I need a new idea?! - Java for Android App Development

Hi to all, please i need an idea for an app to develop? i don't need a brilliant or complicated idea! just a simple one to be achieved by us (me and my friend), our goal is to bring a working android app to life.

I have an idea:
Make a app which has more demand but less competition in Google Play
Like Education base or Virtual Reality app

Examples of an Education base app:
app which has collection of maths & physics formula so that students:fingers-crossed: don't need textbook to Remind/view formlua....etc
Example of Virtual Reality app:
awesome 3D HD Role playing game where user can feel himself in game world like GTA, may payne game.
TIP: Game must be made for Tablets/Phablet with OpenGL3.0 to get most awesome graphics

Thanks for your help. I like the first idea, it's very interesting but the second is far beyond my capability (to buitd an entirely 3D engine!! it's scary.)
Like i said i'm a just helpless newbie. Any other ideas? i appreciate your help.

I would recommend that you first start off with some really simple programs like a Calculator etc.
Once an app gets developed and works properly; your confidence is bound to increase; helping you make better programs!

You could create a vault for the android phone. The vault can then store all types of files like images, text documents, videos and its back end as the sd card. The data in the sd card should be encrypted.
To open the vault you could put up 3 levels of security, like first a 4 digit code, then a pattern, then a question. So that the vault remains safe

A vault is like a safe, or a locker, where you store your things safely.
Create a safe, locker or a vault for your data. To keep your data safe in a lock

A little suggestion:angel:
make this app compatible with budget Tablets
because in india, i dont think college/parents are so rich to give hi-end tablets to their kids:laugh:
& also create separate version for tablets/phablets as screen size is large so UI must be eye catchy
at the end of aptitude add "share" icon/button so that result can be shared on fb or something else(optional)
& try to Save result in PDF file or HTML file so that user can see result on any device any time
:good: Hit thanks if i help you:angel:

Nice suggestions, I had made the layout catchy but sync with git ruined everything...Also I was not able to set it up for every device size...
Rest for tablets I have to use Fragments...Lets see whenever I would get time,
Sharing on fb seems to be good suggestion would try to include that in future updates.
Creating a pdf, html , dont think its a constructive one as no one would be interested to check his/her score out of the app.

New Idea
Build an app that can send text to pc over wifi or any wireless medium & also vice versa...

Graphics Designer Needed. Any amount of experience welcome!

Hello! Thanks for stopping by! I'm making an app with a friend of mine and we both are terrible at making graphics (we both code). The game is a simple dice game yet what sets it apart from other dice games is online play and a level of polish above the rest. Our code is pretty polished, even in its humble beginnings, so we are looking for a graphics designer who is willing to help show to users a polished interface.
We don't care how much experience you have as long as you're willing to learn (we can't teach you though obviously). The only thing we ask for is that you give at least 3 hours a week to the project. I believe that is not a lot to ask for. We are doing this project as a hobby and we hope to add another member (or two) to our team. Once again thank's for your time.
If you would like to know more about the app please post in the thread so other people can benefit from the information and if you have more personal questions feel free to PM me.
I'm actually interested. if it's not too time consuming I will gladly give it a try.
you can take a look at my deviant art profile to see what graphic works i normally do
http://aoisora9x.deviantart.com/
send me an email @ [email protected] if you want to contact me.
i do lots of traditional paper and pen design then move it over to digital paint.
let me know if you need some help and what your ideas and i'll toss up a few test designs you can look over.
i do very little in terms of actual 3d renders and modeling.

not hijacking, but it'd be really cool to see resources designers kicking around here make. which could then be used in projects by devs. just putting something out there will encourage others to use it. ie. icons and so on.

The only problem with that is that some people don't like other people to use their work. It's the same thing with code (i.e. open source or not). In any case it would be better to submit work you would like to share on Open Clip Art instead of a thread that would be hard to upkeep and search through.

The time it will take depends on you're proficiency with creating buttons backgrounds and stuff like that. Right now I have three people that want to work on this and I always had in mind to have different themes for this app. I'm going to ask Aoi_sora9x if he won't mind other people making other different themes. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

i thoroughly disagree! so if a designer didn't want to share, they're not forced to post whatever they've made on here. and as xda is a large community, you never know who could be reading about your work. maybe a new forum would be best.
I think the main reason is that XDA is a developer forum and not a designer forum?
artists and designers mostly will post on art forums, like how developers will only share stuffs on developer forums. When i wanna share a new icon set, XDA is not the first place i would think of. :/

Genre would be a good place to start, and you could include the market rating

I'm actually working on genre, developer and rating right now, as well as a couple more things such as direct market links to any given game of question and I'm making a custom account I can use to host images so that I won't have to worry about someone else's hosting database too... I may keep or scrap the idea for images since that could turn cumbersome. I'll see how things pan out.
What's here now was just a very basic list to get things started. Keep suggestions coming though, I'm always looking for help - especially on gathering all the market ratings!
Superb thread! I was going to start one but never got around to it!
Are you adding images and links too all the games on the list?

Yep, workin' on it. It's taking time because I'm hunting and hosting all the images myself, copying all the recent ratings, seeing which has free versions/doesn't, and finding all hi-quality pictures to scale down to a 640 width rule for the sake of aesthetics and bandwidth-efficiency. Soon enough, they will all have ratings, links, pictures... and if I don't work myself to death, some will get videos too!
I can almost guarantee it won't be finished tonight. Girlfriend's already hinting that she wants to spend some time tonight and I got a meeting early the morning after. I'll update as much as I can today and keep piecing it together... all in due time, it'll come together into something beautiful

When moving apps to the SD card,I noticed the app(game in this case,Aspalt 6) runs slower than usual.
I'm using Titanium Backup,is ADB the same thing?

I doubt you will notice any diffrence even a class 1 SD Card has a 500mb/s+ read speed, plus lower class cards have higher random access latencies
Ah hell... already hit a roadblock... I can only have 60 images per post.
I can cut out the picture ratings, but either way I slice it I'll only be able to add pictures of half the library unless I kill this topic, start all over and give at least one page worth of posts just to accommodate growth of the game library :\
I'm probably gonna end up killing this topic and doing it over... the right way.

We have a few apps that we developed for local daily deals in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada.
I understand that for our website equivalent, a big part of SEO is making sure our targeted keywords are on-page and the content matches the keywords. However for apps, since there's no on-page SEO, how do we get our app to be shown in results for targeted keywords?
The main difference I see is that Google has a web crawler to go through my website and evaluate the content, index it correctly etc. For our apps, I don't imagine Google has an app crawler that will go through the apps and do the same?
Also are there any strategies that are relatively easy and cost-free to do that pertain specifically to SEO for apps?

Judging by some of my searches on the Play Store, I think it has to do with your app name and the stuff in the description. My developer name is Acela Apps and when I search for it I get train apps because their description say they have the schedule for the Acela Amtrak train. This is why you should include as much about your app as you can in the description.

Yeah that's what I noticed as well. Pretty much the only place that matters to put relevant targeted keywords is in the app title, or google play description itself. Since there's no Google crawler to judge the content of the app, I think this is where the Google Play user reviews matter a lot.
Not too long ago Google allowed you to make anonymous reviews and what not, and scammers would just boost their own app ratings by making fake accounts, or even rating apps using emulators. Recently seeing that the app rating and reviews affect user's download rates so much, Google's made it so the reviews & ratings are user accountable. I think you have to use your Google(+) account now to make a review, and it posts your profile pic along with it.

Your great app is not selling. Sounds familiar?

Hi guys,
Making an app successful requires two distinct skill sets including:
1. product development: UI/UX, Graphics, clean code and all that stuff
2. marketing: Tricky business. How do you monteize? Work with Carriers? Pre-load your app? Promote it through blogs? Get good reviews? Create a hype in social media? Paid vs. Free? What kind of in-app purchases? Which ad network and what marketing partners to use etc. etc.?
I have seen many apps on app store that have the ability to be sell like hot cakes but they get dumped under the piles of bad apps which are being marketed properly.
If you guys think that you have an app that have the nice concept, good design and ability to be successful, but it is lacking marketing muscle, please send me a message. I will analyze your app and provide you free advise on what is it lacking. If I find that I can help you making it successful, I will let you know and we can discuss these details more once the key issues are identified.

Omer

This is a big pain point for app developers everywhere, both during UI and feature design as well as marketing the app. A solution would be to A/B your app features, both for development and for marketing your features. Mobile A/B solutions tend to be cumbersome and code-intensive. But, WYSIWYG tools are also making their appearance (Appiterate, Useartisan)

You are right, but
i observe that in search list google shows the result in below way.
1. first shows the app for which they have got advertisement money,
2. then the app those revenues are high as 30% goes to google.
3. then the most downloaded- reviewd, rate apps
4. then there algorithem goes for rest all...
Again this is my observation and i have not considered google algoritham at all on this.

[Q] Best Step by Step tutorial for app development

Hey guys! I'm new to app development world, I have a good amount of knowledge of c/c++ and learning java right now (I'm an engineering student), and totally interested in making my own app for android, I have made some basic apps, but it would be a real help if I get a good tutorial for bigger apps and also a tutorial for 2-D gaming on this platform for now....thanks in advanced!
I just recommend you to visit http://d.android.com/training it'll introduce you in all the basics and advanced techniques.
Not this buddy....I want a bit simpler tutorial....that one is too vast, I want a tutorial that specifically teaches for one particular type of app, example: making a 2-D game, or building a browser, or a messaging app, etc.

I think those topics are a collection of hundreds of patterns, knowledge, implementation and understanding, so better to start simple rather than ....well.... as the saying goes...learn to walk first before you try and pilot a space shuttle
Just a suggestion
Note : there maybe dvd sets that show what you ask, but I would suspect it would be months if not years of learning for a nice grounding in what you will need.

Sorry was speed reading to just try and offer help... as I said there are lots of resources, but for something like a game, you have mass resources based on the tech/engine you choose (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17163446/what-is-the-best-2d-game-engine-for-android)... if you choose one of the popular ones there are tonnes of resource. As for building an app, it's just a little ambiguous. A screen that displays a black view fullscreen is an app. I think it's best to evaluate the market see whats missing or can be improved upon and start that way.
BTW I was confused on you saying you wanted simpler than d.android.com/training (which is like the starting point from zero) But I think I get what your asking now
That helps a lot thanks!
