My Motorola MotoG (XT1032) - Moto G General

Hi guys!
I've got my new Motorola MotoG (XT1032) from TELUS without contract for only $200!
Great phone for the price; I mean, I almost beat an S-III on the Benchmark (AnTuTu)! 17344 (MG) vs 18142 (S3)
The device have also great spec... The Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU (1.2GHz) work well with the Adreno305 GPU! Not enough RAM for me; 1GB (882MB) it's not enough to push the cell phone at its best but for $200...
Cameras work well, 5MP and 1.2MP with the Motorola Camera apps; a charm after the update!
PRO:
- THE PRICE!
- HD Screen
- CPU Quadcores Snapdragon
CON:
- Not enough RAM
- Only 8GB of memory
- No SD Support
That's the best 200$ I put in cell phone so far! I'm going too give you more detail about bootload and rooting soon!

Its a big little guy!

Not yet... And I don't think to unlock it! Maybe if I decide to sell it but not in my futur project!
Right now I'm looking to root it but it's seem to have a probleme with my rooting tools... Maybe because I've the canadian version!

Update: YEAH! I've rooted it! If you have difficulty with your root, try version 2 rooting kit... The sideloader Way!

If u buy the phone aren't they supposed to unlock it for under the new crtc law

How does it compare it to the S3 overall??

So the camera works noticeably better after the update? Are you referring to picture quality, low-light performance, shutter speed, ...what, exactly, has improved? How would you quantify it?
Thanks,
-- Nathan

I've not noticed any changes about quality! But you have a better experiance versus the lag, performence and waiting time when you take a picture and the mobile save on HD, and come back to camera!
So the improvement is not about quality of the image, but quality of the program itself

On benchmark, the MotoG have almost the same score than an S3! I've personnaly test it!
You know, your going to compare a $200 device (MG) with a $600 device (S-III)! But to be honnest, I'm working in the industry since 2007, and it's the best time I buy a low-cost cellphone and I'm soooo surprised by the quality!
If you want to renew your contract with a free phone, go with the S3 for the general quality and having a well-know-quality-brand! If you want to buy it full price, go with the MotoG!

Have you rooted before going on KK (and then received the OTA) or did you find a way to get root access even on 4.4.4? When I got my G it has already the *.4 version... I hope I could unlock it sooner because after one month I still can't wait to mod it up

Actually, some moto g have more than SIII.. mine has 18396 on Antutu!

Grow up, this is a serious matter. I have experienced this kind of situation a lot of times and I end up regretting for what I chose.
Especially the X10. Bought it impatiently and the next gen phone came out the next week.
I learned and I told myself not to be impatient. Your kind of posts always made people regret themselves. You are not motivating them, you are leading them to despair(a bit too far eh?).
@OP -- Look, the next quad-core smartphone is expected to be released this month. You should wait and at that time, you can make your decision. Besides, DHD isn't powerful anymore now, SGSII has surpassed all smartphones out there. And Nvidia Kal-El looks promising, just wait for sometime.
But I'm not the one who decides what you should and shouldn't do. It's up to you, and I'm not forcing you but I hope you don't regret for what you choose.

I wouldnt have a Dhd over x10 now GB is out
Camera on ALL htc phones suck ass
If you can find a galaxy S then go for it with the superamoled and all but the design isnt too great, the only real advantage over the x10 sgs has is more ram, bootloader and multitouch
I love my x10 and dont care about any other phone at all untill a xperia dual core phone is released
Dhd screen quality isnt good at all and MIUI on it is slow and terrible
But it is a good phone and smooth as butter with the right rom on it
My personal opinion dont flame me guys

Camera is 8 megapixel and has 720p so I have no idea what this guy above means. You have all the latest custom stuff like official support for Miui and cm7. I am able to have 5 roms at once installed without wiping, right now setup is phone rom cm7 slot 1 miui slot 2 sense 3.0. Everything working perfectly. 4.3 inch screen is amazing as well. Everything is fast and smooth with a Linux kernel 3.0 port running and oc'd to 1.5 ghz allowing 50% faster processing speeds. Honestly dev scene here will be dead soon, I've seen rdannar leave j has an arc to play with and trip has a sensation so might as well move on.

why dont u buy sensation or S2 or optimus 2X....
u will regret again on buying DHD.. cause it's older now...
if u have budget limit , then u can buy DHD. my friend has DHD and it's too faster ,stable and better then x10... It has stable custom roms... but S-off and rooting is quite frustrating... it took me 3 hours to do all that in my friend's phone... only drawback is phone speaker and microphone are not good as usual in htc...
LG optimus 2x is more powerful and quite cheap phone , may be almost same as DHD price .. i would rather buy optimus 2x
Even lg optimus 2x is out of ur budget u should buy Samsung Galaxy S[the original one - not Galaxy S-LCD-downgraded model]

Atrix?

So I bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 from Expansys USA and when I got it the Camera sensor was broken. So I'm calling them on Monday and seeing if I can get my money back. It's not that I don't like the phone but I just don't trust Samsung's QC department.
1. Do you think they will refund my money for a straight defect out of the box?
2. Will the Atrix be a good alternative or should I look at something else?
Thanks for your help.
AJ
1. Dont know. Ive read that expansys is overall pleasant to deal with.
2. The atrix is a good alternative. It has its little quirks too, but theyre very minor. I was actually looking forward to the atnt gs2 variant until the rumors started saying hardware keyboard. Anyways, the atrix has an unlockable bootloader. Its good to go.
I voided my warranty.

1. Not sure I don't work there
2. The atrix is a great alternative. Its benchmark scores are now in competition with gs2 with a much lower clock speed, cm7 is almost ready for beta/nightly (I'm using it right now) it has a 24bit screen, it has a much larger battery, and it is much cheaper than the gs2 (you can get the atrix+lapdock for pretty much the same price as the gs2). Also, the atrix dev team is one of the best, and now that the photon bootloader is unlocked there will probably be cross-development between the platforms speeding up development even more. I love my atrix!
Cheers!

Battery life for me has been outstanding since I unlocked my bootloader and out gingerbread on my phone. I'm currently using the CyanogenMod 7 pre beta and I'm getting about 2 days of fairly heavy usage. The camera is fine, but certainly not in the same league as the Sony xperia arc. The only quality difference you'll see when comparing a 5mp phone camera and an 8mp phone camera is if you blow it up. For your everyday point and shoot pictures the atrix will do just fine.

I pretty much just did exactly the same thing as what your are talking about.
smashed my x10i two weeks ago in thiland on holiday (would not boot)
cam back home and brought a nexus s for $300 AUD outright unbranded
camera is pretty good but shame it is not 8.1mp and no 720p video
battery is awsome i am geting twice as long as my x10i had to charge 3x on a friday?
speed is incredible you are geting what 2.3 was built for
lack of SD slot a shame but 16GB is prerty good
i would have like to wait for the galaxy s but money and time (could not live with using my HTC magic anymore)

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a Nexus S for a friend as well.
In your day to day use (say any activity except for gaming), have you had any performance issues at all? Have you noticed any lag?
Thanks!
I'm using Nexus S after selling my Sgs I9003.
Works great with major custom rom, for instance, CyanogenMod7 and MIUI.
If you want your phone be able to got the latest and fastest rom upgrade from google,
then Nexus S would be a suitable phone for you.
It's comparatively spendable in price.
I bought it for Rp.3.999.000,- on Global Teleshop Yogyakarta.
And now, I already loved it....

Not any worth noting I have only had to restart the phone once and it was a Telco issue any way (would not send sms) where My x10i was being rebooted at least 3 times a day running 2.3.
I do like moding my phones but atm i have yet to unlock the nexus mainly because Andriod is getting to the point where there is realy no need to. it just works. (maybe need to get proxys working soon for work )
Bought this phone off someone for $250 wasn't really used. Perfect condition. I would say go for it if you are doing a hardware upgrade. I would have to say - the lack of SD and gorilla glass (not to mention some models dont have AMOled), might as well pay a few more for the new Nexus or GSII. =)
I bought one a month or so ago (roughly) that was only a little over a month old for $150
It's a good phone. I don't like how it feels like cheap plastic (I miss the feel of the Nexus One) but other than that, no complaints. The screen is gorgeous.
I'm content... just impatiently waiting for the CyanogenMod super-geniuses to make some Ice Cream Sandwich magic
you should wait for nexus prime
I have SGS2 but i just ordered Nexus S yesterday. woohoo can't wait!!
so i'll have 2 samsung's by next week!
currently is the best phone you can find with a low price and can still work perfectly another year (waiting for next Nexus)
Galaxy S2 and others are better but more expensive and the user experience does not change enough for pay this difference
The only reason for buy another phone is search for a greatest screen

Came from x10 mini pro 2 weeks ago, just glad to have a phone that doesn't freeze on me. I like the size of it, I miss the flashy and colourful notification LED but the soft buttons on the Nexus S do the notification trick for me now.
I got it because it was guaranteed the 4.0 update, it's pure vanilla android and it was awesome value.
Battery life is amazing!
Just thought I'd post my experience since I came from an SE phone too.

imho the nexus s is the best smartphone you can get for that price right now. It doesnt have to be dualcore all the time. Single core is good enough for most of the operations a smartphone has to do.

I got my xperia sp about 3 months ago. It still is an almost high-end smartphone. To be exact, it's still in the very upper hand of mid-rangers. It can beat up plenty phones in its category, and it's a reliable choise even now. Its processor might be somewhat old, but it's great for multitasking or everything else you'll need. As for graphics, the adreno 320 might be a bit old, but I haven't seen any recent mid-range phones with this g.p.u. except the xperia sp. In other words...it's like it just came out. Buy it and you'll be quite pleased you did. If you want to have kitkat though, there's no information whether this phone will get it or not, so be careful in terms of software.
If you asked me this a week ago I would tell you a straightforward honest no. I was fed up with the tiny problems that always occured and somewhat laggy app responses during use.
But two days ago I got the newest update .205, and everything changed. I finally feel like I got the phone I payed for, and there is nothing I could complain about, really nothing now. It's very smooth and fast in daily use, imidiately responsive, an unbelievable transformation from the former experience I had with it.
$200? Definitely worth it now in my oppinion.

Definitely
I got the phone for my sister (I own the Xperia ArcS) about 2 weeks ago and it is even better than I imagined. Even the stock rom has very few bloatware compared to older xperia phones, extremely easy to root and with a good amount of RAM and internal memory. Plus it's the only 2013 xperia phone that will probably get the 4.4 kitkat update, If I recall correctly
Definitely worthy to buy, IMO
It's quite encouraging so far looking at the answers.
I'm interested in XSP as well. A few people in the official Sony discussion forum complained about low in-call volume. Hopefully those were some isolated cases. What is the experience of you all?
A big Thank You to you wonderful fellow Xperia SP users for your kind and informative replies. I have bought the phone(Got the C5302) and I love it! It is a very good quality phone for the price.

I sure am pleased with it! The fact that it is still being officially sold by sony is nice to boot. Talking of the CPU and GPU, I quite like the CPU and the GPU. What I don't particularly like is the amount of RAM in the phone. There have been instances where the launcher takes time to load into memory after I exit a game or a heavy duty app. Not cool
I must admit the official updates bit is worrying but I took the plunge anyway(Yes, I live life on the bleeding edge).

It's very smooth and fast in daily use, imidiately responsive, an unbelievable transformation from the former experience I had with it.
$200? Definitely worth it now in my oppinion.

It is great to hear that your problems with the Xperia SP are over!!! As soon as I connected the phone to my wifi, i got notifications of updates and I did not hesitate. I too am on the latest .205 too and just like you, I like it too

Yea the stock ROM is very fluid and a pleasure to use. I dig it too! The amount of RAM is descent in this price range but a little more wouldn't hurt Rooted and booted too
I read reports that 4.4 was going to come out in June but since it hasn't, maybe they were just rumors unless Sony is lagging behind. I have a gut feeling that Sony will bring the kitkat update to SP before laying it to rest but I feel the SP deserves a lot more.
Need more RAM though for being able to run any future versions of android(Android L and beyond)

It's quite encouraging so far looking at the answers.
I'm interested in XSP as well. A few people in the official Sony discussion forum complained about low in-call volume. Hopefully those were some isolated cases. What is the experience of you all?

By all means, go ahead! It is a wonderful phone to own. It has a great build unlike the Samsungs et al. You must already know about the update bit where Sony will probably stop support after 4.3 JB or a maximum of 4.4 Kitkat. If you are okay with this and a little dearth of RAM, then this is a sweet little device.
But now coming to the serious bit, I am having issues with the auto brightness. I looked it up on the internet and came across many others having this issue too. I tried the Yet another brightness app ftom the playstore but it doesn't work for me either
P.S. Does Sony provide a way to change the settings menu to black color? White is too fancy for my taste
A query. My Xperia SP had this wallpaper on it. Somehow it doesn't feel right. Can someone shed some light on this?

Also, there are no Live wallpapers by Sony on it( I am not sure about the Enchanted Forrest). Is this right?

Who's getting one?

Hey Guys and Gals
The Desire 820's Specifications look impressive for a mid-range device, featuring a 64bit processor and 2 high quality cameras, high resolution selfie anybody?
The main let down being a lower resolution display compared to some of the high end devices, would this stop anybody purchasing this device?
So, who plans this as their next upgrade?

I'm going to buy this device as soon it hits Europe, ofc if the price will be reasonable in the country I live in.
Actually I realised that this phone exists yesterday, and I'm impressed. I think it will be a great upgrade from my Xperia SP.
I am using nexus 4 and planning to buy nexus 6, however, nexus 6 is hugely overpriced.
Desire 820 has my attention now, I would like to have a dual sim phone, but the most concern for me is the availability of CM11 / other native android rom, I don't need those junk system apps on the phone.
When is this device expected to launch worldwide? It was announced so long ago but it's still not out. ... i want my colleagues who want an affordable phone to get this.

The sixth Sense isn't that bad when it comes to stuff you mantioned But I think the phone will get some attention due to its affordability and specs. It's the first device with Qcom octa-core and 64bit, so I think it will be a pleasure to work with that for devs.

It's expected to launch worldwide on 4th November. I guess all we can do is wait.
Id love to get this phone but as i am in the uk it feels like ill be getting it christmas 2015 rather than this year. Finding info on a UK release is proving very difficult and rather farcical considering it was announced months ago.
I emailed htc customer support and even they have no idea when it is due out, just that they are planning to 'in the future'.
Hopefully in April
I really love the specs i'm seeing and i like the size, but i'm waiting for developement on the device to build up a bit, like a official lolipop upgrade and a CM11/12build or some other AOSP roms etc. But its seems great at a really reasonable price
Am getting this one this week.. [emoji4][emoji4]

I just got one.... Upgraded from and SG-S4, I'm pleased so far but want to get some use in the states to make a final opinion. I too can't wait for more development on this phone.

Let me know how things go, Do you find the phone out matches the SG-S4? tbh i'm sorta torn between the (over priced) Note 3, SG-S4 and this one.

I definitely prefer htc's stock camera. Stock battery seems to last longer too, however I tweaked my s4 so much I don't think anything stock could match the battery life I was getting out of my sg4's custom kernel.
Other than that I just really miss the dev aspect. I might take it up as a hobby just to unlock this baby's potential.
My desire 820 will be delivered tomorrow morning. Hope so. So any recommendations before using it for the first time to improve battery life, performance and others??
Rooting Question
Anyone managed to root the Desire 820s yet? cant seem to make it S-OFF.
