[OFFICIAL] AOKP Bootanimation Contest - General AOKP Discussion

If you had been living under a rock, then get out of there and take a look here
http://aokp.co/blog/aokp-boot-animation-contest-read-this-right-now
I am not going to rewrite everything that is written there
The gist is :
AOKP wants you to submit a bootanimation for the contest. The last date is 7th February. First prize involves a Nexus device. For more details visit the above link.
For any queries/doubts/clarfications, please post below in the thread, and we'll try out best to help you out.
~ Championswimmer (Team Kang)

I'm just wondering, how is the best boot animation going to be decided? Maybe an open blog poll?

Not sure if it's planned or not, but it would be awesome if the entries were posted here so that we can check them out!

Counterproductive. AOKP clearly stated that entries for the contest shall be UNIQUE - posting these here will make people copy ideas. AOKP will draw the winner in a secret election, just participate and drink a tea.

Little update,
The last date is now Feb 7 (postponed by a day)
Non-USA participants are allowed (and if selected, we will try to get them that nexus definitely)
aaaanndd.. if you check back on the blog posts, vector format logo of aokp is uploaded, in case anyone of you wants it

can we send more than one entry ? or single entry with 2 or more projects?

Hi there. You can submit as many as you want. Just remember, it's quality over quantity. Look forward to yours and everyone else's submissions. ^^

If I were more artistic I would've had a unicorn dancing on a disco dance floor a la John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, sadly I'm not

Already started working on some sexy bootanimations here, but just had a few questions :
1- How am supposed to send a second bootanimations, just by submitting another entry with the same name & email ?!
2- what is that 'Haiku' field !? what does that mean ?

[No ROM here, just instructions] Porting CM6 from Hero

So, I just grabbed the Hero port from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722122. And then, I did the following -
1) loaded into dsixda's kitchen and selected 'Advanced' and 'port'
2) used freshly compiled AOSP ROM with freshly compiled kernel as base for device (using Android Builder - link in sig)
3) replaced 'heroc' with 'desirec' in updater-script & build.prop
4) changed several lines in build.prop to change 'Sprint' into 'Verizon' & 'Hero CDMA' into 'Eris'
5) renamed 'init.heroc.rc' in ramdisk to 'init.desirec.rc'
6) copied 'desirec-keypad.kcm.bin' & 'desirec-keypad.kl' from planejane into appropriate locations
7) copied 'sensors.desirec.so' from planejane to appropriate location
Seriously. That's all that I did.
What works:
wifi
camera (no preview)
bluetooth (well it turns on, I don't have anything to test)
Market (after the Google bits are installed)
phone calls
3G
touch screen
buttons
lights
SMS
What doesn't work:
MMS (couldn't send)
OC won't work because the kernel I used doesn't have it.
This is really nice for no more work than it takes to port. It kind of hurts me, because I like the idea of compiling from source so much better...
I don't want to step on any toes of people who are doing real work, since I don't plan on maintaining this ROM. (Well, I didn't really do much of anything anyway!) So, hence the instructions above. Roll your own, if you want.
nice work has anybody tried this yet? i can guinea pig if not.
Edit:
Nevermind

Hey, I just provided the instructions... If I were going to post the ROM, I would make sure it's ok with darchstar. That's just me though. Since it's all open source, it may not matter one way or another.
So, yeah, it's ok with me! I haven't sent my build to anyone yet, so if you ported it, well, you ported it!
Thanks for asking. That's the way to be.
I do have one request though... If you make any more changes, can you post them too? And not just - "v53 - fixed thingy". I really like to see what people are doing, so I can learn how they did it. That's purely a request. You are in no way obligated.

Cool deal then. The next thing that I was going to do was change the "Sprint" in res/xml/eri.xml in the framework-res.apk to say Verizon. I had no idea of where to do that until last night when it was mentioned in the irc channel by andrew8806 & conap.
This is really good build. I'm using it right now as my everyday ROM. It will be good for this to be an option for people. It's just not a part of my plan... Muhahaha.
Rock on.
very informative, thanks for editing the title accordingly. =) don't need anymore flames rising. And also thanks for making sure to add the ASK DARCHSTAR part in the OP beings that there was already almost a issue between him the heroc community and one of the eris forum members(you already know who) due to a mixup.
I'm feeling like an idiot but I can't find ramdisk to make the necessary changes, othwise great info as always.

If you are using dsixda's Kitchen, you can go to Advanced and then '15'. It will expand the boot.img out into a folder called BOOT-EXTRACTED, and there's a folder in there that is the contents of the ramdisk and the kernel. Be sure to build the boot.img back after making changes and before building the ROM.
This explains it -

Well done! Did you have to do anything that I did not list in the instructions in this thread? Share?
Honestly, it's real tempting to take yet another detour and make a plugin for the kitchen that will do the steps in the OP (CDMA Hero --> Eris) and maybe another one that's Eris --> CDMA Hero.
I don't think it will take much time to do, and it will make Hero ports even easier for people who don't have the time to dig into things as well as they probably should if they are going to be a dev. (There is a downside to making all of this easier to do...)

[Q] Daily ROM update

1st I want to say thanks to all the developers that are working on the roms
I feel we need a rom update page that lists al the roms and when they were last worked on. This would make life more easy when it comes to finding out about the latest roms and updates.
What do you guys think ?

Good in theory...but probably going to get more cluttered than the development forum, so we will just have to shuffle through pages to find updates. Unless you're volunteering to keep updating the 1st post
I agree with that. Or at least have the cooks include the date in the title they were last updated. Yes some if them do that, but not all of them.
Well I could give it a go.... see how it turns out. Do you think the cooks could drop me a PM when they make a update then I can add it ?
Are you talking just downloads and dates? There would probably be a hundred threads starting a day since there's not a post with full instructions. It would work well if you put the ROM and date w/ a link to the original thread.

Sorry but that seems pointless. If you really want to make this happen, you can always scour the forum for new builds daily. It's simple enough. There aren't daily updates for all the builds.

MIUI english porting project is no more.

I posted this in the N1 forum but realised it applies to several platforms, so for those not reading there...
The main English porting for MIUI is no more, the site (www.miui-dev.com) is gone.
All the details are from the @MiuiDev twitter feed:
http://twitter.com/#!/miuidev
MIUI itself is still in development as usual by the original Chinese devs, the English translation has hit a major speedbump (brick wall?) with this however.
So if anyone comes across the cretins responsible for kicking this project squarely in the cojones, please repay the favour!
This upsets me so much! I hope there's some way to make a comeback...
and it's actually http://twitter.com/#!/miuiandroid where the news is.
It says the forums will remain active. =(
EDIT: Read wrong Twitter first. Boooooo.
is all that can be said, really.
That twitter account hasn't been updated in two weeks, WTF are you talking about?
http://miui.us
Ignore me... didn't read the right twitter post..
Sent from my flux capacitor at 88 MPH.
This will be a great loss for the android rom flashing community. For me Miui had the most polished user interface and experience I had ever seen in any rom. I liked it so much that the availability of this rom was going to be a deciding factor for when I buy a new phone.
According to the latest twitter post Miui english translations might be saved by PaulOBrien of MoDaCo. I do hope the translations continue!
miui isn't going anywhere. There was some falling out so some things happened, that twitter doesnt tell the full story.

The .us doesnt mean United States despite its logo, its a placeholder, the site most of the dev's will be using. I've seen the upcoming forum and there's an Desire section.
Just give them sometime there working on getting it all setup.
Just checked, site is back up. No forum yet.

Not true. All port devices are now on www.miui.us.
You can find all devices there.
What exactly happend? The community split into half, Marhuk with some help from PaulOBrian continues with miuiandroid.com and now miui.us pops out.
What started the argument between the developers that made it necessary to break the community in two?

Indeed, the new miui.us site has just popped up, the developers and that have always worked on it (atleast most of them) are using miuiandroid.com, if you checked the old site they said they where moving, and for a while the old site redirected you to the new one, until the old domain was shut down i guess

[REF]Nexus S ICS 4.0.4 ROM Hierarchy

So, I had some free time and decided to make this kind of organizational chart containing the hierarchy of ROMs for our Nexus S. You can see in the chart which ROM is based on which.
You can take a look at it here..
If you think I made some mistakes with the chart, let me know and I'll fix them.
If the mods here think such kind of thread is a waste, I don't mind it being deleted.
Thanks.

kalim is cm9's voice on the nexus s.
Yeah, as far as I know, CM Team is divided into individuals to maintain separate devices.
In this case, KalimochoAz is the only one responsible for Nexus S.
It's stated that Steve Kondik (Cyanogen) himself is a maintainer for Nexus S as well.
But I don't think he has that much time to spent for development.

Well, at first I was thinking about that.
But when I opened the thread to make sure I didn't make mistake, I think DaXmax made some changes to his ROM.
Previously, on #1 and #2, the base ROM was kong's MIUI (I remembered this one).
But since #4, I see the base is official MIUI, as stated there.

DISCUSSION ABOUT FUTURE PORTS
Hi all, as many of you should already know, Android 5.0 source code has been dumped to AOSP so coding and porting is already possible... As I'm seeing almost nothing about Lollipop to our devices, let's have this place for general chatting and speculations about the future builds!
Personally, I have some questions...
1- Are you guys excited about it or is just me?
2- Who you guys think that will be our 'hero' and port to our devices fisrt?
3- [4 DEVS] Are you considering to make a port of it?
4- What should be the major trouble in this version? (drivers, CPU, GPU, RAM, etc)

I am very excited!!!
Came in here to see if there was a compile yet... We will see paranoid or cm first I'm wagering... Cm will be a few days off I'm guessing too. We have to wait for them to start most of these Roms.

Yes, I think CM will be releasing something on the start of december...
I already see some ports to Nexus devices (including 7 2012&2013), maybe someone who knows coding may port it for us as a preview or a test build, the same way that somebody tried with MIUI from Nexus 7 2013 \o/
A dev could attempt a vanilla asop build.
But I am not a dev

My friend actually thought me how to build from source, so I am going to try to build android l rom for tab 2 7" but i kind of forgot how, but i will let you guys know how it goes!
Heck yeah. CM said they'll start releasing nightlies in December
I am very very exited for lollipop for tab 2 :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory::victory:
But any genius dev who could make it
What if all the devs unite to make it
And I think a new recovery will be needed for it?
And I am just a 15 year old

Count with me as a tester! haha lol
If you need someone to test, count with me too! Heh
And yup, I'm really excited! I guess CM or PA will be the first ones to release the ROMS for our Tabs. My only worry is about the CPU (kind of outdated).
Our hero could be:
@tuxafgmur he is (I think) the best developer for P51XX
I believe on @Android-Andi too, he's the guy for the whole Tab 2 community!

I continue to be amazed at the amount of work people do and freely give away.. then the howls from some when they move on to other projects. your efforts are greatly appreciated and fully understand the need to step back and review what life is sending your way

And then he replied
Maybe not. IDK yet if i am able to maintain all the stuff i did on KitKat - life changes.
Then an idiot posted this
Yes Android-Andi you can do it. You are one of the best developers I have ever seen as you know other devs don't help users on other issues as you do. You make apps and kernels and other stuff that make people happy and inspired. You have the knowledge, the skills and the power to make a revolution in custom rom series that will the headlines of all major tech news forums and website - ''UPGRADE ANCIENT TAB 2 TO LOLLIPOP! ''.And this will make you very very famous. So famous that many people will donate to you for making roms that you will be so rich that you can buy a institute for teaching people on how to develop roms. I know you don't do it for money. I know you do it for respect and happiness that is the main motive of human life. Yes you can You can do it Andi we are with you. We the XDA members that when united can make a fully functioning iron man suit! So let's do it.

Then Andi posted
Sure, i like to see that there are many user likeing my work and are thanksfull all the time.
I got a lot of sleepless nights in the past view month and can not manage that much work anymore.
If i like to work on L i do - if i don't like, i won't.
if people ask for ETAs all the time, then i try to compile for myself only and do not share anything! Maybe.a screenshot, but thats it.
Also please all together, stop writeing PM's asking for L!
And then I think we were going to get L but.......................... Dark_Cristian posted

I am out guys, some never learn it.
So anyone who knows what happened?
@shsagnik, just headed to the thread and saw what happened. Well, some people really don't learn.
I just hope we didn't lost one of the biggest Tab 2 helpers around. And as he said, if he likes it, he will do it.
There's no sense on making pressure on him, it won't change nothing.

Really sorry about what happened, hope he come back and all of those stupid guys learn something...
Also, OFFICIAL NEWS ABOUT CYANOGENMOD 12: They said that initial works should be seen in the first days of next month or even in the ending of this month. Note: official nightlies only for devices with official device maintainers (don't know if Tab 2 still have one) :good::good::good:

There's also another developer which left. It's Varun, the guy who built AOSP 5.0 for Xperia L. Lots of questions on the development thread made him leave. Oh well, hope he comes back.
Afaik, we have no active maintainer. Codeworkx used to be our maintainer, but he left. Just sent an email to CyanogenMod about this.
