[Q] Where to buy one that works in my country? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, dear XDA citizens.
I had been a happy user of my HTC Desire since July 2010 when I bought it. Unfortunately, it recently started randomly losing signal, with the same ROM version I’ve been using for a while, so that means it’s time for an upgrade.
The problem I find with current options, it’s that there are no longer phones anywhere!!! More specifically, I can only see 5"+ phablets (don’t call them phones, please, at that size they no longer start being just that), which are really not what I want. I want something I can comfortably hold in one hand when vertical, that is, 4.3" minimum, 4.7" maximum... or at least that’s what I thought, until I heard of the LG G2 one-hand operations option. I’m not sure yet this option is available to AOSP or any ROM that might currently be developed for the phone, but it makes a whole difference for me, so much that it makes me skip my self-imposed maximum-screen-size ban. You’ve gotta hand it to LG, they understand exactly this predicament.
As for other features, I’d like it with LTE; my operator in Colombia says they support Band 4 - AWS, and 1900MHz for HSPA+. I’ve been away quite a while, so I’m no longer savvy, but I’ve read some articles about LTE for my operator, and while they say AWS, they also say, for example, they acquired the 1700MHz/2100MHz spectrum, or that the Nokia Lumia 920 (model RM-820 only) works. Those are some details that perhaps can help you help me assert if my choice is right. Oh, 16GB or 32GB is alright for me. Never used more than 6GB myself.
Question is: do you know where can I buy one that fits those specifications? Please paste links that you trust and recommend. It doesn’t matter if I have to “import” it, since I have relatives living in United States which luckyly will come by new year’s eve, so hopefully I can just pay the phone itself and be done with it.
I think that’d be all.
Thanks again for your support!

My international D802 doesn't support band 4 as I read the box , see the attached photo.

Oh, man, I knew it.
Looks like I need a U.S.A. AT&T-compatible phone, which are the ones I see share the 1700/2100 frecuencies. Bummer. Question, for those in United States: can I buy an AT&T-bands-compatible phone without an actual plan? In Amazon looks like I can, but I want to be sure.
Thanks for the information!
PS: The company says something like:
HSPA+, 23/10/2011, Tigo commercially launched 4G service using HSPA+, with 4 Mbps average speed at 1900 Mhz band...

Since I would at least have HDSPA+, although it was implemented two years ago already, according to that, do you think I would still be able to squeeze the phone value two years from now at least? Thanks!

T-Mobile eye Long Term HSPA Evolution for 650Mbps 4G networks!!! Backward Compatible

Sure, HSPA+ is all the rage right now for T-Mobile, but what about the future? While HSPA+ can reach 42Mbps, what will T-Mobile do when LTE starts to really take off? As always, though, T-Mobile has us covered. Today T-Mobile announce a partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks to help deliver Long Term HSPA Evolution, or LTHE. We are talking speeds of 650 Mbps that could be ready by 2013, theoretically. Here I thought my HSPA+ speeds were doing the trick, not so much anymore. One of the better parts of this development is backward compatibility, so you shouldn’t need new hardware like what those other two carriers make you purchase. There are a bunch of other (really boring) facts about LTHE, but you can read those your self.

Everyome else will be on LTE. They will be in the future what CDMA is in the world today.
I'm plannimg a switch to Verizon when they launch an LTE WP7 device.

Its only backwards compatible in the sense that the Vibrant works, but doesn't support HSPA+. So in the future, the vibrant would still work on the network, and would benefit from having a larger backbone fed to each cell tower to support those speeds(ie more bandwidth means closer to max speed for each device currently on the network), but wouldn't be able to reach those speeds.
But I think its a good stratage because it does continue to make use of the current technology(ie saves money on having to buy new hardware) and it gives manufactures time to improve LTE radios so they dont suck so much(Think battery life and Verizon's problems with their usb modems that fail to switch back to LTE after going to 3g). LTE is still in its own first gen hardware, and so comes all those problems of power and size. In time the radios will be improved upon.
Also dont forget LTE isnt officially '4G', LTE Advanced(which I think isnt even finalized) is. So while Tmo squeezes as much juice as it can out of HSPA, on the side they are looking into LTE and by the time they are ready to roll it out, would be able to take advantage of updates to LTE that only time can make.

hardware versions?

there's one guy on the internet who claims he can get ATT 3G AND TMO 3G by fixing the correct bands in EM.
link: http://mobilitydigest.com/dell-venu...en-away-might-already-be-compatible-with-att/
read the last comment.
regardles whether he's hallucinating or not, i begin to wonder if there's a range of hardware versions floating around.
so here's my phone. in the "about" section the hardware revision number is 112.576.2.0, and in EM the HW version is 2.1.2.0. originally a TMO phone.
i assume ATT version would have different numbers. is there a third or 4th config?
I guess you didn't read the entire article:
[Update:] Thanks to Benjamin Ries’ comment we have discovered and verified that the Venue Pro does not have pentaband support. The option exists in the Engineering Menu, but the hardware is not there to support it. Changing the settings allows you to disable select bands but if you allow for a band that is not supported by the hardware, nothing changes.

i did. please note that the last comment is much much newer than anything else on that page.
If the VPro is anything like the V/Streak5 it's just a display checkbox and not an actual usable checkbox.
The S5/V has hidden an emlist app that displays supported bands with checkboxes, the checkboxes only show what's supported, you can click them but they do nothing.
The S5/V is also split into AWS/US/EU models (the V has no EU model though)
The V and VPro are clearly nearly hardware identical, they both have AWS and US models and pretty much the same internals (sans the slide out kb)
The S5/V cant be converted between the various sub-models, likely it's the same for the VP.
If what he says is so easy to replicate why hasnt it been done before/sooner? It sounds like a trivial mod to do.
The logic being: all dell mobiles are unbranded physically, they really have no reason to artifically create multiple models and have to stock them seperately. Though the counterpoint is samsung releases dozens of near identical variations of galaxies
ah, yes, if venue and venue pro share the same internals, the android crowd would've rooted the venue and got all they wanted to know about the band support. the reason to my original post is to find out if all DVPs are indeed the same hardware, with different bands enabled/disabled. given that dell seem to have used the same internals in venue and venue pro, it's pretty likely that they are.
in the context of the webpage above, i have no reason to believe one comment over another. so i'd rather ask.
re:samsung galaxy vs venue pro, the galaxy is selling on a different order of magnitude, so i guess samsung can afford to create different versions yet justify the cost of tooling.
EMlist is a hidden service thing on the S5/V too, you dont need to root but they're normally hidden.

That's what the android version of emlist (or rather one of it's sub menus) looks like, I assume the confusion is over the WP7 one?
If you click those on the android version they do nothing, it's just to show what bands that specific submodel can do.

4g yes or no

Dear customer
.We are emailing to inform you that we will have the WHITE Galaxy Note II in stock later on*today*and will be dispatching orders placed for that model on Monday. We realise that you have ordered the TITANIUM model but thought we should ask you if you wanted to change to white as we are not expecting the titanium version until week commencing October 10th.Also, we have learned that the SIM free stock is not 4G capable, only 3G capable so if you wish to cancel your order for that reason then please let us know
No 4g do we really need 4g in uk as it isnt out yet but when it is the phone is not compatible what do u guys think

Well, I'm not in the UK, but I have lived my entire Mobile life without 4G / LTE. I've streamed netflix just fine, pandora or other music, downloaded podcasts, everything just fine. So do you "need" it? I don't think so. But I think extra bandwidth is always a good thing.
Btw, my average download speed was 1.6 mbps, sometimes higher, others lower.
Don't know if that helps any, good luck in your decision!
You only need 4G when you have poor 3G in you country/area.

4g is comming to ee
yay I'm now a member.
LTE is WAY faster than HSPA+ even at 21Mbps due to its low latency. Please do not say "3G" is sufficient as I was so wrong to think that. Downloading ROMs in 15 minutes is a freaking blessing.

AWS Capable?

I've tried to look this up however so far I've seen mixed results.
Is the Verizon variant of the LG G2 AWS able to utilize the AWS spectrum which Verizon is beginning to activate across the USA?
I am trying to find out as well. Specs for the VZW version do not say this device supports band 4 which is where VZW has their AWS spectrum.
I have a family member who works in VZW and he's going to have his"Device Guy" check and let me know.
It may have it, since the GSM model does, and the suspected Nexus 5 passed through FCC with support for band 4, even though it didn't have 7 (VZW LTE)

If phonescoop is correct, it says it does have the ban IV 1700 just like the note 3 and the S4 have.

Yea, I saw that as well however it's the only website that mentions this. Even the specs on Verizon's website don't mention anything....
Is there a way to check the LTE bands on a phone via an app, (secret) menu or something?
from what I read is only those that are in the AWS area's like new york can check to find out. its the method the signal of the phone connects to the AWS tower. one guy posted that on his iphone that it changing as in the picture provided but I am not sure if about phone will give that level of detail about connection with a tower. see image

Radio/4g problem? or not?

Alright, hey guys, i've stumbled upon something i'm curious about..
i just got my N9005 (UGNG1 uk unlocked version)
my old phone was a s2 skyrocket, and my old phone had 4g and it worked fine on straight talk in my area,
now knowing that there is straight talk 4 g in my area getting my new phone it doesn't seem to get 4g,
only H/H+ it seems odd to me that a phone by the same manufacturer wouldn't get the same service in
the same area, the note 3 seems to be capable of running both bands that my skyrocket had.
(band 17/700 band 4/1700-2100) why is it that i'm not getting nearly the same speed of internet on my note
3 versus my old gal s2 skyrocket?
Can you select LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto) in Network settings > Network Mode?
Have you tried it with a newer SIM? Old SIMcards and new smartphones usually don't go well together.
Yes the sim is brand new it came in a straight talk bring your own phone GSM packet. it's a microsim that came with an adapter for the regular sized sim. Also GSM/WCDMA/LTE is selected it seems to me that the channel its operating on is not the same channel as well i cant access *#2263# to force the channel.
(Edit: one handed opertaion typo not used to that! Lol)

If you are on AT&T (or T-Mobile) - I believe there is a specific thread on that subject but I don't remember anybody fixing that one (but i could be wrong).
It seems like all the phones i buy have some kind of problem with the note 2 it was knoxx not letting me install any custom roms without safestrap that i literally couldnt do anything with.. with the skyrocket it was otterbox availability (apparently they discontinued the model) and the screens were extremely fragile and expensve. I swear the next phone i buy will be a motorola 8900x-2...
Also heres a speedtest of H+ at my house. Its not really even worth complaining about. It just seems odd to me that out of my 2 phones one says 4g and one doesnt. Ill get a screenie of my skyrocket later for comparison, and edit this post to include it if thats possible.
