on my helmet and it works perfectly.
Still wish i could get rid of all the ABSOLUTE CRAP that Samsung and ATT have piled on this phone..

I don't know if this is going to work for you but it seems to work for me. MK2 / SafeStrap 3.71 / SHOstock v3 on stock slot
I have this app, I disabled (must have root if on stock MK2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758

I've lost root access, and strangely now cannot get it back, superuser says KNOX is detected, and cannot be disabled. Root checker now says I no longer have root access. A few hours ago it was fine, no issues.
Can't believe you buy a device, and are forbidden from having control over the programs on it.
It's like buying a house, and the realtor telling you what curvature you can and can't have.

How did you use motochopper and the Loki exploit if you were on mf3? Are you sure you were ever actually rooted ?
I'd suggest you try the Kingo root option and see if that works to root.

Stock music app not working after flashing

Hi,
Few weeks ago, around EB13 days, my epic on bonsai rom went haywire. After an unexpected reboot (phone froze so I had to pullout the battery), the phone had FC all over and had boot loops.
I had to odin couple of times and flash roms couple of times to get the phone working. During that time, SD contents viewed from my phone had all the letters corrupted. But after odin EC03, thing went back to normal.
Now, I am running nicely in SRF 1.1.0 in EC03. Everything works well but stock music app freezes whenever I tried to skip a song.
First music selected works, but it freezes when I select different song.
I noticed this with winamp and new federico WP7 music app.
But poweramp works, so I use that for now.
But I want to use new federico's WP7 music app. Anyone have ideas I should try?

I would say one of the 3 DRM files have been removed, but if one music player works, they should all work...
Im getting tired of changing this...
I do have 2 drm files frozen. Maybe that is the reason? I will try after I thaw those two files.
Edit: nope.. not working... I will try backing up sd and format it.

Status/Quality of CM7.2

For a number of reasons, I'm thinking of rooting my Droid R2D2 and installing CM7.2. Given that I'm on 2.3.4 and the hoops required to root it, I would love it if someone could verify that the following features all work on their Droid2 or R2D2 with CM7.2. I haven't been able to find a consolidated list of what does or doesn't work on this particular phone. I'll update this post with reported statuses as people respond for others to use as a reference.
Comments in blue are consolidated feedback from others. Comments in green are my own experiences after taking the plunge.
Phone calls: Yes Confirmed
3G Data: Yes Confirmed
WiFi: Intermittent. Sometimes people have to reboot every time you toggle, but not everyone has this issue I've noticed sometimes when on WiFi I lose all data connectivity. Disabling WiFi sometimes fixes it, but not always. Rebooting seems to do the trick every time though.
GPS: Yes Confirmed
Phone-over-Bluetooth: Yes Confirmed
Stream Audio over Bluetooth: Yes, possible lag entering menus/rotating screen/unlocking due to using power amp Pandora works fine for me
Still Camera: Yes Confirmed
Video Camera: Yes Confirmed
Physical Keyboard: Every key except 'ALT LOCK' Confirmed
Motorola Desktop Dock detection/integration: Yes, though it doesn't seem to remember that I've hit the brightness/dim button between inserts as it used to when on stock.
Motorola Car Dock detection/integration: Yes
SMS/MMS (I use Google Voice for most of my SMS needs, but for sake of completeness):Yes SMS - yes. MMS - haven't tested.
In addition, if you could address the following, that would be great: One of the reasons I want to get rid of the installed firmware is because of a strange problem I have when I stream audio over bluetooth to my car. The problem is: when I'm streaming audio, and only when I'm streaming audio, if I use my car's steering-mounted controls to initiate a phone call, it seems to sever the bluetooth connection with the phone. I have to manually re-connect the car to the phone (not re-pair, just re-connect). When I'm not streaming audio, using the steering wheel-mounted controls don't cause the sever to occur. I use both Pandora and iHeartRadio, and have seen the same problem in both apps. Using the iOS version of the same apps on my work-issued iPhone don't have the problem, so I don't think it is an problem inherent with my car, I think it is an issue with the Android installation. If switching to CM7.2 suffers this same problem as the official 2.3.4, it wouldn't be worth the effort to me to switch. But if it DOES fix the problem ... I might be more forgiving if everything in the above list doesn't work fully. I still suffer the same problem.
Thanks in advance!
Other things I've noticed:
Airplane Mode: I've noticed that trying to trigger Airplane Mode doesn't seem to work properly. When I attempt to trigger it, nothing appears to happen. If I then reboot the phone, I see the airplane icon in the status bar, data doesn't work (as one would expect when in Airplane Mode), but the Bluetooth icon is visible, as if Bluetooth were still turned on. Attempting to turn off Airplane Mode also requires a reboot.
Lock Screen: Initially, changing the settings for the lock screen worked just fine. Now, for some reason, the settings don't seem to "stick" ... I set them, but they have no effect. But, if I then reboot, the settings that I tried to set take effect. So they are being persisted somewhere, somehow ...Airplane Mode and Lock Screen: Originally I noticed the two above items. I just did a factory reset of the phone (Settings --> Privacy --> Factory data reset), and the problems went away. Airplane Mode seems to work properly, and the Lock Screen settings update as expected, just like when I first installed CM. I didn't do all that much previously, so I can't imagine what broke these the first time, but if I happen to recreate the problem and isolate the cause I'll mention it here.
ADW Launcher: When Cyanogenmod first booted up, I couldn't add, move, or remove anything from the default home screens by long-pressing. The haptic would trigger, so I know it was recognizing the presses. By going through the ADW settings and choosing simply to restart ADW, everything started working fine.
Lock Screen: I love the flexibility and customization it allows. At first though, I thought it wasn't showing the time/date of the next upcoming alarm. Then I realized that by disabling the "show next calendar event" feature, it would show up in the same place that the calendar event was otherwise appearing in.
It's fast!: The phone feels MUCH more responsive than when I was on stock.
Phone calls: Yes
3G Data: Yes
WiFi: Intermittent. I have to reboot every time you toggle, but not everyone has this issue.
GPS: Yes
Phone-over-Bluetooth: Yes
Stream Audio over Bluetooth: Never tried
Still Camera: Yes
Video Camera: Yes
Physical Keyboard: Every key except 'ALT LOCK'
Motorola Media Dock detection/integration: Never tried
Motorola Car Dock detection/integration: Never tried
SMS/MMS (I use Google Voice for most of my SMS needs, but for sake of completeness): Yes. I use both also

Does it do this with your standard music app while playing music off your SD card?
Your logic seems sound enough, but you assume Android is a perfect OS. It might just be the way Pandora and iHeartRadio are designed to handle that situation in the Android operating environment and it might just be a bug across 2.3.4. My suggestion to you would be to try these same exact things with a couple DIFFERENT Android phones (a friend's, the wife's, etc.) to see if that's just how it plays out within the Android OS. Worst case scenario, that's just a problem with the apps themselves and you write an email to them asking for an update with a solution.

Sadly, everyone that I know is an iPhone fanboy. I'm the only one with an Android-based phone!
I'm also aware that the ROM has baked-in support for Motorola's media and car docks, though I don't own one to tell you how well it works. I assume its the same code, just stolen from source, and I've NEVER seen anyone complaining about it on Gingerbread. Maybe head over to the Droid 2 Accessories part of the forum and see if there are any complaints.

Per your advice, I ran a couple of more tests, and found the following. In addition to severing the bluetooth connection when streaming audio from Pandora or iHeartRadio and using the steering wheel-mounted controls to initiate a phone call, the bluetooth connection also gets severed in the same manner when streaming sound from YouTube.
Interestingly, it does NOT sever the connection when streaming audio from the local media player or through Play Music when streaming over 3G. However, even in this circumstance, if I hit the steering wheel "Mode" button to switch to AM/FM, it severs the bluetooth connection. If I recall from past tests, this also would also sever Pandora/iHeartRadio, though I didn't repeat that this morning.
So ... it's not just Pandora or iHeartRadio, but some of Google's own software, though sometimes only when switching radio modes and not always when placing a call.
Is anyone out there running CM7.2 connected to a car and able to verify whether the same problems plague CM7.2 as stock 2.3.4?

it's not that difficult, just need a decent pc
download iso file (50mb),
mount image to cd, dvd, or usb drive
reboot pc to drive
run program, read onscreen instructions, takes about 10 mins or less
wipe cache, reboot
done your rooted
just know how to boot to bootloader and recovery, read http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/Welcome
written for d2G, but same steps
Stream Audio over Bluetooth: Yes, possible lag (music pausing/skipping for a split second ) entering menus/rotating screen/unlocking but maybe because I am using power amp or the kernel that I am using
Dock: There is a dock menu in settings that looks to be specific to this phone (as in I have not seen it on other cm7.2 phones) so it may work
Edit: FYI I had a fun (hard) time getting from stock (froyo) to CM7.2. I had to flash the stock (gingerbread) before I could get to 7.2 (Someone here provided me the file to flash which I may be able to dig up)
Well, I hooped myself crazy, am rooted and on 2.3.4 - and the CM7.2 install script still honks that I'm not on the right version.
Anyone else seen this one?
(I realize I'm a little late to the game - I just got a D2 off of craigslist...)

You may need to tweak the Cyanogenmod installer. See the following post for instructions on how to fix. Copying/pasting the instructions here for reference. This worked for me. I ran CM7.2 for quite a while, but eventually got rid of it due to my R2D2 having WiFi issues under CM7.2 (it would sometimes stop having internet connectivity over WiFi, and the only way to fix the issue was to reboot).

Look like you're failing the check_kernel script. This was put in place to prevent someone with a Froyo based kernel from flashing a CM version that required the Gingerbread kernel. If you open up the cm-7.2.0-droid2.zip file and look at /system/etc/check_kernel, you'll see that the required kernel version is 2.6.32.9-gca08d89, which matches my Droid2 exactly. I'm assuming your version does not match. That 2.3.4 update must have bumped the kernel version. This new kernel may or may not work with CM7.2.
Couple options I can think of. You could change the required version in the check_kernel script. Or you can blank out that entire file and replace it with:
#!/sbin/sh
exit 0
You could also edit the main update script found under /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script and delete this line:
assert(run_program("/tmp/check_kernel") == 0);
Just make any of those changes, repackage the zip file, and try flashing that. You could very well get stuck in a bootloop due to the new kernel being incompatible and you may have to SBF back to rooted 2.3.4 and live with that for now. Good luck!
based on that post from GregMoens

No Sound - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4

Tried searching the threads but didn't find anyone with the same problem. But for some reason sound stopped coming out of my phone. When I say sound, I mean if I try to play any music, use speakerphone, videos, alarms, keypad tones, etc. No sound will come out of my phone. I can make a call using the phone but when I try to use speakerphone nothing comes out. I can hear someone when I'm talking to them on the phone and they can hear me fine and earphones also work fine.
I tried Odin back to stock, then doing a factory reset and even with the factory reset I still don't hear anything when the AT&T logo plays when the phone is turned on.
Any ideas or suggestions? It was working fine this afternoon then for some reason all of a sudden stopped. I'm not sure if I placed my phone in my glove compartment too hard or if I did something else that maybe dislodged an internal cable or something.
Any help would be appreciated.
Looks like you may have a physical problem with the phone. The main speaker is dead somehow. That speaker does music, alert noises, etc, while a separate speaker does your in call audio (directly to your ear so the call is private..). This happened to me once on my iPhone4 where a tiny tiny tiny tab of glass cleaner got into the headset when I was cleaning it. it dried and sorted itself out within a day. If that's the case with yours try drying it out. If not, then you may have to submit it to Samsung or your carrier for warranty.

Thanks for the reply, WoodburyMan. I'm thinking my phone might be experiencing a "supernatural" problem. For one reason or another my alarm went off this morning and everything started to work fine. Although there were some syncing issues with my Gmail. Who knows, last night when all this happened, my battery was at 50%. Maybe it needed a charge or just a night to "sleep off" its issues. In any case, it seems to be working fine for the time being. Hopefully it stays that way.
i was having a similar problem and don't know what is going on. All my sounds work and for some reason when i silence my phone and try and turn the sound back on EVERY sound works EXCEPT for my Media. like notifications, bleeps , etc all work but i can't hear music at all and i can't unmute it. ive tried a whole bunch of stuff and did a reset and nothing yet. As soon as i restart the phone, then the media sound wrks again.. any ideas?

Ear speaker not Working in Galaxy S4.SOLUTION FINALLY FOUND
I hadthis problem for a lot of time...when i was on the phone with a call instantly the sound was off...the loud speaker and the headphones and bluetooth were ok but the ear speaker was off. Firstly i thought that the cause of the problem was the fact the i have rooted my phone...i change a lot of roms... and some times the ear speaker was starting to work but then the same think instantly went down...i unrooted my phone but the problem was still there.... I TRY also the function *#0*# and when i push the botton of the "reciever" some times was working some times not..... when i was playing on this one time i push hard on the screen and has start to work again,.... Then i thought that the time to open the device has come.... Some youtube help on how to disassebly a galaxy s4 and i found the connector for the ear speaker...... i cleaned it... i used the hair dryer and the a connector spray for mantainence and the problem was fixed....I have seen after 2 days reaserch on the net that many people with a galaxy s4 have this problem.... in my opinion is a matter of humidity in this connector.... after hairdrying and a connector spray my phone was fixed... No need to send it back to samsung ....and pay money..because its rooted..(my knox counter is still 0x1 ) .
That was all falks .. hope to help somebody... its very easy to fix this problem once you understand the cause of it!!!

Phone flashed fine to 4.3, then i had to change modem to USUAMDL. Used saferoot to root and regionlock away to unlock. Long story short after spending two days i was able to root and unlock the phone. I was happy and finally started restoring my data. But i suddenly noticed that there was no sound at all. Now the phone is on mk2 rom and i have no sound whatsoever. When i try to make a call, it hangs. When i try to play some music it says "sorry the player does not support this type of audio file"
I am very frustrated because i have been searching but couldnt find a solution. I cannot flash any other file e.g. mk2 to NB1 or any other MDL rom through odin. I used *#0*# to get to the hardware menu and tested speaker but it doesnt do anything. I still think its a software problem because phone is not able to make any calls either or play music files and hangs. I would greatly appreciate help.

Flash the modem back to a newer one. It is known that if you put an old NON-HLOS with the 4.4.2 bootloader that you lose sound.

Isn't the modem the same thing as the baseband? If so I have NC1 as my modem and can't find a newer one.
I have a similar problem with my speaker...
I've tried to replace phisical speaker and daughterboard... But still not work...
When in Android will played a sound (screen lock, music palying, dialing...) on the speaker come out only "tic"s... for the duration of sound... Then speaker will stop... Any ideas?

So here is my 2nd (and last as I am going to keep my Gear and sale the Z) rom for the smartq z watch.
Based on stock 2.1 rom
Rooted (thanks clockworkmod)
File manager deleted
sleeping analyzis deleted
Fx File manager and Fx root add on from Nextapp added
Flit keyboard from Locnet added
Quick keyboard switcher from Appaholics added
App Uninstaller added
AOSP Browser added
AOSP Calculator added
Gapps small package added (no gmail, no maps ... you can download those apps from playstore)
[HOW-TO]
1-Flash the watch with the restore tool from https://hotfile.com/dl/255788947/abfedd9/z1_restore_tool.zip.html (yes, i know, it will format the watch and you will loose everything... but it is needed)
2-Copy this http://www.multiupload.nl/TNB1INGIWU to the root of the /Sdcard of your watch and rename it as update.zip
3-Start the flash from the watch
4-After the boot you can delete the 2 chinese apps with App Uninstaller
[Remember]
if you apply an update (OTA or full update) you will loose root, gapps ....
[Issues/Advices]
The screen is so small that you can't see all the options of superuser when an app ask for root rights. So, you will have to go to Superuser and change setting to "allways answer yes" before installing and starting for the 1st time a new app which needs root, after what, off course, you can go back to superuser and change again settings
You can't apply my rom without flashing with the restore tool before ! Even if you are yet running my rom ! Sorry but i don't have time to change this ...
I suggest you to install Ultimate Dynamic Navbar from Playstore (better than PIE)

Problem
I followed your instruction to use the restore tool first, before installing your ROM.
Problems:
(1) No watch face widget
(2) UI becomes very very very sluggish
I repeated the procedure and the result was the same. I even went into recovery and wipe user data / cache / dalvik / system, and then use the restore tool again before installing your ROM again. Then above problem were still there.
Sorry it does not work for me.
Sorry my watch is yet on the package ready to be sale and shipped...
With gapps I think that this watch won't be a star... To much props and services to load.
For the watch face do you mean the watch when the watch wake up? It was there on mine.

Correct. I never see any watch face, there is only a blank screen when the watch boots up. You can still swipe sideways to see the widgets and app menu.

I had the same problem ..blank start screen. But I could only swipe right (bringing new screen in from left side).
So I tried redoing the whole procedure ...and now I think I bricked my watch ;-( It wont start or go into restore mode ..just keeps buzzing 4 times and then after a pause buzzes twice...then repeats
UPDATE: Managed to get the watch restored ..not sure what the exact procedure is but requires lots of patience trying the restore mode buttons over and over again while connected to the restore/burn tool.
Whats the original density I belive the clock widget problem has to do 140 dpi

Deadbeef ...I've had this a couple times now; in my case my watch goes into a buzzing pattern (4 buzzes pause 2 buzzes long pause ...then repeats over and over again). I think this is when its "on" ...and when its "off" then its obviously just blank/no buzzing at all.
I've managed to eventually get it back but just requires patience.
My best solution so far is ...
If its not buzzing (i.e. off) start the restore/burn tool so that its listening for the watch restore mode. Then plug in the watch.
And then keep doing the power+back buttons press for 8+ seconds. ie if the button sequence doesnt trigger the restore procedure then wait a few second and press both the buttons again.
Finaly got the custom 2.1 rom installed

Wasn't able to install a working usb boot driver for the watch, so the restore tool could not communicate with it.
Found an old laptop with Win XP and installed the Restore tool and the boot driver from it's subdirectory.
Watch was was found on the second try.
After restore to 1.5 I was able to copy and upgrade to this great custom Rom on my Win 7 64bit pc.
Thanx, for the ROM. It's great. Now the watch has a reason to stay.

Geek78, your work is very impressive. So cool to know people are working on the smartwatches too!
I have a general question for you because i don't know if anyone else would be able to answer. I personally am using the ZGPAX S5 and love it (http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/1467454256/The_newest_android_watch_phone_android.html) - However, i am trying to use widget locker or go locker to overried the desk clock from coming up when i wake the device... it's very hit and miss. I was wondering if you might know how to disable this in the deskclock apk package. I have rom toolbox on the watch and can freeze various parts of the app. I haven't been able to figure it out yet. Hell, i even renamed deskclock.apk to apk.bak in system/app and the dam thing still runs after clearing dalvik (did the same with stock launcher, running adw now). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. who knows maybe you will mess around with this watch one day... lol
Using this watch with wifi enabled kills the battery. This rom is great. Installed es file explorer and gmail. Wifi antenna is weak. Very low range. Wishing there was a way to connect over BT to my phone.

[QUOTE Wishing there was a way to connect over BT to my phone.
what do you mean for the pc connection you mean?
The wifi tranmitter on this watch has extremely limited range and eats up a lot of the battery. Using a BT connection over my phone (tethering) to acces the Internet.
Also installed Facebook without problems. Tried MX player. It works with both internal and mips drivers. Choppy but it works. Even streaming mp4 over Lan. But the player crashes after 30 sec.

Root/Unroot - is this possible?

Hi,
I have a note 4 SM-N910F (UK). I'm getting annoying skipping via bluetooth headphones whilst playing music. I've read that this can be remedied by editing build.prop.
I understand build.prop can't be edited and saved without rooting the phone and that rooting will trip knox, voiding the remainder of my warranty. I'd like to keep my warranty but won't lose much sleep if knox is tripped.
The reason I want to unroot the phone after rooting and editing build.prop is that Sky Go/Virgin TV Anywhere doesn't work with rooted phones. Problem is that flashing stock firmware, i think, will overwrite build.prop losing the changes i've made.
Any workaround for this anyone knows of?
Thanks
Go in the SuperSu app, scroll down till u find Full Unroot and do it.That will restart the phone and delete the SuperSu app and also your root access i'm not so sure about the build prop but u should try though !

Thank you I hope you don't mind but I'll wait a while for some more confirmations as to whether this will work OK with build.prop and Sky Go/TV Anywhere
I did read that you can edit and save build.prop with some wizardry mounting the phone in a custom recovery but although i've rooted phones in the past, it's not really something i'd know how to tackle without a guide.

FWIW I don't recognise your bluetooth skipping problems on my stock N910F. Is it possibly your headphones, rather than the phone? I use an old set of Motorola S9s, and also a MusicMate bluetooth speaker, and don't have any skipping problems.

Thanks Apparently it's a common issue and the BT headphones I use are fine as i don't get the problem with my other phone or BT streaming from Shield TV. Something to do with the way the CPU goes into sleep mode. If the screen is on, there's no skipping whatsoever so i'm working around it using Stay Alive to keep the screen on and and an app called Black Screen which dims the screen to an absolute minimum. The problem with this is that it drains the battery a fair bit quicker than screen being completely off.
I have no clue why yours works fine - fancy a swap?
Here's a thread with lots of owners of different phones having similar issues:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4/477341-note-4-bluetooth-skipping-audio.html
Hmmm... I have less experience of screen-off usage. Perhaps there could be a problem.

Also the skipping is intermittent. Sometimes i get a good few minutes problem free and other times it'll happen two or three times a minute. Also tried a load of different music player apps and it's not picky!!

I've got enough experience to know that I don't suffer the problem to that extent. Players I use are Amazon Prime Music, Spotify, and BubbleUPNP.
