[Q] How to remove Non-HLOS - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I'm terrible stuck, and hope somebody can help me. Recently i wiped and then installed 4.4 Google Edition on my i9505. Everything worked, except extremely poor wifi. I then read that I might try updating my phone modem (to I9505_XXUEMK8_MODEM), including a pacth NON.HLOS. However, after this, The phone(dialer) chrases, Bluetooth doen not work, and neither does anything that inlcudes sound (ringtones, alarms, etc). The rest of the phone works flawless - and I DO have great wifi reception
Anybody got any suggestions?

I have the same problem.
I flashed an Australian Telstra i9505 which previously had baseband I9505DVUAMD8
with MKE_modems_GSM_LTE.tar.md5 (I9505XXUEMKE and I9505XXUEMKE-WiFi-FIX)
Looking for a way to get rid of NON-HLOS.bin (wifi fix) or at least revert back to whatever it was before. As the phone (dialer) worked before I used the wifi fix.

Fixed the issue. Stock rom has original NON-HLOS.bin file.
---
1. Download the stock rom your carrier is using (for me it's the Telstra stock rom)
2. Use philz touch as your custom recovery
3. Do a full wipe (dalvik, cache partition and clean rom install)
4. Use odin in download mode and stock rom via PDA

I have the exact same problem.I tried to download a stock rom and flash the non-hlos.bin included but nothing changed. I doubt I need to flash entire firmware (I don't want the new bootloader).
UPDATE OK for anyone having the same issue I solved it by flashing the NON-HLOS.bin from a stock 4.2.2 ROM I had still on my computer (I9505XXUBMEA). You can extract just this file and flash it via ODIN without affecting your bootloader and stuff

Hi there Let's make it easy for you boot into download mode and if you have an entry: Knox Warranty Void then you are having the new bootloader. So you need to Flash the latest Wifi Fix from djembey thread. By flashing a Wrong LTE modems will break your sound if you have an oldbootloader. Have a nice day.

I really don't get it but after flashing a stock 4.4 ROM my wifi stopped working (couldn't enable it).
So i did some searching (found this thread and some others) and they stated that you could fix this by (re)flashing the modem.bin and non-hlos.bin that comes with the ROM you flashed in the first place.
I found this silly in the first place, as i could see that those files were flashed too, but i did it anyways.
Guess what happened... Wi-Fi was (and is still) fixed!
Happy as i am i still wonder why flashing the complete ROM (that had those files in it) wasn't enough to fix wifi.

Possibly because you simply rebooted into download mode, instead of turning phone completely off and booting up into download mode and then flashing stock ROM?
If you don't turn phone off completely before entering download mode sometimes modem doesn't flash properly.
If you did turn phone off, then boot into download and then flash ROM I have no idea! Lol

Mobile Odin Pro Fails?

Hi,
I got the N7100 on launch day, and rooted using CWM, leaving my phone with a 'custom' recovery, which is noted on the download boot mode.
Now that triangleaway supports the N7100 I thought I would try and get it less dodgy looking which still rooted.
When I ran triangle away, it warned that a custom bootloader / recovery might leave the counter on 1 even after away'ing the triangle...
So I thought I would use mobile Odin Pro to flash stock rom, injecting SU and mobile odin (as i did many times on my note 1).
This failed (using rom N7100XXALJ1_N7100OXXALJ1_BTU) - it verified the MD5 ok, and rebooted into a screen ive never seen before, containing a large blue Android figure with a lightening bolt on his chest. I personally thought he looked a little unhappy as well...
Anyway, first time this happened, i used desktop odin to do a full flash, which fixed it (but increased my custom counter more since I rerooted with CWM+root).
Second time it happened, i fixed it by just re-flashing CWM.
Anyone else had success with Mobile Odin on the N7100 ??? do you think it was the CWM install that it didnt like ?
Im unsure how to flash just the recovery, and am a bit confused between the relationship between the boot image and the recovery one... i wouldnt have expected the recovery image to affect normal boot, but it does.
George
UPDATE - The blue android is actually the mobile odin pro logo... gonna try again and be a little more patient...
...you....fool
Left it 10 mins, and still stuck on blue android screen... gonna try flashing from sd card rather than internal card in case its that...
luckly reflashing cwm6-root-note2.tar from odin fixes it...
Also tried flashing from external sd, and that also failed.
Does anyone know how Chainfire likes issues to be reported?
thanks
George
You can get answer your some question here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1930418
Is that blue android screen not doing anything at all?
I was the one who tested this app prior to its release (on behalf of chainfire who didn't have the phone at that time), I flashed from internal and external without issue.
What is it your flashing exactly? Your not listing it as a OTA/Update.zip are you?
Try to delete the Mobile Odin file off the root of your sd card and open the app again, it will then re-download the files it needs, try it then.
A few other users have reported the exact same problem, and I am pretty sure it will be related to the problem of Triangle Away not always booting up.
Something fishy is still going on with recoveries, and we're not sure what. I can't replicate the problem on my device - at all - so I can't fix it either.
Maybe it has something to do with bootloader version? It seems some people/firmwares have different bootloaders than others and can cause various problems.
What I find strangest is that the Mobile ODIN logo does show up ... that's just weird. Can you use the attached version of Mobile ODIN (its an older version that does not support the Note2) to create a dump file for your device, so I can compare it with the dump files from working devices? It may offer a clue.
EDIT: Download removed, dump made and received.
Dumping...
Hi Chainfire,
Thank you for the response im impressed by your commitment to making our devices better ...
Im doing a dump now [fnarr fnarr] and will make it available to you as soon as its done.
I presume it will be quite large if it takes 30 mins to upload - shall I pm you or email you the dropbox link where i plan to put it?
LennyUK - im flashing what is supposed to be (and in fact is) the latest official rom - i believe its the original shipped rom + an OTA that the UK got. Not sure if it comes from Samsung or its been hacked together from the OTA + original rom. It was downlaoded from sammobile (as i always did with my note 1). Its a tar file (.md5) containing a bunch o f.img files and modem.bin. Im not convinced the N7100 mobile odin flash kernel was corrupted - i would expect CF does a checksum of some sort... ill await his response to my dump.
ps. Why doesnt XDADevelopers email notification work
cheers
George

Dump
Hi,
Here is the dump ...
thanks
George
EDIT: Dump received and removed, thanks.
had the same problem when trying to flash the exchange hack.
used pc odin to upload CWM and this made my phone boot again
Hi, for the record, i tried triangleaway, and ... it booted into it OK, and ran the procedure to reset the counter...
and its worked... I now get
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
im guessing the custom is due to CWM recovery...
cheers

Weirdness. It appears your cache partition is borked (its 10 MB instead of 1.5 GB ?!). This could explain the following problems people have reported:
- Mobile ODIN showing the logo but doing nothing else
- Triangle Away breaking recovery
Try flashing the attached cache file in (desktop!) ODIN, then try Mobile ODIN, Triangle Away, etc again. Problem should be solved then - please do let us know, several people are having this problem.
It's a ZIP file, extract once so you end up with a TAR file, put that in ODIN. If you end up with an IMG file, you extracted twice!
EDIT: Note: after flashing this image you will probably automatically boot into recovery - this is expected, just press power to reboot normally.
Hi,
Thank you... flashed the cache.zip, and it rebooted to the Galaxy Note II screen, then rebooted, over and over again...
so I reflashed the rooter, (cwm6-root-note2.tar) which DOES include flashing the cache, so maybe thats got a broken cache in it ? (the reflash fixed it)
odd...
Ive attached to rooting tar ive been using with the strange (but working...) cache file...
cheers

Yes, I confirm it is definitely the cwm6-root-note2 package that messes up your device. I've checked it out - its the cause for all the problems with Mobile ODIN and Triangle Away. It breaks the cache partition on your phone ( dr.ketan ... )
The reason flashing the fixed cache.tar didn't immediately fix your problems was because you still had a messed up recovery, so you also needed to flash a recovery, which you did now again with the cwm6 package. However, your cache is again broken. So now, *again* apply cachefix, and all should be good, and you should be able to use Mobile ODIN and Triangle Away.

There might be a CWM-less CF-Root coming, indeed.
Hi.
That worked perfectly. I can confirm successful flash via mobile odin once I had fixed recovery and flashed that cache fix.
Many many thanks...
George
That wud be very nice.

Is your phone a locked version or unlocked version. I don't know is this is a matter.
Common problem with ME2
All you have to do is follow these instructions:
1) Flash ME2 once
2) go into the phone > turn WIFI and LTE (data) on and off a few times each
3) Flash ME2 again
4) boot into phone - should be fixed
report back if this works

there is no logical reason WHY this should work. From a mathematical and logical point of view all of the files should be replaced once its flashed once, however, i was told to do this same process when flashing Omega v3.0 ROM (as it is based off ME2) before you attempt to install the ROM and it worked for me.

Flash twice with the test in between
If that fails, i am unsure.

Thanks again, I have download the ME2 file from 6 diffident resource, and I had same problem with them. I flashed the virgin mobile version rom just now, and everything work perfectly again. I guess the problem is my phone is because I purchased it with a contract and it is locked with virgin mobile, , and I think that's the reason why locked phone can not flash ME2, the modem.bin is not supported (just personal guessing). If anyone has the same problem now, I suggest you to download the original carrier stock rom and flash it with Odin, and wait until the proper flash method is found.

[Q] after new baseband no calls

Hey friends,
I really looked everything up, but I could not find anything what helped me with my problem.
I have a Galaxy S4 (GT-i9505) and I wanted to update my modem from MKE to ML6. Because I had some issues with updating it (there still was the MKE at my "Status" after updating to ML6), I tried to double-overwrite it (someone wrote at a forum, that that will solbe the overwriting method). So, I started Odin 3.09 and deleted the "Auto Reboot" option. After the first flashing, I took out the battery and replaced it again. Then I did a secound modem flashing. The result was: There was still the MKE modem AND I cannot call anyone. Everytime I try to call someone and I click the call button, my Galaxy seems to crash. The screen is getting black and I have to shut it down by holding the power button for several secounds. Of course, I already tried out other modems (like to MKE modem again and MJ8), but the problem still exists.
Could anybody please help me!
Thanks,
Robert
Have you tried changing rom + modem? you cannot just randomly try modems with a certain rom as some will work others not.

it seems that your doing in a wrong way mate Try this , Turn OFF your Phone Manually (Wait about 5 sec) Now press and hold Power+VolumeDown in order to reach Download mode. Open odin select PHONE/CP (Find the modem you download) Connect the cables (check to see if it shows added on top/or should be a blue?Notsure or wait atleast 10 sec) then click start ,once done , remove the cable. and after done rebooting go to you phone setting>More>Device info and check if your baseband version change. have a nice day.

Had the same thing yesterday, tried all sorts of modems, with no avail.
Ended up flashing a stock rooted Rom (MGA), flashing a custom recovery and restored a Nandroid. Forgot that flashing a complete stock Rom usually also wipes the internal SD so that was a bit of a hassle.
Now, running a new Rom again, with Wifi, sound and being able to make/receive calls again. Easiest fix also: flash a (compatible) stock Rom :good:

Thank you mate. I also found (5 sec before I read your post) this post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46969768&postcount=2
So, everything works now. The short version for other guys with the problems is:
- flash stock rom via Odin (PDA)
- you can find the stock rom for your country at sammobile.com
- also use the "pit-file" of the linked post (but I don't know, what the pit-file is changing?!)
optional:
- re-root your device again, because now it is not rooted
- new custom rom
Thanks for every help!!!

Try flashing ML6 Firmware and ML6 Modem (and Wi-Fi fix if needed), had the same issue but after doing so it's fixed.
Occured 1 time again, did a cache wipe didn't occur in 2days now.

Except flashing the Wifi Fix was the thing I did to ruin it all. Don't flash a "new" Wifi fix using an old bootloader. You will lose sound/being able to make calls. It's the thing that messed it all up over here.

It can be that our problems were different but produced the same problem.. I'm not a dev nor do I understand everything about Android.
I can be wrong, but that's how I fixed my phone. Just trying to help

hmm - shouldn't really be a problem if you flashed stock, but broken wifi is a symptom reported when flashing old modem on new bootloader, if you have new stock sammy 4.4 then you will surely have new bootloader (check though by putting your phone into download mode and then check for KNOX references - if you got them you got new bootloader, if no then you are on the old one)
Click on the link in my sig for modem - that will take you to a thread that has all the newest modems - have a look through the most recent last 3-4 pages and you will find packages for modems for new bootloader, flash one of these and see what happens - BTW you need to flash in odin with 'reboot' unchecked, then when its finished power off your phone manually then put back into download mode and flash again, then repeat the procedure but this time tick 'reboot' and that should be done. BTW - the tar file goes into 'phone' not csc. You may need to unzip the modem package to get the tar file.
Let us know how you got on

ok just to be sure and not bricking my phone..
i went into download mode and it says:
odin mode
product name gt-i9505
current binary custom
system status official
knox kernel lock 0x0
knox warranty void 0x1csb-config-lsb 0x30
write protection enabled
eMMC burst mode enabled
now if i understood right, i have to download
Wifi fix/NON-HLOS - I9505_XXUFNB8_WiFi_FIX
and flash it with odin with the instruction above....
is that correct?
i also found XXUFNB8.... should i rather use this one?

you are on the new bootloader so you can flash the complete package - it has everything in it all in one package! - you won't brick your phone even if you flash the wrong modem, that is unless you did some thing real dumb like flash i9500 modem and even then I think its recoverable not that I suggest you try!!
depends where you are in the world - I used NB8 and it worked well for me in the UK - I'm on NB9 now and that seems nice also.
so to be clear flash this:
Combined package
For NewBootloader
GSM_Modem_XXUFNB8_and_LTE_Modem_XXUFNB8

hey guys, thank you!!!
the Wi-Fi is working again.
Nonetheless i still have one problem remaining, which i thought it would have been fixed as well.
but, when GPS is turned on, it tries to find the GPS position and the icon on the status bar continues appearing and disappearing permanently (every half of a second).
Beside the fact that it is really annoying having this icon flashing all the time it also causes the display to freeze.
Especially when scrolling from top to the bottom to open the notification area.
It sometimes also lets the system crush completely.
any idea what this could be?
thanks for your effort so far.

hmmm......... thats not right!
Suggest you find a stock sammy ROM and flash anew in odin - then root using cf root, then flash recovery - (TWRP is very good :good then go into recovery and wipe cache, dalvik, system and data - reboot and see what happens on nice new shiny sammy stock - if all is good pick the ROM/kernel you want (if you want) and go back to odin to reflash modem.
The only other thing I can think is that you have an app that is messing with gps?? Do the above though and you should be golden :good:
EDIT: don't wipe system unless you planning flashing a different ROM through recovery!

Hi, right way to flash the stock Samsung package, but after flashing a custom recovery, do not wipe system. There's no ROM after that so phone will not boot. And the newest modem is integrated in the stock package, so no need to flash it again.
And another advice: NEVER use Kies to update your phone. It has bricked 3 of mines.:cyclops:

Oops, well spotted! Yes, don't wipe system unless you have another ROM to flash through recovery. 3 phones bricked from kies huh? I never used it SVD don't think I ever will lol. Good old Sammy stock stuff, tbh that's why I steer well clear of anything stock Sammy unless absolutely necessary and last resort - I look at the farce they have made by forcing us to accept Knox pox!

my thought was to go into recovery mode and wipe everything and start from beginning in order to exclude that it could depends on some wrong settings or any software already installed....
I updated to 4.4.2 using Mobile Odin and my wifi was borked too.
I did notice after the update that there was a mismatch between my Baseband version (still the old 4.3 XXUEMKE) and the Build number XXUFNB8, and I recall seeing some message during the flashing process that security had blocked the kernel update and Triangle Away might help solve it.
I therefore ran Triangle Away to reset my flash counter, and then used Mobile Odin to have a second go at flashing just the Kernel, Recovery and Modem parts.
This was successful and I now have matching Baseband and Build, both XXUFNB8.
And my wifi now works again...
ok.. after making a factory reset wifi and gps are working fine again.
guess there was some missconfigured third party app...
but now, with a fresh system i do not understand why i am not able to assign a PIN for my lockscreen...
everything is greyed out except PIN and Password.
but even though setting up a PIN, the screen lock is always set to use Swipe......
damn, i shouldnt have updated to 4.4.2.... until now.. only problems with this new build....

Try slimkat 3.2 from here http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/downloads/dlsearch/viewcategory/909-jfltexx remember to download gapps and flash after you have flashed ROM. You won't be disappointed

hey thanks for your suggestion. but i want to keep using the stock rom. sufficent for my needs....
anyway.. finally i was able to get everything working after flashing the rom with odin again.

hmm - shouldn't really be a problem if you flashed stock, but broken wifi is a symptom reported when flashing old modem on new bootloader, if you have new stock sammy 4.4 then you will surely have new bootloader (check though by putting your phone into download mode and then check for KNOX references - if you got them you got new bootloader, if no then you are on the old one)

[fixed] NC1 - Bluetooth won't start, logcat provided, phone calling issue too

I've never been good at pulling and producing logcats, and I'm using some Logcat Extreme app I found on the Play Store, so I'm not sure if this is going to help at all.... here's the background on the subject:
I just went from NB1 to NC1 by doing a full Odin of stock NB1, then flashing the NC1 update file, then got root and recovery from these steps here, all went very smoothly. The reason I did this was to fix a problem I've been having with placing and receiving calls - for some reason, my phone will make a call one minute and then not make one the next, usually connecting to whoever it is I'm calling, but no audio is produced at all. I use Bluetooth in the car, but that isn't the issue, it happened regardless of where I was.
So, I figured something was screwed up in the ROM, and since I don't have the time to reinstall everything even with using Titanium Backup as help, I got NC1 on the phone and then restored my data using Safestrap recovery from NB1 - while I'm very aware that I most likely brought my problem with me, I do believe that restoring data from TiBU would likely do the same thing, and I hate to be so busy right now that I can't even get my phone working by starting clean and then adding back everything one by one in order to ensure working condition, I just have to fix the problem on the back end of this right now....
So now that my phone is on NC1, calls are working okay right now (that may change) but the Bluetooth module will not come on at all. I turn it on, it turns it right off. I can't figure it out and don't even want to pretend I know what I'm doing with reading logcats, so I've attached it below. It contains a filtered logcat using the term "Bluetooth" as a filter. If someone can point me in the right direction, that would be great and I really appreciate it!
EDIT - I have wiped the ROM and installed everything from TiBU, everything works as normal now, just wish I didn't have to set my phone all back up from scratch again, I like using the restore data function of recovery, while not foolproof, it works great to quickly change ROMs and put all the data back on the phone as before
What baseband do you have or did you flash a modem?

I did flash a modem, previous to getting NC1, I flashed the NC1 baseband.
Sounds like either something got restored from System data incorrectly or a hardware issue. The only way to confirm is the flash back to oute stock and see if it all works correctly. Then do not restore data from previous ROM and see if it works. Then use Tibu and restore one app at a time and check if it is/is not working.
Also the flash able modems do not contain the non-hlos.bin, so possibly if you have the NC1 or NB1 non-hlos.bin installed from flashing the stock rom, then flashing the modem that ONLY contains the modem.bin it may be a conflict? I do not recall that issue happening on previous firmwares that HAD TO use the matching modem.bin and non-hlos.bin but maybe Sammy did something in the newest releases?
I have used ALL the modems in my thread with no issues. But I am STILL on MDB boot loader, never flashed a non-hlos.bin, and ONLY flashed the modem.bin. I have not had ANY issues at all on any like you describe.

I also have yet to flash non-hlos.bin with any modem.... only modem.bin. I used odin pc 3.07, uncheck the auto reboot, flash the modem, reboot back to download mode, flash the modem again and it has always been good to go.
If it was me, I would download the moden again, check the md5 to ensure the download is good and flash it twice... if that doesn't work.. I would go back to stock..... typically, if I flash a rom, I skip trying to restore anything.... I just let the apps redownload...
Downloaded again, checked MD5, flashed three times (I'm not flashing through Odin, just using the ones RR provided through Safestrap), and still no Bluetooth....
Sounding more and more like I'm going to have to start from scratch instead of dealing with it here, and if I have to do this now and get a new phone in the next few months (come ON Sammy, hurry up with the S5 Prime / Galaxy F / Galaxy Alpha already!), I'm gonna be pissed!

I don't follow Safestrap too much but don't you have to flash a certain module to get it to work correctly? Again I am not up on Safestrap but I know I have seen a module talked about

I have seen something about that too, but like you, I don't know enough about it.... I thought for a modem file, I don't need that, but I've been wrong before!
