Is the camera that bad in real life? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
This weekend I spent some time at a store playing with a G2 and was very impressed!
Excellent performance, right size and drop dead gorgeous screen.
I am considering getting one, but I have been reading some complaints here on XDA about the camera.
My question is how bad is the camera in real life?
I currently have an iPhone 5 and use the camera a lot. I shoot in all lighting conditions and everything from landscapes, city scapes, portraits, candids, food... I also shoot a lot of social pics in low light and indoors of friends gathering on coffe shops and clubs and such. In these situations, the iPhone delivers pics that are a bit noise, but plenty useful on the small screen and on Facebook and such.
I was just wondering if the camera on the G2 is on the same league as the iPhone 5, better, or worse.
What's your take?
Cheers!

In my experience autofocus in a dimly lit setting (e.g. in a restaurant) suck pretty hard. My girlfriend's iPhone 4 handily outperformed my LG G2 in focusing. Once the focus is set, however, it takes a good photo.

Its better of course...But the camera software needs fine tuning,in order to be really good. But to take a great pic you need to sit and learn the camera options. Its not like an iphone that has pretty much only one mode for almost everything.

Intelligent Auto mode works pretty well for just about any situation. The de-noise setting in low light situations is too much though.
You can use one of the custom camera's from here on the forums and it will give a bit better quality and it also will focus faster.

G2 crushes the iPhone 5s. (At least in this particular scenario)

5s on the left... stock camera apps on both. I used Intelligent Auto w/ Flash on the G2.

Dunno, I've tried a lot of pictures with flash on and without I.A. and the results were pretty bad.

Nice example.
That is the type of comparison I am looking for.
In good light, I am guessing they will both perform well.

I'd agree, most cameras in the modern age work pretty damn good in well lit conditions. I really like this camera... I had a Nexus 4 before and this is night and day as far as quality is concerned.

Surprisingly Nice Camera!

Hi guys, new to the Aria forums. Just wanted to say how impressed I am with this little device. I have an HTC EVO and just received an ARIA as my work phone and I am really loving it. I catch myself using it more than the EVO for a lot. It's definitely a snappy android device!
Craziest thing I noticed right off the bat is how nice shots are on the Aria. The Evo has a pretty lousy camera IMO but when I compared it to the Aria I was really shocked.

Same thing applies for video clips. The Aria wins. Definitely a cool device! It's nice to see a good little smartphone that's not getting as large as the recent devices out.
it seems like the Evo's pic has wrong focus (the bottle is out of focus) and it's a little overexposed.
Anyway, I have only the Aria, it's good to know how it's compared to others. Thanks.
You are right. But I've had the evo since launch, took a lot of pics. Aria still nicer imo. I should snag a more focused shot. Thanks.
It is definitely tough to grab a good focused shot on the EVO.
ARIA:
EVO:
awesome comparison looks like they focused too much on EVO's "speedy" hardware and not enough on the camera quality. i know majority of smartphone buyers want 3 things...1. resononable battery life, 2. easy mass texting 3. and camera quality good enough to replace a digital camera.
I should post two videos in comparison as well. The EVO owners all agree, our "720p camcorders" are lousy.

please do man. i would love to see the comparison and what the hype is about having 720p capabilities. so far as youtube videos go...recording with the standard video recording Aria is fine.
I love HTC and Android devices, and the EVO is a slick device but it is really lacking in a few key areas. Anyway I am away from my PC now so I won't be able to load any vids up. I should do some outdoor stuff because the low light vids I have I would say are borderline unwatchable.
seems to me the weakpoint of the arias video capabilites come not from the actual video, but from the audio capturing.
I just got my Aria, and the camera takes horrible pictures - very blurry (and I hold still and hold my breath). Are there some settings you would recommend?

Those pictures of the Rolling Rock are some of the best i have seen from an Aria.
The aria has a lot of potential. Despite it's processor. It's a snappy little device

my Aria takes reasonable quality pictures, esp. outdoors.
i once had blurry/foggy pictures turned out that the lens was dusty.

I recommend Camera 360 Pro - hands down AWESOME for taking photos! You can apply effects that'll make it look like you own a DSLR. And you HAVE to have a very steady hand - there is virtually no image stabilization for these devices despite what options you may see - the "software" image stabilization plain sucks. I usually find something to rest the phone on if at all possible for the best shots.
Here ya go.....
Once i let my camera gather enough dust to yield this picture
I dominated your screen; thats right.
After taking a few pictures with my Aria I was amazed at how crisp my pictures were.

Consistent blurry pictures with flash *big picture warning*

I can actually say I haven't been able to take 1 clear picture with flash. Is there something wrong with my phone? I have a fairly steady hand, I used to be a DSLR photographer and never had any problems. What gives to this? here are some examples, not even a moving object. These pictures are taken stabilized on my knee

R.I.P., Left Shift key.
As a rule, indoor pictures with the Evo are just poor quality. Outside, they're crystal clear, but even with the flash, when you're inside the camera is adjusting the exposure to the ambient light, which means grainy, blurry pics. There are some tweaks you can do to minimize this (white balance, exposure defaults, etc.) but in general it's just not that great.
Same with video: If you're inside, the camcorder drops down to, like, 8-10fps capture. Outside it does much better. It's all about the ambient lighting.
the lighting looks bad, and plus you gotta click in the pic to focus it and then hold down the shutter button untill you see your pic, thats the only way i can take pics

Check out this article, it is a good demonstration of how the lens (or in this case, lens cover) really has a very minimal effect - if any - on image quality.

Are you using the netarchy kernel? I have had similar issues with photos using flash with fresh and the netarchy kernel. Switching back to stock fixed it for me.

If you were a good troll, you would be doing this on the iPhone site about an EVO. You might just make a few iP4 users' heads explode.

i cant beleive, or i missed, no one pointing this out.
you are friggin shaking in the picture dude.
no picture will look good when there is movement.
but i side with you, my camera compared to my wifes camera is garbage.
my wifes takes consistantly better video and stills than mine does.
mine will show the camera focusing and all it does is focus near then far, then stops, it never stops on the right focus point, you can see where it focuses right on past it.
if there was a hack to allow a slider for focus that would be kick ass.
after some time and practice it would be easy to use the slider for focus.
but my shots such ass, big time.
if i Zoom in it will focus much better than if it isnt.
so i am not sure where the focus point is compared to where you place your finger but it isnt where you place your finger thats for sure.
It sounds like a problem my phone seemed to have in the beginning; it would focus and then stop auto focus a little blurry. I don't know what fixed it, but after I had the phone a few weeks, the issue seemed to go away. Now I can take pretty clear and amazingly focused photos.
As for the iPhone troll, I ignored him as I was on a website viewing some flash content on my phone just after I got done with a video conference on 3G . I then made a phone call and held the phone with both hands without dropping the call.

Just wondering why you would post on the Evo forum only to say that the iPhone is better, especially when it's really subjective to say that. You must admit, that is rather troll-ish.

You do know that the camera tech is almost identical? Only thing that is changing the "quality" of the pictures/video is software + compression.

Atrix 5MP Camera vs............

Here are some comparison shots from my Atrix compared to pics from my iPhone 4. Most of them are very different......
Some of these are in low light, but all are on default - automatic settings, and iPhone 4 has HDR turned off. Flash is on Auto on both also and it came on the exact same shots so there should be no difference there.
Feel free to post more comparisons. The Atrix shots are 1st and iPhone 4 2nd btw.

wow thats pretty bad...
u sure u did everything right lol
The iphone has a backlit sensor and I don't think the Atrix does... it simply has a better camera sensor so this is no surprised to me =\
the iphone does have a tendency to oversaturate its pictures though...
that's pretty bad :'(

Maybe its better outside and that's how they tested. I'll try it out today.
I'm no camera expert, but the Atrix camera is great (but not as good as the iPhone 4). It could be much greater if it fixed the lighting control issues. Too much light. Too much JPEG compression, too.
I've definitely gotten better results than the ones above, but the camera isn't as good as the iP4's. I don't generally factor the camera into my phone buying decision too much, but it's nice to be able to get a good shot. I've had an x10, iP4, Captivate and Inspire most recently. The x10 and iP4 had the best cams. I wouldn't go back to any of them because of it though.
btw, I like that table

Atrix
Honestly, the atrix is probably closer to what your eyes see. Which isnt always as pretty as a camera picks up.
iPhone 4 tends to saturate the **** out of pictures especially inside. Those actually dont look all that bad.
Well one thing is for sure, There is a purplish hue in its pictures.
Even on the first page the Atrix photo's look more "real".
Iphone even the 3gs does SOOOO much processing to an image it's not really a reflection of the hardware... Iphone pictures look better because of MUCH better processing software.
My 3gs iphone can take nicer looking shots in CERTAIN cases then even a older canon 5 or 6mp dedicated camera.
I think the Atrix pictures are great... there is a bit of blue/purple hue but I think a better camera app would probably fix that.

Best photo you've taken on the GS2

As the topic suggests, what is the best photo you've managed to capture on your Galaxy S 2?!
Examples would be great.
I'm not proficient with photography by any means, but these came out pretty good for a phone camera. I'm starting to find the following:
1) Low light pictures don't look good at all, seems this camera really needs a good amount of light to put out decent looking pictures. But, many standalone point and shoot digital cams have issues with low light as well, so this isn't all that shocking.
2) Pictures taken with flash look really off colorwise sometimes. Many times, the pictures come out with a blueish purple hue.
3 pictures: Macro, close range, and medium to far away.

I think the problem is people have crazy expectations. Its a good camera but its never going to touch a dedicated camera with large sensors. I'm now switched to Google Camera because Moto one doesn't really seem to be much better.
These are using Moto camera still.
Low light shots I took while messing around with our prototype mini 3D printer this morning. Just quick snaps, no effort at all... Pretty impressive, although reds seem to be a little off -- oversaturated.

I'd have to say with the physical limits of sensor and aperture size the output is pretty decent and not overly over processed. A raw output would still be nice though.
