[Q] NEXUS 10 usb 3g thererig on 4.4.2, is it possible? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would love to use my internet usb 3g key on my N10 4.4.2 but I do not find any app working, and I think it is a bit strange... I would love to use it without root, but in case I may decide to root my device if it is the only solution.
The question is: is it possible or is it a dream?
Many thanks for any suggestion.

I am doing it now. Use the tce-manta kernel with ppp-widget. It almost worked out the box but I had to tweak DNS. I was pleased with myself. Yes you have to root to make PPP widget work. I have a 4g AT&T Huwai E368 works now on my Win7 laptop and N7 and N10 and via Bluetooth I can share it.

Yes it does work. I'm telling you. I got it working. I'm running 4.4.2, Kitkat, ppp-widget. The key is to install the tce-manta kernel as it adds compiled modules for the the USB modems, those drivers that N10 Kitkat lacks.
This wasn't difficult, the most time was spent figuring out why it "connected" but also seemed "offline" the reason is ppp-widget on 4.4.x doesn't correctly setup DNS server settings so you can access via IP not host, so the solution is to turn Wifi off before you connect via ppp-widget, or have your Wifi settings static use DNS servers. Other than that, follow what I did and it works "out the box"
root, install tce-manta kernel zip in recovery, install ppp-widget, drag the widget to your screen, accept the root permissions, re-drag it as root permissions approval seems to interfere with the drag, configure ppp-widget with APN settings for your network, plug in your usb modem, accept that ppp-widget should control the usb device..... then see what happens to ppp-widget, mine said modem found and disconnected, then click connect, then it will appear to not work but if you set your DNS settings then it actually works.

ok many many thanks.
I am noob.
I did brick my nexus once, and I did try to do all perfectlyu but menu in guide were different, so, may you suggest how to root (guide for dummies)
and then hoe to flash the manta rom?

Well I personally used WUGS NRT, it works easily but the greatest hassle is getting the drivers installed. I've not done this myself but reading all the guides, the best method which seems the simplest is install SuperSU app, let it install custom recovery tool, that then gives you root (I think).
However, personally, for many reasons, the primary one being performance, I'd do the full hog of doing a stock 4.4.2 install, then root. It seems to purge something from earlier installs which causes lags.
My setup: Using Wugs NRT do a unlock (if you've never unlocked, its a one-time need), WUGS NRT stock+unroot 4.4.2, WUGS NRT root and let it install the Koush custom recovery (not the default of TWRP seems buggy to me). Its not a 100% noob myself but that process worked for me, I got a performing stable 4G-online N10 in my hands now. It has only crashed on me once and that was doing Bluetooth tethering playing sharing the 4G connection out to other devices (N7) simulating us all being in a car streaming off the 1 connection. I guess these hacks have their limits!

many thanks, my device is already unlock, I did try to root it, but when I had to install supersu it did not, was not able to open the file and then did brick...
I will follow your suggested guide, it seems the best way.
Did you check opengarden app? They say it works without rood, on 4.4.2 too, (it seems) via bluetooth, but I did try and I had no connection.
thanks again

I don't recall which exactly it is but one of those "super" somethings you install it, installs custom recovery that then allows you to root. Ask in other forums / different question?

I got a Win7 laptop to work with the WUGS driver install over a year ago when I got my first android - Nexus 7 2012 - and then as it works, just stuck with with WUGS NRT. If starting from scratch now, I'm not sure if it is the best solution, there may be better, but it worked for me so I stuck with it.

NP. Good luck. There's always the problem your specific 3G dongle doesn't have driver support, so even if you get to the very end of the change it still might not work, but that will be a driver issue and you can then try to solve driver issues.

That sounds perfect! I will try it as soon as I will root my device.
I did find another possible solution, it is not perfect jet but it is cool: Opengarden app
I did use my mobile via bluetooth to tether my nexus 10 android 4.4.2.
It works quite well, the only problem could be few applications as playgoogle who do not accept bt connection...
It does not require root.

Yes I stumbled on it too a week-ish ago, I also tether my N4 to me N10 and it works perfectly ok for me.
Bluetooth pair both devices
On the phone go into settings, "wireless & networks", "more...", "tethering & portable hotspot", and tick "Bluetooth tethering".
On the tablet, "bluetooth" , select the phone's settings (to the right) and tick "Internet access".
Then it just works!
I just tried Play Store, you're right "no connection", I nosed around and its a DNS issue, and I know the trick to that. You have to do the following in sequence. At some version of Android, if its got any DNS setting from Wifi, it doesn't replace it when using any other kind of data connection. So e.g. if you're on Wifi using a home router chances are it gives itself out as the DNS resolver (say 192.168.1.1), which when tethered to a phone on 4G the 192.168.1.1 is a nonsense address so DNS resolving fails. So you have to a few options. Here's an example which you can do quickly enough at home to demonstrate the fix.
Be on Wifi on tablet
modify your connection to use static and replace DNs with an open DNS server (which is valid from anywhere say 8.8.8.8)
Disable Wifi
Enable Bluetooth
then it should work. I just did and it is working for me, Play Store now working
There are other tricks, there are DNS accelerator apps which solve the issue which I not tried yet.
Bluetooth being lower power has attractions when on battery.

[GUIDE] Enable ad-hoc tethering on your Transformer (needs root!)

Update: If you are using the official firmware 8.6.5.9 (and obviously above) or any custom ROM based on it, you don't have to do anythink described here, because ad-hoc works natively. Thankfully ASUS fixed Googles unintelligible inability to enable connection to ad-hoc networks.
This renders this thread pretty much obsolete, but I won't delete it, just in case anyone doesn't want to or cannot update his device for whatever reason
Hi!
As there are only [Q]uestion threads about ad-hoc tethering by now, I thought I'd write a little guide how to enable it on our Transformer.
edit: If you are using Prime v1.5 (and above I guess), you don't have to do this. Roach2010 already included the modified wpa_supplicant, so you can already use ad-hoc tethering.
All credits and many thanks go to szym for the edited wpa_supplicant that makes ad-hoc possible for us!
!!! Always make a nandroid backup via recovery first! You can then reflash your backup if something fails !!!
I. Via root explorer (obviously requires root access):
If you bought root explorer from the market, you should be able to easily copy and replace the file.
1.) Go to /system/bin and copy the file „wpa_supplicant“ to your sd card as a backup.
2.) Then copy the „wpa_supplicant“ from the attached zip file and paste it into /system/bin.
3.) Long press the file and set permissions to rwxr-xr-x, like this:
User: read, write, execute
Group: read, execute
Others: read, execute
4.) Reboot
Finally tried it myself and works fine
II. Alternative method via adb (requires root access):
This is a forwarded guide from the Xoom section. I tried it myself and it works like a charm. You can find it here.
All credits for the following guide go to kelvie !
1.) Your Transformer has to be rooted! (you'll find a guide how to root here)
2.) Make a backup of your system/bin/wpa_supplicant first!
3.) Unpack the attached wpa_supplicant_xoom_wifi_adhoc.zip file to your adb folder. (if you don't know how to use adb, google for one of the many guides, or look below for another option via root explorer )
4.) push the file to system/bin/wpa_supplicant:
Code:
adb remount
adb push system/bin/wpa_supplicant /system/bin/wpa_supplicant
5.) Because zipfiles don't store permission, you have to make it executable as well:
Code:
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/wpa_supplicant
6.) You also have to change the permissions on /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf for some reason:
Code:
adb shell chown system.wifi /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
7.) reboot
Again, many thanks to kelvie for the guide!
III. Easiest method (requires ClockWorkMod recovery and root):
1.)Download the attached CWM_adhoc_wpa_supplicant_TF101.zip to your sd-card. Make sure to copy it to /Removable/MicroSD, because /mnt/sdcard cannot be accessed from CWM
2.) Boot into CWM recovery.
3.) Hit "install zip from sdcard" --> "choose zip from sdcard", select the zip and confirm.
4.) Reboot
Done. You should now be able to tether your ad-hoc connection
This method doesn't seem to work because I missed an option and don't know right now how to fix it. So if somebody knows how to do this via edify script, please help me out:
Code:
chown system.wifi /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
Use one of the methods above in the meantime, they works flawless.

Q&A
Q: Which app should I use for tethering on my phone? Do I need root access for tethering apps?
A: If your phone doesn't support native tethering, just search the Android Market for 'Wifi tether'. There are a lot of apps for that . I tested Barnacle Wifi Tether on my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 with 2.3.4 MIUI ROM, which worked fine, but I guess all/most tether apps should work fine now. And yes, unless you have native tethering, your phone has to be rooted.
Q: Barnacle gives me the following error on the phone: "DHCP could not bind to DHCP port, address already in use", and my TF is stuck at "obtaining IP Address from barnacle". What should I do?
A: rpavich has found a solution for that. Thanks rpavich!
rpavich said:
1. Change SSID to whatever you want
2. Change Channel to 6
3. Custom Wifi Ad-hoc to none
4. Skip wpa_supplicant checked

No need to wait, you could just try it. If you back up your original wpa_supplicant first, you can always undo your changes. I also added an easier way via root explorer that should be easier.
i just tried it, it connected to barnacle wifi but i couldnt get the internet to work. ill try again tomorrow, it may be my phone.

Did your phone show the barnacle symbol in the notification bar and tell you that a device is connected?
Sent from my rooted X10i using awesome custom roms
I've done this last week and noticed when stopping my hotspot on the phone the connection on the transformer shows it is still connected. So you have to manual disconnect if you want to reconnect again for later use. This is on my Nokia N8 Phone using JoikuSpot.
I tried to do this via the root explorer and it said "you cannot paste here because the file system is read only"

On the top of your system directory in root explorer is a button, that says r/w. Push it and you'll get read/write mode.

Yes, the barnacle symbol was in the notification bar and my TF appeared on the 'client' tab, also the TF said that it was connected to barnacle wifi.
I'm going to try again now
EDIT: Worked perfectly this morning, thanks!
I did it via root explorer FYI
This seems like a rather minor change to wpa_suppliant.conf; any clue if google will fix this in honeycomb? Not sure I understand why it isn't enabled by default...
Ok...trouble getting this to work.
1.) On my Xperia X10; message in Barnacle:
"DHCP could not bind to DHCP port, address already in use"
2.) On my TF: it's stuck at "obtaining IP Address from barnacle"

3. Custom Wifi Ad-hoc to none

At the moment you need to root both your TF and your phone. But if you use Clockworkmod, you probably don't need a rooted TF, because I'm preparing an update.zip to flash via CWM
Your phone has definitely to be rooted, ecxept it supports wifi tethering from stock.
edit: darn, amend scripting is no longer supported in Honeycomb. Anyone knows how to change the zip for edify scripting?
edit2: ok, probably got it solved. we'll see...
Ok, I added a zip file for easy install through ClockWorkMod to the OP. It installed fine on my TF101 and tethering works, but please backup your wpa_supplicant before installing this and report any errors. I didn't work with edify scripts before
I also restructured the guide itself, from easiest to most complicate method
Cheers

Would this mod work with an old TP2 windows mobile phone? Will the TF then be able to use it's wifi signal?
Also, if the TF is rooted, will we be able to accept the 3.1 HC update?

Root 4.4.2 HP Slate 7 Extreme

Update5/19/2015 : Kingroot Apk worked on my 4400US model with latest Android 4.4.2
Direct download link:
http://mmgr.myapp.com/myapp/Kingroo...oot-4.0.0.233-release-201505071219_105001.apk
---------------------------------------------
The steps below work on Windows 7 (Not sure if will work on Windows 8.. If so let's us know) Make sure you have Administrator Rights to install software and run executable programs etc.
The HP Slate 7 Extreme has a few different models; mine is the 4400us and I am rooted with the steps in this guide, if you have the 4400us this guide should work for you. If you have a different model it may or may not work (one person couldn't Root their 4407ra). If you could let us know either way that might help others.
It is always a good idea to remove any android software from your PC before using that PC to minimize software conflicts {with the exception of Android Debugging Bridge ( ADB )... It might aid in windows finding device drivers (see link below in steps if needed)}
Make sure you have done BOTH system Updates on you Tablet! From 4.2 to 4.3..... Then from 4.3 to 4.4.2!
(System updates can be found in Settings/About Tablet)
Make sure USB Debugging is enabled on your HP Slate 7 Extreme... (This is very important)
(to do so you will need to Enable THE HIDDEN "Developer options”...
Go to Settings/About Tablet then start tapping on the " Build number" line! (No I'm not kidding)
After a few taps you will see on screen messages counting down how many more taps needed to be a Developer... Just keep tapping till done.
Then go back to Settings Menu... Scroll down to bottom and you will see "{} Developer options” open it and enable "USB debugging" by checking the box.)
Turn on install from "Unknown Sources"
(Found in: Setting/Security)
Also.. disable any lock screen that requires pin, password, Face Unlock, or pattern
I turned my screen timeout to 30 min so it doesn't sleep etc
NOW LETS ROOT .....
Download Moborobo http://www.moborobo.com/
Download Shuame's ROOT Genius http://www.shuame.com/en/root/
Install Moborobo & Run Program
Plug Tablet into PC with it's factory USB cable
Your Windows PC should start looking for and downloading drivers (look down in Windows notification area by clock..click on the icon that is searching for drivers so you can see when finished
...don't worry if one of them says failed)..
just let Moborobo find and install needed drivers etc
note: you will see something you need to authorize on Tablet screen.. so do so!!!!
Now look in notification pull down panel and you should see that Moborobo installed an app on your Tablet... Click to open once then just hit the home button once on Tablet.
[Might help to watch fist 1 minute & 37 seconds of this video only!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5SsjnmV7J4 It a Guide for rooting a different Tablet... But it will show you how to use Moborobo.
...(DO NOT use the older Shuame root tool shown in the rest of YouTube Video!!!!!!!!!)]
[...if still not working (and you have authorized the security popup on Tablet screen mentioned above).. head over to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 and install the minimal adb client on Windows 7 and try process again]
Once your ready to move on.. ( Meaning: Moborobo sees your Tablet..) NOW run ROOT Genius (just Minimize Moborobo)
Root Genius will do it's thing (your Tablet Will Reboot during Process)
Profit (you are Rooted)
Use "ROOT Checker Basic" free in Play Store to ensure you are Rooted!
Note: Root Genius installs a super user app called "Kinguser" during the root process.. (which is also an app backup tool and has tool to disable apps from automaticly starting).
Per Jupiter683:
"If anyone has the Beats Audio Edition and they want to root, Towelroot works like a charm!"
Hit Thanks if I helped!
Screenshot 1
Used "Root Checker Basic" app to confirm Root Access granted.
Screenshot 2
Used "Xposed Installer" with Kit Kat Gravitybox module to tweak quick settings tiles...
Screenshot 3
This is the Super User app Kinguser that is installed during the Root process.
Please Note: that as of the date of this post.. there is NOT a custom Recovery for this Device. Do Not use any Recovery from other Devices like the Tegra Note 7 (you will brick your device). So that means don't use apps like Flashify etc.
We only have Root at this time using the methods in opening post. If you know of other Root methods please share info... I will add it to opening post.

This is initial release or first maintenance version. A really old software.
Update your Motoactv to latest and root only after that.
Keep in mind that versions for 8Gb and 16Gb are different. Choose firmware only for your device.
OR
Install Motorola Device Manager from here https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
Plug in your Motoactv.
MDM has to check it and upgrade to latest (but I have no idea, will it be correct as I have never seen such old firmware like yours)
'Advanced functionality' won't be enabled with root.
Interval training can be enabled/planned via Motoactv portal.
So, upgrade your watch, add new wifi from settings -> wireless, then register new account, go to http://motoactv.com
Voila.

I already rooted it I think.
Problem is, when I run motorola device manager, it only says, no updates and at device it says "N/a"? So no clue how to get the latest software on it.

Uninstall Motorola Device Manager.
Install this version - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9ZhejL5ANmGQjdreG5jR3YybTg/edit
2.4.5 definitely had correct drivers.
Check that battery on your watch is fully charged.
MDM has to detect your Motoactv correctly, search for software and upgrade it,
If it won't - look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534073
3) Fastboot:
- Operating System: Windows/Linux/Mac
- Instructions (Windows): Unpack the zip, run flash-all.bat (if it fails, run as administrator)
- Instructions (Linux/Mac): Unpack the zip, run flash-all.sh (it should already have proper permissions)

Links are in the first post.
at the end, I got it working. Even wifi, although that was on ly a few times, since then I cant login anymore. I am about to sell the watch, as its realy bad in GPS for running (as it was bought as running watch), so I will just sell it as smart watch. But then I do need some apps installed on it. But when you install one app, its full, now trying to get it to install on the SD memory, but again.. not so easy!

[Need Help] [Shield TV 16GB] Cannot log into Play Store on flashing Full Android v2.2

Hi,
I successfully flashed Full Android v2.2 (many thanks zulu99) but now cannot proceed with logging into Play Store or with adding an account (via settingcs>account). I'm able to successfully navigate the add email, password stage of the process but just cannot get to the "Accept" button on the accept terms & conditions screen either via USB keyboard or controller or Shield remote
Can anyone please help solve this or confirm if they have faced similar issues?
Many thanks.

When I had a problem such as this I reflashed the entire system with a recovery package, but replaced the "system.img & recovery.img" with the modded version.
1. you need to sign up as a developer to download the 2.1.0 recovery package
Nvidia's download center
you will be be asked to log in or sign up as a developer which is completely free.
2. Unzip the package & replace the system.img & recovery.img with the modded version & boot into bootloader
then run the "flash-all" script
This should fix any issues you may have had
Thanks Xstar 410
Essentially re-install the ROM from scratch then....
I was hoping to avoid that but happy to give it a go
What beats me is that pretty much everything else works fine and I'm able to highlight radio buttons/ change preferences and such like using either the external keybord/ controller/remote or a combunation of the 3. It's only with signing into my account that I face a challenge - and that too on the last screen prior to login ...
started from scratch and flashed recovery image and flashed system.img from the Full Android v2.2 ROM - same issue - stuck on the sign in page . . . !
cannot get to the "Accept" button to proceed/complete sign in process .........
Any suggestions please?
Solved
Used a mouse - does the trick.
My daughter actually pointed out that I was being a bit silly by not trying out this option!
I should have mentioned that the remote & gamepad won't connect normally so you must use a keyboard & mouse for the modded version.

Damn, i was just about to suggest a mouse
Now you gawn and messed up my "big damn hero" moment
Thanks Xstar410.
Got there finally
Thanks Banderos101 - the rate at which I'm progressing, there are bound to be many 'big damn hero' moments
I just initially thought there was a connectivity problem which i had before & so that's why I suggested the reflash, but the only thing I could connect was the remote & NOT the controller...so that's the only downside for now.

OK, remote and controller (wired) now connected, Xposed framework, Gravity Box, Amazon Prime Video & viper4android installed.
Now to figure out if I can get the controller connected using Droidmote & voice search going........

[Possible] solution to V570KL wifi issue.

Hello, so I also have this phone and I live in Europe so wifi doesn't work.
I took a look into the boot.prop file and that's what I found:
ro.boot.wificountrycode=US
That means if we somehow edited it to our country code wifi should start working!
Now we have to find a way to edit it, here are my suggestions how to do it:
1. Download OG Verizon ROM, unpack it, unpack system.img file, find boot.prop and edit it to this [if you live in Germany] ro.boot.wificountrycode=DE, repack system.img, flash the edited ROM.... profit?
2. [I don't know if this will work with locked bootloader] Download adb, turn your phone into recovery, open cmd prompt, paste this command or something [correct me if it's wrong]: fastboot oem ro.boot.wificountrycode=DE
And that might work... yeah....
Well those are my ideas, if you have other ideas please share them here, thanks for reading. :highfive:

I know this is late but I found a solution. This requires NO ROOT and NO Mobile data. You will need a device that supports Bluetooth or Bluetooth tethering, I used my other phone. So what I did was I downloaded an app called Share it and I sent it to my Asus phone. I mainly used that app to transfer apps to my Asus since I was unable to use the internet but the solution Im about to show you, I found accidentally. So what I did was, I went on share it on my Asus phone then I clicked the Send button. I choosed the application and it then prompted me to turn on my WiFi and GPS location in order to send the file. I turned on my WiFi from the app itself and it enabled the WiFi for my phone In which I used to connect to my router. Once this app is running in the background, the WiFi will most likely stay on. I heard that once you update the phone to android 8, the issue will be fixed and I'm currently doing that to see if they were right. I'll update you right after it is finished. I might also make a separate thread about this
thanks i will do that till we find serious solve

You have to go to send apps, select an app and press the send button, it will prompt you to turn on wlan from the app itself and you turn it on, then you will see your WiFi turn on, that's what happened for me

If you try going into settings and turning your hotspot on, it wouldn't work but the share it app forces it to turn on through the app itself, the same way it's able to do that with the hotspot is the same way it's able to force enable the WiFi through the method I told you, idk if it only works for me or you probably aren't doing it right

That's what I did, hotspot force works [I can turn it on when I use mobile data too] but it couldn't enable WiFi, what version of that app are you using [my is v5.1.48]? What is your phone firmware version [my is v3.7.0]?
Here's a photo of what I see when trying to turn wifi on [Polish]: https://imgur.com/H6L3LlO

when I pressed that button next to wlan it worked for me....I guess you'll have to go with plan B and use mobile data to update your phone, you'll have to go through 2 system updates, once you upgrade to android 8, you should be fine, btw is that a v520kl or a live?

Asus Zenfone AR didn't get Android 8, it was supposed to get it but stupid Google killed Tango so no Android 8, there is still a possibility it may get updated. Asus released in 2018 a rebranded Asus AR [Ares], more and more devices are getting ToF sensors and ARCore will get ToF support in 2020.
And V520KL is not V570KL, these phones are similiar but not the same. If this method worked on your V520KL then I don't know why it doesn't work with Asus AR.
i have an idea
i have plan 3
if used vpn app to make the phone as it inside usa...maybe this method can force open wifi...

UPDATE
I found this app that allows you to see wifi sources nearby you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tester.wpswpatester&hl=en_IN
It can't connect to them though, do you know any app that would allow connecting to wifi?
