Question about 4g - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Simple question. Sometimes my phone says 4G and it seems at that time the data speeds are slow and sometimes it says 4G LTE and the speeds are normal. So my question is what are the differences? The reason why I ask is because I don't move around and the signal keeps changing between the two both with full signals.

I believe when it says 4g it is referring to hspa, which is technically 4g but not as fast as LTE. It all depends which kind of carrier your ROM is for. On the international ROM '4g' refers to LTE and on my Fido GS4 it just says LTE. I might not have clearly answered your question but I hope I shed some light to it. Try doing speed tests to gauge which one is which.

Lte is faster as you already know. 4g is att way disquising hspa+. Which is like 3g. I think you live in an area with weak lte coverage is why its switching back and forth.

Ah that explains it. I did not know 4G meant 3g on att but it makes sense now. I just think I need a new sim card.

[Q] t-mobile nexus 4 wont hold hspa+

Just got my nexus 4 yesterday. Love it. But the phone is jumping wildly between 3g and hspa+ in a service area that my note 2 had no trouble holding a 4g signal. wondering if this is a Sim card issue, or if anyone else is having similar problems?
Yes, that is how its supposed to work. Carrier branded phone just don't show the change in the status bar. It is functioning the exact same way.
Nothing to worry about.
Just a heads up, the N4 doesn't show a H+ logo but just the H.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and make sure your network says HSPAP
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
It's jumping between hspap and umts. Driving me nuts!
It will only switch to HSPAP when needed otherwise it will stay on umts in order to save battery life. No worries this is normal

Your note 2 is doing the exact same thing. All gsm phones do this. It idles on 3g and when data is called it switches to hspa.

T-Mobile makes the icon for both UMTS and HSPA+ the same icon that's why do you not see it change. Google makes the icons the way the network mode is.
That makes sense! Thanks so much for the help.

Hspa+ problem

Hey guys, got my nexus 4 a couple of days ago coming from a galaxy s3, and I notice that I never get h+ like I used to do on my s3,it only gets to H, and the Internet speed of course is slower than it I was on my s3, I'm spending time in the same places I spent before but the speed isn't quite as good, I asume it's because it's only getting Hspa but not hspa+, any idea of why is this happening? Thanks in advance

What ROM are you on?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Depending what ROM you're using. Certain ROMs cant distinguish the difference between H and H+ on the status bar. However, you can manually check via Settings -> About Phone for HSPA+.
I'm using the stock rom, not rooted, I checked and it says HSPA:10 never days HSPA+
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The Nexus 4 is a HSDPA+42 device so you should get similar speeds as the S3 or even better with the Nexus 4 (unless you are talking about the LTE variant on a LTE network ). I don't think the S3 in general EVER showed HSPA+ as those stock devices always showed "3G" or "4G" or "4GLTE"
What kinda difference as we talking here anyways? 10Mbps or 1Mbps? Somewhere in between?
When it's saying HSPA:10 that's only HSPA and when it's idling. When you are actively using data it will show HSPA+:15 which is HSPA+ (21Mbps or 42Mbps depending on your carrier).
The s3 was the international, I'm not from the us, and I haven't measured the speed but I feel that it takes longer to load stuff, and it never shows h+ on top, only H :s, maybe it has something to do with the band of the carrier?

Like the guy above said, check manually in about phone>status to see if you're getting H+ (when you're doing something that needs internet). Also try doing a speed test with both phones and see if the results are the same or similar.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Well I started downloading and app and it said HSPA+:15, but it's weird that it dent say it on top, either way I feel the speed is slower than it was on the s3, I will test it when I get home to see what's going on... But it is DEFINETELY not faster

T-Mobile service question

Seems my phone drops to 3g but when it says its 3g no data transfers when it says h or h+ it transfers data
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
You probably just have ****e service. Restart your phone and see if that clears out your problems.
When not in use, the radio switches from HSPA to UMTS in order to save power. All UMTS/HSPA devices do this, but stock Android devices like the Nexus 4 actually show this transition as a change from H(+) to 3G, instead of hiding it like most handsets which simply continue displaying 4G on the status bar. H(+) will show back up when you start using data and the radio ramps back up from UMTS to HSPA/HSPA+ in order to deliver your data more quickly.
This is standard behavior, unless you're actually having trouble using data, which is a whole different issue.
Seems like it stays on 3g when I need it sometimes. Is there a tweak to quicken then switch. Sometime t takes like ten seconds to swticj

This service is horrible. I hate to leave this phone but this sucks. T-Mobile must have no roaming agreements set up

Are you on their prepaid? if so, then you don't have the roaming agreements hence the bad coverage.

[Q] Get LTE speed on cyanogenmod running on Galaxy Sr

So I have a Galaxy S4 Sgh-i337m (Canadian version) that have a custom recovery(clockwork touch 6) and is rooted. On that phone I have cyanogenmod 10.2 and I've been trying to get an LTE speed without success. I've seen the posts that tell me to change my apn but it haven't work. Currently when I switch data on I either get 4G or H+. I made speed test and the maximum I got is 10MBPS normally it should be around 30 to 75MBPS. So can someone help me get LTE speeds here's a photo of my current APN?
Could be a bunch of issues. Is the network mode set correct? I have noticed at times it is set to 4G to save battery. I have had times after flashing a ROM not connecting to the lte towers until after making a call. Another fix is resetting to default in apn.
Sent from my Nexus 10
Unless they've added an LTE symbol...on CyanogenMod 4G means LTE.
On touchwiz when it displays 4G its pretty much H+, Samsung just likes to make it look better
However you are right...your speed tests aren't lte speeds

When you see 4G on the status bar go to settings >about device>status. Network type should say umts% for 3g, hspda% for hspa+ or lte% for LTE (The % represents a frequency). Then you'll know for sure.

Yes it means that you have lte. The reason why your dl speed is so slow could be your reception or it could be your on wifi

Getting ready for 4G?

HI, the three network in the UK is rolling out 4G this weekend, what rom do I need to flash my nexus 4 with to get it working ???!!....I wan't super fast lol !!!!!!!
I think it's only starting in like 3/4 cities if your lucky enough to live in one of the cities. Also nexus 4 only supports one band on 4g if your also lucky enough for three to be using the supported band.

itll work on the n4 only if its band 4 lte, and no other frequency for lte. and its not about flashing a rom, its about flashing a hybrid radi, having the right apn, and changing the phine info to lte/gsm. there are threads that explain how to do it.
Yes I live in London.....but since updating to the latest 4.3 I can no longer select 4g LTE in the service menu. How would I find out if three is using the correct band !????

for 4.3 the option is in the phone menu, . and you need to ask them what band they are using.
Yes but if I select LTE it just goes back to CDMA ....!? Goes anyone know the three 4G APN details !? What band goes it need to be to work !??? Sorry for all the questions lol

band 4 for lte only. the hybrid radio lets you use lte if band 4 is available.

it goes back because you need to use either the .27 hybrid radio or the .33 hybrid radio. google disabled lte for 4.3, and you cant enable lte in the settings unless you are using one of the hybrid radios.

nice rationalization, but not true. the chip works great, everything works. and since switching over to lte permanently, ive been seeing 6-7 hours screen on time regularly. imagine this, when you download things it takes time for it to finish downloading, especially large files. the slower data speed, the longer it takes. the longer it takes, the more battery is wasted. on lte, i average about 30mbps download speed, so downloads finish in seconds. so less battery is wasted. i download 2gb games from the play store in about 13-18 minutes. the newer lte chips are much better on battety than the old days, better than hspa+, hspa, 3g, and 2g.
How can that be possible ? The LTE chip in the nexus 4 has no antenna or amplifier :/ hmm I'm baffled

Battery life is the same with LTE enabled. My N4 has it enabled my wife hasn't let me to it to her's yet and our battery life is the same, but my data is much faster than her's. I get LTE signal with my N4 in the same places as I do with my Galaxy Tab 2. So I would say it works perfectly fine. Yes I am on T-mobile in case anyone was wondering.
3 UK is going to use LTE band 3 and 20 only, so the nexus 4 will not support it (unless Google is going to release a Nexus 4 LTe version, which is pointless because you should get the Nexus 5 anyway.)
