E-257AGNR Android 4.1 Double DIN Head Unit - Android Head-Units

Some of the other threads have become quite a mess. I want to start this one, pertaining specifically to this device.
Here is a link to the device on AliExpress:
aliexpress[dot]om/item/2-din-Android-4-1-car-pc-built-in-car-DVD-GPS-Wifi-Bluetooth-Dual-core/1505304660.html[/url]
These are the specs listed:
1.OS: Android 4.1.1 system
2.CPU: Dual Core 1GHz (whatever that means)
3.Memory: 1GB DDR3
4.Nand Flash :8GB
5.USB 2.0 OTG,HOST interface
I purchased this device today, and will update this thread upon it's arrival. I plan on installing it in my 2004 STI and running TorquePro gauges through a USB ELM257 OBDII cable I already own.
I purchased this device because it's apparently dual core and relatively cheap. I also like the button layout on this unit more than any of the other ones. In the description it claims to have a capacitive touch screen and OBD support built in.

Love to know how this works out for ya!

It''s the same as the unit I have - meaning hardware and software, just a different face
Looking at the listing, I think they have the wrong pictures as the buttons are slightly different compared to the one Peter Chan showed me, but we will see when your unit arrives.
This is the thread with relevant information, I agree that other threads are a mess so I have tried to keep the main post updated with important information. There is also a Wiki page.

Also see Peter Chan's quick video of the unit.

KID52, I really impressed with your knowledge and understanding this products in good details. Thanks for all your sharing and input, its really useful for me in helping to make decision on which product and which shops to purchase, as i have been looking around for few days.
Back to this topic by mcskeezy, have you received the unit yet? i am also inquiring with the seller "EDO on the same product, because same reason as yours, i prefer the buttons layout, i am right hand driver country.
i am actually asking seller to send me a real picture thru chat in aliexpress, the seller is really helpful, and provided many details. So far the details seem like the unit is like the Peter Chan unit, except the face is different like KID52 mentioned. I ask seller is this unit rootable, he mentioned YES. KID52 - would u be able to comment this can be rooted as well?
I attached here the the real picture the seller just send me :

If you take a look at the thread I linked, there is a root guide.
I would interested to know what the seller's instructions are for rooting it though. Perhaps you can ask them for how to root it?

yes, i have ask the seller to provide, he said he will send me the procedure via email after checking with his engineer, he is not familier but he know it can be done. i will share in this forum once i received the procedure.
I found some unit having a slightly different CPU. Could you comment on this : ?
Freescale MX535D vs CPU MST786
Both are having Dual Core Cortex A9
---------- Post added at 03:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:00 PM ----------
More details.. i have been chatting with the seller, again i like to mentioned this seller is very responsive and helpful, answer all my specific questions in great details. Though he is from China Mandarin speaking native, but responses in English is clear and concise.
The back of the unit actually has 2 Female USB, so you could potentially connect a WIFI and 3G dongle at the same time, no USB hub needed.
He will provide root procedure once he has it from his engineer. I have not even order this unit yet !, that why i mentioned he is very helpful.
He even recorded a video in real time and send it to me, i am sharing this video in attachment.
He mentioned majority of these units are having same hardware and software, the variations are at the panel or face plate, so that why we see many different panel or face plate around. But underlying hardware, software, are from same manufacturer.
So i believe i might be pulling the trigger very soon on this unit. In my opinion the video is excellent, i mean the unit. As good as the perter chan video posting.
I think i could not attach video, its 200 MB big. oh this forum even prevented me to provide a link here

The Freescale MX535D came with the older 2.3 units, I think the sellers just did not update the listing. Some listings also state 1.2GHz instead of 1GHz, but really they all seem to come with 1GHz CPUs. Again, pretty much all of this has been discussed in the thread I linked to. It seems fairly pointless having this thread when the hardware and software is the same, just the face is different.
It's odd that unit has 2 USB ports on the rear, I would be interested to know where they are connected to, I thought maybe it didn't have the one on the front, but it does. I've opened up my unit, but cannot see where another USB port would connect to directly.
You can upload the video to YouTube.

Isnt the statusbar icon beside the GPS indicator in the second pic you posted the usb debugging icon in Jelly Bean? Maybe this one isnt locked down as badly....

Unit Received
The unit came in the mail today. I've only had time to unbox it, hook it up to a spare 12V adapter I had lying around and test it out.
The touchscreen is miles beyond the previous model I ordered. It is easily on par with any generic tablet/phone. I've included some photos. The unit backplate does have two female USB ports (on cable extenders). One is labeled "USB" while the other is labeled "3G/WIFI". I'm looking forward to getting more acquainted with this thing once I have some free time.
I accidentally deleted the stock button mappings and then did a factory reset. The normal bluetooth settings are not visible as of yet. Once I've got it rooted I'll be trying to run gauges through Torque pro using either a bluetooth or a wired ELM257 OBDII adapter. I'm leaning more towards the wired version as those bluetooth adapters draw a fair bit of power while the car is off. I've attached some photos.
If anybody had a screenshot of the default button maps on this thing I"d appreciate it.

For example, _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX3MuMqBMfw_ is enough to let most people know that they can copy and paste your link in to the browser's address bar.

Unit works with USB OBDII ELM357 Adapter
So I went ahead and tried the most obvious thing:
1. Installed Torque Pro from the Play store.
2. Plugged in my OBDII adapter to the back USB port on the unit.
3. Set the max baud rate in torque.
4. Voila, unit recognizes the adapter w/o any problems. Shows RMPs, boost, coolant temp, etc.
Attached are a few more pictures... I'll post a link the the OBDII adapter I used. I would highly recommend this method over using a Bluetooth OBDII adapter, much less hassle.
Unfortunately, I had planned on using Subsonic Music streamer to stream my music from my desktop (over wifi tethering to my phone), but it says in the app store that the App is not supported on this device. Not sure why...

Are you able to confirm if the hardware is the same as the 4.1 unit in the thread I linked to? If so, I would advise posting in there from this point forward to keep everything in one place. No need for a separate thread just because the face is different
One way to tell would be to compare the output of the System Info app, instructions below. In fact, the part about a picture of the homescreen would also be relevant if possible.
KID52 said:
Also, for completeness, a log from the System Info app if you can (need to download from market, it is free). You can do that by clicking on System, menu, then export system info.
On top of that, if it's not too much trouble, a photo/screenshot of the default homescreen. I am curious to know if different sellers customize this at all. Roadmaster claim to do so, but so far I have only seen two different styles of homescreens. One that has four large buttons per page, which is present in the older system versions, and the newer one that is a bit more standard having four app icons at the bottom (which cannot be changed), and the rest of the screen left for your own widgets and icons.

This is the same thing with a lot of Chinese headunits. The issue is that the device's fingerprint is not officially supported by Google Play. So, there will be various filters, like Copy Protection, that prevent you to install or even list certain programs from Google Play directly. The easiest way around this is to use another Android Phone or Tablet and to download and install the APK to it then copy it over manually to the head unit to install it. You can use a program like ES File Explorer to click on the APK's icon to initiate the install.
Otherwise, if you do not have another Android device then you'll need to use a combination of Market Helper and AppBrain in order to find and install apps from Google Play. It is sort of a hack but it works.

Or is the use of Torque Pro smartphone dependent?

I received my unit today, and i am sure my unit is the same on that mcskeezy is having, as the picture and description are similar. Indeed 2 USB female at the rear, one saying USB, the other WIFI/3G. I am wondering how you power up the unit at home, i wanted to try in out at home but i don't have a computer PSU lying around, would it be safe to use a AC/DC adapter to power the head unit up? Let me also upload some pics

same system info?

if i could power this toy up, i will confirm the system info right away, and would be able to bring this unit discussion to your another tread, just need to confirm its a same system but different face unit, i can see the rear of the unit is also another different with an additional USB female.
Still searching on good way to power this unit up without the PSU or battery method.

If the hardware is the same (which I am fairly certain it is), then the other thread I mentioned contains details of a USB OBDII adapter than works with Torque on this unit, amongst a lot of other valuable information too.

Using front dashcam with RK3066/RK3188 units???

I just wonder if anyone has setup a front dash camera with RK3066/RF3188 head units. What application do you use to to record video from USB front camera in the background? How do you configure this application to launch automatically on boot and start recording immediately in background?
Thanks.
I have set up some USB cam apps. Right now I'm trying to get composite IN to record, but. So far "CaroO Pro (Dashcam & OBD)" has worked out the best for me. All of the settings you're asking about are easily located and configured in the app. I can have it start with movement/when my car starts/when I tell it to. It also has the option to run in the background. The other feature it has is a floating widget if you like to either see your car information. Or to take you back into the main app. Another nice thing about this app is the it connects to your bluetooth OBD adapter if you have one. Giving you a lot more information if you are looking for that sort of thing. My second choice is "AutoGuard Dash Cam - Blackbox". It does not have as many bells and whistles as CaroO, but it gets the job done. All other apps I have tried have been more of a hassle to use and set up. I would suggest trying free CaroO trial and seeing what you think. I am not sure if this helped at all, but I will be here to answer any other questions if you have them.
Has anyone got this working?
I have an Eonon G2110z head unit running KitKat and am trying to set up a dash cam. I have tried a "video in" camera (which i'd prefer to use) and a usb camera but all the dash cam apps I've tried ( about 10 I think) say they can't find the camera.
Is there any way of telling Android that the video in is where it expects the phone camera to be?

My USB camera works perfect and almost all apps recognize it. It's one of those board cams they usually use with Raspberry Pie/Arduino. It seems for the best results to look for a UVC compliant USB camera. I am not an expert in any way with these standards. But they seem to be highly compatible with Linux/Android due to them only needing to run off of a generic driver like thumb drives/external drives.
As for the video in/AV/RCA type, I still have not figured this one out :/
*A not much help rant that can be ignored: I did get an image to show up from my dash cam using a dumb/convoluted way. But it would always freeze. The flow was: micro HDMI on dash cam to standard HDMI to an HDMI digital to analog RCA converter. I have also tried the 2.5mm AV out on the cam to RCA. I think it was the same result, but now that I write this I want to go try again...
Sorry I am not much help. I hope you get this figured out. If you do, I would be forever thankful if you shared your results
I'm currently using Daily Roads with USB camera usually sold with those headunits. Problem with this apk is that it can't save last recoded file (when you switch ignition off). Can you confirm that carO pro saves last file properly?

Many thanks for this, I'll see if I can grab one of those UVC compliant cameras.
It seems to me that the apps just look for what android presents as the phone camera- maybe the trick is to get android to think that the av is the phone camera?
AV plays perfectly on the screen when I select the video player.
I used the DailyRoads app with a Logitech USB camera with decent success. I had to use another app to auto-launch the DailyRoads app on bootup. The only issue that I had was the camera picture seeming to get too bright or too dark in some situations. Manually stopping and re-recording the video seemed to fix the picture, but this was not ideal.
Since installing my new headunit, I'm going to give some other apps a try to see if the problem lies with software or my camera. Thanks for the suggestion on CaroO, I'll give it a shot.

Sorry for the late reply. I meant to check that night. I tested it twice with car0. Once turning the car off and letting the head unit sleep. Then turning back on right away. And again but let the unit fully power down and boot up. Both times Caro0 saved the videos perfectly fine.

That Caro0 app works well but doesn't "Autoload at start-up".
I've installed a basic app that autoloads Caro0. Autostart - No root
In settings menu it only gives me option to save video to internal memory, Anyone any idea how to change from within the app?.
What USB cameras are everyone using? I want to pickup a cheaper one to test and see if I want to run a dash cam.

I have no problems getting Caro0 to auto start. It'll open the app back up when my unit boots if that was the last screen I left it on. Or I have the setting checked to auto start once I begin to drive. I will have to look where my files are stored. I remember having issues with this too. I'm pretty sure I have them recording to a flash drive now. I will check.

This is the camera I am currently using. I had a friend use their 3D printer to make a case for it. Although, no matter what recording app I use I everything is too dark. It might be just the camera, but I'm looking for a way to make the overall image brighter without being over exposed. I think I'm just going to buy another soon anyways...
Hi guys!
Any luck with AV IN (RCA) video recording from back/rear/reverse camera? I have a Joying rk3188 JY-131 unit but not any look. The device coming with 2 cams, front\DVR is USB with night vision, the rear is analog camera. The front camera is not very good because IR LEDs working continuously and that make the video and picture quality very bad at day light Some suggestions to fix that problem?
I had an android rear view mirror and it can recort simultaneously with front and back cameras. The program is FireEye.apk, i tried to install a different versions at my double din, but no one work.

Hi wigglitz!
Any progress recording the brightness? I just ordered the same cam for the same purpose...
Could you post an image of your cam housing - or even better post the 3d printer file?
I'm using USB and have mine as a front camera (front grill) for curb stops mainly. My car sits low. Using the default DVR app as well. Works beautifully. Found a weatherproof usb cam specifically for it too, since most dvr cams aren't weatherproof. I love it!

Any luck on a dvr function on the composite in yet?

The cam I wanted to use for this kinda died and I gave up searching for a solution after that.
I like the one that carjoying sells. I did not buy from them but have the same model.

It works great to attach to the back of your rear view mirror because of the shape of the body. I have mind there and the wires go up into the trim and you can't even see that it is there.

It works great to attach to the back of your rear view mirror because of the shape of the body. I have mind there and the wires go up into the trim and you can't even see that it is there.

I installed that camera on my pumpkin 5.1 and I lost the audio in the Music app and Pandora. I installed the app IONROAD and that did not work well it keeps crashing because for reason it requires internet to work. I'll try this specific one from Pumpkin to see how it goes. http://www.ebay.com/itm/311374450638?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I connected a Logitech C910 webcam to my head unit instead of the crappy low-res camera that came with the unit.
Now I'm trying to find a decent app that will record in HD and save the files to an external SD card.
Autoboy works great, great video quality, but doesn't give me the option to record to the SD card, therefore it's useless for me.
CaroO doesn't seem to work at all with the C910, it connects to the OBD, but doesn't show the video (failed to initialize)
The stock Car Record app saves to the SD card, and sees the C910, but doesn't record in HD
Any suggestion for an app that will do what I want?

New apple CarPlay usb dongle for android headhunts and tablets.

The above video is my review, i have it working great with my ownice c200 headunit. the usb seems to register that to the iPhone that it is a CarPlay device. the CarPlay UI apparently is stored and sent from the iPhone its self to the usb dongle and then sent to the android app. the app then sends touch and audio commands back to the usb dongle and then to the iPhone.
i can send photos of the internals of the device to any one who wants and a link to the APK.
MOD EDIT: removed email address and mention of selling head units. XDA is not a place to make money!
great !!!

New firmware update allowing the box application to work in the background.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bym9XrdeViekOTF1VWRoaTlkb1E?usp=sharing
First Step: updating the CAR PLAY USB DONGLE
Plug in the car play usb dongle on the PC, copy the "update.bin" file under the root of the dongle, no extra file folder and no any operation, just wait for 5 minutes, it will be quit automatically after updating, then pull off the USB dongle.
Second Step: Uninstall the old version ZBOX softare from the car audio, then intall the new one, then it will be ok to work.(With the new APK in the attachment and follow the manual)

The issue you are experiencing with the zbox having 'stage-fright' has to do with the power requirements of the zbox device. Some USB bus' don't provide enough power (or borderline) so functionality is intermittent. If you use a powered USB hub, that provides additional power to the USB ports, you'll have almost no issues.
I have connected a y USB adapter.
Has anyone tried one of these on a PX3 RK3166 head unit?
I have one but cant get it to work.
It connects to the apk but wont connect to the iphone.
Tried the update to firmware and apk, still no joy.
Not sure if i have a faulty dongle or it's a compatibility issue with these head units.
Alibaba seller suggested not enough power on head units usb?
I have the same problem with one of these.....
I have tried three android units now and I still can’t get them to work....
Android 4.4 it says its connect but the iPhone just shows as not found....
The other two are both 6.0.1 and the zbox just shows connecting all the time!
If any one has any help it would greatfully be received..
Or for that matter any software updates.....
Mine is showing apk: 2.1.0
Zbox versions: 2.1.0
Many thanks and kind regards
Mine works and I have a px3. I updated the device and installed the latest zbox app before I tried it. I would try swapping out cords and making sure they are certified by Apple. The only issue I have with mine is that it cannot be controlled from the steering wheel.

I use a second usb-plug and a y-cable to provide sufficient power to the device.
What do you guys do with regards to phone calls? My phone is obviously paired to the head unit via Bluetooth, so whenever I get a Call, it jumps out of CarPlay/zbox to the Stock phone interface, however the phone still transmits the audio to carplay and not via Bluetooth by default.
How any of you solved that problem?
If you are using CarPlay why do you have Bluetooth paired? Every car I've been in with CarPlay diconnects the phone from Bluetooth.

I have an Eonon GA7157 running a:
CPU: Allwinner R16 1.6GHz Cortex A7 Quad-Core
RAM: SAMSUNG DDR3, 1GB
Storage: 16GB
I have tried App and Firmware 2.x and 3.x. No joy. All I get is "Connecting" when the usb dongle and app is started. It never gets passed this "Connecting..." stage. USB devices like keyboards, mice, USB Flash drives, and even video camera work fine on this headunit. The Zbox Z1 and an OTA tuner don't work for some reason.
I did some more troubleshooting and found out the following: The dongle works perfectly on my PC running Remix. I also tried it on Samsung Table A; on this one, same symptom as the head unit, so I tried using an OTG cable and what do you know, it worked perfectly.
Therefore, I have 2 possible explanations: The headhunt's USB cable needs to be hardwire as OTG or Eonon somehow has decided to block certain type of USB devices that request data asynchronously. Why? I have not clue... I wish I could disable this flag in the OS, but I have not clue where it can be done. My headunit is rooted, so it should be possible in theory.
Hello, could you post pictures of the internals? I'm very curious what's inside the lil dongle. Also: do you still have some of the dongles? haha

ATOTO A6 2710SB No USB connection to Computer

I have tried searching the forums but have been unable to find anything that seems related to this issue. I have purchased an ATOTO A6 Android Head unit for my car. I have read a thread on here of successful rooting for prior versions (being able to connect via the USB "quick charge cable"). Seems as though just recently (Feb 2019) the company has managed to somehow lock out the ability to connect the head unit to a computer. It is equipped with 3 USB ports, one on the front face, one on the back, and one that is a wire "quick charge" cable. All are USB A connectors and all seem to work as OTG capable (have been able to get thumb drives, etc... to work). When connection with the computer (through USB A to USB A cable) there is no reaction from the computer or the head unit. I have emailed the company and that reply is below.
My ultimate question is, would there be any possible way to get to where this setting is to open up the USB ports for computer connection? I have not heard of this situation in the past. Thank you for any information a head of time.
Company E-Mail Reply
"The ATOTO A6 is not like a smartphone, it can not work with computer."
I have same issue... Any resolution?

Their update zip packages do not have any checks in their edify script, so maybe one can downgrade. Also packages are signed with test keys - which is nice...

So if I downgrade I can get it to recognize on a PC? I’m Kinda a noob to the android world. How will the test keys help? When I wrote ATOTO they said the head unit is programmed/ built like an android computer, thus the reason why PC’s don’t recognize it. Was that a deterrent response? I told them it would be beneficial to add that function back and they said they talked to there tech team and are considering it to make it more user friendly. Thank you for response!

Well, the OP says so. IDK, I don't have the device. ATOTO could have disabled connections number of ways...
If test keys have been used, modifying the update.zips or making of your own, if you like, is possible without custom recovery, etc.

I wish I knew how to modify the update.zip or make my own. Being new to the android scene I’m trying to decipher everything still. I know codes written with Linux. I guess I need to do some more research or keep asking around. I appreciate the insight and your time. Thank you

Hizpo Question

Good evening.
Firstly, please excuse my lack of knowledge I’m not very technically minded.
Last year I purchased a Hizpo android head unit for my BMW E90. I’m a new user but the eBay number is 283704208996
More info in the about option
HMI: BMWX1X1010.1.1 18.11.08.13.23
MCU: GS801.151211(86)
MEDIA: MMP.2015.9.16.14.2
NKV: A10.2.0 2018.11.08.0934
I’ve always had a few niggly issues with it that I just left because I didn’t think they could be sorted. But then I found this forum and hopefully one of your clever clogs can help
1. I cannot for the life of me get the DAB to work. I purchased a universal adapter but it just won’t recognise it in. The adapter did come with additional software which I put on an SD card and in the slot to no avail.
2. The SD card only reads picture, audio and video files. It will not find or read any APK files.
3. AppleCarplay dongle. I have one due tomorrow but fear from my lack of DAB working I will encounter a similar issue. The USB port I have is USB2. USB1 doesn’t seem to exist as I only have 1 port. It has power running to it as I can charge my phone off of it and play music from a USB stick. I read the dongle requires additional software installing but how can I if I cannot get the unit to read APKs?
Thank you in advance for any responses.
Stay safe.

Am I wrong in assuming the UIS8581a (sc9863a) is an FYT head unit?

Hi,
I'm sorry if this is the wrong place, but I've been scouring these forums trying to solve my 10.25 8/128 SPRD 8581a problem. The only thing I really want to do, is attach an OBD2 reader for torque. I have a 2014 F22 BMW, and DeepObd can read from my wifi enet adapter, but torque cannot! I'd prefer to have a USB adapter, and it shows the option of auto opening torque, and I can select the adapter, but it never connects!
I've downloaded several scripts and apps for this platform, and none of the work, and say it's not an FYT unit, but everything I've seen in countless forum posts, is that it should be? I hope someone can help me out, I'm at my wits end.

I haven't seen this device type, looks like an odd ball

It's not a FYT but it's a genuine Android 12 on SDK 31. I haven't seen that either yet.

That's why I'm so confused as well! I thought they were all fake android 10, so this is extremely weird. There's a 1.6gb update.zip in the head unit, should I upload it so you guys can check it out?

Ok
Post a link to where you bought it, at least we can compare the features to an FYT. With the known issues of the FYT and the MCTD it would be useful to compare a 3rd option for the next upgrade or faulty unit replacement. For now this could be moved to the Android General section or once you have the link start a new thread.

Looks like their 12.3" screen is used on just a few selected models like BMW and customised, for my Subaru its a bog standard FYT they supply. Pity as I doubt they will have an incentive to cover the FYT standard offering.

Damn shame. All I want is for torque to show my gauges. It's so frustrating that it recognizes the USB OBD2 scanner, but it refuses to connect. I'm able to set it in host mode. My enet wifi adapter only works in one app, which of course isn't torque. Guess I'm going to attempt some adb commands. It says it's got Bluetooth 5.0, but of course it only broadcasts its own name.
No much help for you possibly but I bought a cheap USB OBD unit, it works with my FYT but only after using a cable with an OTG enabled phone adapter added on the end, I then needed to add another adaptor micro USB to a full USB male plug so it would plug into the FYT. Until the OTG adapter was added I could connect using Torque Pro but could not read any custom PID's. So worth a try and adding OTG to your cable as a stab in the dark.
Torque Pro say you need OTG for it to connect properly to a USB OBD2.

Well, getting into recovery was pretty easy through adb, I just have no clue what to do with it, lol.

What's funny is that it says it's rooted already. I can send command and get SU instantly over wifi adb when I enable USB debugging. I can even get into fastboot/recovery no problem, I just don't know what to do after that. I pulled some config files from the unit about the bluetooth, and I'm 99% sure it can be edited to link with a bluetooth OBD, you just have to edit the address of your paired phone to the OBD in the config. I'll put it up here to show what I mean. I pulled these from data/com.autochips.bluetooth. I have gotten an ELM327 usb to hookup to USB 2 on the HU, and it keeps its connection, I made a thread about it.
