[Q] Stuck on baseband N9005XXUBMJ1 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
After searching without interesting results, I come here to see if someone else has noticed this issue I'm facing.
Ever since I did the Root De La Vega and went to MJ1 with it, any official firmware I flash works ok and changes the csc and all other parts accordingly EXCEPT the modem/baseband that is stuck ever since on N9005XXUBMJ1
I've downloaded the latest ODIM tar file for MJ6 and it flashed all well without a hitch EXCEPT for the modem that, yes, still is at N9005XXUBMJ1.
Tried Odin 3.09 and 3.07, full FW and also only the modem.bin file with the same bad result.
There's no error whatsoever while flashing, and you can see the blue progressbar on the phone, and then it reboots as usual, but the baseband is still the same.
I even went and used a hex editor to check that the modem, bin was actually a different version (in the latest MJ6) and it is in deed the correct stated version.
So... has anyone else noticed this behavior or even knows to point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.
Thank you very much in advance!
PS: I can even go BACK in firmware version to XXUBMI7 without a hitch EXCEPT the baseband that stays frozen...

Thx for reading and replying!
Well... sadly yes... I wish it would be a bad download, but I already tried many different ones, ZIP decompresses correctly and the TAR images flash without any issues...
This is a screen capture of latest try just with the modem file (another download) with the same result...
I just have left to try a dd to the correct modem partition and see if that changes anything...
Really weird... Phone is working correctly and I get signal and everything is working ok, but it seems forever stuck.

Yeah, went back to my MJ1 TWRP backup... but it is bugging me... A LOT (and would like to see if reception can be enhanced with newer modem).

Dit you try extracting the modem.bin from the stock rom tar file and flash it with odin? Put it in the CP slot. I did that yesterday to firmware MJ3 and updated the modem to MJ2 this way. It did't trip my knox counter.

M8 take out battery for a min, start odin and uncheck the autoreboot then pass once the mj2 modem, wait a bit and pass the same modem again and reboot.
Try this, many people have this trouble

YEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
You sir are a legend!!!!
Followed your precise instructions and I'm on MJ2! ... so it seems that it was getting the reboot command before finishing the update or something!...
Good to know, now at least I know that my N3 is ok!
Thx again, I can relax now!

You wanna lauph now? From my measurements the mj1 modem is better in carrier signal but more power consuming but mj2 is better in Wifi and less power consuming.
If you have good signal stay as you are, I personally rolled back to mj1

Thx again... life saver!

It's available from Samfirmware for BTU (UK).
Flashed it without a hitch and with MJ4 modem, as it should be.
I imagine it was stuck on MJ1 with a bad flash.

Well... in my case I knoxed the hell out of my N3...(But it will be my last Samsung, as I hate restrictions of any kind).

I've downloaded the MJ6 ROM with MJ4 modem. I extracted the modem.bin file from the archive and created a .tar file to flash with ODIN. I flashed, but still on MI6 modem, any idea why? I even flashed the NON-HLOS.bin file but still stuck on MI6?

[INFO] XXJVK with or with-out bootloaders [Find the answer here]

Before you read any further:
This thread will not discuss fixing Download Mode on effected mobile phones.
This thread will not discuss any method on flashing bootloaders only.
This thread will not discuss anything beside bootloaders of XXJVK and why they are needed in some cases.
Please keep the thread clean and stay on topic, thanks

Why did I write this:
I have been across many threads, including the XXJVK firmware thread, and I did read many posts by members asking on which firmware to flash, if it should be the one with bootloaders included or the one without.
I did also find a post telling our members to flash the bootloaders only and not the whole firmware.
I would like to clear some things up for our members and why there is 2 versions, one with bootloaders and one without bootloaders.
Why 2 versions:
If you flash the firmware without bootloaders when your device have been running only Froyo and have not flashed the Gingerbread beta XWJV1 before, then your device is still using the old bootloaders and you will notice the followings:
* Graphics corruption during boot.
* The device will not be able to enter Recovery Mode.
Just to make it easy to understand, please look below:
XXJVK firmware with-out bootloaders + Froyo/Eclair bootloaders on device = Graphics/Screen corruption + Can't enter Recovery Mode
XXJVK firmware with-out bootloaders + XWJV1(GB Beta) bootloaders on device = OK!
XWJV1(GB Beta) firmware with-out bootloaders + XXJVK bootloaders on device = OK!
Froyo firmware with-out bootloaders + XXJVK or XWJV1(GB Beta) bootloaders on device = OK!

After the device has been updated to the new bootloaders by flashing the firmware with bootloaders, then it will work with any firmware, and you don't have to flash the firmware with bootloaders again, this is why there is 2 versions, because bootloaders flash can be risky, the package that does not include bootloaders is for those that have already flashed a full XWJV1 or a full XXJVK with bootloaders included, may need/like to re-flash, or for those that only want to try the new firmware.
Why not flashing bootloaders alone:
Flashing bootloaders is risky, this is why when the XXJVK with bootloaders has been repackaged then it was repackaged so 2 files will be flashed prior to bootloaders, so if there is a bad connection between the PC and the phone or with Odin by any chance, then Odin is far from touching boot sectors, and by that a member can have a good flash even while flashing a full firmware with bootloaders included.
I don't advice to flash bootloaders only, if there is a bad connection or Odin hangs by any chance, then you have nothing but a paper-weight nice-looking-dead-device on your desk.
My question is: Do you see any thread or a post in this forum that stats a bricked or a dead device after 16000+ downloads and then take the risk of flashing bootloaders only?

@Ramad, thanks for this information. Do we know for certain whether Samsung have 'locked' these new bootloaders like they did with the Galaxy Tab ones or can you flash back to a 2.2.1 Rom with no problems after flashing the Gingerbread bootloaders?

The bootloaders are not locked and will not prevent the device from flashing or using older releases(Froyo/Eclair), I have tested the new bootloaders with both Froyo and Eclair and they worked fine.
<Don't try it if you don't really know what that implies !>
I've only Flashed Sbl.bin (after add it in a tar on Linux machine, don't make it with another tool !) fixes graphics corruption and recovery and downgrade to 2.2.1 works like before.
</Don't try it if you don't really know what that implies !>
I must confess a noobish doubt, how can I see if I have bootloaders ?
I'm using a custom rom JS8 Froyo
So I can determine wich version should I use

Every device has bootloaders, but if you are asking if it's the old or new bootloaders that are installed in your, then you have old bootloaders if you have not flashed the beta XWJV1 or XXJVK package that has bootloaders included, those 2 firmwares has the new bootloaders.
Thank you once again ramad

What would be the advantage over flashing both boot loaders? Because that also will not interfere with froyo...

Bootloader files are in the PDA tar archive, when you flash the PDA tar archive, the bootloaders on the device will be updated, this is why I wrote that checking 'Phone Bootloader Update' will not matter. If the file that you have is called PDA_XXJVK_Sbl.tar then the bootloaders in your device are updated now.
SBL Bootloader / Rooting.
[Ramdad], Thanks for the post.
I've got the SBL exe, which I assume will flash the bootloader in the correct way. Now my question is, if I want to update my firmware, is it safe (bootloader wise) to flash the JV1 & root kernel and then the JVK kernel?
Thanks!

Thanks, just flash JVK that you have and you will be fine.
[Ramad],
Not trying to confuse people, cm7 and MIUI require 2.2 bootloaders even though the firmware is 2.3.3.
So if you are from Samsung rom like xxjvk or jv1 and going to cm7 or MIUI, you will encounter screen tearing as well. Downgrade to a 2.2 with bootloaders will eliminate the tearing.
Hope you can include this info as well.
P/S: As always, thanks for sharing this with the users here.

thanks for the information... I thought to flash with bootloaders... now I'm considering again...
Hey Ramad,
I have a little question : a few firmwares on Samfirmware have these files in PDA : sbl.bin, boot.bin and param.lfs. I have heard that these files can brick our phone.
Can i delete them without changing anything in the PDA and flash through Odin ?
Thanks for helping me.
Sorry for my bad english.

Bad Camera Quality now - Downgrade Camera Firmware ? @ 4.3 MJ5 (i9505)

Hello,
thats my first post
Im je11 from Germany, I registered here, cause its the best forum on the internet for android modding, development, etc.
My Andro-Devices I already had were an Galaxy S2 i9100 (where i already changed the camera firmware to optimze quality of pictures), XPERIA Z and now I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE i9505 ! - Very good smartphone imo.
Problem:
A few days ago I updatet my i9505 SGS IV from 4.2.2 to Stock 4.3 (MJ5) DBT Unbrandet.
Now I got a bad quality of my photos (on 4.2.2 it was much better!)
Where I can download diffrent camera firmwares for my device ? I only need the cameraFW from the 4.2.2.
Its possible ? I already searched on the whole internet - but nothing found :-/
Thank you very much
and sorry for my bad english
Same problem, I would love to know the answer to this

That's the latest, if you see your current firmware it matches it. As far as I know the last time camera firmware was updated was when 4.3 was first released. When I updated to 4.3 from 4.2.2 and opened the camera for the first time it updated the camera. Maybe later firmwares will bring nearer updates.

Android 4.2.2 baseband firmware version
Hello! Please tell me what baseband firmware version that you had before you updated it, I'm asking you because the camera is very useful for me at work, for me this phone is not a toy and unfortunately I was in the same situation with you, my phone was purchased from the store and it's new and it came with Android 4.3 baseband I9505XXUEMKF - the camera was bad like yours, I've updated the baseband firmware to Android 4.4.2 I9505XXUFNB8, the phone was never rooted and I was not installed no custom ROM, I've purchased it on 20 June 2014, I have warranty at it and now after some small researches I've decided to downgrade to 4.2.2 and for that I will send the phone in an Samsung authorized service center but I don't know what baseband firmware version, I want to get best of this mobile because I've made big sacrifices to purchase it because I am needing it. Thank you very much in advance!
Have a nice day!
Best regards!

And I was going to make a good old demonstration of "how to install Stock KitKat ROM on your SM-N9005", until the whole thing got so out-of-hand... here are my failed attempts compressed into a real short video...
My Note 3 was soft-bricked, meaning that a failure in flashing software has caused my phone to become a 'brick', a not-dead-but-unusable condition.
It was a bummer! But it is one that can hardly avoid having all those upgrade tutorials on YouTube which didn't mention the uniqueness of 16Gb Hong Kong Note 3. Why should they mention anyway? They don't have 16Gb Hong Kong Note 3 in the first place.
Thanks Samsung for making the Hong Kong Note 3 so special, such that it is the Note 3 with the smallest storage in the world (16Gb) when the rest of the world are getting at least 32Gb! For this and for the trouble you have caused Samsung, I hate you!
After 2 days of research, I have finally arrived at a completely, perfectly usable state!!! And it is functioning with speed!!
However, from soft-bricked to success, the road had not been smooth. There was about a day or so that my phone was able to boot and use the internet, but had no in/outgoing call, no sound, no Google Now, no S-Voice, no camera, slow lockscreen and slow settings.
I have followed all the instructions given by several XDA members, but I still could not get it to work. Why?
That's because all those instructions are inaccurate. The thing is, minor details that are missing can be real serious, and for that, I want to write a very very detailed descriptions on how to solve this soft-brick issue specifically for 16 Gb International Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005) when upgrading to KitKat 4.4.2.
Before you start, you'll need,
a Custom ROM, eg. Sweet ROM v7.01 4.4.2 NA6

a Hong Kong N9005ZHUBMI7 Rescue ROM Download here
the latest CWM Recovery, eg 6.0.4.7 Download on my blog
Odin 3.07 Download on my blog
the latest Samsung USB Driver Download on my blog
Samsung Kies Download on my blog
Note 3 16Gb SM-N9005 from Hong Kong at 50% battery level
a Note 3 USB 3.0 cable
Installation Instructions:
Install Samsung Kies
Install Samsung USB Driver
Connect USB into PC and Note 3, then copy Custom ROM onto the SD card
Put Note 3 into Download mode by holding Power + Volume down + Home buttons at the same time until you see "Warning!!", then press Volume up
When you see "Downloading..." and Android logo, plug in the USB into the PC and Note 3
Run Odin 3.07 (See my video)
When you see a blue 0:[COM4], in the Bootloader put leaked KitKat's BL file, and in PIT, PDA, PHONE, CSC put Hong Kong N9005ZHUBMI7 Rescue ROM's PIT, AP, CP and CS respectively and then press Start to flash.
When Note 3 restarts, it will keep rebooting and it will only show Samsung boot screen, at this time, remove the battery and then put it back.
Repeat Step 4, 5 and 6
In Odin 3.07, go to PDA and choose CWM Recovery, eg 6.0.4.7, and press Start to flash, it will reboot automatically when complete. Unplug the USB.
When the phone reboots, it will boot into CWM Recovery. If it asks you to root phone, just say no. Otherwise, select Wipe data/factory rest --> yes, Wipe Cache --> yes, advance --> Wipe Dalvik Cache --> yes. This will erase the unwanted files and prepare your phone for the good stuff.
Go to install zip --> choose zip from /external_sd and select the Custom ROM you have chosen, then choose yes to flash. This will take about 3 minutes, press reboot after it is completed.
This reboot will be slow, and most likely there will be no sound at boot and errors at setup, be extremely patient and wait for the screen asking you to choose Language to appear. Choose the language you want, press Next, then do nothing else!!!!
Without doing anything else, repeat step 4, 5 and 6.
In Odin 3.07, go to CP, choose leaked KitKat's CP file and then press Start to flash.
When the phone reboots, you should hear the Samsung bootup music and then everything will be functioning perfectly!
The moral of the story is, you have got to have brain and perseverance to work with KitKat 4.4.2.

I have a 16gb Hong Kong Note 3. Firstly I wish to give my congratulations for you, my friend. Fantastic post! Some questions, please:
1- My phone is stock and rooted since the first firmware. I don't upgrade it for the newest version HK Firmware. Is your guide useful for me if I want to update to kit kat and don't wait the official kit kat Hong Kong?
2- After the moment (final part of the guide) that we have to select the language and only check next can I just power off the phone to make easy to start the phone in download Mode to finish the process?
Sorry for my questions and my poor english, my friend. I have read several posts to learn with guys like you. Please let me know. Thank you so much!

1. Yes, that is exactly what I did and what I thought. I didn't want to wait. I came from stock and rooted 4.3
2. Powering off the phone first, in my opinion, doesn't make going into download mode easier. So just directly hold Power+Vol Down+ Home to get into Download Mode

UK Firmware on a Canadian Network

Hi all,
I have a GT-I9505 phone. I am in Canada on the Rogers network. I had an issue with their OTA update for 4.4.2 a week ago and was forced to use Odin to put a UK BTU 4.3 firmware onto the phone.
The GT-I9505, to my knowledge, is a UK phone (I actually called Samsung and they told me that model is a UK phone).
So my question is will I receive OTA updates through the Canadian network (Rogers) for the UK BTU firmware that I put on my phone.
The phone is unlocked.
Thanks.
You will receive UK OTA updates if u flashed BTU firmware and ur phone goes OK :highfive:
*EDIT: For confirm it you can:
1. Conect it to Kies 3 and take a look your CSC (Code region). CSC are this 3 letters btw parenthesis. You have all codes HERE
2. If u doesnt root and nothing, u will receive the updates of this CSC. Hi5

So the Canadian network will allow me to download/install OTA BTU firmware even if I'm in Canada? And what do you mean "goes OK"?

I have (AUT) which is Switzerland. Based on SamMobile, Switzerland has 4.4.2 out already.
So what does this mean? Will I get OTA updates (through the updates settings on my phone) for Android firmware?
I'm still on 4.3 and my Canadian network that I'm on (Rogers) pushed out 4.4.2 last week. I'm not getting any updates...
Please advise. Thanks!

That's weird though because I bought my phone online, its international and I know there is no GT-i9505 model in Canada. And I was getting OTA through that. So clearly whatever stock firmware I had at the time (which I don't know what it was) was receiving OTA updates.
Any thoughts?

No I don't have that. I just know my phone is Brazilian. Out of the box it worked fine here in Canada on the Rogers network. Got 4.3 and it was fine. Perhaps 4.4.2, put out by Rogers, realized I wasn't the right model or not using a carrier-specific phone?
I'm just not sure anymore. I got the UK BTU 4.3 firmware from Sam mobile but Kies 3 says I am AUT (Switzerland). And I am still unable to get the 4.4.2 update through KIES or OTA.

No it is not rooted. Antutu says no root access and I don't even know how to root (I'm a noob). Also, my device status is official.
I am so confused. I just want to get back the normal OTA update ability and get 4.4.2. I do not want to manually update the firmware every time.
Please help...

So I'll flash an AUT 4.3 onto my phone and see if it wants to do an OTA 4.4.2 update. Thanks

THIS THREAD IS JUST A REFERENCE & LINK TO CHAINFIRE'S WORK, NOTHING ELSE
THIS WILL VOID WARRANTY & SET KNOX COUNTER 0x1. THERE IS NO KNOWN METHOD TO ROOT WITHOUT TRIPPING KNOX !!
Repository of supported devices:
http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
If your device is NOT SUPPORTED:
1. Download your deice firmware from sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com
2. Extract recovery.img
3. Post your recovery.img in Chainfire OFFICIAL CF-AUTO-ROOT THREAD !! and ask him nicely to look into it
If your device has issues with CF-Auto Root method:
* If your device has a LOCKED BOOTLOADER, then you're out of luck. There is no known method to unlock.
* Post in Chainfire OFFICIAL CF-AUTO-ROOT THREAD !!
Official XDA CF-Auto-Root Thread:
PLEASE POST ALL QUERIES RELATED TO CF-AUTO ROOT TO THE BELOW OFFICIAL CF-AUTO-ROOT THREAD !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980683
I have only personally tested SM-N915S model and confirm root working. I can not vouch for any other device models. Just make sure you have your full firmware package available to recover from a soft brick and read the thread before attempting to flash !!
Method used for my SM-N915S:
1. Advised: Have a full stock firmware package available (just in case of soft brick) [sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com]
2. Have Samsung USB drivers installed on Windows PC (Easiest way is DL KIES from Samsung)
3. DISABLE REACTIVATION LOCK: device settings > security > reactivation lock >> DISABLE (uncheck)
4. Flash via Odin [I used Odin3 v3.07 - attachment] as per Chainfire's instructions !
** If unsure how to use Odin, there are many guides found by searching !
5. Wait around 30 secs after flash (stuck on boot screen), and hopefully device will boot.
6. Open SuperSU app and update SU if prompted

Root on Sprint SM915P.... CHECK !
Okay, my Sprint SM915P phone is successfully rooted. It went down pretty much how it did in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/general/easy-steps-stock-odin-n915tuvu1anjl-sm-t2943993
I didn't install the SD card fix yet...have to check that out first.
I got the "FAIL" messsage after flashing the CF autoroot tar file, then I thought WTH, I'll see if the Tmobile variant process works, so I tried it, and it worked. I have rebooted several times and it seems ROOT is sticking. Recovery had a hard time finding the UPdate SU file for some reason, but I eventually did, and flashed it.
So, my recommendation is to flash the Chainfire Autoroot tar file for the Sprint variant first, then follow the thread I referenced above for the rest. Your results may be different, so buyer beware! Good luck.
Many Thanks to Chainfire and TEKHD , you guys rock!

As your device isn't yet listed in Chainfire's thread, I have no idea if any of the official CF-Auto-Root would be compatible. If you were to risk your device, you would look for a Snap Dragon one, but I would not recommend to those who can't afford the risk. EDIT: Without having the official stock firmware package available, I WOULD NOT TRY IT.
If your device isn't yet supported, maybe see if your firmware package is available at sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com , download and extract the recovery.img . Then upload the recovery.img to Chainfire's main XDA thread (link in OP) and ask nicely if he can spend the time to support your device I there is nothing, maybe contact one of those sites and politely request
mmm, tried it on the N915G with the appropriate files being (CF-Auto-Root-tblte-tbltedt-smn915g) but no luck on rooting so far. Initially I thought it could be me being silly with drivers and ODIN versions, tried a few drivers and ODIN versions but same outcome. Was stuck at NAND: write failure after what appears to be an attempt to write in recovery, then cache, even after a few tries [being full disconnect, restart in download mode and re-flash]. No issues restoring to store firmware (N915GXXU1ANJ3_N915GXSA1ANJ3_N915GXXU1ANJ3_HOME.tar.md5) though.
Any tips guys?

You might want to drop a post in Chainfire main XDA thread to let him know it's not working. He seems really busy, so that's of he monitors that thread anymore.
Nothing official, there might be something unofficial using Note 4 method. There is always risk to remember though.

Thanks. Not too worried about Knox. Hopefully that won't change after tmobile gets my note3 with Knox tripped back, though.
Does anyone have an extracted version of the SM-N915S rom? I was looking for few apks from that one. I installed some files from the TMO version on to my phone and it has messed up certain functions.
Thanks in advance!
