I'm beating myself up over her thinking about if it want the Nexus 7 or not. I remember having the first nexus 7 when it came out and I barely used it but now the specs on this new one looks pretty impressive especially with the talks of the screen. Just wondering how much I will use it if I use my Note 2 for everything. Just wanted some input.

I have both...and trying N7 out for a week or 2.
If it was one or the other It'd come down to the T-Mobile N7 vs the Note 3. Having both is really redundant.
We note users like big screens so we'd definitely look at replacing for that reason.! ...screens great on N7.
Not having S-Pen is not an issue with me.
Speed wise they're not that much different (course my Note is rooted, this is not).
On a either-or basis tho the camera would definitely swing me to the Note 3. It'd be great if the camera hardware were hackable!
As of this moment, I'll have the Note 3 come September, not the Nexus 7.

Note 2 owner here. Admittedly the N7 has taken over most of the phone duties when I'm at home, the screen resolution and real estate lends itself to a much better browser experience since full webpages are still legible without zooming thanks to the high res screen. Also, the IPS display on the N7 produces much more natural colors - which is an added bonus to photographers like myself...photos are way too saturated to view/edit on Samsung amoled screens.
So ultimately, it worked out great for me mainly because of the screen - high res and more accurate color reproduction means I can finally do some light photo editing on a portable device! Gaming is great, native controller support, vanilla android works smoothly, and the tablet itself is just small enough for me to take along as a 2nd device. Also, phone battery now lasts longer so I can worry less when I have to go out and do something later in the day. I do have to point out that at this point, my Note 2 still outperforms the N7 on some tasks. Maybe because it's got less pixels to push?
The N7 is definitely still worth a look if you're a Note 2 user, imo.
When I got my N2 in November 2012 I immediately stopped using my original N7. Both devices were so similar in size that it felt redundant to use the tablet. I sold the tablet and used the phone as my only device. I eventually sold my N2 because it was too big to carry around. I never used the N2 stylus anyway. I replaced it with a Galaxy S4 which fits in my pockets much better and only half an inch smaller in screen size. plus it's 1920x1080 and higher pixel density. I got the new N7 and I love it. The N7 screen is much nicer than the N2. I think having the S4 for use on-the-go, and the new N7 for use at home is the best combo. I also like Touchwiz on phones and prefer vanilla Android on tablets.

The new N7 with that sexy display is just much more comfortable to do casual browsing, reading, and video watching on. I'd recommend picking one up from Best Buy and seeing if it works for you. If not, they have a great return policy of course.

Yeah I think I'm going to go with it. I'm probably good off with the 16gb because I don't play games at all on my devices and plan on using it for mostly browsing and watching my device dogfights and things like that on it. Think I'm going to head to Best Buy when I get off and check it out. Thanks everyone for your advice!!

I also have both and the screen on the N7 has made it my go to device for everything. If I could put a phone line on this thing I'd get rid of the Note 2. I'm aware of the phone calling apps BTW.
Edit. Go with the 32g model if you're going to keep it for a while. Just my opinion.

Yes the specs on the N7 are an improvement but you probably won't use the new N7 more if you do everything with your Note 2 already. Save your money and forget about it unless you're just looking for a reason to spend money and get a shiny new toy just for the sake of having one. If that is the case, just do it and don't ask people from thw Internet for affirmation.

I've got the Note 2 and both N7. I've been using my note 2 more but that's because I couldn't figure out what rom to stick with on my original N7. My coworkers still laugh though at the size of the note 2. They pretty much compare it to a tablet

Own both. Note II is good but N7 2013 is better and what I've been using more of lately.
I have both and haven't had a chance with the N7 much. I'm trying to use my phone less and the N7 more at home for everything just because then I don't have to keep lugging my laptop home from work all the time, and just remote in.
But wow...talk about screen difference! Going back to my note 2 after looking at the N7...it's kind of painful.
when I get off in a few minutes I'm going to my local games top to pick up a 32gb version. They had 1 left!

I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1.. I had the same issues with it as you did. Yes it's a big difference from the N7 but for me it made ALL the difference. Portrait mode is perfect to use and type on and landscape mode is perfect for web browsing.. 10.1 was just too bulky for me.. I always felt burdened by it like I was carrying around a computer monitor and not a convenient and productive piece of technology.
My Tab 10.1 now sits on the shelf as I wait for pershoot to pump out some new CM10 builds for it and I plan to just use it as a media center interface. Meanwhile me, my Nexus S and N7 are attached at the hip
I had a 10" HP Touchpad with CM9 that I really liked, but after using a friend's Nexus 7 for a little while, I decided to sell the Touchpad while they were still selling on eBay fora decent amount and buy a Nexus 7. I have had the Nexus for a couple weeks now and have found I use it a lot more than I did the Touchpad since it is a lot more convenient. Also, now when I pick up my wife's iPad, it feels HUGE and unwieldy!
I have not missed the larger screen at all.

I like the 7" size, as it seems to be a happy medium. It's easy to hold with one hand and read. Its comfortable in landscape mode and much more comfortable for playing games. It's easy to carry and to toss into my purse or a pack. I don't watch movies much but it's a nice personal size for viewing. My other device is a HP touchpad and it feels large and heavy in comparison.

Sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB WiFi for the money to buy an 8GB Nexus7, and didn't regret it for an instant. It's actually portable, it's ridiculously fast, and while it has a smaller screen than the GTab10.1, it's the same resolution, which results in a much more crisp picture.
We now have two Nexus7's in the house: an 8GB and a 16GB. We'll be adding a 32GB as soon as they start showing up for purchase.

Nevermind the GTAB 10.1 had a bug in portrait mode that caused it to lag like hell.. Even their ICS update had it. Samsung really screwed the pooch with the tab 10.1.. It seriously under performed considering it was a dual core tegra 2.

Sold mine as soon as the n7 came out. Hadn't made it to ICS yet. I hear they run VERY well on JellyBean though, especially with all that TouchWiz crap stripped away
I was a hardcore 10 clincher, had four tablets in the 10 inch variety and loved my prime and keyboard. But 7 inches is perfect for almost everything I use a tablet for. In fact since the nexus 7 launched, I got mine before preorders shipped but I dunno the date, I haven't used anything that would be better on a 10 inch screen.

I know alot of people that once they got a 7 ince tab, mainly the Nexus 7, they no longer used/wanted to use, their 10 inch, as it was uncomfortable, heavy and just too big to be portable.
7 inch is the way to go, I personally think 8 inch would be perfect, but 7 inch it is.

I personally enjoy the size, it works for me immensely. And is super portable.
It's not the size of the tab that's important, but the skill with which you wield it.
I like the 7" and find it very easy to transport. But it is important to give your eye's more "visual breaks" and look arround more. I seem to get more eye fatigue with the 7" if I'm not careful.
So to add another overused phrase to this thread.
Be careful how you handle that 7" tab, you could go blind.

I would also say "yes", however. It's a great little device.
I had an iPad 3. I love the size of the Nexus 7. The screen is not as bright and vivid, but I still ended up selling my iPad and keeping the Nexus 7.

I just sold my TouchPad which was running a solid version of CM9 and gave my wife my Nook Color which is running CM10 in favor of my Nexus 7. After a year with a 10" tablet and a couple of years with the Nook Color I determined that the 7" form factor works best for me. I prefer the build quality of the Nook Color over the Nexus but I like the size of the Nexus and of course the updated hardware specifications better than the Nook. I haven't put my Nexus down long enough to establish the battery life under normal conditions (I have only had it for 10 days) but it seems reasonable. The first few nights it drained more than I wanted with the screen off but after turning off sync on various applications, the GPS (when I am not using it), and setting the WIFI to sleep when the screen is off it holds it's charge pretty well. Rating: :good::good:
I came from a 10" touchpad. I rarely even use my laptop anymore. So rarely my girl wants me to sell it. I love my tab...its perfect.

I had my N7 since July and it took me a few days to like the smaller size but now I love it. There is only one App on my Apple that I want that isn't on Android but it is a game and not a big deal.
For $250 you can get 32GB N7 or for $299 32GB w/ cell modem that are all cheaper than any iPad. N7 has a lot of specs better than the new iPad Mini that would cost $559 to match the same features as the $299 N7.

okay to good as standalone device. GREAT when it's connected to wifi.
It has been more than enough for web browsing compared to using my phone, and for gaming it is great.
you should wait a week or so and get the 3g version.

I have both, rarely use the N7
I had the Nexus 7 first, had the note 2 a couple weeks now and haven't used the 7 since..I am sure i will go back to it and play more but with the note 2, don't feel the 'need' for the nexus 7 now...

To those of you with both devices; do you find that the GN2 is large enough to use as your primary surfing device for extended periods of time? I am looking to replace my iPad 3 completely. Since I have the GN2 I am wondering if it will fill this role without getting a Nexus 7.

Im fortunate enough to also have an ipad (am a bit of a gadget freak lol). My opinion is that the note 2 cannot totally replace my ipad. There are still things I prefer to use on my ipad because of the bigger screen. Web browsing for one, and the app store is quite a bit better.

I've got a 10inch Acer tablet and haven't touched it from the day I got the note 2
I sold my N7 few days after using my Note 2. Just didnt see a point in going back and forth for an extra 1.5 inch. Plust N7 lacks the feautures I now need and am used to.
But if you really want a tab get a note 10.1 or N10 but iPad is not worth it just because iOS sucks.

No, but then I didn't feel that way about the N7 either (which I sold after getting my GN2). So that's not really a difference between them if you ask me. On both devices, I could surf for short periods in landscape mode if I squint. Or I could surf on both devices for longer periods if I zoom, but that's annoying. Probably I could last a little longer on the N7 before getting tired of it, but I don't really think either of them are ideal devices for doing real heavy browsing of desktop-style web sites for long periods of time.
Personally, I think it makes a lot more sense to have a 10" tablet with the GN2, and that's the combo I have at the moment (I have an old Motorola Xoom, but I still love it). A 10" tablet really *is* different; you can browse like normal on one, read magazines, use real tablet apps, etc.
I don't think the Note II is different enough from the Nexus 7 to warrant having both, although it is true that unless you do some customizations, a lot of apps will automatically size themselves for phones on the GN2, which I find annoying. For example, GReader gives the tablet interface on the Nexus 7 but the phone interface on the GN2. Ditto for Expedia, which is actually really nice on a tablet. This despite both devices having 1280x720 resolution and only 1.5" difference in screen size. I think you can probably get around this by changing your dpi setting, but I've been kind of afraid to try that. In most ways the phone works really well totally stock. It's not exactly the same experience as the N7, but it's close enough that I think the N7 is mostly redundant.
I have a Nexus 7 and since I got the Note 2 I only use the Nexus to watch Netflix and Hulu.

I still watch Youtube on my 10 inch iPad 2 and browse, if whatever I'm looking for is difficult to find. Bigger is better for surfing. I don't know if I would use a 7 inch tablet though.
Have both, got the Note a couple of weeks ago and have found myself rarely using the 7 now.
It will get used for extended web sessions and movie use, plus my wife uses it a lot now she can prise it from my fingers

I got both too plus i also got the allshare cast dongle.
I use SGN2 for everything exept gaming.
I use Nexus7 for that.
Both devices can run everything i want , but gaming on the dongle is a bit laggy so the next best thing is nexus7
I also keep a second account for guests on that one , very helpfull and safe.
Youtube , movies on the dongle , regular use without dongle but still on the SGN2.
Browsing , forums e.t.c. i find SGN2 to be very nice , slightly better experience than nexus
Perphaps i enjoy the amoled more or its just light enough to hold with one hand durring tapatalk reading.
I usually don't use the Spen but i get mad when i need it and i hold the nexus
Ebooks on the other hand are much better on the nexus if you are into that
Pixel density and form factor are critical issues for you.
Another device must be of the same or better pixel density to improve your visual experience or you will realise its only a matter of eye distance.
7 inches is not significantly different from 5.5. Even reading pdfs would only be marginally better that too if you discount the added weight.
There is little option for fellows already possessing SGN2. Go for the Nexus 10 or the Ipad 4.

No, you shouldn't bother at all. I am using Note 2 and Nexus 7 and trust me, I mostly use one device at a time. Whenever Note 2 is on charging, I go for my iPhone 5 or iPad for my needs than using Nexus 7.
Galaxy Note 2 is a bit small compared to Nexus 7 but you get the fun of both tablet and phone in one device.

I bought two last week, no regrets. Works flawlessly and the amount of power you get for the money is amazing value. Having said that though, I wanted the N7. If you want the N10 and are only getting the 7 due to stock issues then you might end up feeling like you wish you had waited for the N10.
Decide what you really want and what purpose you want one for, then go for the one that suits. Unless you have money to burn of course.
Well I just bought a second one for my wife for Christmas - so I must think they are a good value.
From a value standpoint it truly can bit new beat. Especially if you plan to get the WiFi only version

My n7 gets less use since my n4 arrived. Pretty much 'cause most apps look and feel identical on it. If I had the n4 first, and knew in advance that there were very few tablet apps for the n7, I would have opted for an iPad.

I have an HTC One X with CM10 and an iPad retina and I just picked up a Nexus 7 because I finally convinced myself there was a use case for a 7 in form factor. Reading. I even have an eInk kindle as well, but the N7 is my go to reading device now. I don't care to read longform text on the iPad because it feels awkward reading single column text on a screen that big, and two column text doesn't work much better. But the N7 is much closer in size and, more importantly, weight to a real book, and it also allows me to access more content than my kindle, so the compromise is fantastic. I also admit that I may have a gadget addiction problem.

I think the N7 is the perfect size. I was in staples a few weeks back and they had the N7 and N10 side by side. Holding the N10 felt like I was holding a cafeteria tray and looked more like a device that you would prop up as a monitor and hook a mouse and keyboard to. This coming from a guy that's 6'3". Felt awkward in my hands. The N7 is the perfect size for my hands for typing on the keyboard. I can't see holding the N10 and typing while holding unless you hold it like a tray that waitresses do.
Isn't the only difference between the N7 and N10 is the screen size which is obvious and the rear facing camera? Other than that the same internals?
I'd say go for the N7. Bigger isn't always better unless you're a woman lol.

Depends on the size you need. I think 7" is perfect, not too small, not too big (unless you want something like ipad, go then n10 then). Afaik hw is the same, except for the camera and who takes photos with tablets anyways?

The 10 does have better specs than the 7, but not $200 worth IMO, and it's too large for my purposes, may as well carry my laptop around. I like the fact I can slip the 7 in my back pocket when I need my hands free (would never sit on it though).
As for being viable, definitely. I do believe it's quite possibly the best deal you can get for the money in the electronic world.

Hey guys I recently got a Nexus 7 but have noticed that it is nowhere as smooth as my Nexus 4 even when running Paranoid Android. I don't play video games and only use it to watch YouTube videos. I don't really think I need it. Unless you guys have some amazing ideas for me I'm probably going to get a refund on it.

I love having my N7. Use it with Apex launcher/stock rom/rooted while at home. It's so light and the screen is mesmerizing to me. Save the N4 for work/on the go. There's no way I could go back to only N4/laptop. I see a bit of lag every once in a while (was really bad with Nova) but must have a nice tablet now and hate the weight of all ten inch ones.
I use my tablet (A500) whenever I want to play or watch youtube videos, it's nice to have another device with the same options as your phone

OK. Here's my opinion on tablets in general. Seven inch tablets are made for those who can't afford a ten inch tablet. That doesn't necessarily mean people buy them because of that, it's just the target demographic. Now, seven inch tablets do come in handy when you need a device for FPS gaming or portability. They own that area. And the very best seven inch is the Nexus 7, so if you want a seven inch tablet, buy the Nexus 7.
But...in every other area 10 inch tablets win. Usually they're top of the line, have back cameras (if you need one), are much easier to type on, and generally have better screens. So in this area for Android you have a few flagship tablets such as the Nexus 10, Note 10.1, and Infinity. The Nexus 10 is having major light bleed issues. I picked up one and exchanged it to find the second had it worse. So I returned it and bought an iPad. Yes. An iPad. I would never buy an iPhone, but the tablet experience on an iPad is stellar. I'm still mesmerized by how smooth everything is and how well it works. So don't be an Android fanboy and exclude the iPad if you're considering going for ten inch tablets. It's quite possibly the best of them all (in my opinion, anyway).

A 7 inch tablet is evolution of the eBook readers to me.
EBook readers where extremely popular. Let's take the basic form factor and make a it full fledge tablet. So yeah you can use it as a eBook reader and...movies,internet, email, games and everything else that full android device can do.
it depends on your routine.
if you have a nexus 4 you don't need a nexus7, nexus10 yes with its display, prefect for ebooks and Paranoid android, ,the nexus4 and its large screen is fine, I will get a 10 inch when its here, just for reading at night, I use my phone more so tablets are excess luxury goods

Yes, 7 inch aren't aimed at people who can't afford 10" tabs, they are aimed at people who want a more portable solution but a bigger screen than a phone.

Have owned an iPad 2 for a year now. Has been collecting dust ever since I bought Galaxy Nexus and then N4. Watching video? LOL @ Youtube fail. Website? N4 is ok. Playing games? too heavy. I'm still waiting for someone to suggest some use for me.
I don't feel a need for a tablet personally. I have a transformer which I used when it was newer than my phone. If i was to get a nexus 10 I may use it more than my Nexus 4. It just seems pointless to have a tablet and a phone when most of my usages are done on a desktop.
It depends what kind of a person you are. For me i use whatever is newer in my hands.

Which proves that you didn't read what I wrote. I said they were marketed towards those people. You don't see many (none that I can think of) seven inch tablets over $250, whereas ten inch tablets range from $250-$1000 depending on the model and storage. So, of course, seven inch tablets are getting better, but there are still none of them that are as powerful and "luxurious" as the high end ten inch tablets on the market.

It's opinion, rather than being true.
Don't think I'll ever buy another 10 incher as they are too big and clunky for general lounging about the house.
For me, the nexus 7 is perfect in terms of size, speed, utility for browsing and email etc. If I need to do any serious typing or work, that's when the tool for that job comes out ie. Iaptop rather than tablet.

I would never use an ipad because the design is beyond awful. Personally, i don't like the ios look. It's just me, but it's old, i had my ipod touch for years, I'm done with that look, and every app you get from ios follows the same rounded and glossy theme. I like squares, and i like matte. That aside though, you can barely put icons on the screen, which i guess doesn't matter because anyways because the reason why iblike my two bottom rows of 10 icons is so i can use widgets, which the ipad can't. I also dislike the back button. Unless I'm mistaken, it's still in the upper left? Which means that, right now as i type in portrait mode, i could not go back without setting my device down, repositioning my hands, pressing back, then reholding the device again. Same goes for the status bar (I'm using a kf2 i got from a raffle so it still has a classic status bar, and it's awful, i can't reach the touch of the screen, the idea is great on phones, bad on tablets, it's why they have a bottom status bar)
And in the very end, i like to tinker. I may be odd but in the end of the day i like to play with things. Break things. Get new themes, try new fonts, play with devs unique roms, see what my device can do. That's just so much better on android, especially being here at xda.
I just don't see anything the ipad really does right, uness you do like the look, then having that look across all apps would be nice for you, but the ui is still just annoying to use compared to android for tablets.

Actually, it's completely true. High end tablets such as the Infinity, Nexus 10, and iPad 4 have better hardware and generally better designs.

To each their own. But it's surprised me how much I've enjoyed my iPad 4 considering the only devices I've purchased in the past two years have been Android devices. The change is definitely welcome...to me, anyway.

Yes. 7 inches are better than 10 inches. I sold my transformer for the nexus 7 because the transformer was too large it wasn't all that comfortable for one handed use. It was useless on most games. Typing required the keyboard or pretyping finger stretches. The 7 allows you to do everything a 10 can do but without the bulk. The only benefit a 10 has is if you are sharing a video and therefore need more screen, or you are doing something that requires a lot of screen real estate.

if you care about having a larger screen for mobile gaming or browsing on the go, if its for home only use i see no reason for a tablet because at this point no tablet are as good at browsing, gaming (depends), or productivity as a full computer. in fact, i got an infinity with dock for school, and later exchanged it for a chromebook because its only a little heavier but works so much better for school because of its great keyboard and much better online google docs experience
