You can't downgrade because of Samsung's KNOX

Hmm, i don't think the I9500 has KNOX, You could try a Samsung Kies Firmware Upgrade and Initialization, fill in your phone model (GT-I9500), pull out your battery you will see a S/N code/number, fill that in, reboot in download mode and connect to your PC and follow the on-screen Samsung Kies Instructions
YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE SO BACKUP YOUR STORAGE.

Try to update Samsung Kies? Or maybe you got a weird character filled in because of your region keyboard?

You are using the old kies for 4.2.2 and downwards. You need Kies 3 because you are on 4.3. Kies 3 supports all android 4.3 devices

How does Samsung firmware naming schemes go? I am finding it very difficult to find out which firmware is the latest one just by looking at their code. Mine is a 900I and the android build has last few letters/numbers as ANE3. However baseband is only ANE2. The kernel was also built in May 17th, so am i on the latest firmware?

you propably updated to the new version of Kitkat 4.4.2.
The new update had the bandversion I9301IXXUANF4 for me (I updated too) (there is no possible way to root this version as far as i know)
But the not updated version of KitKat 4.4.2 (bandversion for me: I9301IXXUANC6) works with towelroot.
Beside i updated to the new update i still got my phone rooted:
I downloaded the new version of Odin on my pc.
I downloaded the old version from sammobile. (the I9301IXXUANC6 version)
In Odin (launched with admin rights) you click on the PDA (or sometimes AP called) button and select the downloaded firmware version (unpacked)
Next boot your phone in recovery mode (turn it off, then press volume down + home + power button)
Connect your phone to your pc (after that odin should recognize your phone)
Now make sure re-partition is NOT checked in odin !this is very important! and click start (now wait some time until its finished)
Your phone should reboot automatic (if auto reboot is checked in odin) and the old firmware should be on your phone
Now install towelroot and click "make it rain"
Now you should have root!
(Hope this helps. Sorry for my bad english... :crying: )

Well, I hope that there will be a root app for I9301IXXUANF4 soon.
I've got some bad memories of doing anything to my phone with ODIN. App is the only non-destructive way for me.
Does anyone know how much time developer needs to release his updated app after new version of Android?
in download mode do you have trace of knox?
i can't understand if it's only a software knox or a hardware one (efuse) like on the s4
you can enter in download mode by doing:
The phone must be turned off.
Keep pressing and holding ‘Home Button (middle button) + Volume down key + Power Button’ simultaneously until you see a warning message. Now press Volume Up to continue. This will land you into downloading mode.

If you read "knox warranty etc..." there is a hardware-efuse knox

yes al happen with odin . and you need only the firmware from sammobile.com/firmwares/ . the one you need for you country.
no need for any csc, because its al inside the firmware.

I mean, the warranty is on the phone itself, not the operating system on the phone. it doesnt make sense to me that a warranty would expire because the phone upgraded itself.
