Worth it to upgrade from v1 Note 10.1? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

I have the gen 1 Note 10.1 and absolutely love it. Is the new 2014 Note a worthwhile upgrade? In particular, are the screen and speed much better?

I just went from the OG 10.1 to the 10.1 2014... When I first bought my 10.1 last year, I was very tempted to bring it back because I hated the screen. I soon realized that I loved the device as a whole, though. I got a TON of use out of it. I couldn't give it up and I got over the screen for a while. Once I heard there was going to be a updated version coming and then they announced it was the same screen as the Nexus 10, I was sold immediately. When you are trying to read smaller text on the OG 10.1 screen, you strain your eyes because the pixel density is just not there. Everything looks grainy. Once you see the screen on the 10.1 2014, its a game changer. You can't go back. I swear it hurts my eyes to look at the OG 10.1 now.
All that screen comes with a price though. I still feel there are things that the OG 10.1 handles betters just because it doesn't have to push all of those pixels on the screen. There are times when the 10.1 2014 will have some random chugs and video video performance and I def think it's because of the extra resolution it has to process. Either way, the device in general is very fast and multi-tasks like a champ. I know for me it was a no-brainer to upgrade. But that might vary for different people and their financial situations.
Hope that helps

That helps a lot. Im going to go pick up one tomorow if the screen really helps with reading. By the way, I hope you dont work for Samsung lol.

Haha good call... If I did, it would be silly for me to point out it's flaws to obviously

Read the Note 2014 review as many as possible before you decide to upgrade.

I'm going to say Hell yes! The upgrade is worth it. Just for the screen it's worth it.. But improved s-note is great too. It feels like a much more premium tablet than last year's model in my opinion. Speed I don't notice much difference if anything the new version is a bit laggier but I see that getting fixed with software updates and it's fine for what I use it for the most. As a notebook for school

I went ahead and got it. The screen is indeed much nicer. It is quite large though. I find that snote in particular is much slower.

Large? You're comparing to original 10.1, how can this be large?

Sorry meant laggy. Damn autocorrect.

The speakers on the old Note 10.1 are actually pretty good. How are the the speakers on the 2014 edition compared to the old version?

They are not as good because they are no longer on the front.

They're a lot better compared to if they were located in the back. In my opinion, the location of the speakers on the 10.1 2014 is well justified for the slimmer bezel. Of course, this is a personal choice. Some people don't mind huge bezels (e.g., new Nexus 7).

I just got the 2014 ed. a few days ago, still getting used to it. I like that it's lighter and the screen is awesome. I'm not jazzed about the physical buttons and it's not as responsive. However, now that it's sporting a proper display I can pass down the Nexus 7 to the kids and use the Note tablet for reading as well. I'm really looking forward to Google Play Magazines on it. I'll try to remember to post more as I go. The higher storage capacity is nice also.

I own a first gen Note 10.1 GT-N8013.
The updates on the G-Note 10.1 2014 has struck my interest and I would really like to own one but............
The problems that are being reported with speaker gills and IR blasters being loose, lag issues and the Knox counter issue for root has put out that fire in me.
I may wait til next year or at lease wait for all the bugs to be worked out.

Valid concerns.

Holding out for Note 12.2" with Snapdragon 800 to arrive in the US. Coming from original Note 10.1 10.1" doesn't do the pen justice plus it's small for a device that requires two hands and miss the stability. Never once experienced a random reboot or hang which happens, although rare, even with Nexus 7, 7 2013 and 10. 2014 will be very interesting, too, with A57 ARMv8 64-bit variants on ~16nm node and 4GB+ DRAM. Like to see more AutoCAD like apps like CATIA.

How are you guys dealing with the changes to MultiWindowing? I miss cascade mode. Although, I think someone here has a way to show more than 2 apps at a time. Still looking for that.

Wow, with the note being such a success I wonder if in the further all phones will be 5.3 inches and future 'tablet/phone' hybrid devices will be 7 inches?
Even now some people say I'm ridiculous carrying such a big phone but I see this 'big' phone being looked at as 'too small' in a few years??? Though I don't think they will make phones with screens bigger than 7 inches considering 7 inches is already a 'mini' tablet's size.
Either ways I also hope they don't release a Note 2 so soon, just bought my note in February, would hate for it to be 'old' or 'outdated' in less than a year, I feel like past mid 2013 would be the perfect time or maybe end of 2013 in December.

That's actually very interesting because they pumped a lot od money to manufacture and promote Galaxy Note which was - let's be honest - an experimental device. With 7 millions sold - and people getting excited about it everyday and buying more and more - i guess Note 2 is a matter of time.
But i have to agree - not yet. It's still too early to release Note 2.
The note is an amazing device, everyone that sees mine loves it even if it is a bit big for some. I normally get itchy feet around the six month mark of having a phone, thinking I want a new one, but haven't thought about getting a new phone at all. Its amazing how badly the dell streak did compared to the note. Probably because of dells lack of advertising, but also I guess all the right things just came together with the note and has captured peoples imagination, the hd amoled screen, the s-pen the dual core great camera, great gps it just does everything well. Never had a phone I enjoy using so much!!

I'm sort of doubting that 7" will become a phone standard. The Note is already approaching the upper limit of what many people can reasonably hold and fit in normal pockets. I wouldn't be surprised to see some tablets come with a mic and speaker to be used as a phone though.

I tried to carry Galaxy Tab 7.7 (it support normal phone, I can call and sms), it was too big for me. Ideal is 5.0 - 6.3.
6 inches would be an ideal replacement for a tablet and phone to me. Galaxy Note 5.3 sometimes feels small for internet or drawing.
Yeah I hope note 2 has a bigger screen. 6 would be good

Yea now thinking about it again I doubt 7 inch phones but 6.5 inch is still possible. Only one thing that gets in the way, when we use the note to talk...... now with the note even though some people are like its so wired, I think its just fine as its just right from my ears down to my mouth, the length of the phone is exactly right and its not too wide that to covers the entire of my face on the side, so bigger screen mean its going to be longer/wider, I can't say it will look wierd until I see it being used but this is definetly a concern.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda priemium
No matter what, the Note 2 has to be pocketable.
That totally rules out 7".
I could maybe see 5.8, if they somehow find a way to make bezelless phones. Which completely hasn't happened yet. I already can't really tie my shoes when it's in the front pocket of a couple of my pants. It's pretty close to borderline for me.

I think we should be reasonable here.
I think if anyone who wants Note 2 to be bigger than 5.8" should really consider getting a tablet and phone separately.
I wouldnt mind a 5.8" personally but anything bigger will be really hard to use as a phone.
Also I really want a 16:10 ratio screen res like the current Note.
Perhaps 1920x1200
Im all about bigger screens but anything bigger than the Note would be simply too big for me. Still im pretty sure they could manage to give us 5,5" screen without increasing the device's dimensions. That would be nice.

5.3 isn't small, but when you use a tablet like the iPad to browse than switch to the Note it does seem small, same thing with browsing on a note than switching to other phones, it does seem small but over all 5.3 isn't small.

OK maybe if the cut off the buttons and just have one small (but big enough for the average thumb size) home button and removed the Samsung logo ontop of the phone and made the screen wider removing the little space on the sides, it could happen, also hope that in future Notes, speakers are on the bottom or sides of the phone and not the back rely dumb to have it there

Hi all, I'm considering buying a nexus 7. I have a thrive 10.1,but find it bulky to type in portrait mode. I use it to take a lot of notes on students, but also for the Web and reading on the weekend. Anyone give up a 10.1 for a 7 screen? Is it that big of a difference?

I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1.. I had the same issues with it as you did. Yes it's a big difference from the N7 but for me it made ALL the difference. Portrait mode is perfect to use and type on and landscape mode is perfect for web browsing.. 10.1 was just too bulky for me.. I always felt burdened by it like I was carrying around a computer monitor and not a convenient and productive piece of technology.
My Tab 10.1 now sits on the shelf as I wait for pershoot to pump out some new CM10 builds for it and I plan to just use it as a media center interface. Meanwhile me, my Nexus S and N7 are attached at the hip
I had a 10" HP Touchpad with CM9 that I really liked, but after using a friend's Nexus 7 for a little while, I decided to sell the Touchpad while they were still selling on eBay fora decent amount and buy a Nexus 7. I have had the Nexus for a couple weeks now and have found I use it a lot more than I did the Touchpad since it is a lot more convenient. Also, now when I pick up my wife's iPad, it feels HUGE and unwieldy!
I have not missed the larger screen at all.

I like the 7" size, as it seems to be a happy medium. It's easy to hold with one hand and read. Its comfortable in landscape mode and much more comfortable for playing games. It's easy to carry and to toss into my purse or a pack. I don't watch movies much but it's a nice personal size for viewing. My other device is a HP touchpad and it feels large and heavy in comparison.

Sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB WiFi for the money to buy an 8GB Nexus7, and didn't regret it for an instant. It's actually portable, it's ridiculously fast, and while it has a smaller screen than the GTab10.1, it's the same resolution, which results in a much more crisp picture.
We now have two Nexus7's in the house: an 8GB and a 16GB. We'll be adding a 32GB as soon as they start showing up for purchase.

Nevermind the GTAB 10.1 had a bug in portrait mode that caused it to lag like hell.. Even their ICS update had it. Samsung really screwed the pooch with the tab 10.1.. It seriously under performed considering it was a dual core tegra 2.

Sold mine as soon as the n7 came out. Hadn't made it to ICS yet. I hear they run VERY well on JellyBean though, especially with all that TouchWiz crap stripped away
I was a hardcore 10 clincher, had four tablets in the 10 inch variety and loved my prime and keyboard. But 7 inches is perfect for almost everything I use a tablet for. In fact since the nexus 7 launched, I got mine before preorders shipped but I dunno the date, I haven't used anything that would be better on a 10 inch screen.

I know alot of people that once they got a 7 ince tab, mainly the Nexus 7, they no longer used/wanted to use, their 10 inch, as it was uncomfortable, heavy and just too big to be portable.
7 inch is the way to go, I personally think 8 inch would be perfect, but 7 inch it is.
GET A N7! TRUST ME
Get a 16 for sure, or wait for the 32.. 8 is just too small
I personally enjoy the size, it works for me immensely. And is super portable.
It's not the size of the tab that's important, but the skill with which you wield it.
I like the 7" and find it very easy to transport. But it is important to give your eye's more "visual breaks" and look arround more. I seem to get more eye fatigue with the 7" if I'm not careful.
So to add another overused phrase to this thread.
Be careful how you handle that 7" tab, you could go blind.

Anyone here have the Note 2 and Nexus 7??

I'm beating myself up over her thinking about if it want the Nexus 7 or not. Just wondering how much I will use it if I use my Note 2 for everything. Just wanted some input.

I have both...and trying N7 out for a week or 2.
If it was one or the other It'd come down to the T-Mobile N7 vs the Note 3. Having both is really redundant.
We note users like big screens so we'd definitely look at replacing for that reason.! ...screens great on N7.
Not having S-Pen is not an issue with me.
Speed wise they're not that much different (course my Note is rooted, this is not).
On a either-or basis tho the camera would definitely swing me to the Note 3. It'd be great if the camera hardware were hackable!
As of this moment, I'll have the Note 3 come September, not the Nexus 7.

Note 2 owner here. Admittedly the N7 has taken over most of the phone duties when I'm at home, the screen resolution and real estate lends itself to a much better browser experience since full webpages are still legible without zooming thanks to the high res screen. Also, the IPS display on the N7 produces much more natural colors - which is an added bonus to photographers like myself...photos are way too saturated to view/edit on Samsung amoled screens.
So ultimately, it worked out great for me mainly because of the screen - high res and more accurate color reproduction means I can finally do some light photo editing on a portable device! Gaming is great, native controller support, vanilla android works smoothly, and the tablet itself is just small enough for me to take along as a 2nd device. Also, phone battery now lasts longer so I can worry less when I have to go out and do something later in the day. I do have to point out that at this point, my Note 2 still outperforms the N7 on some tasks. Maybe because it's got less pixels to push?
The N7 is definitely still worth a look if you're a Note 2 user, imo.
When I got my N2 in November 2012 I immediately stopped using my original N7. Both devices were so similar in size that it felt redundant to use the tablet. I sold the tablet and used the phone as my only device. I eventually sold my N2 because it was too big to carry around. I never used the N2 stylus anyway. I replaced it with a Galaxy S4 which fits in my pockets much better and only half an inch smaller in screen size. plus it's 1920x1080 and higher pixel density. I got the new N7 and I love it. The N7 screen is much nicer than the N2. I think having the S4 for use on-the-go, and the new N7 for use at home is the best combo. I also like Touchwiz on phones and prefer vanilla Android on tablets.
I have both. I've personally never thought of the Note 2 as a tablet replacement. To me it's a large smartphone that helps me be more efficient at work. The new N7 with that sexy display is just much more comfortable to do casual browsing, reading, and video watching on. I'd recommend picking one up from Best Buy and seeing if it works for you. If not, they have a great return policy of course.
I have both and can't recommend the nexus enough. Definitely worth having both

Yes the specs on the N7 are an improvement but you probably won't use the new N7 more if you do everything with your Note 2 already. Save your money and forget about it unless you're just looking for a reason to spend money and get a shiny new toy just for the sake of having one. If that is the case, just do it and don't ask people from thw Internet for affirmation.

Own both. Note II is good but N7 2013 is better and what I've been using more of lately.
I have both and haven't had a chance with the N7 much. I'm trying to use my phone less and the N7 more at home for everything just because then I don't have to keep lugging my laptop home from work all the time, and just remote in.
But wow...talk about screen difference! Going back to my note 2 after looking at the N7...it's kind of painful.

i have 3 things that i find utterly annoying with this tablet.
1. it seems that while in drawing with sketchbook pro, the button on the s pen gets in the way, idk if i just cant figure out how, but it needs an option to turn off the button.
2. the sounds removing the s pen(at least for me) kinda suck, would like the option to add custom sounds.
3.this is just a toss in one, but when i got my tablet, the right botton corner was up, like it hadnt been put together from the factory, after about 10 min about gentle coaxing it snapped back into place, but come on samsung... 600 for a tablet with out of the box defects?? not a big issue though
I agree. I had the original 10.1 & loved it but I sold it in hopes of getting this new 10.1 or the surface pro. Glad I didn't get the new 10.1. Then some people complain of lag on it. I guess it's all the bloatware Samsung has running on it. Good luck either way.

You should be able to replace the pen sound once root is available. My original Note 10.1 does the lightsaber sound. People at work get a kick out of it. You basically use a root enabled file explorer and replace the sound files. Pretty straight forward.

I went with the new Note 10.1. My wife is getting a 256GB Surface Pro 2. Something tells me she is going to have the better experience.
After the second update a few days ago it's butter smooth now.

She will, until she tries getting apps to do stuff or really customizing her experience. The Surface Pro 2 is a diesel device, but I hate the Windows 8 mobile ecosystem.
Windows...hmm where have I heard this name before?
Im thinking about Note 10.1 2014, but I wanna see if Google will annouce a new 10in tab on 24th, because I rather get that.

I'd highly recommend upgrading your S Pen. I ordered and just received my Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel. The difference is night and day, the weight, size and feel is much better. The button is almost flush too. I got it just for Sketchbook and really makes a difference.

I've heard there was some offset issue with the Bamboo Stylus Feel, are you not running into that issue? Also which model did you get (color)?

Ask yourself if you will use the s-pen at all. If the answer is no, wait it out or just get the current Nexus 10. If the answer is yes, get this. The screen is GORGEOUS, it runs really well, and feels INCREDIBLE in the hands. I don't care what comes out on the 24th, I will not regret this (and I could 100% return this tab if something does come out).

Also rumor is that there isn't any hardware being released on the 24th event.
An announcement will be good enough, and if stuff does become available to purchase, that is just icing on the cake for me.

I did notice some offset. The offset for me is when I have the pen angled. Depending on how you hold will determine the offset. The s pen does seems more accurate. But the Wacom feels better in hand. I haven't done any detail work with the wacom, just loose sketches. I could see using both. I know there is the Samsung version, maybe that one doesn't offset as much, not sure. I was gonna order one to test out.

There isn't supposed to be any hardware announcement either.

I don't think it's that simple. I like stock Android and all but I worry about stability and quality control issues with nexus 10 tabets. I hope I'm wrong for others sake but I had a bad experience with the last nexus 10. Bad light bleed on two of them and crashing issues. I went into purchasing thinking was was not going to use the Spen that much but man am I glad it's there. It's just nice. Plus I'm really digging all the extras like the dual apps in split screen for example.

Fair point. Even when custom ROMs come out I'm not going to put AOSP on here because I really like the Samsung extras. I'm really amazed at this tab. It's phenomenal all around. We get something like hyperdrive or Revolution HD and it'll be spotless.
Also, I hope people are taking advantage of the Samsung app "Watch On" that came installed.
Uses the ir blaster to change the volume and channels with a cable guide that you can just press what you want to watch and it changes it for you. Also if you have a newer smart TV you can watch what you are watching on TV on your tablet. It's like magic lol. I have my tv, cable box, AV receiver, and blu ray player all set up a land It's makes for an awesome experience

I found this application to be just awful. I ended up using "Smart Remote" as I just could not stand the interface. I don't have cable, just a media center, so giving me all sorts of info on whats on TV is useless. I wish there was a way to turn that stuff off, as I may use it then.

In depth review of the Note Pro 12.2 KitKat

I just love her (mobiletechreview) in depth reviews and felt like sharing! After watching or sweeping through I feel like I know everything about a device. This is of course interesting to us because KitKat on Note 10.1 2014 will most likely look very similar to this minus one or two "pro" features.
And I really like what Samsung has done to the general feel of their new Tablet Touchwiz! I'm gonna use Nova launcher anyway for homescreens but stuff like notification center or settings do look good. IMHO.

I'm using the magazine UI and it feels very responsive, I have no complaints.

Yes im using it on the Note Pro 12.2
It does not lag like the 10.1 2014, it could be the new KIt Kat or they actually improve performance on the UI, Hope when they release the update for the 2014 10.1, it will also benefit from the nice performance improvement.
I see zero lag on the 2014, but so far find the battery life for my comparative use very lacking.
Performance is equal to my stock Excite 7.7 and iPad 4 which are virtually instantaneous for both UI and app use.
I'm loving this new Tablet. The screen is amazing and the magazine ux is pretty cool. Didn't think it be much of an upgrade over the 10.1 2014 but it really is. Honestly they probably should have skipped the 10.1 2014 all together and just came out with the pro line. Battery is definitely better as well. Not sure it's really worth the full $750 I'm on the fence there..but I'm an early adopter I have to have my electronics obsession filled regularly so perhaps to me it is. Build quality maybe questionable.. It's definitely not in iPad league as far as that goes. But I still love it, definitely a unique device. It feels like a laptop without the keyboard if that makes any sense.
