KitKat 4.4 AOSP Browser v2 [update: it works] - Nexus 5 Themes and Apps

Here is 4.4 AOSP Browser, if you dont like Chrome.
Changelog v2:
pulled from slimkat for nexus 5. its working now but its sadly not old browser from 4.3 but zoom works good now.
Install step:
install works if you follow Ti2's guide
after succesfully Browser installed, then install BookmarksSyncAdapter-blackhand1001.apk for enable sync bookmarks. choose it in your settings enable sync browser and reboot
Ti2 said:
This worked for me:
1. Rename BrowserProviderProxy.apk in /system/app (I just added .bak)
2. Reboot for step 1 to take effect
3. Push Browser.apk to /system/app & set permissions to chmod 644
Don't get all too excited though, it's like they rushed it out - address bar doesn't hide, some advanced setting FC the browser, zooming is crappp & most important to me: it does not have textflow
Click to collapse

Wont install for me.

App not installed

Did you try side loading it?

Has this browser been updated at all. I love the speed at which it works but I feel like chrome is the only browser getting any new features/improvements

New chrome is much better.

Im pushing it to system/app and change its permissions that might work

That's because 4.4 changed the Android's internal "web rendering engine" to the new Chrome one, while in 4.3/4.2 (also if Nexus 7/4/10 comes with preinstalled Chrome) it still was the stock AOSP browser one.
(I think)

update: browser works now with ti2's guide and new browser.apk from slimkat for nexus 5.
enjoy

You can on 4.3 I have done on my nexus 7 unrooted

Is this apk only for 4.3+?

Interestingly enough, even with the Chromium integration into the OS... the AOSP browser is STILL faster than Chrome for Android on Kitkat.

You should also set permissions on the sync file as well.

Interesting I copied the link from my desktop browser. It does work from the desktop but I just noticed that the playstore language is in Germany. I do not think that was the case when I first installed the app. Here is a little cut/paste from the playstore for the app:
Extended Power Menu
MAPPZ Development
- 1 augustus 2013
Tools
Deze app is compatibel met al uw apparaten.
I did not notice that when I posted the reply as I've been using the app with rooted Stock 4.2.2 and just reinstalled from my playstore profile after my OTA 4.3 upgrade. Maybe something changed on the playstore in North America.
When I click on "MAPPZ Development" the Extended Power Menu is no longer listed for that developer.
I have the apk backed up "com.studio.extendedpower-1.apk" but to you I am an untrusted source so suspect you would not want it uploaded. Also there may be a reason the developer had it remove from the playstore for new users.
It was free so if I uploaded I doubt I would be breaking any rules much like the AOSP and Flash apks that are posted on XDA. You could contact the developer and ask about the app.
The Team Blackout Updater app from the play store comes with a small widget button that opens a reboot menu with a reboot to recovery option. I discovered this accidentally, now prefer it to searching for the tiny power button and holding it for just the right amount of time. Do any of the 4.3 roms have the option to add reboot to recovery to the power button menu?

Thank you everyone..
I searched play store and found an app called shutdown menu 2.1
This does what I want and nothing else, which is great.
The suggestion to use terminal is something I will look into.

[4.3/4.4] AppOps | Independent App

Hi guys,
I recompiled AppOps as an independent app from latest AOSP source and it works after making some changes. What this means is that you no longer have to rely on third party apps or tricks/workarounds. This is an independant app, just like any other app you use so you can install it and then use AppOps right from your app drawer!
Download: https://raw.github.com/theblixguy/AppOps/master/apk/AppOps.apk
Flashable ZIP for KitKat 4.4/4.4.1/4.4.2: http://www.mediafire.com/download/qiqst3lg5jld5mk/AppOps_Kitkat_flashable.zip
Source code: https://github.com/theblixguy/AppOps
Installation: Move the apk (DO NOT INSTALL) to the system/priv-app folder and set permissions to 777 and then reboot! Or you can flash the ZIP via recovery which will do everything for you
Note: The app is compatible with Android 4.3 but since I don't have a device with Android 4.3, I haven't been able to test the app on Android 4.3 and Android 4.3 does not have a system/priv-app folder so if you're successfully able to use the app on Android 4.3 after moving it to /system/app folder and setting the permissions to 777 then let me know!
If you guys face any problems then please reply below
Thanks
CHANGELOG:
21/12
-> Updated icon
-> Added about dialog
-> Cleaned up code
-> Added support for Android 4.3
19/12
-> First release
im looking forward to trying this ouut and comparing it with a few other aps...just one thing ...a direct download would be great and 777 permissions??? you mean rw- r-- r--???
Yes 644 are the right permissions for all apps in priv-app
Any chance of making a flash able zip? I use Cyandelta for flashing CM nightlies and it has the ability to tag additional zips for post-install

My app is built using the same code that AppOps uses (plus some of my modifications to make it work independently) so it will work and behave *exactly* like the inbuilt AppOps app. So, if you denied Facebook access to camera using the inbuilt AppOps app then if you run my app, you would see that Facebook is denied access to camera.

How to install the Nexus 5 GEL dialer on your Moto X [ROOT ONLY]

Haven't tried this myself since I'm not rooted but thought I would pass this along.

This isn't GEL. This is just the GEL dialer which allows you to search for businesses within the dialer like the Nexus 5.
And yea, you need to be rooted for this to work.

You're supposed to create a shortcut for the new dialer and make that your new phone icon.
If this happens on your phone, the only solution we found was to use Nova Launcher because it has a feature that allows you to run a specific activity within an app. To set this up:
1. Within Nova Launcher, long-press on the home screen.
2. Choose "Shortcuts"
3. Select "Activities"
4. Find "Google Dialer" in the list, then tap to open it up, and select "Phone" (use the first one in the list)
This will put a shortcut to the dialer on your home screen. At this stage, you can use this to access Google Dialer. It's not the cleanest solution, but it does work.

Click to collapse
If you're not running a custom launcher like Nova, you can also use this app to create the shortcut:

No prob. Glad you got it working.
So I installed the APK and added a shortcut Nova Launcher and I can search for businesses and stuff just fine, but when I try to make a call in the dialer it crashes. I downloaded the apk from 2 different mirrors so that isn't the issue. I would try to flash the zip but I don't have the slightest idea how to do that.

Did you follow these steps?
2. Flash the ZIP file in a custom recovery, or copy the APK file directly into /system/priv-app.
3. If you opted to move the APK file manually, you'll need to set the permissions on the APK to 644 after moving it into its proper folder. Do this either through your file manager app or via a shell.
4. Reboot your phone.

Is there any way around if you don't have root?
Self promotion aside, I created a thread for this a while back. This dialer works flawlessly without the need for nova or an activity launcher.
