Metro PCS and Moto G - Moto G General

So I went to a Metro affiliate store and purchased a sim card which they set up for my wife's Moto G (US GSM). When we left the store telephony was working flawlessly however it wasn't getting data. The store rep said that the phone will automatically get data after an hour. Me being the skeptic I started poking around and it turns out the phone only had the apn settings for Tmobile. I ended up searching the apn settings for MetroPCS which were as follows:

That's interesting. I just switched my wife over to a Moto G (US GSM) on MetroPCS via online chat. We had the same situation, calls and texts working but didn't notice until the next day that data wasn't working (because we where on our house wifi at the time). I did another online chat with MetroPCS and got the APN settings. The ones they gave me were identical to yours, except:
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
MMSC: http<dot><slash><slash>mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
(I can't post urls yet, so trade out the <dot><slash><slash> with :// )
We are in the D/FW area if that maybe matters. I wonder if maybe they are moving people to this t-mobile APN since the merger? Since changing to those APN settings though, data has been working great.

Thanks for the insight. Just curious does your wife's phone say 3G or does it say hspa?

I've only seen it say 3G so far, but I did a few speed tests (only from our house though) and the data speeds were in the same ballpark as my Nexus 4 which does indicate HSPA, so I haven't been overly worried.

The US Models show 3G even though they're connected to HSPA.
Go into Settings > About Phone > Status ....and you should see its connected to HSPA.

Moto G problem?
Hi Guys,
Are any of you guys using MetroPCS and Moto G together in New York? I purchased a Moto G and having trouble connecting to MetroPCS network. It keeps saying cannot connect to preferred network, please try again later.
I reset the phone 3 times already but no luck so far. However, it picks up a TMobile SIM card right away. Do I need to do anything manually?

It was my understanding that the MetroPCS network is CDMA while the newly merged Tmobile is GSM. I'm on MetroPCS with 4G on an LG Motion and get very good data service (Central Florida). The LG has been a surprisingly good phone but I'm drooling over the Moto G but I read somewhere that in a couple of months the CDMA version would come out and I could use that on the MetroPCS 4G network. Can anyone confirm or contradict this? I have no idea what kind of data service I will get around here on Tmobile, so I would hate to get locked into that by virtue of the GSM phone. MetroPCS is very strong here and I would like to stick with their network.
Update: The Tmobile page (can't post links yet, sorry) seems to indicate that the Moto G will only operate on Tmobile's HSPA+ network in areas where 1900MHz has been converted from EDGE to HSPA+ when the specs of the Moto G are taken into consideration. If I read it correctly, the G would need to also work on 2100MHz to take advantage of those speeds on the rest of their network. I have no idea how much of their coverage is 1900MHz. The CDMA version won't work on 4G LTE from those specs so I guess using it on MetroPCS is not going to happen.
Moto G Specs
Global GSM Model:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
US GSM Model:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 1700 (AWS), 1900 MHz)
CDMA Model:
CDMA/EVDO Rev A (850, 1900 MHz)
Both GSM models require a micro SIM card.
Thanks.

MetroPCS is phasing out their CDMA devices they are going all gsm. Get the US GSM version of the phone it works great on Metro PCS. We are currently in the Orlando area for the holidays and have had no reception issues.

More or less. Install the T Mobile Visual Voicemail in the play store and it seems to work fine. The voicemail to SMS is an upgrade (extra fee) so I haven't tried that, but I do get notifications of VM, select the order to play, delete, etc.

Unfortunately, I'm on Straight Talk and I have yet to see decent speeds. I'm pretty sure they throttle the bandwidth. I know they use ATT towers, but when I had ATT directly, speeds were much faster.

I recently got on with metropcs and had a issue. Of slow speeds, turns out they need to do a refresh of your Sim after installing or it gets throttled for exceeding your 4G limit. Now your probably saying "wait the moto g doesn't support 4g". Which is what I had to explain to their dealer support, who kept insisting I used 500 megs in 2 hours just in email notifications(pre downloaded everything on my home WiFi before going into the store) but it turns out they just needed to update the device on their end.
so what I thought I'd do is, pretend to be one of those deaf mutes

It's very usefull.Good.

Help
I can not for the life of me get this to work. The people at the metro store were predictably zero help.
I have the regular 3g moto g & in Boston. Thanks.

unlocked on at&t no 3g

I tried to get the $15 (200 meg) data package to work, but there is no signal showing up on the phone. anyone got any ideas?
Yeah. I have really good idea....... at&t sucks

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
They use different freqs for the different companies 3g in the states, at&t uses the "standard" freqs and tmob uses its own due to fcc regs. They may also use different flavors of 3g also(ie UMTS, HSPDA, wcdma) the acronyms are endless...

Any ATT data plan should work, but only with ATT's 2G service*.
there are a few things I could think of that could be causing your problem which are separated by phone or network problems (these are all assuming your phone is searching for signal and isn't giving you any obvious errors about the sim):
PHONE PROBLEMS
1. Your MT slide is locked to WCDMA only, which won't work on ATT (see explanation below*).
2. Your unlock method didn't work.
3. Any other random prob with your handset hardware/software.
NETWORK PROBLEMS
1. You are not in a ATT 2G coverage area
3. You are in a location that the ATT 2G signal is being blocked.
2. There is an ATT network outage in your area.
The quickest way to narrow down your prob is to get a hold of an ATT phone that is working (either from a friend or an ATT store) and test your sim in that phone. that will tell you if you need to start troubleshooting your phone or your sim/att service.
*ATT uses a different frequency for their 3G coverage (ATT uses 1900 mhz and 850 mhz WCDMA as oppose to T-Mobiles 1700 mhz WCDMA). this means that if you locked your phone to WCDMA on the slide, then it is going to try to look for an ATT signal at 1700 mhz, which does not exist. Unfortunately there is no way to "re-tune" the radio hardware in most devices to operate on a different frequency, so your probably stuck with 2G only if you continue to use ATT.
the only exception that I know of is the blackberry bold 9700, in which the radio hardware actually supports all gsm/wcdma bands, and just has the "Carrier appropriate" bands enabled in the software. this may be the case with the MT slide, but I doubt it.
UMM before any of that I'M GUESSING YOU HAVE THE PROPER AT&T APN SETTINGS?? Correct?? .. if not, you need to find the att apn address and replace the stock epc address

The apn definately must be correct to use data once the phone finds signal and connects to ATT's network, but jeffbichel said his problem is that the phone isnt getting any signal to begin with. the apn only comes into play once your phone has already found and connected to a cell tower.
I read elsewhere that the only way to get a Slide working with 3G on AT&T is to order one destined for Roger's telecom Canada since they use the same 3g frequencies as AT&T...
You can use a TMO phone on AT&T, the 3G will not work, EDGE only. On an Android phone the APN settings must be set correctly for AT&T for the data to work.

VZW 4.4.2 (XT1060) on T-Mobile

Verizon is at it again. When using a T-Mobile SIM in my XT1060 with 4.4.2, I'm stuck on EDGE where I'd previously get HSPA+. The APN setup has been fixed, so it no longer disappears, but it doesn't really matter if you're stuck on 2G.
4.2.2
Worked perfectly with HSPA+ and LTE
4.4
Broke APN setup
Gimped HSPA+ speeds
4.4.2
Fixed APN setup
EDGE only data
EDIT: EDGE is forced in Global mode; select LTE/GSM/UMTS and UMTS only to restore HSPA+; wait for the modem to cycle and allow the SIM to register on the network
I still have issues with HSPA+ speeds on my phone. It could be a localized issue, but I'll have to do further testing.
So, it's officially useless.
All have voice/SMS, though some had issues with voice on T-Mo's LTE.
You are the second person to report this. Could you try a factory wipe or something? I have no idea why it would be EDGE only.
I am curious what would have changed. I did compare the built in APN list between 4.4 and 4.4.2 and noticed the built in APN for T-Mobile US changed from fast.t-mobile.com on 4.4 to epc.t-mobile.com in 4.4.2 which is an older APN. Have you tried manually adding back the fast.t-mobile.com APN?

Only the unlocked phones automatically add APNs. With the Verizon XT1060, I have to manually enter the APNs, and I only use fast.t-mobile.com.
On top of the EDGE only limitation, it occasionally times out completely, so that there's no throughput up or down through the modem. It seems Verizon has completely gimped data on other carriers. I disabled the Verizon APN and APN Permissions apps, but there's something deeper that's causing this. It could be in the kernel, which wouldn't be a good thing at all.
The kicker though is (excerpt from FCC's C Block Rules):
(e) Handset locking prohibited. No licensee may disable features on handsets it provides to customers, to the extent such features are compliant with the licensee's standards pursuant to paragraph (b)of this section, nor configure handsets it provides to prohibit use of such handsets on other providers' networks.
The key words are disable features and prohibit. Technically, they aren't prohibiting access of the handset on T-Mobile's network, but they are limiting it in a way.
I got H+ with 4.4.2 on my VZW Dev X. I had to edit the APN Type setting to be default, mms, supl. The rest of the settings matched my T-Mobile Galaxy S4 LTE's APN settings. Under mobile network settings, I also have selected LTE/GSM/UMTS.
I am at the office where it is serviced by an internal antenna system, so I don't have T-Mobile LTE, and I don't think its setup for 1900Mhz UMTS, but there is a refarmed T-Mobile antenna and LTE outside.
Ok, now it switched to just bars. And back to Edge. Not sure if this is due to the internal antenna system or the update.
Voice calls (in/out) work, SMS send/receive works, MMS send/receive works, web browser works, Hangouts works.

This makes sense as the change in the default APN was the only obvious change I saw between 4.4 and 4.4.2. It's at least encouraging that you got HSPA+ to work by changing the APN. Have the others with problems tried changing or adding a new APN to match the one from the previous build? For reference here is the old and new APN information copied directly from the APN list on the Verizon Moto X.
XT1060 with 4.4 built in T-Mobile APN:
<apn auth="NONE" mmsc="http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc" password="none" server="*" user="none" apn="fast.t-mobile.com" mnc="260" mcc="310" carrier="T-Mobile US" protocol="IPV4V6" mtusize="1440"/>
XT1060 with 4.4.2 built in T-Mobile APN:
<apn auth="NONE" mmsc="http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc" password="none" server="*" user="none" apn="epc.tmobile.com" mnc="260" mcc="310" carrier="T-Mobile US" preloaded="true" type="default,mms,supl,hipri,fota" protocol="IP" mtusize="1440"/>
Mine is still on EDGE, and doesn't even bother going to HSPA+ even though it's in the area. Even without the APN setup, it would automatically connect to HSPA+. The speeds just wouldn't be right until you put in the APN settings.
Speedtest reported 0.01Mbps down and 0.02Mbps up, so it's definitely 2G and not a reporting bug.

What do you mean without the APN setup? Just confused as to whether you are describing before on 4.4 and now on 4.4.2. I think everyone is in agreement that the APN settings for T-Mobile on 4.4.2 are wrong which is definitely part if not all of the problem since it's the most obvious change from 4.4. Have you tried adding a new APN using the settings used in the 4.4 build and selecting that as the APN to use?

As I told you before, the Verizon Moto X DOES NOT automatically add APNs. It never did on 4.2.2, 4.4, or 4.4.2. Only VZWINTERNET is ever automatically added.
I also said that I'm using fast.t-mobile.com.
It's not the APN setup. HSPA+ is disabled.

I know what you said but you are referring to what shows on the APN list in Mobile Settings. Just because an APN doesn't show in that list doesn't mean it isn't preloaded into the phone but set to not be viewable. There is a huge list of APN's preloaded onto the Moto X for just about every major GSM carrier in the world and these are used when a SIM used when on that carrier (file pulled directly from my Moto X is attached in the zip file to this post). If the APN preloaded is wrong it will cause problems with data working. My question on you using the APN from 4.4 wasn't just the APN address of fast.t-mobile.com but also the remaining settings which matter as well such as protocol and type. I am just trying to help from my experience dealing with these sorts of issues and the fact that another user got HSPA+ to work earlier today is what made me think there might be more to it.
Anyway I should have access to a friends AT&T Nano SIM in the next day or two and since it uses the same band of HSPA+ as T-Mobile does on the Moto X I can check on that too.

I know they're included in the build, but I've ALWAYS had to manually add the APN to get things working properly; the included APNs are usually for carrier unlocked retail phones like the XT1053. In 4.4, manually added APNs would usually disappear, but I found a workaround to make it stay. Still, HSPA+ was artificially limited (0.05-0.20Mbps down, 1.0Mbps up) just like when the APN isn't setup. Now on 4.4.2, it will only connect to EDGE, regardless.
Looking further, even when using fast.t-mobile.com, the phone forces epc.tmobile.com and EDGE only. I'm not rooted, so there's nothing I can do about it.

Okay that is bizarre. I just remembered one of my coworkers had a iphone 5s on t-mobile and just borrowed her SIM. I am also on a stock, non-rooted Verizon Moto X running 4.4.2 and it connected to HSPA+ immediately. I didn't even change the APN at all. I even ran a speed test and got 4.33MB down and 1.84MB up. Here is a screen shot of the status attached. Not sure why it worked for me and not for you.
Could be time for an FDR, but before that, I'm gonna try a different area of service.
I have another T-Mobile SIM that I can register as well if all else fails.

Yeah I wish I could tell you that I did something special to get HSPA+ to work, I literally did nothing other then take out my Verizon one and put in the T-Mobile one, didn't even do a restart or change it off of Global (although I did shortly after switch it to LTE/GSM/UMTS to test that as well). The weird thing is it didn't connect to LTE at all when I know on 4.4 I could get it to connect it just wouldn't let you make calls. To be fair I didn't try much to try and get LTE to work aside from adding a new APN with the so called corrected T-Mobile LTE APN settings as my coworker wanted her SIM back. Maybe others can play around with that more.

I even went into fastboot and erased the modemst1 and modemst2 again to have it reregister everything. Still nothing. Unless T-Mobile removed HSPA+ from the area around my home recently, I'd say it's the phone.
I'll keep playing with it. I'd really like the 4.4.2 flash files though just to be sure something didn't happen in the OTA update.

Then once you have it try setting the preferred network to WCDMA only or GSM Auto and see if that helps as well.

Already tried all of that. It only connects to EDGE. I used the hidden phone settings menu to access the more advanced settings, and still no dice.

Just as a follow up.. At home, in an area where T-Mobile has HSPA on 1900mhz, I do get H+ and even LTE (band 4) (LTE speed test screen shot -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/X-STUFF/2014-02-27 01.47.07.png ).
When On LTE, the "bug" of making a call drops signal/service still happens.
When I keep it on UMTS and have an H+ connection, it works fine. And the connection is stable at home.
I'm attaching some shots.
And I should mention, the SIM I'm using is a T-Mobile Nano SIM that I use with an adapter in my T-Mobile Galaxy S3. I had it switched to Nano so I could also put it in my iPhone if/when needed (its a work thing).

After filing a complaint with the FCC against Verizon, I got a call from a VZW rep

So, as some of you know, if you use the XT1060 with T-Mobile and connect to LTE, you'll have one of two issues: 1) it connects to LTE, but you can no longer call out (or receive calls) as the phone falls back to CDMA even when locked out in the network settings, or 2) it doesn't connect to LTE because it locks the T-Mobile 3G APN in even when a manual entry T-Mobile LTE APN is selected (my issue). My X absolutely REFUSED to move to fast.t-mobile.com and failed to connect to LTE and had absolutely no signal whatsoever (no HSPA or GSM even when on LTE/GSM/UMTS). The reason from the tower: APNfailed. Tried a million times to change the APN in the LTE area to no avail.
I've found it will only change to fast.t-mobile.com (manually entered) in a non-LTE area. Well that's a great inconvenience. I had to disable LTE completely and restart the phone to get it back on HSPA+ (or wait 5-10 minutes).
Anyway, the Verizon rep called me to "troubleshoot" my issues when connecting to T-Mobile LTE. I refused to go through the typical troubleshooting steps because none of it worked when I tried, so it's not magically going to change. I found that interesting (that they'd call me) even though I've had no direct contact with Verizon. Anyway, nothing was really resolved.
Both of these issues are violations of the C-block agreement. Also, if you select Global mode, it'll default to EDGE even though HSPA is available. It'll go to HSPA after selecting LTE/GSM/UMTS, UMTS only, then move back to Global. Interesting how they make you go through these hoops, eh?

Wow. Hopefully something changes with Verizon and letting people use LTE on other carriers. I know almost all Verizon phones don't get LTE on any carrier other than Verizon even if the LTE bands are supported. Verizon is full of crap.

Flashing AT&T ROM to another carrier

I was wondering if anyone has successfully flashed an AT&T rom to another carriers device, specifically a Verizon galaxy s4. I was told to try it but I wanted to know if it's been done before.
Is the bootloader on your s4 unlocked?

No it is not.
That's good. However, flashing an i337 ROM onto your phone may result in a hard brick. I don't know about the partition layouts on i337 vs version s4.
With an s3, cross-flashing custom ROMs from an international s3 to a North American s3 will hard brick the North American s3.

I think mine is an international version. How would confirm if it is or not?
Is the Verizon s4 a cdma phone with an 3g/LTE sim slot? Flashing an AT&T ROM to your phone may disable phone calls and data as the AT&T ROM requires a specific bootloader and radio frequencies to work. It could also hard brick the phone.
If I were in your position, I would find out how to flash a custom ROM before attempting to flash the AT&T ROM.
Any particular reason you want/need the AT&T ROM?

My phone has CDMA and GSM network settings. I am using this phone on AT&T because I cannot afford to buy a new one right now. Everything works except sending sms on a LTE signal. Fails every time. If I switch to HSPA+ I can send sms but being on this signal causes my battery to drain really quickly for some reason. So I'm trying to sms to work properly on a LTE signal. Someone suggested I try flashing a AT&T rom to my phone since it would most likely have the correct sms files which he believes is why sms doesn't work properly while on a LTE signal.
I understand. Are the APN settings the same for 3g and LTE?

Yes they are
I did a quick search and found this:
Does your mobile web work? mms uses mobile data and standard text messages do not. I have had mobile data take up to 2 days to work on a new activation you stated you took the apn settings off the att site but I just thought I would post what is on my phone just in case it may be different
Name: ATTPhone
apn: Phone
mmsc:http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
Multimedia message proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
Multimedia message Port: 80
mcc:310
mnc:410
apn type: default:mms:hipri
both standard and roaming protacols are ipv4
everything else is not set also try turning mobile data off then back on.
also make sure that the phone is in global mode

Yeah everything works except send sms. I can receive sms all day but it fails to send. I can send and receive mms, make and receive calls and browse the web. It's just send a standard text message fails every time. Those are the same APN settings I have currently. And it's not a new activation. I've been trying to figure out a solution to this for about a month.
international version has better roms than any other carrier ....... am using an s4 att version with international carhdrom 4.4.2

The reason it isn't working on LTE is because the Verizon S4 only supports 2 LTE bands and does not have all the LTE bands needed for the AT&T network. There is no way for you to use the LTE network fully and get SMS to work. This is a hardware limitation.
US GSM (AT&T - Model: SGH-I337):
GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1900/1800 MHz
UMTS/HSPA+: 850/1900/2100 MHz
LTE: 700/850/1700/2100/2600 MHz
US CDMA (Verizon - Model: SCH-I545)
CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B: 800/1900 MHz
GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
UMTS/HSPA+: 850/900/1900/2100
LTE: 700/1700 MHz (Bands 4, 13)
I have not personally needed to do this, but you can modify your "SMSC" preferred network type from "LTE/GSM" to "GSM Auto" which should route all your SMS messages through HSPA+ instead of LTE. Therefore, you can use your phone on LTE (calls/data) like normal but the SMS will be HSPA+.
Root device if you arent.
Install Advanced Signal Status
Hit "Additional Info" in the app and then "Phone information".
Change dropdown for "Set preferred network type:" to "GSM Auto".
You can hit "Refresh" button and it should show "+13123149810" for AT&T otherwise change it to that for AT&T.
Restart phone.
Hopefully that works!

Actually I can activate all the LTE bands through one of the hidden menus. But when I do it still doesn't work.

That is because the Verizon S4 itself, hardware wise, does not support all the bands AT&T uses (like band 17). There is nothing you can do to make your phone work on network frequencies that your device doesn't support, no software can change that.
Sorry.

But in the service menu I have it shows all those bands and gives me the option in which ones to activate

Guide to get 4G LTE Total Wireless ( Verizon ) with 3G issue

First you need to make sure your APN settings are correct.
With my service I had to change that APN to tracphone.vzwentp and that got my 3G service.
After that Dial *#*#4636#*#* for phone testing
Go into * Phone information *
Then down to * Set preferred network type * and set it to * LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) *
This helped give me 4G LTE
And or you need to change the preferred network under cellular network settings to LTE/CDMA
First post so let me know if I need to change anything thanks
So apparently when I changed the band over to USA Band it gave me LTE. The calling worked for around two days and then just stopped working but I still had LTE.
Once I changed the Band back over to Cellular it gave me calling and txt back. I can switch it back and forth to get either 3G or 4G.
I'm hoping that with the new Nougat update it will fix this issue but for now if your calling and LTE work for you on USA Band more power too you.
If the Nougat update doesn't fix this issue I'm going back to Straight Talk AT&T where I had 4G LTE, Talk, and TXT

I only get 5.4mbps down and 2.3mbps up so far.
I'm headed to California in two weeks where I wanted to test it.
Before when I was a Verizon customer I got 65mbps down so I'll see if it's different there too.
It's possible it is throttled. I have Net10 and using the CDMA option because Verizon has awesome signal where I live compared to att. Att did have higher speed rates on LTE but 5mpbs is more than enough for what I need and what anyone should need.
All Verizon MVNOs are throttled to ~5Mbps down, ~2Mbps up. Only Verizon Prepaid proper and Verizon Postpaid are unthrottled.
Hi there, your guide helped me get on LTE. Thank you!
United States band option is located in the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner.
So why in the world is it that these MVNOs recognize this phone straight away using the verizon network, but through VZW I can only get 3G? This is infuriating! I set up several of these for friends on prepaid networks and they all worked straight away with 4G. Finally added our son to our VZW plan so he could use his phone as an actual phone and it's stuck in 3G hell.
I'm on an MNVO using Verizon's network and it defaulted to 3G. I had to do this to get on 4G. I've lost the ability to make phone calls though, so I'm using hangouts for that function.
I can confirm that regular calling does not function on 4G LTE so like the OP, I am having to switch back and forth on Automatic and United States which is aggrivating.
I hope this helps someone:
I have LineageOS 14 nightly installed on this phone. I was going to return it because I was tired of dealing with the switch to make calls.
I figured out that my baseband wasn't the latest, so I figured one final nuclear option of flashing the stock back on to the device would potentially help this.
After a long bout with a soft bricked phone, I managed to get the phone to flash back to stock Amazon adz and then take an OTA. My baseband changed from x45R to x62R.
I then reflashed TWRP and LineageOS 14. It still didn't work but I played around with the settings and managed to get it working. You have to set the Radio Band to Automatic and then you'll get LTE data and CDMA voice. Preferred network type in Mobile network settings is LTE / CDMA. FYI The settings may reset after a reboot.
