Canonical is looking for a technical lead - Ubuntu Touch General

I hope this isn't considered spam, and I won't get paid if someone here gets the job, but it's all about developing low-level things for Ubuntu on phones, especially the new Mir display server. If you're good with OpenGL and other display technologies, I encourage you to apply.

Not what I am looking for but they have a few other positions there as well that is looking interesting. Do you work for Canonical?

silverlight is a microsoft product, if microsoft doesnt choose to make a version for android then you are out of luck. what i would suggest is to vnc into a desktop and then watch the jerky unwatchable video through that =)
Funny, I'm still waiting for silverlight with full drm support for linux. Android was based off of linux. So all I can tell you is keep waiting for microsoft to port it over. BTW, no dev I know is going to touch a microsoft branded software.

Search on the market, there are lots of client + an official one from the VNC team. You install a server on your computer, configure the connection, and that s ok.

Appreciate it did you have any experience before reading that book? It sound like its for users that already have a feel for developing apps but I'm still about to read it and try to figure it out thanks for the suggestion and luck

I highly recommend http://www.commonsware.com
Mark Murphy posts on StackOverflow and the Android Developer discussion every day - I started by buying his book Beginning Android 2 for $39.95 at Barnes and Nobles and then found out that for the same $40 I could get 3 books at commonsware .com and get free updates for a year.

Ubuntu OS

Just saw an article from CNET stating that Ubuntu is creating their own smartphones. I haven't had a chance of reading the article yet posted here:
http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57561644-85/ubuntu-os-smartphones-tapped-for-late-2013/?ttag=fbwp
What are the ideas on this and if it will be usable on our android smartphones. I'm just going to assume that most of the settings will be generally the same. The screenshots alone look enticing enough.

I'm sure it will be for specific phones. Its like running iOS on a nexus device.. It'll have to have heavy modification for it to be even doable.

Not necessarily. The article did state that it would be possible to run Ubuntu OS on entry level phones (low tier devices) Though, I'm not sure how true that is until I see it with my own eyes. Nevertheless, it would be pretty cool to see it running on most Android devices flawlessly; Possibly even the OG EVO.

There is a rumor going around that this may be related:
http://www.htc.com/us/
But some people are thinking its unrelated, that HTC is announcing a phone and not a tablet.
Now this Forums needs to be renamed. Ubuntu for Mobile Devices.
Awesome cant wait....on internet there are rumors about the reveiling of htc...maybe a htc tablet with ubuntu. Time of reveiling is exact the same of the time on the countdown clock.....well see.....

Especially with the dock! It will be a laptop on its own!
If its supposed to be a converged OS, I don't know that it necessarily makes sense to have subcategories for phone and tablet. The forum should probably just be called Ubuntu, with subcategories Ubuntu OS and Ubuntu for Android. It might even make sense to separate it by OS version numbers, since 13.04 is supposed to be the converged touch friendly version of the OS. I guess though it really depends on what the moderators think people will be talking about. App developement, porting, configuring, customizing, driver hacking, etc.
The tablet interface looks like its going to be good, I wonder if it will be available for older Tablet PCs (x86).

Received email from them today, but no apk.
Dear Jolla Launcher tester candidate,
Thank you for your interest in the Jolla Launcher Alpha test program! With over 13 000 requests in, we are positively overwhelmed by all the support from the community.
Although we hugely appreciate all the requests, the number of testers for the Alpha phase is limited to 600. This is to ensure we can handle and act upon all the feedback we receive. If you’ve been selected as one of the first 600 Alpha testers, details will have been sent to you in another email. If not, no worries as the Beta phase is just around the corner and you’ll be invited to be a Jolla Launcher Beta Tester.
Please follow the tag 'jolla-launcher' on together.jolla.com to either report your feedback (if you're in the group) or to follow the progress of the Alpha testing. For the reporting, please stick to together.jolla.com, so that we can better handle all the feedback.
In the meanwhile, keep an eye on more upcoming news on Jolla’s global market expansion - we can't wait to announce that!
Thanks again!
Best Regards,
Jolla Team

Well someone was going to do it sooner or latter. If they really wanted to limit testers, then they should've picked people from their own company and made them sign NDA.
