Xperia z viewing angles fixed - Xperia Z General

Hey guys, for months now since i got my beloved xp z a thing that bothered me somewhat were that when it was flat on the table i had trouble seeing my work mails unless the phone was realy close to me, as normally refered as the viewing angles.
Since then ive been reading and experimenting with a lot of apps to tweak the contrast and backlight intensity but well everything basically sucked and didnt work as advertized in the options.
Disapointed but not beaten, i recently tried an app that actualy works realy well to my amazement.
First of all, its a screen filter that decreases the intensity of the whites, but it seems to work a little diferently from all the other milion apps that swear to do the same.
It requires some number tweaking and ive settled for 60% filter in the app, then increased the phone brightness to 65%, just tweak it to your preference.
App store: screen filter by haxor industry
It has a substancial effect on the angles and heck i think i even find the colors better...
Cheers

cos of TFT nature that produce white a little more compare to other I've using "Smart SCREEN PRO" . it has more setting such as multicolored filter, can dim navigation bar and etc.

Definitely looks nicer. blacker blacks. Thank you very much.

Thanks for sharing sir...Im gonna try this one and hopes to get the one i wanted with my Z

Really you are struggling with viewing angles? I'm so happy with my X Z, I really don't know why people are arguing about viewing angles.

It troubles me at work yes. My desk is always full and my phone needs to be in weird angles while i have mails with open documents.
The majors problem is that most scanned documents are in white background and xperia z loses a lot of contrast in wider viewing angles.
With this app tough i get a little better readability on documents in weird angles.

Great, this app really works

I noticed big.differences in screens in different phones. My dad has an older Z and his screen looks washed out when mine's on par with screens like HTC one and S4 in terms of viewing angles. My phone is about 2 months old and my dad's is half a year old.

This difference you've noticed, are the two Zs using the same firmware?

I have noticed some improved deep black when using following setup in White Balance App.
Just try it and see
I'm using UK Generic 4.3 firmware

Really? I came from Samsung Galaxy S 1/2/3 to Xperia Z and I'm so dissapointed I can't even tell you. This is by far,. the worst screen & colors I have seen in a while.
Any screen/angling/coloring improvement on Xperia Z is a must.

Check your screen types. Depending on where your unit was built, it can have a different display LCD.
Find out here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2182432

I do believe those smartphones with screens that has very wide viewing angles are for people who use their phones sideways, and those who like showing their texts and emails to strangers sitting/standing beside them.

The viewing angles can never be fixed due to the tn-display.
Compared to my n5 with excellent viewing angles and a very good black level the Z display has no chance, but honestly i don't care that much,
Z is still a solid phone.

Display colors are not vibrant

I have installed SBF 1.5.2 right after I got my Atrix so I don't know if it is related to that but in my opinion the colors of the display are not vibrant / colorful compared to my HTC Desire Z (Vision/G2) and that phone has no AMOLED.
Compared to the HTC the colors all look a little bit greyer and I don't like it.
Is it possible to change that or am I the only one?
Thanks in advance.
You're comparing two different screen types. The Atrix uses TFT pentile and the Desire Z uses S-LCD. The Atrix is already known for some washed out colors like yellow.
Ah, thanks.
So it is not possible to change that with a software update like Google did in Android 2.3.3!?
I agree that the display is "not as nice" as other phones. My captivate IMO looks better.
yes the captivate is brighter but it also hurts my eyes after staring at it for a while. i wonder if there is going to be a program like galaxy tuner for the atrix. with galaxy tuner you can adjust the yellow color of the screen.

It could be possible, we just need to tear down the kernel (once it gets worked around) and play with it some. It was kinda funny though because after giving my Captivate to my GF and getting my atrix, I look at the Cappy and go "Holy crap that screen is REALLY blue"
I was surprised on the Atrix screen. The forum didn't give it justice. The characters looks very sharp. Colors are easy to the eyes and no pixels at all!

just take a look at your battery meter when it's green.
any green (like real green, not dark) text on the web shows the obvious differences between the PenTile display and a regular LCD.
IMHO the display of the Atrix is one of the worst displays in a high end phone that I have seen in the last time.
Only the resolution is great, the rest isn't really high end.
Yellow looks more like dirt and faster scrolling or movements show black shadows (e. g. in Angry Birds).

Xperia z vs Xperia ZL..A close comparison!

Ok had a play with ZL and XZ in a local store..I am surprised by these things:
As we know most things about the XZ i wont go onto those points..rather ZL.
1. ZL is more brighter and better contrast than XZ..And no the values of calibration were set to 0 on ZL..i put up sony live wallpaper [purple] on both and ZL was visibly more brighter and vibrant!I Wonder what was sony thinking not giving its flagship that same screen? :/
2. Sound through headphones and speakers both were better on ZL..Dont know why? i can understand speakers bcoz of water proofing.
3. Easier to use due to small size and withe same size screen is a plus.
And alas i am confused :/ Dont wanna loose the build quality of XZ but want a brighter screen too!

Could have been better if you can provide pictures.
they didnt let me do that there..i was at a local store..I'll try to pursue next time..But trust me ZL is more brighter..Can there be a mod to increase XZ brightness??..
Bcoz it looks dull in comparison! But i want the XZ only
^
Was it a demo unit or a retail unit ? All demo units have the ****TY JDC panels. Retail models in most countries have the Sharp panel (same as the one on ZL)
I guess both were demo units..Coz there was some videos of each's advertisemnt going on once u leave them doing nothing..but cud be some screen saver too. but i could be wrong too! bcoz one guy bought the XZ and it looked same.
P.S. Also look here even pocketnow notices the screen difference..guess we will have to wait for gsmarena -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siiv2XltFXY
^
ZL uses Sharp screen only, whereas Z first batch has panel lottery and demo units get poor panels. So you can't compare that way. GSMArena got the second worst panel (JDC) so obviously ZL review they will rate the display better but it's pointless as they didn't review Z with sharp panel.
Z with sharp panel will be same as ZL.
So how do i know which is the sharp panel? anyway of knowing from the box? bcoz they will open it only if i buy it!
XZ brightness is fine, whatever you and the others say is exaggerations!
I just received my ZL on Friday, i must say the ZL is more comfortable to hold in my hand and screen is a bit better. sad but going to sell my Z soon

Do you have a picture that shows the screen of the z and zl? I am quite curious because i am about to get the zl but is discouraged after reading reviews regarding the screen of the z.
Did you tried to uncheck AutoBrightness, and set the brightness level at maximum level? Doing so i found XZ to be very bright. In fact too bright for normal usage. Sony should tweak AutoBrightness in the next update. Also should discard gray theme. Replace it with black. Bad mistake that gray.

its the second time ive seen comparisons like this, not only could the exact same screen be calibrated differently towards warmer and darker colours, (software, not hardware) but if you look closer they are different pictures, and picture colours could have been tweaked before its displayed on screen for exanple take a screen shot of wallpaper vuew it with bravia on, then do another screen pic and save as wallpaper. “Ohh! Look everyone my, my screen is more vivid and has better contrast then your screen! Yeah! You suck! Iam the winner, martin sheen is winning"
Dunno about you guys, but I don't have my brightness set up all the way on my XZ. It's too bright for my taste. 60-80%max.
Maybe thats why my battery lasts so long?

I agree. Compared my Zl screen with three XZ screens at two different sony stores & found that ZL screen indeed has better viewing angles & colour vibrance than those on XZs. I tested same wallpaper using album app at full brightness & bravia engine enabled (adapt to light checked) in all the units. Sorry that i can't provide any photos of the same.

Xperia SP with a unbelievably "white-washed" display

Just bought the Xperia a few days ago and been playing around with it ever since. by end of the Day One, I find the overly whitish brightness increasingly annoying. and the more I compare them with the display in other phones, the more I find it unbelievable that Sony would be incapable of incorporating a better display into this phone. In fact, after having personal first-hand user experience with the phone, and making repeated visit to the Sony Centre with its full range of Xperia smartphones on display, and comparing the SP with the displays on other models, I found that Sony phones general has that whitish overexposed element which are not present in smartphones from other brands, HTC, Samsung. Heck, even a ACER and LENOVO phones has better display in term of its viewing angles and in showing white colour. Displaying black is acceptable but the moment there is any bright colour, all hell break loose with the display, with pictures and graphics looking like they have been photoshopped and tweaked to the maximum brightness. I find this totally unacceptable and I am putting the phone on garage sale forum already, which is rather unfortunate, because other than the display, I am very fond of the phone's design, material and the general simplicity of Xperia interface.
It is a complete mystery why nobody and none of the reviews make a bigger issue about gross inadequacy. it is utterly terrible. I am sure I am not the one only here who noticed this. can any members here share your views on this ?
Lol... I've had many android devices and I always prefer the whites on the Sony devices because they're the ones that actually look whiter while other devices have whites that are way too warm and ruin many pictures... Don't understand your complaint...

you have no idea what I am talking about. the white balance is already at its lowest possible setting. adjusting anymore will only change the tint effect and not the brightness. it is not just whiter. it looks OVER-EXPOSED. do you even know what an overexposed pictures taken by a camera look like ?
when a colour that is supposed to look red started to look like pink from certain angle, it is just pure, unaduterated, lame display.

The screen hasn't got the best viewing angles, I agree. I also find the gamma curve is biased towards showing a lot of definition in darker tones, which leads to the impression of reduced contrast - ie: dark tones don't look dark enough until they're near to black.
Those criticims aside I find the screen very good quality. I'm glad I don't have to live with Samsung's "technicolor" OLED screen where everything's pumped up.
Also, turn off BE2 if you want natural colurs and contrast.

Perhaps next time, make your comparisons before purchasing your phone.
Secondly, all this talk of viewing angles, now, forgive me for being a little simplistic here, but, as a general rule, I, and probably many others, tend to hold my phone pretty much parallel to my eyes, why anyone would want to look at their phone at any angle other than say 30 odd degrees to this is completely beyond me!???

After reading the replies, I noticed the difference in quality is there but apparently, some people doesn't find that it is a big issue, which is a complete mystery to me. one good example is this kind of comment, which make absolutely no sense in how one justify and defending an obvious fundamental flaw. "as a general rule", people nowadays do put their phones on the tables and turn their sight to somewhere else and then glance at its side from the sight. the same goes for the tablets. maybe, you hold and look at your phone right in front of you day and night, but if you don;t know single person who doesn't do that all the time and expect to be able to see the same colour and contrast when you are viewing your phone when they are lying on the table, then the problem lies with you. seriously, even if you hold the phone directly in front of the eyes, the ****ty quality of the display is so significant, it just boggle my mind why so many people wanna defend the indefensible ? the inferiority in comparision to the display in other phones are clear and present, why would you or anyone allow a phonemaker to give you a display that has brightness that give you a completely washed-out effect, when the display on even a China no-name brand doesnt ? just because you grew up with a Sony Ericsson phone and has a soft spot for it ?

that is not an option. i chose Xperia SP because of the size, which is just right for mobility and convenience sake. Xperia Z1 is too big and Z Ultra is just ridiculous. it is a mini tablet, not a phone. and since you brought this up, this is what irks me the most. these two upper-end models are the one only with a display that has the natural brightness and colour seen in phone from Samsung Galaxy, HTC etc but their screen display are consistent across the entire range from budget to upper-end. mind you, this "Triluminous Display and X-Reality" doesn't really offer anything new or fancy, it is just a fancy term of Sony to integrate something into its phone display to make them look comparable to phones from other brands, something they should have included in its range of phones to begin with. I highly suspect that Sony deliberately skim on the quality of the display for this Xperia SP in exchange of giving you a mid-ranged 4G LTE phone with Adreno 320.

no one should apologise for thrashing Xperia SP. dont even get me started on the insensitive touchscreen AND the totally unbelievably weak WIFI reception. I am talking about a wifi connection that I have been using for years in my house, and is being used and detected now by other Samsung, Iphones, tablets, notebooks in the house now. nine out of ten times, the Xperia SP is unable to detect, latch on and then subsequently connect to the WIFI signal after I went outside and returned home. this has never happen to any of the devices we used in the house before, except when the device is faulty to begin with.

All i meant to say was that, if you stick to Sony, then right now only these two offer the good displays with good viewing angles..besides the honami mini will also be released and that just might be the perfect phone for you. SP has great hardware and software and really at this price range, a phone cannot get any better . It's a high end phone with mid range price. I personally prefer phones with viewing angles like SP because it's more private. Or else people can read anything or see anything from anywhere -_- again, that's just my opinion. My idea is to switch to a Z1 mini when it comes out. The quality of the display is something i need, and viewing angles is just a plus point to me. I really don't care much if the viewing angles are good or bad as i do always use my phone at parallel eye level

I think the display is fine myself. Samsung displays, in. My opinion, are bloody awful, yes, you might be able to see it from pretty much perpendicular to your eyes, but the dreadfully oversaturated colours are terrible. Add to that the phone isn't that good looking (again, my opinion) and the people I know that have got one have both complained about poor build quality (chrome bezel peeling off) and rubbish battery life, and Samsung STILL insist on putting the back and multitask button s the wrong way round!

incidentally, I happen to remember looking closely at the Xperia Z in the Sony Centre and still remember its display screen as having a certain whitish element not present in other phone. and its comparatively inferior constrast ratio is more or less corroborated by some reviews, including this one http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z-review-887.php
Main disadvantage
Low contrast display with below-par viewing angles
Non user-replaceable battery
13MP camera hardly any better than some competitors' 8MP units
Feeble loudspeaker
More disturbingly, the display has rather poor contrast for a flagship unit and not really inspiring colors. As testified by the measurements in our dedicated test it comes nowhere near the standard of its main competitors and it even fared worse than its predecessor.

I will accept it once I have seen it. as far as I am concerned, it is the dark ages if Sony only use its upgraded display tech on its high-end phones and skim on them on its mid to low-range phones. if Samsung and HTC can do it with across its range of phones, there is absolutely no reason for Sony to be unable to do it.

I don't have any problem with my phone. .245 update solved the random touch bug and wifi for me, and I think the screen is pretty good, although kind of reflective.
You might want to have your phone checked. My display is made by JDC.
I have Samsung phones, so I know what amoled looks like. LCD displays are sharper, but amoleds have better contrast.

Before SP I had Xperia J (changed it because it was too slow for me) and the display of the J (lower resolution thou) have better black contrast and it is better looking.
The XSP display have really washed out colors like the Nexus 7 (2012) have and on the SP I think they are even worse.
I have made this test: made a screenshot of my phone desktop and then saw the picture in the album - when the Bravia ENGINE optimized the picture - it looked far better.
Is there a way to make Bravia ENGINE work all the time in real time ?

Some criticism about this device

Just bought my Moto X from motomaker, made an order on thursday and received it this morning - so fast (St Louis, MO)!
So my main concert is the screen brightness. Even my Galaxy Nexus was not the brightest phone that I ever had, but Moto X screen is even dimmier. It is probably the same screen that was used at Galaxy Note 2 except being smaller. That screen was dim as well. That causes the display to be reflective to lamps and sun which annoys me.
Second thing that I did not like so far, is, surprise, the phone's shape which everybody likes. For me the edges are too sharp, maybe I just have too big hand.
Camera is a little bit better than Galaxy Nexus camera, for me the quality of it is ok so far.
But active notifications rock.
Do you know if it will be possible to increase the brightness somehow?

I don't find the brightness to be an issue, even turned all the way down - any chance you can go to a retailer and check to see how the brightness compares on one of their floor models? It seems like that could be a defect, rather than working as intended.
I don't know the Max brightness is fine for me. I actually wish the brightness went Lower. That is really not that big of a problem. As for the camera I don't know what all the criticism is about. The low light could be better but I think the regular shots are very good

Eh, depending on the kernel drivers maybe increasing the brightness is possible. But I doubt it. I think its happened before on other devices, but usually LCD screens. This is amoled so I bet it won't happen.

2nd, i find it quite bright. In most cases i have it set pretty dim. I'd compare in store.
That's AMOLED for you. I had 2x GNEX and both had different brightness and colour. One had to be 55% to be equivalent to the other at 30%.
If you think it is too dim, you are probably right. Just exchange it.

My Gnex with Faux kernel can be set to a ridiculously bright setting through rgb and gamma. Then you have active display/screen mode on the other Galaxy devices so it's possible.

May just be defective. I leave my screen around 40 percent and it's more than bright enough even in sunlight.

I find the camera to be inconsistent. Some photos look great and others look like they have a gray haze over them. I think it just has issues with white balance, really. Because of that, in outdoor sunlight photos look pretty good, but with LED lighting, or CFL lighting, they look washed out.
Hopefully the new update makes it more consistent.

How pure is this Moto X android in comparison with the GS4, HTC One, Xperia Z
You know the pure android.
How much is this android distant with the "pure edition"? (Manufacturer bloatware (except for google))

According to the reviews I've read on Android Central by Phil and Jerry, it is stock Android with a couple of added features that are beneficial rather than gimmicky. The skin looks like vanilla Android, whereas TouchWiz, Sense, etc. use difference icons, different menus, OEM-specific apps (like Samsung's S Voice, for example), etc. The Moto X seems to be stock Android 4.2 with a transparent navigation bar, active notifications, and the Motorola app to connect the phone to the computer (so you can get incoming texts, etc. on your desktop).

It has a very pure Android feel. As mentioned above, there are just a couple nice additions. The active notifications really should be included on all smart phones.

I completely agree with the edges but I also agree it is because you have big hands. I was dropping the phone all the time because of its size. I got this case that fits nice is a little bit thicker and looks pretty nice. I actually only got the case because I wanted a little but more grip on the phone with these shaq like hands I have.

I can post/send you some real pictures later if you would like.

XZ1's JDC Screen vs XZ1's low quality screen (sharp?)

Sup Z1 owners,
Ok so I went to a store, and bought a Z1. Than I compared to the retail model. And this the result. Sony are you serious, you ruin everything.
Cheers,
If you want post your pictures
My device (I returned already) is on left side obviously and looks sooo ****ty on the screen.
The other screen is awesome! Compared to note 3 its almost as good as note 3's screen
How can i check what kind of displey i got on my z1?

Mine is same as the right one. JDC screen model number BH904**

I'm curious too... can anybody explain how to get this info?
all c6906 come with screens on the right
Yeah my screen looks like the right one, even a little better, your case is extreme dude

Here's a comparison between the bh90f and cb512 the 512 has jdc screen the other has sharp.
Oddly the jdc is the left one, IRL it has nicer greys/whites and no yellow hue.
I had good screen on 534
Became yellow on 257
Did a factory reset, and now fine on 257
Try it, it might work

i just received my xperia z1 today in videos to me the display looked great it must be JDC displays in ever video because my device looks like the picture in the right i have been waiting to receive this phone for a while and now i can say the display does not look any better than my xperia s's i might have to go back to my s4 good thing i still have it i am disappointed with this display
wow, yeah that's what some of yall was referring to with the yellow issue.
Mine def does not look like that.
C6906 bought directly from Sony Store in Canada.
So this is the famous yellow hue in the Z1. Now I can said I am lucky one for some aspects, not all.
you are all seriously out of proportion, first of all, it's almost impossible to tell whether your screen does or don't look like a screen you see through a photo, perhaps your computer screen is yellow!
second it's much easier when you look at it next to another phone.
third, stop the bs, z1 has much better viewing angles than the xz, take one and compare other than that, it is no amoled, can't do **** about it, but when viewed from usable angle (and i mean an angle where you can use your phone, not one that you can see it) the screen is absolutly stunning.
this comes from someone who compares to other friends phone have a tad more yellow screen, perhaps...

In addition to what you said, the white balance in that OP shot, was so wrong into the warm scale that it is going to make everything look ten times worse than reality, although it does still show that there is in fact a difference, would have been good to know that your brightness on both were the same, because I am sure they were not, all shops I went to had the slider on max and the phone shipped doesn't so you would have to consciously have to make that change. Because I can simulate with one phone, just buy using the brightness slider the same as your opening post
I have a fully professionally calibrated screen and my phones white standard matches my screen almost perfectly, most people from what I can gather prefer a more cold white, if so +8 green and blue makes my Z1 similar to my Z and more close to the HTC One.
Both devices needs calibrating.
Maybe there is a different lightsource hitting on the right, but that one to me seems to have too much red in it.
The white balance app is up for grabs.
Someone who has two z1's in close proximity should try testing and see if they can get them to be equal, and if that fails, I'd be more inclined to believe there are that many "faulty screens"
