[Q] Are USB 2.0/3.0 Hubs and USB 2.0/3.0 Memory, Flash/HDD Supported? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are USB 2.0/3.0 Hubs and USB 2.0/3.0 Memory, Flash/HDD Supported?
What fileformats are supported, what is the max. size acceptable 2TB, or more?
My ES-Explorer dif not show any external Memory (FAT and NTFS) on a hub or directly via a cable.

Update of my test results so far:
I tested via an USB 3.0 OTG cable
an USB 2.0 (7 port Belkin) and 3.0 Hub (10 port Anker) with USB-Sticks USB (2.0 and 3.0) all had FAT 32,
On the Belkin a max. of 4 sticks each 128 GB could be connected and all 4 plus the internal µSDXC could be accessed now with the Samsung and the ES-Explorer = 512 GB for books, music and film were available, the negative was after 3 h 50% of the power was gone . One time only 3 sticks were detected.
On the Anker Hub only 3 of 8 connected sticks were detected.
One of the sticks is USB 3.0 but is not detected as USB 3.0 device when directly connected to the USB 3.0 OTG cable.
WTF is the USB 3.0 port good for if no USB 3.0 memory devices are detected/available on the Note as USB 3.0 device?
SInce my Note is not rooted I could not try the NTFS access.

Thank you, I only found ones that mention root required. Do you know of one that doesn't require root?
Do you have an idea where the natively supported filessystems/version are documented?

Nope, sorry. I found out it wasn't supported by plugging in my 1Tb 2.5" HDD. Powered it noproblem but said usb blank or unsupported file system....
Have to see if I can find an app to get it working as it would definitely be a good thing to have....

[Q] Mount HDD without power source?

Hi,
Is it possible to mount an 2.5" HDD without an external power source?
I would like to buy an Western Digital HD Elements SE 1TB 2.5 USB 3.0 but I do not know whether it is working with my Nexus 7 or not...
A usb stick (with an usb OTG) is working but a real hdd needs a lot more power.
And a self powered hdd (with wifi) is not an solution for me.
Thanks in advance!

It depends. I had to splice 5 volts of power into the usb cable of my older usb 2.0 ext hdd to get it to spin up and mount, but some others I know say they dont need ext power on their newer usb 3.0 ext hdds. But, I dont know if it is all usb 3.0 drives.

Let's say, I buy a 2.5" hdd without external power source but I have no luck and it can't be mounted (not enough power). Is it possible to somehow plugin an external power source, so the hdd can spin up and mount?

That means, a usb OTG is wokring fine with usb 3.0? Usb 3.0 is compatible with usb 2.0, but I was a bit concerned that the usb 3.0 to usb 2.0 to micro usb 2.0 combination may cause problems.
I know I'm reviving a thread a bit here, but I have a WD Elements USB3 1TB drive and an OTG cable.
When I first got the drive and cable, it all mounted and worked great. It wasn't until I hooked it up to a PC for the first time to transfer stuff to it that I started getting issues.
Now, I can use it with the PC no worries, but it won't mount on my N7. It'll sometimes flash up that there's something, but then nothing. Is the format wrong? Should I go with making it ext4 rather than NTFS?
Been hunting for more info on it, and will continue to do so, just hoping that someone else has come across this and has a fix or some idea on what's going on.
Thanks
My guess: The Nexus 7 has not enough power to spin up and mount the drive. You have to use an powered hub (e.g. Y-cable with external power source).

Usb otg 3.0?

I tested the Note 3 for USB 3.0 OTG connectivity.
I could not get Superspeed transfers, only USB 2.0 speeds.
I confirmed with the Charger Doctor and multiple USB devices on an unpowered hub that the Note 3 does output the full 900mA of current that a normal USB 3.0 port would. This means that the Note 3 is fully capable of outputting 900mA of current for OTG devices.
I confirmed that the Western Digital USB 3.0 My Passport hard drive (formatted to exFAT) was fully powered and provided sequential reads and writes.
However, the most I could get was 39MiB/sec, which indicates that it is operating at USB 2.0 speeds. Has anybody had success getting the Note 3 to operate at USB 3.0 speeds when using USB OTG?

Hi All
I am currently facing an issue with using a USB 3.0 Flash Drive on my N9005.
I recently bought a Kingston DTHX30/64GB from Amazon and the benchmark which I did personally at a IT Retail Shop at the mall using their AlienWare Laptop show that the USB Flash Drive is working perfectly at > 300/150 (W/R).
I bought an OTG Cable from a local online shop but the benchmark shows only 30/20 (W/R).
The only tests that I have yet to conduct is to borrow another N9005 to verify if the fault lies on the cable or my phone.
Anyone out there is facing the same issue?
Is this a firmware issue?
Pretty sure the standard OTG cables are usb 2.0 only. Need a OTG cable with the correct USB 3.0 connection.

The current USB 3.0 OTG comes from a Local Online Retailer in Singapore which got their cables from China too, but not sure if their source is reliable.
Anyways, I have ordered an OTG this time round that will be flying in to me from China. Let's see if this cable works.
Sorry for double posting as this is an update post.
The USB 3.0 OTG I personally ordered from China came today and I immediately put it to test.
The packaging and the cable is exactly the same as the one I bought from Singapore.
And the results? It's also exactly the same.
This time round, I am going down to Sim Lim Tower to get an Engineer to specially make one USB 3.0 OTG for me and I shall put that to a test. I think this will cost me like 15 to 20 USD (20 to 25 SGD)
I shall name my cables, OTG A (The one I initially bought online from Singapore), OTG B (The one I ordered from China) and OTG C (The one I get from Sim Lim Tower).
I have tested OTG "A" and OTG "B" using on my friend's N9005 and the results are the same.
The next test will be that, I will format my USB 3.0 Hard Drive to Fat32/exFAT and test using all 3 OTG cables.
Can it be my Kingston USB 3.0 Flash drive not compatible with the OTG Cable?
Please enlighten me. I saw somewhere on this forum that we need to activate USB3 on N9005 to use it?
I've been unable to get the SM-N900T to link up USB 3. I've been looking in the kernel source and doing some debugging and the USB 3 host controller isn't even registering a USB 3 device connected to the port. Just a USB 2 device. I've looked at some of the datasheets for the Snapdragon 800 processor in this phone and its not really clear if it supports USB 3 OTG, or just USB 3 MTP as a device.
I'd love to get a definative answer from samsung or qualcomm but for now i've given up on USB 3.0 OTG with the Note 3.
I too would love to hear if it is possible to get the phone to USB3 in OTG mode and not just MTP. I purchased 2 "USB3.0 OTG" cables expecting faster transfer speeds with my external USB 3.0 SSD or USB 3.0 memory sticks. No such luck.
When contacting the seller to inquire about the inability to transfer at superspeed, I was just given responses like it must be a bad cable and will issue a refund. I purchased 2 of these and both have identical transfers speeds.
Likely just get a refund as it looks like it may not be possible to switch the phone to USB3 for the OTG. Bummer.
I have a couple different cables coming today. If they both test at only USB 2 then I'm going to call it a fail.
What i really don't get is why the would put an xhci host in the snapdragon if they weren't going to support USB 3 in host mode.
Eric
I just posted some more results on USB 3 OTG support. I probably should have just put it in this thread but here is a link.
Short version. Still no luck

I've tried a variety of USB 3 OTG adapters and none of them have worked correctly. Suspect OTG functionality doesn't work with USB 3?
Okay
I have tested with 2 different 9005 and 3 USB3.0 OTG Cable from 3 different source.
Everything doesn't work. All possible test are conducted and test results are at USB2.0 speed.
N900 N9000 and N9005
N900 is the Note 3 Neo version. It has USB 2.0 only
N9000 is the Exynos version with USB 3.0
N9005 is the Snapdragon version wiht USB 3 ports but USB 2 speeds.
I want to buy this phone as I can use an Image App to control a camera, and then copy the SDXC card to a USB3 HDD.
Could someone kindly confirm with a quality USB 3.0 OTG cable that the N9000 Exynos version is capable of USB 3
speeds while operating as a USB 3 host ?
N900a n900t
I have both a N900A and N900T rooted and running android 5.0.1 roms.
Having the same results as the rest of you, ~35Mb/s transfer speeds on usb 3.0 otg with a ssd. Quite disappointing.

Whats the Usb for?

I have not seen or heard what the micro usb will be used for on the NP....
The ADT-1 has a USB port and all it can be used for is a keyboard/mouse currently. I'd kill for OTG support. That said though, the ADT-1 also comes with a splitter for the power that adds an additional USB port to connect to your computer to access it via the SDK. So, it could be very much the same setup, or something completely different.
Interesting... You would think they would list the use for it.. maybe these OTG cables i have will come in handy..
It's been said that usb to ethernet adapters will work.

You can connect an OTG cable to it. I connected a USB 3.0 HUB + Ethernet adapter to the OTG cable and connected my keyboard & mouse to the hub and a 64 GB micro SD card for extra storage. I also used the the ethernet port so now I don't need to connect through WiFi

[Q] Note 3 and My passport Ultra 2TB

Ok guys. I've been messing around for some long time using 4.3 rom and my 2tb passport but with no luck reading (or writing from it). I was under impression that phone has to be rooted for reading only NTFS format but....this is fairy tales if you ask me. Recently I upgraded to latest kitekat available and rooted but still no access to my drive. I tried 3 usb sticks (8,16,64) with no problem using FAT format.
I used paragon, stickmount but nothing helped me to work this out. I'm also having second doubt would I have more luck with exFAT format?
Anyone had similar problems connecting 2tb drive to their Note 3? And disk is spinning I'm positive it has enough usb power.
The phone can only support up to 1tb due to power restriction.
The only way that i managed to get a WD 2Tb drive to work with my phone/tablet was to use a powerbank. The phone doesn't give enough power out to start the drive up.
You need :
- 1 powerbank (the bigger the better, as it will also charge your phone/tablet)
- 1 USB Hub + OTG cable (or an USB Hub that can be used as OTG with the phone)
- 1 male-to-male cable
- the phone
- the external HDD
Connect to the USB hub the HDD using the cable suplied with it, connect using the male-to-male cable the powerbank to the USB hub and then connect the USB hub to the phone using the OTG cable (or if you have an OTG cable with USB hub integrated then it's even better).
Now, the powerbank will give power to all devices connected to the USB hub (the HDD and the phone), so it should work OK.
After that you will need to solve the NTFS reading/writing, for that you should be able to use the app you already mentioned.
P.S. when i was playing on the Tab2 with the above configuration, I also had to put an usb stick in the USB hub. For some reason the tablet didn't detect the HDD on the hub unless there was an USB stick too (never understood why). I don't remember having the same problem with the Note3, but i didn't test extensively so your mileage may vary.
Edit : an example of OTG adapter with integrated USB hub for Note 3 : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB3-...-TF-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3-N9000-/171300593212
Thanks for reply verszipo I was looking at this cable, hoping this could power up the drive while phone continues to operate itself without additional power. So Is it possible to have power supplied directly over wall plug instead of power bank?
This USB hub seams like nice idea.
Theoretically connecting like you suggested should work even if I leave disk in NTFS format using tools I mentioned before?

If external hdd is larger than 1 TB,
Use usb "Y" cable to add external power source to connection.
Hey!
I use 1.5TB HDD with mu N3 and it is NTFS...
Why cant you use USB hub with external power supply (try to find out if it is 1A or 2A? bigger = better), and at phone install total commander with plugin USB plugin for Total Commander (no root requided!!)...
I use a 2tb wd passport. No need for external power source. I use paragon to read and write to ntfs partition. My drive gets detected within a few seconds but takes several minutes to mount the drive. Maybe you just need to wait. I know my drive is mounted when the My Files app launches by itself and shows the drive contents.
I received my Y cable hoping extra juice could solve my problems but I have no luck at all. No matter what I use I can't make my drive read. I don't have any options to choose.
Maybe I should format my drive using different allocation size unit, I never formated it and it's not 4 months old. Maybe my phone has some crappy cache leftovers so I should use cleaner? Hell I don't know what to do anymore. Usb sticks are working fine all the way.
Ok update on topic. I mange to make it work. I formated to NTFS with default allocation size, nothing special. Using paragon + total commander plugin + total commander. Works fine now WITHOUT additional power. Only downside is that mobile battery drains way too fast when you connect storage on it. It does not matter if I plug in additional supply to drive or not, draining is the same. Anyone noticed this and any workaround for this.
Thank you guys for suggestions.
I mounted my CN memory usb3.0 3tb drive with paragon in my rooted sm n9005
It mounted fine to a folder in my int SD, and i copied ober 20gb of data

OTG support for USB type c

Hello
Apologies if this has been asked before. I can't find a definitive answer...
Has anyone managed to get access to an USB memory stick on the OnePlus 2 actually working?
I've just received my OnePlus 2 and have rooted it etc. I have bought a couple of USB type C to USB A female sockets, both claiming to support OTG. However, neither of them appear to work. I've tried with a number of different USB sticks, some of them with indicator LEDs on them. When plugging them in, the LED indicator stays off and there is no extra drive in settings/storage, even after ticking the OTG check box.
I have booted to TWRP recovery and tried to mount the OTG storage. The phone vibrates and the check box immediately disappears...
I'm not sure if I'm missing something here!
The two items I have tried are:
1. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00VGF2UPQ
2. http://m.belkin.com/uk/p/P-F2CU036/
Thanks for your time

Neither seem to work for me? I am trying to connect to a flight control board, so using a normal USB -> Micro USB, but the boards in question do not receive any power, nevermind data!
Any ideas?
Grr....
it seems that the problem is that does not support USB 3.1 (and do not know if not 3.0), the adapter must be old (not blue)
Both the OTG adapters I have support USB 2.0/3.0 and 3.1, but neither of them work.
What you are saying is you need a USB Type-C 2.0 adapter? Not seen those anywhere, are you sure they exist?
Same here. Doesn't work, using an adapter with a micro USB OTG cable doesn't work (this combo cable/Kingston USB 3 key works very well with OPO)
And it doesn't work either with this OTG cable

What do you mean by the c-adapter? How do you connect it? C-adapter connect to an OTG? Or the OTG is integrated with c-adapter in it?
Cus I bought a separate c-adapter then connect to my micro USB OTG cable..
