Moto G vs Nexus 5 - Moto G General

Hi all, just thought I'd throw this one out here for you all to read. I have a Nexus 5, my wife bought me a Moto G for Xmas which I was going to use as a back up phone as I thought it would never be as good as my N5.
However, after having played with it for a bit and being thoroughly impressed, I went back to my N5, but I couldn't help but feel it was a bit too big, and that the screen looked too yellow, and that it just didn't feel so good to hold.
Now, don't get me wrong, the N5 is a firecracker of a device, it's blazingly quick, has every conceivable bit of hardware you could want, and performs reliably, but there is just an appeal to the Moto G that I can't quite put my finger on, that keeps dragging me back to it in favour of the N5.
I think, that every so often, someone comes up with a device that somehow just appeals in such a way that gets everyone talking about it, and this is one of those devices. Mainly due to the price, but for me, it's more about the timely updates and the fact that it just works, and well. It's not too big or too small. It doesn't feel cheap nor is it ostentatious. It's just right, and it has a battery that lasts all day, and as of yet, has never missed a beat. Motorola are going to sell shedloads of these things, and I for one will be watching closely to see what they bring out next..
Roll on Kitkat!

The N5 its a great device but i have to say that im WAY more impressed with the moto G than what i was with the N5...
Its justo an amazing phone with an amazing performance, not to mention its build quality feels a lot better than what other companies have in phones with 3 times the price (Samsung)
Its feels... Good

Yes, I think it boils down to expectations a lot. Although the N5 can be considered cheap for its spec, it's no where near as good value as the Moto G is
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk

Sounds like you should just sell both of them and get a Moto X lol.

I would if I could buy one, not everybody lives in the states you know!
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk

My Moto G get more use than my Note 3 does atm, I originally bought it as a backup & a works phone, but i finding myself taking it everywhere and leaving the Note 3 at home.
Tbh i think this is the best phone Motorola ever released in the UK at least.... No Moto X atm, and can't wait for it to get Kitkat sometime this month & it will get before the Note 3 see it aswell.

I had both and ended up returning the nexus 5 after I made up my mind that I wanted a cheap phone that just works. Moto G does that and more. It can honestly be the best midrange device if they sold it as such.
Sent from my XT1034 using Tapatalk

I still have my Nexus 5, although I may sell it at a later date and grab a 16gb Moto G. If I'd have known she was getting me one I'd have been cheeky and asked for a 16gb one.

I agree, the Moto G is really an amazing phone. First, I wanted to buy a Nexus 5 then I discovered the Moto G and bought it because of the really attractive price. And it's just perfect. The screen is great, the build quality is near perfect and the size of the device is perfect. I really enjoy my Moto G and I paid it only 139€ for the 16Gb/Go model.

True i paid £74 for mine try getting any other Android device with these kind of specs for that price is impossible.
Samsung, Sony, HTC & LG won't ever offer anything as good as the Moto G as they fear it cut into the sales of their top end smartphones, so they purposely dumb down the specs on their low to midrange phones.

To me anyway.... I find the N5 like a Dodge viper.... Fast and powerful, but not too refined.... Not compared to the luxury car makers anyway.

Lucky Git lol!
Mine was from phones4u, although factory unlocked. So I don't mind paying a bit extra. I use it on 3 with all you can eat data, and even without dc-hspa capability I can still get around 10-14mb/s DL speed on it. The N5 however will reach about 23mb/s, but, in all honesty, the Moto is more than fast enough for most cases.

Well, the radio supports hspa+ which is theoretically capable of a maximum of 21Mb/s, so it should be capable of more under ideal conditions. Network traffic is most likely your problem being in London.

Worth buying the phone?

Hey
Here in Sweden, the nexus 4 costs around 650 U.S. dollars. I can't get it cheaper from here. The question is, is the phone worth buying for 650 dollars? I really love the phone, but the phone's battery/camera maybe doesn't match the price?
Thx
I bought mine off of eBay for $540 tho, but I sold my s2 for $430.
What phone you currently own?
I bought mine fort 522 (€395) dollars in Germany. It is a great iPhone that will need a charge at night though. It is superfast, camera is good but nog terrific. Bur overall it is worth the money imo. Smooth, fast and first tot get updates and off course no bloatware.

YOLO.
@OP: its your money. spend it the way you want. coming to this forum, most of the people will say yes because we're biased, id even say it myself personally because I prefer nexus devices over anything else.
read reviews, watch videos, read forum posts and judge for yourself. good luck.
Yeah, it's same here at Finland. Lowest I can find it is over $660 USD (€500), but usually from trusted shops, it's more like $740 USD (€560).
I hope that UK/Germany-based web stores can get it soon to stock, I'm not going to pay over €450 for it, it's not worth it if you ask me..
If someone could recommend good shops from European union, I'd be glad to hear them

Read a review. I'm not here to advertise a phone whether you should buy it or not or say things so you walk away from buying a N4. It's up to you.
Most people here will beg you to buy it, but I'm a honest person. If you want the phone, just buy it.

I'll get a Note II or HTC One X+ if it costs around the same. While Nexus 4 is a great device, the most compelling reason (for me, at least) to buy it is the $350 price point from Play Store. At $650 there are many other options that you can consider, and the Nexus 4 only make sense if you really really want stock and want to get the next Android version the day it is available.
Thanks everyone for the replies, i think im going to buy it.

Well, I'd like to have the best smartphone there is. HTC One X+ is great, but Nexus 4 is better, it has 1GB more RAM etc.
Nexus 4 happens to be the best phone on market at the moment, which is fairly well available. Xiaomi Mi-2 isn't available, I would buy it if it was.
That's why I've decided to buy N4, but I have no idea where to get it, without paying something like $650 dollars, which isn't fair price.

I beg to differ. It's one of the highest spec phones out there and has proper Google support. It is a Nexus device and will be supported longer than most of other Android devices, it also gets updates directly from Google quickly as well as getting good developer support (less buggy ROM day one).
Galaxy Note's S Pen is also closed source and can't be used on AOSP I believe as it is attached to TouchWiz. I can be wrong on this.
Hell yea get this phone...do what you have to do and get it lol....buy it...trade for it...just make it happen lol...best phone out!!!!!!

Seems to be even more entry level than the Moto G. They quote the price for the dual SIM + TV as R$599,00 - I'd expect it to retail for something like $119,00 / £89,00 / €129,00 SIM-free, unlocked.
Why would a more entry level phone cost more?

It also looks like a Moto G LTE version is going to be released in the coming months as well. I would imagine the next version of the Moto G will have LTE as a standard feature. The costs of including multiple bands for LTE is coming down so it only makes sense.

I might get the LTE Moto G since the screen on my current G is cracked/scratched at the upper right. It's barely noticeable, but it's noticeable enough to annoy me. Quite a few people like my phone and it isn't available here (I don't think Digicel plans on carrying this phone and it's expensive as hell to import) so I can most likely sell it for some good cash once I get the LTE version.
I am so buying it just for the lte features xD

I've bought one today for my dad. However I read someone mention on gsm arena that this Moto G is going to be rubbish compared to previous versions, because its made by Lenovo and not Google. Is this something to be concerned about or just a random opinion from a Google fan?
That makes no sense.
As far as I understand, Lenovo just bought Motorola to get access to the NA/EU phone market.
Why would it mess with the internal workings of a company that's been around longer than Lenovo's parent company???
Manufacturing shouldn't change from when it was owned by Google, who bought it for patent and manufacturing reasons.
I'm a little surprised there isn't more talk about the device on here. I'm currently on the iPhone 6 Plus but want to get myself the Moto G to play with and use as a back up.

Firstly I wasn't talking about IBM. IBM sold Lenovo it's PC unit and IBM now focuses on services for the backbone/back office of the internet and intranets.
Back on topic -
Motorola for the second time has released a new phone that was GSM only first and then re-release with a few updated and adds an LTE radio.
The 2nd gen LTE Moto G was too expensive for a terrible camera. My Radiant has a bad enough camera but I used it for work anyway and still got decent pictures.
I opted to fix my Optimus G which I dropped on the screen side and it shattered = $155; as I was having space issues despite installing Link2SD on my Radiant.
This was back in May, I couldn't afford to wait for Motorola to announce an updated 3rd gen Moto G with the LTE radio.
Now I am dealing with a screen that has a mind of it's own. I can no longer make or take calls as the screen goes dark completely and I have no access to the dial or other phone controls. I used to get around this by connecting it to my BT headphones but that stopped working. The only way it works with the screen on now is -
1) Connected to the BT in my Panasonic Link2Cell cordless
2) My Car's BT (factory)
That's just the tip of the problems I have now. Otherwise the phone works fine.
I will keep it around for it's camera and video capabilities.
Now the decision is -
1) Moto G for $180 but it's skimpy on RAM and internal memory
2) Moto G for $219 but it's hardly better than the Asus Zenphone 2
I am leaning towards the Zenphone 2 actually because it seems to work well in low light. As I said I use my phone for work and while store lights are overall fine, the light isn't bright like a sunshine or controlled lighting under more ideal conditions.
Actually I should get a phone with optical stabilization since I don't have the calmest hands in the world and it sometimes takes two or three shots for get a sharp picture.
The One Plus Two has that, but not the Moto X? Hmmm... Not sure I want to shell out $400 for a phone though, I have other pressing priorities.
the MOTO is one thing I'd like to try.. Never own one and based on several reviews, they're looking good. I'm leaning for the cheaper one. I think it's aint a bad idea after all

I just came from Moto G 2014. Was using Titan Prime Rom + Greenify donation + Custom kernel + Xposed + Amplify + Tasker. The phone sucked on stock but I made it a beast for the last few months. However, I couldn't resist the camera, battery and ram upgrade and traded in my 2014 and got the G 2015 and I have used it only for a day but I can tell without a doubt, I find it smoother than my G 2014 (the tweaked one). Everything runs the way it is supposed to and I've about 40 odd apps installed and it still runs without any lag or jitters and the battery life is good. Been using it from noon today (it is 10.45p.m. here), battery is down to 56% and 3 hours 10 mins of SOT and out of this 1.5hrs I downloaded 40 apps on a very slow WiFi. So yeah, very happy with the phone as of now.

If you are not willing to shell out $500 (or more) for a phone, then you shouldn't expect to get a great camera with OIS. At least not now. In a few months the S6 will come down in price.

Not denying that, I just didn't want a worse camera than my current phone.
It won't come down that much, an LG G3 is now $399 unlocked (AT&T) and the G2 is about $280.

Some questions before I order?

I am very excited to order a new Moto G4 Plus, it will be a replacement for my One Plus X which was stolen about 6 weeks ago.
Amazon UK have the following listing:
Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB Dual SIM-Free Smartphone - White - Exclusive to Amazon for £199 (€221/$248)
The Dual SIM would be useful for my work number, but not at the price of a white phone!
Am I correct the Moto G4 Plus cannot be bought for that price dual SIM in black?
If so would it be possible and cost effective to order that white dual SIM model and a black front and back bezel?
Otherwise I was thinking of ordering this model:
Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB SIM-Free Smartphone - Black (Single SIM) - (Exclusive to Amazon) for £199
Unless there are issues with heat or performance with that model and I should consider a 3GB RAM model instead? I have a 128GB Sandisk MicroSD card so I thought I could get by with 16GB of on board memory...

This may not be relevant considering the reasons you're upgrading from OPX, but given my few days experience with OPX you'd miss its fantastic OLED display on MOTO G. At the cost of sounding discouraging, being a current Moto G4 plus user I'd recommend considering another phone for your intended purpose of upgrading. This is based on my two month rigorous use and finding far too many issues with Moto G4 plus for its hype. For one, unless you aren't fond of dedicating a few hours each day flashing ROMs and tweaking settings or installing mods, heating-up and ghost touch issues, apart from Moto G's build and design are not easy to accept for the price you pay for this fourth moto G iteration which is far from its predecessors' in terms of quality and performance.
As for the memory, going from 16 to 32 gig is surely worthwhile though only if there weren't other 32Gig phones out there offering better performance at prolly more competent prices.
Sorry if I sound sore, but couldn't help being honest with what I've learned from buying this phone.

Oh, I had thought the heat issues were resolved!
I actually ordered a few days go, Motorola's website told me so, but then sent me an email saying it was cancelled. I queried this with support and they told me it was because my bank declined the transfer, but I spoke with my bank and they said Motorola never tried to take the money!
I just ordered again about an hour ago...
What phone would you recommend instead? I was pretty set on the Moto G4 Plus
Why don't get a Note 7 instead.

I don't have a G4 Plus but I do have a G4 XT1625. It blows my previous Moto G2 out of the water in performance, battery life and reliability. No major issues at all on stock or with the custom ROM I now use. I have been using it for about two months and couldn't be happier with it.

And why not shoot yourself in the foot at the same time? Do you not read the news? The Note 7 has had more issues than any phone in the history of smartphones. Samsung has lost over $2 billion due to Note 7 issues and recalls. Even the replacements for the original recalls have been pulled off the market. Avoid the Note 7 like the plague.

Okay, I missed that. But he was asking for serious advice so I guess I didn't expect it. Just sayin'.

That was the laughing smiley for.
Okay, so it seems most would recommend their Moto G4 Plus.
Another 'Moto-maker' order cancelled by Motorola UK. After speaking with 3 technical support agents through their web based Live Chat, and being unable to get a clear answer from either one of them, I phoned and spoke with someone whose first language was actually English, and they explained the orders were cancelled because I was using a redirection service.
As I am in the Republic of Ireland I cannot order directly from Motorola UK, instead I tried using the same forwarder I always use for this kind of thing, but it is blacklsited by Motorola UK. Not sure what to do now, I really want a black dual SIM 32GB G4 Plus, but I do not want to pay Amazon an extra £39 for the privilege! It would be a real shame if I had to instead opt for the black single sim 16GB model from Amazon.
I am not sure what to do now, perhaps see if any family have friends in the UK that would manually forward it.
Sorry about that, I wasn't aware you'd already ordered for one, could have toned down the bad stuff I've had to say.
I guess, having shopped around a bit, doesn't look like there's much to choose from if I were to get a different phone, besides to be more honest my budget won't allow an upgrade just as yet. So guess I'll live with it for now and while my time away installing and uninstalling programs to squeeze out whatever good I can from my Moto G4 Plus.
And yes, majority moto g4 owners do seem to be swearing by their phones, that should ideally suffice to join their lot, besides making it worth buying considering there's going to be no dearth of dedicated forums and communities and such.

FWIW, there are things I'd like to see like NFC, a magnetic compass and water repellent like the G3 but all in all it's a pretty solid phone for the price. Oh yea, it doesn't have the built-in heater like some Samsung phones but I can live without that.

Best phone for +-300

My little cousin is looking for something in the range of 300, I'm pushing them toward swappa and telling him to research some things that he has enough money for but can you guys find something you would recommend for that price range? I'm leaning towards a Nexus 6 because I loved that phone. He brought up HTC m9

I would be really wary of buying a used Nexus 6P. There were obviously quality control issues with this phone. Too many people with boot loop and battery issues who need to RMA. Without a warranty you could end up with a paperweight.

Moto G4 Plus looks really good for a $279 price tag. The one major drawback is no NFC. But he can get a brand new phone with decent specs and a warranty.

I had a g4 plus (moto) before i bought a nexus 6p. All i can say is it is one kf the best phones that i used.
No issues at all. Running great up to now.
go for moto x pure edition 64 gb with great dual speaker at $260 best buy on sale
Depends what carrier you're on.
The Google Phones get updates faster than the moto phones of course. I would recommend the Moto Phones if he either a) knows how to unlock bootloader and flash custom roms, or b) doesn't care about stock updates. Moto is generally notorious for lack of updates.
If you're on GSM, could always get a OnePlus device.

Nexus 6p is great and in many peoples opinions one of the best phones currently out. It is very customisable and easy to use with good battery. Also if your cousin is into nodding then this is one of the best phones for stuff like custom roms etc. I would highly recommend this phone because last I checked it was around 300. I bought mine from the google store almost a year ago for 300-320. Can't remember exactly. Good luck searching.
