Keep in mind that they were playing a video for the duration of that test, so doing things like browsing the web will make the battery last longer. 6 hours of video playback doesn't sound terrible to me, my current tablet will hardly do 7 hours of screen on time in total of normal usage, and that's an android tablet with an ARM processor.

I'll be running a chunk of tests side by side with my existing Pro and the Pro 2 when mine gets here, if anyone wants side by side specific tests doing I will see what I can do...

I got my first full day of usage out of my new Pro 2, and I got above 10 hours of near constant use. It beat my old tablet (Which was an android tablet with a Tegra 2 ARM processor). Definitely impressed by the battery life on this thing.

Still waiting for mine to turn up, damn you, damn you all to hell...

That's one test. I've only had 1 full day with my SP2, but it's battery life is on par with the RT, which is a lot better than the SP1. I'd guess 7-8 hours for me, not running a lot of heavy processing tasks

I really wish I would have waited the two months for the Pro 2. Such huge improvements with battery life over the Pro I just bought, and all for just $100 more than I paid. I would feel a bit better had I saved more than that. Anyone want to buy a Pro 1 and a laptop so I can get the 2? LOL

10 hours sounds great. But was that with the screen on all the time? And if so, with what brightness settings? I've been discouraged by the reviews saying around 7 hours but I want to know the total possible screen on time on the lowest brightness with light tablet usage, i.e. no desktop apps, only modern UI IE for internet browsing. My nexus 7 2012 gives around 8h of screen on time with the lowest brightness and I'm fine with that.

Somewhere around 7 to 7.5 hours SOT. Auto brightness. Mostly metro UI, but I did go into desktop mode a tiny bit

I'm confused as to why people are still quoting battery life from a device thats not even in the same ball park, yes the Nexus is a nice device, almost had one myself but at the end of the day the Surface is an i5 device with 10" screen etc, if anything it should be compared more to an ultrabook, or more accurately to 75% of an ultrabook given its physical size and the associated battery size.

The concept of preferences and user scenarios is not some universal law. It is HIGHLY subjective. If I'd want an ultrabook I'd buy an ultrabook. I want a device that can act both as an ultrabook AND a tablet instead of having one ultrabook and one tablet. If the surface pro should be measured purely as an ultrabook then why do you think Microsoft didn't do an ultrabook? Comparing battery life is vital if you want to have a good idea of how the surface pro acts as a tablet. If you see the surface pro plain as an ultrabook, why not buy a "real" ultrabook instead?

Battery life is highly subjective, yet you are comparing a 7" ARM based tablet with a 10" x86 i5 tablet.
My point about Ultrabooks was more down to the spec of Ultrabooks being more or less the same as the Surface Pro, a damned sight closer than the spec of a Nexus by a country mile...

No I'm not, I'm comparing user scenarios. Specs is completely irrelevant. As I said, I want ONE device for all my needs. Is that really so confusing? Maybe you are a hardcore materialist or something but personally I'm a minimalist and I don't like to have several gadgets for different situations.

Spec's isnt irrelevant when you mention how much you get out of one device over another, you brought that up not me, all you needed to say was you wanted at least X figure, rather than mentioning Y hardware as that gives off the wrong impressions and suggests you are expecting something different.
As for one device, I had the RT, have the Pro now, and have the Pro2 on order, its a brilliant device in normal Pro guise, I want the Pro2 mainly for the extra RAM, the battery life to me makes no odds as I use it at home, and have a charger, I use it at work, I have a charger, I'm not out on the road long enough to worry about battery life that much although I do have a charger in the car as well.
I have completely ditched everything but my mobile phone since having the Pro, so if you are a minimalist then I dont see you having any issues, unless you are more road based than the 6+ hours a Pro2 will give you at which point a power cover, car charger or some other setup should do for your needs.

If you guys followed anandtech. Apparently the battery life is caused by firmware issues. Microsoft just pushed an update that fixed it. They did the same test and it boosted from 6 hours to 8 hours.

Now we're talking! Added anandtech to my bookmarks.
I do the occasional tour with the band I play in and some drives are longer than 6 hours. And you don't have access to power outlets at every place you stay so you might not be able to charge it every night so all the extra battery juice is welcome. And I don't trust 12V converters.

microsoft are offering an official in car charger for the surface. The surface charges at 12V anyway so really all it needed was something to regulate the car electrical systems actual voltage of 13-14v down to 12. However it isnt hitting shelves until early 2014. It is listed on here though: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/accessories/browse#accessories4

Xoom Screen and Battery performance vs ipad 2

My wife uses ipad2 and i am using xoom. Noticed some glaring performance issues for the battery and the screen:-
1. The battery on the ipad2 can last twice as long as the xoom. I can get 3 days use of battery from the ipad2 compared to the xoom for about the same usage. When i use the xoom for about 5hours - mainly to do basic web serving, read books, with 3G turned on (rest of wireless turned off), i have about 40% battery left after 24hours. That does not seem normal to me, battery reports that the battery juice is used by the screen mostly (80%)...but my screen brightness is less than 30% level.
2. The you tube HD video clarity on the ipad2 is definitely more superior in color richness , clarity and sharpness. Turning up the screen brightness to 100% and activating the higher video quality in the xoom helps a bit but the improvement just makes a dent. I have read that the ipad screen is better...but what i see is a clearly superior ipad screen performance.
I almost hate to say this....ipad2 is a winner as far as the battery and screen quality is concerned. Or my xoom is a dud and i should bring it back to motorola?
thanks
Lawrence
P/s - Saw this article on the xoom screen performance from gizmodo.com.au/2011/07/best-tablet-display-ipad-2-just-got-dethroned. Looks like i am better of reading books with xoom and watch videos on the ipad2.
Honestly the xoom's screen is good enough for watching videos. But to say your not going to use it for video's because of a small difference in the screen.(I've compared them side by side) Why not read books on the ipad?
My xoom lasts me 4 days on battery browsing and playing games for 4 hours a day. But I'm using wifi only.

Can the ipad2 install 3rd party music players?
Use Xbox controllers?
Mount cameras?
Use SD cards to play friends music?
As well as many other features.
Both have strong and weak points, just pick the one suited to you simple.

Hi,
I got the xoom for the reasons you have highlighted and am thankful to the XDA community for the support and the hacks. It makes the experience so much more fulfilling .
Ipad2 plays the youtube by default in HD mode while in the Xoom, you have to select this play mode. Having realized this solved the problem that was borne out of my ignorance.
I hope the Tiamat 2.1 improves the Xoom battery life, i am charging it almost daily now since it drops to below 40% after a day of use.

I think he's trying to be sarcastic, lol.
If you're doing anything other than listening to music, the Xoom will give +/- ten hours of battery life. That's pretty good. I charge at night on my speaker dock and use it as my alarm clock. It's ready to go in the morning and lasts through the day with battery to spare.
Use SetCPU or CPU Master to set battery saving profiles if rooted with custom kernel/rom.

So you get 16 hours of battery life out of your xoom? Honestly, sell it back to Motorola for half a million or so, so they can find out how you doubled the normal battery life.
Sorry, I really like my xoom and am a Android "Fanboy", but we should at least try to be realistic.
I don't get what all the fuzz is about anyway. The Ipad2 has a better battery life, which is even written down in the specs. And that the xoom's screen is **** (relatively, considering the price class) has been mentioned right from the start. So, nothing new to see here
Tiamat 2.1 ROCKS
Hi,
Using Tiamat 2.1 with
1. Used Set CPU to increase to 1.5Ghz (settings = ondemand). Performance increase very noticeable and quadrant score has increased from 1800 to 3500!
2. Battery life has also improved, half a day use drops about 20% but will take me a few days to test this out for a fact. I suppose this because Tiamat has cleaned out the bloat ware Thanks ROM Team Tiamat! Also used Auto Memory Killer (got this advice from Xoom Heaven thread, Thanks diablo2224!). And all this with 1.5Ghz CPU setting!
I support android, use SGS2, SGS1 (wife using this) and Xoom. XDA is a great place where the majority of the views are objective and useful for the reader, to make informed decisions.

Lol seriously such a hassle to plug it in over night! Mine runs a couple days with heavy use thanks to rooting it and running setcpu...doing this to solve Androids battery guzzling from the factory issue I have a tab that can outlast the iPad, but more importantly excels in several other categories. When the source code comes out things will only get far better...this is a device for real techies...you want a pretty screen and the internet without ever getting the true potential with your device...buy a fadPad
Oh and stock I never had a problem with a full day battery life on this thing which is really all you need, but if you put in the twenty minutes of extra work you could have way better battery life...as far as the screen crispness it is subjective...some folks swear the iPad is better some say xoom has better quality but darker screen...the difference is minimal in my opinion and using better third party players helps...rant over
I'll be the 1st to admit that the iPad2 has a better display than the Xoom, but hell so do most of the other recent android tablets out there. I bought iPad2's for my daughters and I could never move to the darkside. I rely too much on google's free tools, being on the road so much I literally could not live without google maps and it's free voice navigation.
Make no mistake, I'm just as disappointed in the Xoom's display as anyone else and the still absent LTE upgrade (I know it's finally coming) have turned me off from Motorola hardware completely. Since VZW essentially gave me a 4G hotspot and allow me to use my Xoom as a wifi only device, I can't really complain anymore. I won't be leaving Android anytime soon, especially for iOS

Can't wait for Android battery efficiency to catch up with Apple (small rant)

I own a Transformer Wi-Fi 16GB model. I have owned this since August when i got it for my birthday. I am a Huge android fan boy, recently at work for a thank you gesture, our small dev team received 4 ipad2s as a thank you from management.
I gave the iPad to my fiancée who is pretty much all Apple, (iPhone, mac pro personal and mac pro laptop work and now ipad2)
Last night i just charged both devices to 100%.
On Transformer (no dock) I turned unit off and turned back on and started NO applications.
on ipad2 i did nothing, just charged and removed it from charger first.
Removed Transformer from charger afterwards.
Went to bed at midnight.
woke up at 8am
IPad2 was still at 100%
Transformer - 95%
iPad2 is on latest iOS 5.01
Transformer - is on latest 8.6.5.19 and CPUSpy showed 8 hours of Deep Sleep
So the Transformer is performing as it should battery wise it just pales in comparison to the ipad2 and the battery management shows.
I can use the iPad2 very moderately throughout the week and never have to charge it.
the Transformer i have to charge every few days with the same moderate usage.
just such a bummer, everyone around me is jumping ship to Apple iPhones and iPads
here i am loyal to Android since the G1 when it launched, Mytouch, and my now Samsung Vibrant and Transformer Tablet.
I feel sometimes I am on the losing team. I am and WILL hold out for Ice cream sandwich but if ICS doesn’t perform like it should, I fear I may have to jump ship too.
there is only one thing i hate the most about Android.... the Lag/stutter in apps and home screen swipes.
iOS never does this at all yet every iteration of Android always has some type of frame rate/lag in the system.
yes i know people say Root and get on another rom but why should I have to? ios people don’t have to do that, their OS just works with no lag so why cant Android get rid of their stutter?
ok rant over.
You said you opened it and started no apps. But most apps auto start up on boot. Are you using a task killer?

Not sure a difference of 5% qualifies as "pales" Also Transformer is running multiple apps in background from last use. ipad most likely not running any if not started during this session.
And what is the size of each battery? Did you take that into account?

no i dont use a task killer, i used to on gingerbread andd froyo roms on my phone but after hearing everyone come down with the fire from hell like rain if they found out you were using a task killer on Honeycomb (because honeycomb is supposed to be great at App Management) i dont use a task killer.
the only apps i have on my transformer are the default apps and words with Friends.
also verified while charger was still plugged in and after tf101 was rebooted, that the recent apps or current runnin apps icon showed no apps running (im sure there were some other core android apps running in memory on boot up)
Also iPad2 was rebooted as well. i work in QA at my software company so i pay attention to detail and steps and made sure that both devices were as close to a specific state as possible for this test. in a nice world i would have taken an average with different app scenarios but i didnt feel like it for this personal test.
i the Device is in Deep Sleep then power and app management should be superb and they are for Android but compared to iOS app and power management not so much.
i even loaded PULSE RSS feed aggregator on both devices and the experience is night and day.
nice fast and fluid on the iPad2
on the TF101 with the same feeds and pages, very slugish and laggy and takes more time to draw each individual image in the windows.

Pales when combined with my ipad2 usage over a week compared to my Transformer usage over a week.
i can go over a week with no charge with an iPad2
i cant go more than 2-3 days with out a charge with a TF101
so deep sleep drain with nothing running on a freshly charged device showign 5% drain over night is a positive indicator of where your battery usage is headed with this device.

Im sure this would make a difference throughout a week period (which might be why i need a charge quicker over a week period vs. the ipad)
however i would expect if a device is in deep sleep, that its power/app and battery management would be a little better on par thats all.
i am in no way trying to start a war which i can feel is about to come, not looking for people to come down on me.
I am a true Android devoted user, i just can see the differences between the OS's with small things.
overall the Android experience satisfied so much more than the ipad does which is why i did not keep it and let the fiancee have it but there are some things to be desired from the iPad2 thats all.
Are you honestly *****ing about losing 5% battery over 8 hours? Really? Not to mention you were apparently running CPUSpy, so obviously the tablet wasn't completely idle as you have tried telling us 5000 times.
I sell iPad 2 devices and haven't seen this amazing comparison between the two devices in regards to battery life... My Transformer has lasted longer than the iPad many times so I don't know, every device is different I guess!
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
i dont care what your running, when you start up android, basically every app you have auto starts up. that is why when your phone starts up you cant just hop on and use it that second. get a task killer. if you want to do a test like this, please do it correctly before ranting to the community.
1. each device fully charged
2. kill all running tasks/apps on each device
3. either do the exact same thing on each device(with the same wifi/3g or whatever) or keep them idle and only check every hour
theese arent the best ways to test but there a whole lot more accurate then what you were doing
No one should be a fan of anything. If you think having better battery life is the most important part of your tablet experience, then get the ipad 2.
For me, the flexibility of android trumps the ipad's battery life. But that's just me.
This is capitalism. We shoudn't have a team mentality here. If you think the ipad suits your needs better, then get it. No drama here.
ok a few problems with that rant first as someone above said you were using cpu spy which uses resources and seccond turning on and off the tablet is the largest and quickest way to lose battery. when i reboot i expect to loose about 3% battery because of the power required so that 5% is perfectly reasonable

Well, you know, I read this, and I can't help but think, and sorry to be rude but... honestly, "who cares????". Are you away from electricity for more than 2-3 days at a time more than once a year? Maybe you like taking week-long camping trips to campsites with no electricity? Maybe? I don't know, but for most people I know, 2-3 days is tons. I just charge mine up overnight, so I never have any downtime due to charging. I'm struggling to see what the big deal is. I mean, yes, 2-3 days is less than a week, but does this really affect you?
Cheers!
I don't really think it's possible to match iOS in battery life...
1. It's real multi tasking on Android, apps consumes more power
2. Android itself is not as efficient as iOS (java vs Objective-C)
I would be skeptical of any device that after 8 hours (assuming you sleep eight hours) still reports 100% battery.

It's not impossible, my captivate does this with certain firmware.
3 points I want to bring up.
1 age of battery. It sounds like you have had the TF longer than the ipad. Which may say that the battery has not been calibrated correctly yet. Also older batteries lose their charge.
2 multitasking. Android actually leaves open apps and processes running. Ios will freeze or suspend them. Android's approach will use more battery.
3 your approach at testing such stats could use some improvement. For one, you could look at the processes running in stead of the apps or the open window list. That list is very innacurate at showing what is actually open.
Lastly imho how long either of these stay on is not really a point I would consider bickering about. For what the TF and ipad do the battery life is well past my expectations. Laptops and netbooks seem like a waste of money now for a good portion of the population in comparison to the computing power, portability and battery life of a tab.

These are just some basic stuff on PC.
I own an iPad 1 and a transformer. I use my iPad most days and my transformer about two or three times a week. The iPad still last longer. I don't see why everyone is so defensive about it, the iPad does last longer.
They OP said how he feels and that the didn't want to start a war. I don't understand why every thread is criticized by someone. End mini rant.
I have the OG iPad and the TF. The battery is better on the iPad. However the keyboard dock and additional charge time is nice. We can get into battery size and calibration and how OS runs background apps and battery drain. I'm just saying battery wise I agree with you, but compared to the Galaxy Tab and Dell Streak 7 I'm pretty pleased with the TF battery. I wish I could do that with my Motorola Atrix.
I'm ok with custom roms. They are fun and can help also with battery life.
Best of luck.

I completely with this. My experience with the ipad tells me the same thing. Battery does last longer with the ipad. That said, to me all the advantages of android outweighs (by a lot) the battery disadvantage.
Again, to the op. If you feel battery is the most important thing about a tablet, then I recommend you go with the ipad. I am not a fan of anything. I simply want what's best for everyone.

So I was just wondering..

How does the best that apple has to offer (4,4s,5 whatever) compare to our Nexus 4 in terms of screen on time. I see 4-5 hours screen on which I read is normal. 2 1/2 hours if playing a big game like The Sims 3. I can't seem to find a straight answer through searching so I was hoping a well versed Android user can tell me how many hours of screen on time that a healthy iDevice achieves on average.
They actually magically have some great battery. That is if their on a bugless ios version. From all the past idevices I've had I get more than average battery. I guess it depends on the user.. As for charging they charge hella quick.

Great question
Ios battery life is better simply because it's much simpler compare to avoid complex os with true multitasking. N4 also has to support a more powerful chip and bigger screen.
Sent from my Nexus 4
Yeah, you really can't compare. N4 has: Bigger screen, more powerful processor, faster gpu... the iPhone has better battery life most likely because it is better optimized and has a far smaller screen.
I really don't care about what you can and can't compare. I would just like to know what real users experience on an iPhone in terms of screen on as I've always been an Android user.
Also the iPhone 5 does have a 4 inch screen, dual core and 1gb ram so I'd expect it to last longer as well as not be a contender with the N4 in performance. Sims 3 on the N4 is unbelievable.
I don't want to have to register on another forum and would just like to hear from a real user.
I don't know about that. I am surrounded by people who use iPhones, and everyone of them think that their battery life is ****. I reckon that at this point every smart phone (apart from the Note II which has a huge battery) just have crappy battery life.

Wow I just did a search on Note II average battery life and am seeing many screen shots with 8 hours! If it weren't for the facts that I don't want to carry a tablet in my pocket everyday and my N4 (and Gnex before it) never once has come close to running out of battery before coming home at night, I may consider the Note 3 or current phablet as my next phone in a few years.
Still would like an answer to my original question, though.
Anyone?
If you check the Anandtech Nexus 4 review (I can't post a link as I'm a new user) it compares the the 4, 4S and 5 to the Nexus 4 in browsing tests. For all devices screen brightness was set to 200 nits however the nexus is stock. In short you'll get about twice as much browsing time out of an iPhone 5 as you will from a stock Nexus 4 on mobile data. On wifi you'll get about 1.6 times. Although it's not a "screen-on" test it's a good gauge of battery life.

The iPhone5 does consistently great in battery benchmarks.
The Web Browsing performance (what matters most IMO) is hands-down incredible.
My guess is that the smaller screen and highly optimized CPU are responsible.

[Q] upgrading from nexus s to nexus 4

at the moment i've got a nexus s and am seriously considering moving on to a nexus 4, i was wondering if anybody else has made the same move as i would like to know how is the battery life on the n4 compared to the ns. i assume it will be worse but i'm hoping it isn't that much of a difference. thanks

made the switch about a week ago. for me the battery life is definitely better. take note that the nexus s only had a 1500mah battery. the phone is a bit big but im quickly getting used to the size. this phone is also lag free.
thing that bothers me is that the phone gets really hot. mine hits 43 degrees celcius when playing games. im thinking of rooting to undervolt it.
The N4 is slightly more power hungry i would say but it is nothing a custom rom cant fix.
my previous device was a Nexus S. I made the switch when the S started to lag/freeze real bad and the battery started draining rapidly. I'm not one to switch devices every year but I'm glad I waited for the N4. Performance is buttery smooth, screen size is awesome, and battery life is excellent. Only minor gripe is that after rooting, it seems my phone sucks up more juice..but could be an isolated incident.

43 degrees is not hot... I'm not sure if you're talking case temp or die temp but put it in perspective - the SandyBridge quad core in my desktop PC doesn't throttle 'till 97 degrees C and the ATI GPU in the same system is similar (not that I'd let them get that hot, but Intel and ATI call it 'safe') Obviously this varies from chip to chip, and a CPU running at 80 degrees C is going to make a tablet or phone pretty difficult to hold on to but I'd imagine the limits they've defined are more about protecting the user and the battery (Li-Ion batteries don't like getting hot...) than the SoC itself. Also, the power consumption of a silicon transistor is directly proportional to its temperature, voltage and switching speed. If you let the device get too hot, battery life would go south quite rapidly.
Without undervolting, the Tegra 3 in my Nexus 7 will hit 70+ under simultaneous GPU/CPU load and this is how Google/Asus/NVidia shipped it, so seriously... Don't worry. I don't have an app that can monitor temps on the N4 and neither do I want to know so I'm not about to start fishing about for thermals in sysfs, although I'm sure it's cooler with a 200mV CPU undervolt than stock
I once peered into a rack owned by a client of mine to see one of the servers with a bright red flashing light on it... I asked the guys "how long has this been happening?!" - 4 years of running under high CPU loads at 90 degrees with a ceased fan wasn't enough to kill it, I doubt much will.
ok thanks for the replies was a bit worried that the battery life would be considerable worse but you've set my mind at ease, nexus 4 here i come :good:

With the right ROM and kernel, the Nexus 4 is giving me the best battery life of any Android phone I've yet owned. Admittedly, it was just light browsing and youtube-watching, but I got 7 hours screen-on through my last charge cycle... Which is double what I got out of my One X with the same kind of usage!
You won't regret it Just don't put it down on even slightly slanted glossy surfaces with no case covering it... LG appear to have invented the perpetual motion phone!

Wow, still can't quite reach seven hours. Most I've had is about six and a half.

Made the jump myself about a week ago, my Nexus S was starting to lag quite badly and reboot itself a lot. Nexus 4 is leaps and bounds better, no lag, love the screen and battery life seems a little better but not much to be honest, might try rooting and see if it makes a difference with a custom kernal. Very pleased with it overall. Only thing I dislike is the lack of a removable battery and lack of sd card slot but will have to live with it.

Pixel does not seem like it is selling so well.....

I actually posted this same post in the XL section by mistake, here is where I would get the proper feedback:
After reading all the forums on XDA I decided to go with the Pixel XL. I have been on a
waiting list for 2 weeks now so I am assuming these are backordered big time.
In the same instance I check to see what the wait is for the regular Pixel and it keeps going
down. Today you can order a 128 gb black and get it in 2 weeks, The XL I still cannot even order
it. I am guessing everyone is making the same conclusion that the XL model is the prefered model.
Those of you with the Pixel, what are your thoughts? I am afraid of the battery life of the Pixel vs the XL.
That is my number one concern.
When do you think we will see any more stock on the XL?
CC
I don't have either phone. I did order the pixel and not the xl version. I ordered it from Google and I'm waiting till November 23 for it to arrive. I think it is doing as well the xl version. I called Verizon and I could get it sooner but the monthly payments on Verizon don't allow though to pay a little more to pay phone off early.
I was worried about the battery life as well. It looks like people are at least getting 4-5 hours of screen on time. That's enough for me. I just want a smaller phone. I've had the 6p and the S7 edge and I prefer a phone the size of the iPhone 7. I just don't want an iPhone.

Well availability doesn't tell us anything at all, it accounts for no variables. As far as preferred model the XL should definitely be it, considering the sizes of the best selling Android phones. The Pixel is rare for being a top-specced one handed device.
Got the pixel. Battery life is 2 days easy. I love it.
Is 4-5 hours of SOT out of the Box enough for you? --> take it!
I really enjoy the snappiness and the quality.
Awesome, but expensive device!
Cheers
I came here expecting actual numbers, left disappointed.
Infact Google is having hard time completing orders, they have a very good demand at the moment for both models!

Battery life is really good. I am at the end of my first day with full charge, currently 42% left with 4h11m SOT. I would put it on par with iPhone 7 plus (which is the phone I came from).

You do realize that the bigger screen will consume more power, don't you?

Smaller one.
I've got the phone for a few more days now and I am averaging 5-6 hours SoT. Certainly not as good as my initial post, but still very, very good I would say.
I don't do a lot of crazy stuff on my phone, just a lot of Hangouts, Redditing, some browsing on Chrome, and checking ESPN (+fantasy) for scores. Some music and reading every once in a while. 'OK Google' is always on and I have 2 Google accounts + 1 Exchange account syncing. High accuracy location on.
I have used a lot of Android phones in the past (as recent as 6P) and this is the first time I don't have to tinker with every single setting to get usable battery life. I am very impressed.

I have had a large majority of the main stream Android phones to exist and to this day I have NEVER gotten SOT life like this. I simply do not get how this is possible. Now, with my Pixel I still get a maximum 2 hours of SOT. Do you use your phone non stop all day? I think I get good battery life, my phone will survive 2 days with around 2 hours of SOT - I have just never seen such SOT even when I actually use my phone constantly all day.

I use my phone on the bus, during lunch and casually on the couch when I'm at home. I wouldn't say I am on my phone constantly.
From my experience the biggest battery issue about Android is always idle drain. Doze helps a lot but you really need to get rid of apps that drain unnecessarily, or apps that maintain calls to Google Play service frequently. Social network apps are really bad at this, which is why I make an effort to use their web apps as much as I can.

That's my thing. The only "social media" app I use is Instagram. I try really hard to have good battery life and my phone has really negligible idle drain. I think I just don't actually use it enough to see those SOT numbers.
for an average medium user, i think the phone will give 3-4 hrs SOT over 36 to 40 hours of usage easily.

I'm seeing a minimum of 3 hours SOT over 28-36 hours of mixed use on a regular Pixel (browsing, phone calls, Google Inbox, camera, some Facebook, some texting). I'm usually connected to Wi-Fi and a good 4G signal.
Had the Pixel for a week and even the first 24hrs (with lots of extra playing around + downloading all my apps) saw around 3.5 hours of SOT. This compares favourably with my previous Z5C (smaller, lower resolution, display).

I have the Pixel and I'm overly satisfied with it. Yes, it's pricey, but it's premium. In all honesty, all of these flagships could be cheaper (iPhone, S7, HTC10, etc), so i don't consider the price a negative. I personally love the minimal, straightforward industrial design. People say it looks like an iphone, mostly because that's what they are familiar with, but it just looks like most standard smartphones from the front. Personally, I think it far more reflects the HTC phones of today and before (they've been doing aluminum on the flagships longer than anyone), and is EXTREMELY well built. Regardless of how complex or not you fell the design to be, it's done very well. Otherwise, it's spec-ed as-well-or-better than any other device. Top notch SoC, camera, etc.
Hardware aside, the software is really the strength. I wont go into every nuance, but it just *feels* like a very complete package. Google has been very careful to tie up many of the loose ends that existed on the Nexus phones, and it has a very nice fit and finish to the UI and UX. The camera software is stellar, assistant is nice, the app drawer is much more cleverly handled than before, notifications menu and quick toggles are spot-on and well refined, and Google continues to deliver the ability to customize without burying settings or complexities into the system. my recent (albeit limited) experiences tinkering with iPhones has really left me wanting more from the UI. It used to "just work" but the menus and UI (aside from the main screen) i feel to be dated, overly-layered, and too confusing. App-level permissioning continues to be great....oh, and the camera...man, the camera. yes, a lot of it comes in post-processing the raw file (HDR+, for example), but it's undeniably awesome. I've accidentally taken pictures that turned out better than my most care constructs on past phones. Vlad has some things to say about that here. Anyway, i wont keep rambling, and could answer specific questions if you're interested.
tl;dr - get it. it's awesome, hardware is awesome and executed well, software is top-notch, phone is blazingly fast, i get 5hrs SOT easily in a single day usage (could stretch multiple days and still pull 3-4hrs), and camera is as good/better than anything out there.
disclaimer - i dont game on my phone so can't speak much to that type of performance.
cheers!

Thank you for the info above, my number one question is how is battery life. As a business person
syncing email/calendars, numerous calls, youtubing, web browsing, and texting. When I unplug at 6 am will I last until 9 pm or will I have to worry, This is my number one question for ALL.

I personally went with the Pixel over the Pixel XL after using the Nexus 6P and OnePlus 3 for the past 12 months. I wanted something with a smaller size for one handed use. So far, I have not been disappointed in the least bit.

I have my own consulting business and use 3 different emails for contact with various clients and 1 personal email address. 2 of these are exchange and 2 are Google accounts. With roughly 20 emails coming in/out per day, 1-2 client calls per day (each one lasting between 30 and 60 minutes), moderate texting and app usage, I've had absolutely no issues with the battery. I usually take about 20 minutes to charge my phone to full as soon as I get into my home office around 7AM each morning. From there it lasts me throughout the day/night with no issues. When I go to plug the phone in each morning it usually has about 25% - 35% battery remaining.
