You can use generic NFC stickers as skip dots - Moto X General

I just wanted to let everyone know that you can buy generic NFC tags and the Moto X will program them to be skip dots. I bought these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261284351324?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
For about $1 each it's pretty fun to play with them. The only downside is that once I programmed one as a skip dot, I was unable to put any other data (URLS, etc) on it like I was with the unprogrammed stickers.
But if you got a Moto X developer edition like me and didn't get any free skip dots, this is a pretty cheap substitute.

How do you program them, and is only the developer edition able to do so?

[Q] Is it worth it to sell your 16gb Moto X for a 32gb Dev Edition?

I have been regretting having only 16gb of storage on my moto X since all my other android items have 32gb and I somehow manage to burn through the 16gb all the time. I have also not had any luck getting root back since upgrading to 4.4 and am pretty bummed that no one has figured out how to unlock the bootloader. Has anyone ditched their basic 16gb moto x for a 32gb Dev edition? I am thinking it might be worth the extra hundred dollars or so since moto is having a sale on them. Vote and help decide the fate of my phone!:good:
I just did exactly what you are pondering and I'm happy with my decision. Took advantage of the recent $100 off deal to get my DE for $350, and I'll be selling my 16GB once I switch it over.
32gb not enough for me. Need 64gb or better yet 128gb. I'd settle for 32gb internal with micro SD card slot.

Another line on our Verizon account was eligible for an upgrade, I have unlimited still. Upgraded the other line at a big box store to a 16GB for $1, swapped devices, purchased dev edition, activated, sold 16GB, sold the old Droid X and the net was $107 for a DE, other family member got an upgrade from Droid X to Gnex, and a 2 year renewed contract for them and I got to keep unlimited.
I'd sell it for the DE any day; double the memory, unlockable with warranty, easy everything. Super happy with my Verizon DE. Then again, I only had a standard black/woven black 16GB for less than 24 hours.
For 50 bucks more I'd get a DE without question. But I'm in Canada, so I got the regular X...but I'm extremely happy. And I'd never need 32gb....but that's me.
I'd still have gotten the DE tho....if I could have.

I think the dev edition is worth it. Especially if you need 32gb. The unlocked bootloader is also great since you never have to worry about root getting locked down.
People keep talking like rooting and stuff is easier and/or better on the DE. LOL. Its no different in that way whatsoever than any other x that you can unlock the boot loader.
Exactly the same everything. Only difference is warranty stays in tact....otherwise no different than any other unlockable X.

And why anyone would buy them is beyond me. Buy a used or new one from another carrier...and use it on those networks if you really want to be with them.
Never would I buy a phone I can't unlock. No way.

But us.....the 0.5 percent ....why would any of us buy an unlockable phone. May as well get an iPhone then. LOL
K....I take back the iPhone joke. The Moto x is better than iPhone out of the box.

Rooting is easier on DE and/or gsm version with unlockable bootloader. I was so frustrated at the root methods not working and the extra hoop jumping and troubleshooting I said screw the warranty. I need my root. Android is worthless to me without it.

Probably stop buying from those useless morons who also put their ugly crappy logo on the phones. Unlocked GSM version baby.
32+ gigs and unlockable bootloader. Developer edition or not, those are things I would never compromise on any phone. Even if the phone came rooted out of the box, having an unlocked bootloader gives you the freedom to modify things you otherwise could not or should not. It's almost like asking freedom vs imprisonment., actually it's exactly like that.

Yes, useless morons with the best coverage, and logo's I couldn't care less about.
After moving from Verizon to T-Mobile I can honestly say their coverage is overrated, but I think his point was to buy Dev editions from Motorola and you wouldn't have these issues. I would have gotten a Verizon Dev edition until Verizon explained that even If I buy a phone cash I still have to pay their overpriced monthly charges including subsidies for phones I bought years ago. Screw that. T-Mobile all day every day the savings is worth it.

F*ck XDA can be full of dicks sometimes.

What if he gets NO service anywhere around him other than with Verizon, "nah bro, just get the T-Mo one anyway" sh*t ton of good a phone with no service is.
Again...if I had to use Verizon say.....I'd get DE edition...or buy another compatible carriers phone and sim unlock it. I'd never own a phone I couldn't unlock. But that's just me.

Verizon moto x into a Verizon Developer edition

Is there a way to turn my Verizon Moto X into the Developer Edition? I don't want custom Roms. I just want to get updates faster, like the same time the developer edition gets an update. Thanks

You will get the update at the same time the Verizon Developer Edition gets it. 4.4.2 hasn't been pushed to Verizon customers yet. Since Verizon is CDMA, we have to wait for the Verizon 4.4.2 to be released.
If you bought your Moto X from Verizon or Moto Maker, there is no way to unlock the bootloader. If you want a Verizon Dev Ed and have an upgrade available, check out my thread about a Free Verizon Dev Ed using an upgrade. Takes some work, but can be done.
How to Get a FREE Verizon Dev Ed if You Have an Upgrade Available
You could sell your current Moto X, too on swappa after you get your Verizon Dev Ed.
Thanks for the info Cozume, I'll just have to be patient.

All the Verizon X's use the same rom... Developer, Moto Maker, Retail, they use the same rom.
Only real difference is that the Dev Ed comes only with black face, woven white back, and silver button/accents, and last but certainly most important is its bootloader can be unlocked for easy rooting and developing.
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon can't have their bootloaders unlocked. I've read posts saying its due to eFuse, which can't be undone, but don't quote me on that.
Sell it and buy one. Only way it'll happen.

Moto X Force to Canada?

Hello, I was wondering if any Canadians here have gotten a Moto X Force dual sim edition, and if so, what way did you get it? I can't seem to find any dual sim models that will ship to Canada.
thanks!
Does a dual sim variety even exist? I can't specifically find one. Unless the SIM/MicroSD tray can also operate as dual sim on the standard model? I purchased my Moto X Force from handtec.co.uk. Wasn't cheap with the exchange rate and duty, but I didn't care, I wanted this phone. Specs are incredible after a few months of usage, no complaints.
ONE IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE THOUGH! This screen scratches EASILY, largely due to the fact that its not glass, it's a softer plastic material despite feeling very glass like to the touch. Make sure to get a screen protector put on the moment you take it out of the box. The replacement shattershields also aren't available in Canada and I tried like crazy to have Motorola US ship me them, but they would not. You can't order them from their site unless you are shipping to a US address and paying with a US addressed credit card. I finally had to find someone in the US to buy me a couple and reship them up to me. Again, cost a small fortune, but better to have them now for the future than to need them a year or two from now and find that they are no longer available.

From my googling, apparently only the units sold in Brazil/China/Mexico are dual-sim enabled/supported. The unit you got from Handtec/UK, the EU Moto X Force units are single-sim only. They come with a tray that allows for 2 sims + microSD. What's the point of NAFTA if you can't order a phone directly from Mexico? LOL.
Does anyone know how the dual sim works on the Force? If it's Active/Standby or Active/Active? 4G/3G? Maybe I should go for the single sim model if it's going to be this insane of an effort to purchase one.

Yes, several Canadiana and U.S.A. XDA members have gotten dual sim Moto X Force from Mexico, via @Jaocagomez.
@Jaocagomez was offering that service. He lives in Mexico and was re-shipping to other countries, for a very reasonable fee. Contact him and see if he's still doing that?
FYI: I used him to get the predecessor Motorola phone (Quark - Moto Maxx XT1225) from Mexico, December 2014. Worked out very well!
He also offered the service for the Moto X Force (Kinzie). See this thread and his responses:

[X Force] How to Manually Flash Official Firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/dro...force-how-to-manually-flash-official-t3282077
Hi all, I'm new here. Go by the name of vapez. Glad to be here. This is great. I have been waiting for a similar phone, as I think my original droid razr is finally on its death bed. I missed the original turbo and mini, but this seems like a nice one to look for. I think we only have the moto x play available, which I almost bit the bullet and bought, but upon finding out about this and its rugged status, I think its a better fit for me, especially since the droid razr was such a tank for me.

Amazon ad version, performance issues?

Hi guys. So my mother in law needs a new phone. I was considering getting her the Amazon ad version but I'm curious how it performs and if the Amazon bloat effects anything. Any input appreciated
Well I guess no one has one lol. I got it for my mother in law and it seems to perform just fine. Finger print however does take two scans instead of one scan. The first scan brings up the ad screen so there's no way to bypass the ad screen
I was searching for a YouTube of exactly how the amazon bloat ware looks, and I never really saw a good one- but YouTube is where I would search for your question.
I bought the 32gb version and I've had some force closes and hangs on apps- but from what I've read that may not happen if one buys the 64gb one with more ram.
The amazon suggestions are very minor, if your do a double tap of the sensor, all notifications go away. I never paid any attention to what they were. I can't even recall any.

Has anybody unlocked the bootloader and flashed the stock (non-amazon) rom to the phone?
I know this has been possible with ad-supported amazon phones in the past.
sorrry..moto g5 plus amazon version has locked bootloader, can not be unlocked...i returned mine in favor of non amazon version..work beautifully

Bought the Moto G Plus with Ads (Prime Day), will I need Prime membership to use it?

Okay, so I assume that the Moto G Plus with Ads and Offers will lock you from using the phone until you sign in with a Amazon account. What I don't know is if an Amazon Prime membership is also a requirement.
I don't have an Amazon prime account, but I asked my brother who has Prime to order this for my parents (not for me). My parent's also don't have an Amazon Prime membership. I will register for a new Amazon account exclusively for my parents without prime and without any credit card information. Will this phone be useable even if my parent's Amazon account has neither a payment method nor a Prime membership?
It does not lock you out of the phone. It still shows ads, but they are not personalized.

Holy crap, that's even better. So to clarify, I don't need to make an Amazon account for my parents?

Correct. The phone works fine without logging into Amazon. It still shows ads on the lockscreen but they are unpersonalized. I'm using the phone right now and haven't signed into Amazon yet.

It's also super easy to remove the ads/amazon apps via adb. I just did the this with my wifes phone.
I cant post links, but check out the reddit MotGg subreddit, its a stickied post. Check about half way down the post and there is better directions to remove all the amazon apps.
www reddit com/r/MotoG/comments/6e1cc4/moto_g_amazon_edition_remove_app_that_displays/dilfht3/
If they are not going to be using the extra Amazon apps (since no login), I recommend disabling them in the system settings.

No to both and do not expect to have root or bootloader unlocked with the amz variant.
Though this may be an opening for root CVE-2016-10277.
