[Q] Galaxy s4 i9505 question.. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi everybody.
I have a samsung galaxy s4 gt-i9505 which is rooted running echo rom 4.3 and all of a sudden my phone has started to reboot itself constantly..(rebooted about a dozen times already today and ive only been awake about 2 hours!!)
What i was wondering is...
Can i go back to my 4.2.2 backup i made in recovery and then flash the official 4.3 update with odin (i know this will trigger knox but i need my phone to work)
If there are any other suggestions anyone has which will not trigger knox it would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks.

What is your battery serial number?!
Read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488245.
A friend of mine had the same reboot problems and they changed his battery. And gave him a free new one but from the same batch with problems.... now he wants to send it back again since his reboot problems reapeard.

Maybe just start with going back to 4.2.2 and see if that fixes the problem first.
Then take it from there if u wanna choose a custom knox free rom or not

Hi,
do you have only battery drains or also random reboots?
the fact is that samsung shipped out a bad serie of batteries (which is confirmed by Samsung) their serial starts with BD
the symptoms of a bad battery are:
Huge battery drain
random reboots
while rebooting the phone hangs at samsungs logo
battery is swelling
phone shutting down while you have an incomming call/sms
when you are the "lucky one" to experience one of the above symptoms please replace your battery asap under warranty
if you don't do this you risk a phone exploding in the pocket of your pants this is not only painfull for your phone but also for "everything else" whats in there

^^^^^^^
Thanks for the info man.I'll let my wife test out my phone when I get it friday.

Bad/lost signal, KNOX, service centre dilemma

Hi, My SGS4 has never really worked since new. I experienced the same problem as this person when I got it last year, ie, it loses signal and then latches off and needs to be rebooted or put in and out of flight mode to nudge it back to life:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2288744
I've tried lots of stuff the operator suggested and replaced the SIM etc. etc. In the end I got fed up and swapped back to my SGS2, which is works fine, and intended to swap the SGS4 for another one. But since moving to the SGS2, the the 4.3 OTA update has been released. I've NOT moved to 4.3 and it comes up with the new software available message every few hours.
On all my other Android devices I've rooted them and to make use of TiB and other neat tools. I haven't done that with the SGS4 yet but would like to once it's out of warranty.
So my dilemma is this...
Should I send the SGS4 back and get another from the operator and risk getting a 4.3 KNOX device, or
Should I send it to a Samsung service centre (as folks in the thread I referenced suggest) and risk that the service centre updating my phone to 4.3, or
Should I root and update to 4.3 without updating the modem etc. to avoid KNOX and see if the new OS fixes my problems but risk my warranty (which runs until May 2015)?
I'm kicking myself for not getting on with this months ago before 4.3 was released. Any views gratefully received.
-Thanks

Hi,
I take it that you have a pre-knox bootloader.
Me too.
I installed a custom recovery and only used custom ROMS/kernels , so I remained on the old bootloader.
At any time I can use Triangle Away and flash a stock MGA firmware to return to it's original state.
I can flash knox-free ROMS and modems and it still does not affect or change the bootloader.
I suggest you try the same.

There is no unusual battery drain in 4.4.2 if not factory reseted do it, it will fix your problem, u can't go back to 4.3 now.
If you do a google search you will see there are many many users affected by the battery drain bug. Im yet to find a fix.

Downgrading my samsung galaxy s4(I9500) to 4.2.2

Hey guys i have a samsung galaxy s4 on android 4.4.2 kitkat and i am not happy at all with the kitkat update since it has ruined battery life and is causing many other problems like lag and overheating
So i want to downgrade to the stock 4.2.2. I have never rooted my samsung galaxy s4 and i am still unrooted.
I know knox will be set to 0x1 after downgrading but i do not care about it as triangle away supports galaxy s4 now .
So here is what i want to know
If i download the proper 4.2.2 firmware from sammobile according to my country(India) and install it via odin then will the process work? and if it is the right procedure does it require root ?
Is there any chance that my phone can get bricked because of knox ?
and how should i take backup of efs in case of a possible imei error ?
I know how to downgrade i9505 but i9500 Im not sure about it I never tested it out
I think you can downgrade successfully, I have a thread about how to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 but its for i9505 check my profile threads
You can downgrade successfully if you follow my guide, but you will lose wifi of maybe imei
So you can solve 4.3 wifi problem by downloading 4.3 kernel
You can use the same way to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.2.2
And for how to backup your imei you will need a rooted device !!
There some apps that backsup imei
Just look for your phone model "gt-i9500"
And you can backup you system starting from imei by having custom recovery like CWM and do Nandroid
And Knox will be tripped
Downgrade or Install Custom ROM

Hey dude,
I don't really understand how the s4 lags - did u try resetting the device?
the battery life is fine with the latest update.
Overheating is still there in i9500 & also it cools down rapidly - I guess its a HW design. Hope it wont be fixed.
I was annoyed with the overheating issue & now i am used to it. It heats while using 2G or 3G Internet & playing games.
Using regular apps it doesn't heats up & now i am okay with it.
Regarding the downgrade, frimware from sammobile will work fine. You will have to install via odin.
no your phone wont get bricked cos of knox - I suggest you to follow a video tutorial and do the downgrade.
But I recommend you to try a custom rom such as Omega, Hassan etc
In my experience the these roms are very good on battery and performance. Pls do note these roms (Omega, Hassan) are based on samsung stock rom.
If you still want to downgrade, I would suggest you to take it to the service center guys & they will do it for free.
Hope this helps!! :good:
Yeah it mostly gets heated while playing games and using chrome
Though i can still live with the heat because eventually i will get used to it after some time
But the lag is killing me
My phone shows lags while entering and leaving apps and camera and gallery too and it was not lagging before on 4.2.2
Also i have experienced significant battery drag
While using the internet it falls of by 1 percent every two minutes
Is this kind of battery drop normal ?
I am really missing the old firmware so i think i am gonna go to samsung and get it downgraded from there
Thanx for the sugesstion bro

I think will be not easy. You voided ur warranty when u downgraded (KNOX:0x1). No service centers will fix it (in theory) :highfive:
No Performance Lag & Good Battery Life

Hey bro,
In my experience with the S4 on Stock ROM I never experienced a lag.
Please check on the settings - switch off the gimmicky features such as Air View, Air Gesture, S Beam, Air Gesture, Motion, Palm Motion etc etc.
Settings --> Connections Tab --> NFC, S Beam, Nearby devices, Screen Mirroring
Settings --> My Device -->(scroll down) motions & gestures, smart screen, air view
Turn locations off
Check the battery graph - see which app consumes more
I had this issues when these features were on.
The phone will be always hot, battery was draining like 1 % for 1 to 2 mins.
There is no lag with camera and gallery.
Battery drag is bit similar that I lose 1% for every 3 to 4 mins on 2/3G Internet. But on Wifi battery is solid.
In my opinion battery is very solid in S4.
The latest firmware is very stable. The performance has increased from old firmwares.
If you hv rooted the device, and got custom recovery just try a custom rom.
Okay i think it would be good to try the custom rom
So i am gonna try that and see what happens

As I know, if you download an official firmware of samsung from sammobile, you can downgrade/upgrade your firmware without rooting, just flash via odin. Maybe you can uninstall KNOX first before downgrading, open KNOX mode and press menu and click uninstall KNOX. I hope this helps. Good Luck

[Q] A sudden bootloop, with a weird return!

Hello!
Today I had a really weird situation with my Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo !
I put the phone on the charger as usual, then went to sleep.... Only to wake up on the boot intro sound of my device several times!
The only obvious reason for this situation is probably just putting my phone on the charger!
I tried to reboot several times, removed the battery and waited for a while, but in vain! Sometimes I had the logo screen, very slow one with a stuttering audio, sometimes not.
I tried to flash stock Kitkat firmware 4.4.4 (the same Hong Kong one I was using already)... No change!
I couldn't boot properly into recovery till I decided to flash TWRP and do a full erase of just about everything that could be erased!
The result?? You guessed it... NO CHANGE! Still the same bootloop, while sometimes I could see the launcher before the reboot!
I decided to try to flash the previous firmware that was before the update (4.3 Jellybean, UAE) and send it to the service center, and I just removed everything from the phone: The battery, and all the cards were removed and put aside! However, I found that this will trigger the Knox Warranty flag to 0x1, definitely not the best shape for visiting the service center! :\
After all, I decided to give it one last try to boot before I send it to be serviced just the way it became. To my surprise, I managed to boot successfully and restore almost everything. The only noticeable loss was the Samsung "Over The Horizon" soundtrack! (Got links for this one, please??)
However, all that flashing wasn't for free! I had a change of both firmware statuses to "Custom" after I had a once "Official" firmware tag! To my chances, I didn't trip the Knox Warranty Flag, and I had my device rooted using CF-AutoRoot with Odin!
A few questions here:
1. What the heck is going on?! What caused all of this from the beginning??!! The phone was rooted and working great before that! I even managed to resolve the battery drain and the camera issues for good! (I'll describe my method later )
2. After all that play, how come I didn't trip the Knox flag?! Was it just... luck???!!!!
3. Can I change to the UAE firmware from the Hong Kong one without tripping the Knox flag???!!! I have little problems with the Hong Kong one, despite the fact that I had some crashes and minimal glitches before! As you all know, Android is a glitchy OS, but this one has much less glitches than before.
Thank you for your time. Hope to see your thoughts asap
Question 1: I read similar problem on samsung phone somewhere caused by defective or dirty microUSB connector. Perhaps your several flashing resulted on dislodging of the dirt from the connector thus your reboot problem was resolved.
Question 2: I also flashed 4.3 over kitkat from hongkong rom and the knox was not tripped. Perhaps only rom 4.2 and below will trip the knox?
Question 3. I have done flashing from Hongkong to UAE to Russia no problem with knox.
Good luck!

Thanks a lot!
BTW, which one is better to use of the three firmwares you flashed already?? I have the I9300I with the 1.4 GHz Quadcore CPU and I know that some firmwares are made for the 1.2 GHz edition...

You may have read my experiences with kitkat on a separate post? I am back to 4.3 now.
Anyway the most stable among the 3 is the latest Hongkong kitkat. Some users here suggest Kazak rom but I has heating problems with that...

Hi toohurt,
I have been having this issue as well, it sounds like its a bug with the lollipop update for s5. If you are with verizon, supposedly their latest update fixes the issue, so I would try that first.
I saw some advice on another forum that if the hard reset didnt work, that rebooting the phone about 5 minutes after you take it off the charger can at least help stabilize the battery drain a little. I've also seen that uninstalling Google Fit and then disabling the "S Health" app can help.
As a last resort you can always go back to kit kat.
Hopefully that helps!
