Handset Insurance - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seeing as how I, (like many others on here) plan on purchasing/have purchased the VZW GN3 for full retail, how many are considering purchasing insurance for the handset? If so, SquareTrade, VZW $8/month, covered under a home insurance clause, etc. What will you be using and how much are you paying? I'd like the peace of mind knowing that incidental damage/theft/water damage will be fully covered and though I'll have a screen protector, I'll likely use it naked as I like its body lines and don't want to add ANY bulk to an already hefty sized phone.
Any input is highly suggested and welcomed! Thanks guys!

I am probably going with the Asurion option through Verizon. $5.18 a month and covers loss/theft/damage with a $99 deductible.

Square Trade all the way! They were awesome when I dropped my Note 2--had a new one in my hand in 24 hours (with no fees).

But you have to pay the whole insurance fee up front instead of monthly.

I use SqaureTrade on my Nexus 7 but I have Asurion for my phones because SquareTrade doesn't cover loss or theft
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4

So it seems that:
#1: SquareTrade - Yearly fee and no deductible?
#2: Asurion - I was told by a rep this morning when I picked up my SGN3 was $10/month (they raised it from $8/month) and a $100 deductible.

VZW has 3 Asurion options - $5.18, $8 & $10
My wife has the $5.18 for her Droid DNA
I have the $8 for my SGN3 - still not completely sure of the difference.

I'm going to purchase my plan through Worth Ave, still doing some research but it seems like the best deal/coverage so far. If you can make the College Plus plan work somehow then it gets even better. I'm cautious to post more because I posted looking for some feedback about 3 weeks ago and a few people were cautious of my excitement of what I thought was a good find....

Is the SquareTrade purchased through their website?

looks like that covers the "erp" part of tep. as long as the "esrp" stays in the 4 to 5 dollar range, ill just stick with that.
Well that just made my decision for me for keeping Black Tie insurance on my next phone. $200 deductible matches AT&T's program now!.

I think this cost is outrageous. They should go back to fixing almost any problem with a phone for $50 I was fine with a $100 deductible but to match the deductible with the upgrade price is insane.
Knowing this beforehand might have changed my mind about pre-ordering the GS3 and just getting it at Best Buy.
makes me feel better knowing i just dropped TEP from my plan. screw you sprint, you're turning into the same BS as every other carrier..

I know and I just might do that and pre-order it at Best Buy. $169.98 for 2 year protection plan comes out t0 $8.50 per month over 20 months (Upgrade cycle) with $0 deductible but it doesn't cover lost phones.
You can always just quit tep. And find a 3rd party protection. Or cancel the pre order and get it at Best buy.

Good suggestion. Zagg's program looks pretty good $99 for two years and $59 deductible for liquid or physical damage. Just no lost or stolen coverage.
http://www.zagg.com/store/services/zaggsafe/safe.php
Can keep my pre-order, save the $36 upgrade fee I would pay for doing it at best buy.
Man it sucks because the only reason I really want insurance is if it gets stolen. I learned my lesson twice with the 4 epics I've owned. 2 stolen off chargers, 1 lost, 1 I took swimming (won't be doing that again).
i think ill be fine with just the service and repair side of tep and dropping the eqiptment replacement program. does anybody know what the stand alone pricing on the equipment service and repair program will be?

the only reason I have the tep is for protection of stole, most of the time I take good care of my phone, but I had 1 opportunity that my phone was lost and I really thank for having the insurance but paying 200 dollars its just way too much. I wonder how many people will stop getting the tep with the contract and how much it'll affect them

T-Mobile Insurance on Play Store Nexus 4

So, I purchased my Nexus 4 through the Google Play store and will be using in with Tmobile (US). After searching around and not really getting a solid answer, I called T-Mobile to ask if the Play Store purchased Nexus 4 qualifies to be protected through T-Mobile's Equipment Protection program (insurance). Well, I still didn't get a solid answer. The rep was not sure off hand and had to do some searching. The best she could do was figure that more than likely it will be, but nothing said for sure yet.
She mentioned that it probably would be since it is a supported device, and that "they made an exception for the Nexus 1, so that may be an indication that the Nexus 4 will be supported." (obviously Nexus 1 was only sold through Play Store directly, not through any carriers, yet because it was supported on the Tmobile network they insured it).
I was told to keep the current insurance program that I have on my HTC One S because it should automatically transfer over to the new phone once activated, however it still was not for sure, and I should just call back a couple times until they have a final answer.
What are your experiences? Has anybody else called Tmobile and been told the same, or different?
Also, anybody have experience with SquareTrade phone insurance? Does it work well or is it a big hassle? Just looking for some input so we know our options if Tmobile doesn't protect it...http://www.squaretrade.com/smartphone
You mean the insurance thru asuron?? From what I researched they still make you pay a 130 deductible even tho the phone only cost 300-350
In planning on removing the plan. Not really worth it if I have to pay 130

Good point...I'm just worried about the glass backing that seems to be drawing a lot of controversy due to breakage.
The monthly fee for my insurance is covered through work, so I only have to pay the deductible, which means I don't have to worry about 2 years (or whatever) of the monthly fees adding up on top of the deductible.
I use Square Trade and very highly recommend them. I had a claim with them on my Nexus S and it was great. No deductible, super fast service, great communication. I get Square Trade warranties on all the electronics I buy now. Well worth it for sure.
The insurance you get through T-Mobile and all the other wireless carriers suck BIG TIME. They've sent me back refurbished phones multiple times, and have even lost another one in the mail somewhere. And on top of that, they've cancelled my insurance through them because THEY lost my phone. After two bad experiences with them, I started looking elsewhere -and that's how I found Square Trade.
Only thing about Square Trade is that they don't cover theft or lost and stolen phones. But I'd still recommend them to anyone for sure!

If you claim you lost the phone, T-Mobile will lock it and it will become a door stop.
Dude I'm in the same exact situation from a one s too I'm pretty sure our handset protection will cover it cause even in their website it shows me having a nexus 4 and the premium protection next to it and I went to a tmobile store and they popped in a atnt Sim card and it authorized it so tmobiles devices are unlocked and the same as the play store ones so it should be all cool

This is true. Assurion tried to charge me $150 to replace my Nexus One when I broke the screen. This was on top of the $6/month I had been paying them for insurance for the previous 8 months. So the total cost of replacement through Assurion came to $198. At that point I decided to call Google and they told me they would replace the phone for $140+shipping.
Naturally, I decided to go straight through Google for the replacement. The next day I called T-Mobile retention and raised hell about the situation, telling them that Assurion was a huge rip-off and that I wanted to cancel the insurance and have the previous 6 months of insurance payments to be credited back to my account. The representative was very helpful. She removed the insurance and credited the past 6 months of insurance payments to my account.
That experience taught me to avoid insurance for my Nexus devices. If you look around there are a couple of threads of people who have already broken their Nexus 4's and Google charged them $160 for a replacement. So I've decided just to put an extra $160 away (profit from selling the SIII) and if the phone breaks then I'm going straight to Google.
I'm replacing my n4 thru Asurion and i bought this one on clist brand new.
And the seller brought it from the play store.
My phone fell and my back screen has a bad crack... They're charging me 130$ but its on back order
Oh yea and I'm on T-Mobile

Insurance for the Nexus 4?

Just thinking, I'm not too worried about defects, Google will replace it for that. But reading about the nexus 4s slickness, and people dropping them makes me realize stuff happens. This is why I have insurance on my at&t account, but obviously that isn't going to mean much with a non at&t phone. Any third party companies that offer it?

Squaretrade is ridiculously overpriced given the cost of the n4 and the deductible they charge. Plus they offer cheaper coverage for iPhones which is irritating. Not recommended. If others have found reasonable insurance, I'd be interested.

My current plan through T-mobile is $6 a month with a $130 decuctible. What are you used to paying?

I think it's crap that I can't just pay $30 from square trade for a service plan with accidental coverage. Oh it's a phone. That means you need insurance and not a service plan. Who decides this crap? I got a service plan from square trade when I bought my HTC Flyer and it was $30, and what is a flyer? An oversized Desire HD!
I remember you used to be able to buy a service plan from best buy for a phone if you bought it from them, and now they have bend over and spread em insurance too! Really who decides this crap? Cell phones are pretty much in a class of their own with consumer electronics.
I guess I'll just go insurance free

bumping this in hopes that it gets some action.
i think i am going to get squaretrade before my 30 days are up. one of the things i like is you can cancel at any time and be refunded the rest of your money. or cancel and stop paying your seven bucks a month. you can also transfer it with the phone if you sell it and want to use the insurance as a perk.
has anyone else found anything better?
i just noted in a previous post that my phone just dropped 18" onto a rug with the bumper on and now my glass creaks. its only a matter of time i feel before something worse happens. and who knows... maybe google and lg will start building these things a bit better and with insurance we can swap it out.
I just think it's crap I can get a square trade warranty on a tablet for $30 that doesn't have a monthly fee and offers the exact same coverage but because the device is deemed small enough to be a phone I gotta pay a monthly fee

i completely agree. i wish some hardware replacements would start hitting the market. if i could price out the replacement parts i could weight out the pricing better. but i dont want to go past my 30 days and be forced into buying the parts from the internet when they could very well be pricier.
Check the threads were people have sent their phones back for repair. I'd rather save my money then send it back to LG for repair, if there is something that needs repair. One post I read said it was going to cost $140 to repair the cracked glass. Another one was $153. So paying someone $125 for 2 years and $99 deductible seems like its not worth it. The cost for a one time repair would have to exceed $224 to make it worth it.
This is what I got. Square trade $79.99 for 2 years and a $50 deductible.

I agree. Paying $125 on the chance that I break it and then have to pay another $99, for a total of $224, on a phone I bought for $300, doesn't seem quite worth it.
Of course, that's if it only breaks once. My wife is murder on phones, so figure that she breaks hers, say, three times in two years and that's $125 + $99 x 3 = $422. But then, if LG will repair it for about $150, then those three times only cost me $450, so the difference is still pretty negligible.
I'm going to get us both the Ballistic cases when they are released in a few weeks and hope for the best.

I got Square Trade. They are having a 35% off sale until December 26th.
Transmission sent from my badass Nexus 4.
I've had mixed experiences with Squaretrade. My biggest complaint is that they send your device to a repair depot that can take over a week to fix. In addition, if the repairs exceed the cost of the phone, they keep it.
Also, the last time I used them, they wanted my SIM card (I was having SIM identification problems). I personally refuse to send an active SIM card through the mail. They said that all of their customers are fine with it?
Anyways, I personally don't think it's cost effective to buy insurance for a cell phone at $299-$349. Just keep money aside if it breaks or is lost/stolen.
I'd like to know if any one has used these guys.
http://www.worthavegroup.com/cell-phone-insurance
on paper it seems like a good deal and good coverage... but I'd like to hear some stories about claims being a hassle or not.
I'm content with using SquareTrade as an "Insurance" for my Nexus 4.
SquareTrade: $125+$99=$224 (They even cover shipping)
Buying New Replacement: $349+Shipping
Plus with buying new, you have to take into consideration that the Nexus 4 is nearly impossible to get right now.
So you could be stuck without a phone for months, where with SquareTrade you get one quickly.
And "Part Replacement" is pointless IMO. You might crack the screen, spend $150 for a new screen. But what if you do more damage than just the screen.. more parts to buy
But that's just me. Plus if the phone is not repairable. They give you the full retail cost of the phone at time of purchase.
$79 Plan from SquareTrade the Indian guy from the SquareTrade Customer Service said the Nexus 4 is covered under this plan.
Or $99 Plan from SquareTrade will cover it too, (in case you don't want to take the chance that the $79 plan does not cover it.)

What's a good insurance to get with my Nexus 4?

I just got my phone about a week ago and i got it from Tmobile with the insurance they offered. But now I'm wondering if that was a good idea. To go with their insurance or Squaretrade or if the Nexus 4 comes with a 1 year warranty for accidents.
I'm careful with my phone, but accidents happen. You can't 100% prevent an accident, no one can't. It happens.
So what's a good insurance plan? I only plan on paying for one year, after that I don't think it will be worth it.
I read Squaretrade is good for iPhones, but idk for Android phones
Square trade is a ripoff on android phones. $99 deductible, while its only $50 for iPhone 5.
Just go and get a nice protective case like ottobox and an armored screen protector.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I am on T-Mobile also and I have their insurance. As for the 1 year "warranty", it doesn't cover accidents, unless the accident happened before the phone got to you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I also am on t-mobile. The 1 yr warranty only covers hardware problems. example my first N4 had really bad light bleeding, they sent me a replacement for it, Which was on launch. Now 1 week ago I noticed my battery would not last more that 4 to 5 hours completely stock with data off most of the time and called it in and received my replacement on monday.
Insurance on the other hand covers theft, lost, broken glass etc.....
saw a thread on reddit /r/nexus4 about geek squad protection plan. xda wouldnt let me post the link since i have <10 post.
Basically its 9.99/months or 169 for 2 years. No deductible, or claim limit. Covers liquid damage, physical damage and others. pm me for the link if you want more info, or head into a best buy to find out more.
Im heading to best buy tomorrow. So you might wanna look into it as well if you don't like square trade like me.

I've been looking for a coupon code and went through about 30 pages of google searches but all the codes were expired or used. I signed up for their newsletter & got a 20% off code but I seen codes that were 30-40%...With the 20% a 2 year plan will cost $95 (plan+ NYS tax) but i was hoping to bring it down a bit more if possible...
Well I decided to just call Squaretrade and ask for a discount and they gave me 30% off. So I did a 2 year $75 deductible plan for $79 and NO NYS sales tax!!! I hope I never need it but it's good to know I can get a new tablet if something were to happen!! If I didn't plan on using my tablet at work I'd probably wouldn't worry about a plan...but anything can happen out of the house!
***EDIT*** Well it looks like they did charge me NYS sales tax but still it was only $86....

I have purchased square plans for 4 devices now and have never had to use it. Two of the devices were sold on eBay at about 13 months old and I believe the plan helped mine sell very quickly as other units for sale on eBay that were less money had not. The warranties are transferable so that is also a plus. Sometimes you can get a better price on purchasing your plan from Amazon, Newegg or Tigerdirect even with a discount code direct from Squaretrade
