[Q] Bad screen or damaged flex cable? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just replaced the lcd / digitizer and now only see colored lines. The screen has a vertical line down the middle, usually the left side is brighter and has blue and yellow horizontal lines usually going about halfway down, the right side has pink and yellow lines. After a few seconds the colors dim and the screen ends up grey/white on the left and dark on the right with a darker border around the whole thing. When booting up there is usually a larger patch of solid color that shifts a bit before fading. I can't open it back up until tomorrow or the weekend. Does it sound more like I damaged the flex connector or received a bad screen? By doing some blind touching I can tell via audio that the touch screen is working. Any advice would be appreciated.

just open the device again and check whether you have connected the display(the clamps) properly to the board... i had fixed a clamp loosely and i had the same issue (weird layers of color on screen). i opened the device again, fixed every flex cable perfectly to the board(found one fixed loose) and it worked....

I'm going to assume it was the little LCD flex cable. After removing it and plugging it back in, both the old and new screens are both completely blank.

The new cable fixed the screen issue.

[Fixed] Display color all messed up in horizontal mode.

So, I guess I screwed with something on my phone, but my display now shows "color bleeding" mostly when i open the phone up in horizontal mode. Would this be a problem with the flex cable? if so, just replacing that cable should fix the problem right?
I am able to disassemble the whole phone no problem.
I am experiencing the exact same issue, its bloody annoying.
I'm fairly certain it is the ribbon, but I wouldn't know where to get a new one, so havn't tried swapping it yet.
Did try disassembling and cleaning it out a bit though, no luck

Could you post a picture of what you're talking about?
Sadly enough, I do not have a camera other than the one on my dz... a screenshot wouldn't do anything since it just looks fine.. but it's something with the physical hardware part. I'll see if I can borrow a friend's camera when it happens again, but essentially the red and blue colors look like it's splotched in different parts and sometimes it even "pulsates"
it doesn't do it in vertical mode, but in horizontal mode.. it appears instantly.
Thanks to someone in another post that led me to the amazon link for the ribbon cable.. the phone now has no color bleed. Woohoo!
For those who want the link:

It works great and looks exactly like the original.
I'm experiencing a slight color disfiguration. I traded my girlfriend my phone for a few days and when i got it back, the bottom half has a yellowish tint. Is the flex ribbon the reason why it's like this?
is it the same tint whether or not you're in vertical or horizontal (keyboard open) mode?
if so it might be your flex cable or it might be the actual screen itself.
Yeah, the yellow (and now with blue) tint is in both modes. lower half of both sides (vertical and horizontal)
wait, does the tint change on the screen? as in does the tint stay in the bottom half of the vertical screen and stays in the right half in horizontal? or does it shift so that it goes to the bottom half in horizontal? if it stays in the same physical space in both modes, then it might be the screen itself, but if it shifts.. it's most probably the flex cable.
yeah, it shifts. but now the blue and yellow lines is throughout the screen. initially, i thought it was a ROM thing, so i changed it to see it in a different rom.
sounds like a flex cable problem. I can't guarantee it since it's one of those "replace it and see if it works" deal.

Is screen totaly damaged?

Hi, had my defy about 12 months and it's great but tonight i dropped it and as soon as it hit the floor the noise it made i knew that something bad had happend. The glass and phone itself isn't damaged but about a third of the screen on the right has black, blue, red and white lines going in straight lines from top to bottom and also has a 45 degree line from bottom right corner all the way to where the screen is still "good". Also if i apply preasure to the damaged part the lines flicker and I can see parts of the screen that are otherwise invisible due to the lines. Does any one know if the screen is damaged beyond repair? Or do you think I could fix it in its current state? Any help provided will be most appreciated as I would be sad to see this phone go. I have attached a picture of the screen to help better undertsand.
Bill.

[Q] Vertical line after screen replacement

Had to buy a screen replacement for my Nexus 4.
After the replacement i can see one distinct vertical line to the left. It's purple on white background.
I can also see it in recovery mode, but when i take a screenshot it doesn't show on the picture.
Is this a malfunction of the new screen, or did i mess anything up?
The screen i ordered missed the frame so i had to buy a front frame seperately and glue the screen to this.
I used this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSe1I0MlpLI
everything went well, except one thing; when i connected the flex cable to the frame (check @ 23:19) i removed the little blue transparent plastic sticker, i thought it was a protective sticker cause my screen was new.. (the guide also said i had to remove a sticker if it was new)
but i found out right after it was actually supposed to be there.. i sticked it back on, though i didnt take care to align it 100%,.
This was the only thing i did sloppy..
could this cause the vertical line? think i'm going to open it up again and try set it straight if the line annoys me too much, but does anyone know what the purpose of this little blue sticker is? it looks like plastic so i thought it weird that this should lie between a cable and the frame?
anyone know?
Not sure about the blue sticker but it's either a defective screen, or more likely a badly seated flex cable.
I haven't had to change a screen since my old Nokia n95. That had something similar. Though mine was a line of purple and the backlight would only come on if I squeezed the phone.
Taking the screen back off, removing and reseating the ribbon cable fixed this issue.
I'd say it's likely to be the cable because the colours are sent as rgb values.
In your case if your only getting red and blue to x row on the screen then that will appear as purple.
I'd be less likely to think that it's a screen problem because either the whole row would be black, or there would be specific pixels that would be missing an rgb and not the entire row

[Q] Replaced screen now is red on right side

Cracked screen (video was fully functional, digitizer didn't work) replaced. Upon boot the right half of the screen was full red and the left was black. The"Google" splash screen looked normal, The 4.4 swirling colored dots behaved normally with all colors showing in either half. After boot the screen displayed oddly on the right half, with some edges flickering red, some colors appeared nearly normal. I could go on but I think this is good description.
All other functions work well, including the digitizer.
I reseated the tiny video flex cable and the problem persists.
I ordered another video flex.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Did the video flex fix it?
Fixed!

S8+ screen shadow on edges

Hello,
After I received the latest update which enabled more options like gamma in display settings I've noticed while browsing that on a full screen white background the edges tends to drop somehow a gray shadow.
While I think this is kind of normal because of the edge curvature, looking straight in the center of the phone, the right shadow is somehow more pronounced than the left one.
If I move the phone a bit to the left or turn it few degrees to the left, the right shadow disappears while the left is starting to be pronounced.
Also when I look at the phone horizontal, with the usb connector on the right side, the bottom edge doesn't exhibit any pronounced shadow while the top can be seen. The top shadow is the previously right one.
If I turn it with the usb connector on the left, the bottom shadow is visible while is also the top one. Previously the bottom was not visible.
I was thinking maybe this is how the crystals are aligned like in a tn screen when looking from bellow the center screen the top starts to get darken, but from left to right not top to bottom on s8 plus.
I know it's not a tn screen but still, maybe this technology has a small drawback.
I went in 2 retail shops to check their displayed testing phones.
One of them had a smaller gray shadow on the right side than mine, but had a very faded red shadow on the left side. While the other seemed somehow equal on shadows, I couldn't figure it out better because of the blue neon lights in the store. The best can be seen at home during the night or in moderate day light. Anyway when I put my hands around the screen it seemed to have a bit more shadow on right side but less than mine, but no faded red on left side. Also I noticed that the white was different on all 3 of them, but this is not an issue.
Did someone else can also test this shadow behaviour if it is more pronounced on the right than on the left side and also if it's not visible at the bottom with the usb port at the right while is visible top and bottom with the usb connector on the left ?
Thanks
