Note 3 or G2? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been researching phones to get with my upgrade and I've narrowed it down to these two devices. They are very similar in many ways but also vastly different. I like the s pen and some Samsung software, but some others can be annoying and I question if the huge screen is worth it. I like the G2 because it has root already and it seems to be getting better battery life. Convince me why I should get one or the other.

Can't we combine Captivate and Vibrent?

I really think the forums should be the same for both phone, they are the same and it sucks switching back and forth on teh XDA app.
I think we should combine ALL the galaxy S variation forums. Its really annoying to jump between each one
I agree. When Samsung first announced these phones xda had a big discussion over in the original Galaxy S threads about how to handle this. I was very disappointed when they decided to create separate forums for all of them.

I agree that they should be combined at a top level, and then split by device.
The strange thing is that there was a poll about how we wanted it handled, and we overwhelmingly all agreed to have them combined, but they chose to separate them.
Democracy will always prevail!
+1 for combining Captivate and Vibrant. They are both GSM devices and have the same hardware and software.
+1 here as well.
+1 also .
And here I thought the poll would've been enough to combine 'em
Unfortunately only way to make them change it right this second is to stop using xda in masses till they do it. But that just wont happen. People just dont have it in them to actually follow through with something.

Galaxy note dying

Galaxy note is the first breed of phablets and was unitially criticised. But despite criticism it achieved a massive success and lead to many successor devices. Unfortunately this phone is dying early despite a potential of its way more service life. Most developers are getting the new devices and development on the note is halting.

When development stops we can at least be sure we DID get the best out of our notes thanx to all devs.
Having this phone is gonna make me getting the latest note available when I get to renew my contract.
Every mobile's development 'dies' one day m8,some sooner then others, that's for sure.
Respect!
Your right, instead of just loving the old gen we should keep moving with the new ones.

Yep, and when we give Note to our missus or kid and get Note x it will have The best ROM/Kernel/Recovery imaginable thanks to all the work done by Devs up to that point (as pointed out by KrisKras). We might be left with Noobs buying Note1 because of price drop, but who knows? Some of them might have potential to carry on the good work of the great Devs who have moved on to other devices:fingers-crossed:

[Q] Nexus 4... worth it?

Hi,
I'm a big Samsung fan, i've had the S1, S2 and currently own the S3..at the moment i'm running cyanogenmod 10.1 and after a few initial misgivings about it's lack of features compared to a sammy touchwiz rom ... i'm really starting to like the aosp feel and look..
Now after a year of owning the S3 i'm getting a bit restless and feel like a change.. the nexus 4 is the phone that's intriguing me most. So I have a really simple question, is it a sensible move to the 4 from the S3.
Carl.
Yes only if non removable battery or SD card is not a problem which I personally don't mind and the camera won't to better but around the same and no lte then I'd say go for it , it does give you a bang for your buck especially with development I use P.A which is awesome
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The main pros of the Nexus 4 that I keep listing anytime I tell people about it are the following:
1. Price. $350 is pretty much half the price of any other competitor to the Nexus 4
2. Pure Android, updated directly from Google. As soon as a new version of Android is released, it's on the Nexus. Google develops Android FOR this device.
3. Design. Glass front and back, it's a solid phone. Looks sleek.
Now, newly-released phones do have slightly better hardware. But we're getting to the point of diminishing returns. We're packing so much hardware into these devices, you'll hard-pressed to find software that actually makes use of it. I think the only debate you should be having is buy the Nexus 4 now, or wait until the next Nexus comes out, possible during the holidays. That isn't to say this phone won't still be a solid phone then, but I can understand if some people wait to buy updated versions.
To answer your question: yes. It is definitely worth it. At $350, it's fiscally irresponsible NOT to buy a Nexus 4. Right now I'm paying $30/mo for a tablet plan on AT&T with 3gb of data. Having weird and crazy options like that don't seem to happen with other phones. I feel like the Nexus 4 is YOUR phone, not 80% your phone, 20% the manufacturer's.
Spoiler alert: I might be a little biased, but c'mon. It's a sweet phone.
No, don't buy a N4. You obviously can't be bothered to research and figure out if this phone is worth it or not. You definitely aren't going to do any other research when you attempt to Root, Rom, and Mod......Buy a different phone and clutter their forums.:silly:
Definitely get the phone. It's worth every penny. Root it and put Franco kernel and you're good for the entire day.

Before I read everyone else's post I want to say I came from the gs3 had gs2. I would do it again in a heart beat. However it's not a super huge upgrade like it was from gs1 to gs2 or even gs2 to gs3. The software is where I enjoyed the phone the most.
I loved my screen on my gs2 and gs3 on this I wasn't impressed until I got used to it. Now I feel samsung screens have to much pop in the colors
Hope this made sense

is the phone worth it, hell yeah for 350$ you can't get better. Is it worth it for you? You'll have to answer that question yourself.

Well the guy is trying to get perspective from people who actually own the device and use it day to day which is much different than reading any review from someone who might be biased in one way or another.
Maybe the op could have used a different subject or maybe asked what everyone thinks of the phone from actual owners.
Just something to consider before jumping to conclusions

Not in love with the Nexus 4. Have had it since January when it replaced my SGS2 (T989). I really appreciated not having to search for the least buggy ROM, as the stock was nice but at this point I'm dissatisfied with the Camera, which seems to produce mostly mediocre pictures (sadly, and since my other devices and cameras produce better ones, I'm afraid it's not (usually) operator error); the screen, whose color palate I don't love and whose auto-brightness is chronically dim (which can of course be mostly remedied by not using auto-brightness, though wish I could), and lastly the touch sensitivity, which I may try to adress now—I understand there are fixes. Nevertheless, I'm gonna see what T-Mobile will sell me a SGS4 for...

Cheers for the help.. i've read dozens of reviews, spec lists and browsed many forums to get a decent idea of the phone, I thought i'd ask people who may have previously had the Galaxy line of phones and XDA seemed a logical place to do so..
I've been a registered member of this site for probably 2 years and never created a thread before, simply because of the very hostile and condescending attitude of some of the members and BINGO, you did yourself proud mate..

Who's getting the LG G2?

So it has arrived, with it's super thin bezel, 5.2inch True HD IPS LCD, Snapdragon 800 CPU, 3000mAh battery and new LG UI:

With all the GS4 complaints I see around here, some seem fed up with it, so, who of you will be getting this new beast?
Me, I'm very happy with my GS4, yeah it's got its flaws but the pros far outweigh them, and I'm still loving my Octa beast!

And you think the LG G2 won't have any? I haven't seen an "issue free" phone launched in the past eighteen months by any manufacturer and that includes the Nexi. Some flaws/issues push individual's buttons more than others so going to another phone may be right for them. But they're just trading one set of issues/flaws/compromises for another.

It's simply a thread to see who's leaving and what people feel about the closest competition to the GS4. It's like some of you are reading way too much into it.

Apparently that is Market Dependant, major letdown if the major markets don't get it. Don't know why they don't just release them all with SD slot.

Because some carriers want to force people to use the cloud so that they can sell them more data allowance.

Looks like a pretty cool phone! That button is an interesting idea. Don't know why we have to make it a pissing contest with the sgs4. They are just phones, not gods. Wish phone mfgs would stop leaving out the expandable memory. Wish Google would treat sd like a real memory expansion. All this cloud stuff is for the birds!
Nice to see LG competing. Nice phone!

Nice internals ... to me the back button as i saw it seems atrocious ... the idea is really cool ... the implementation as it seems in the photo is bad for my taste ... i'll stick with gs4 anyway .. i find it pointless to replace phones that early anyway ...
LG G2 is an amazing phone but, I'm gonna wait for the note 3. To be honest I'm disappointed with the amoled screen on s4. My s2 screen was so much more brighter and vibrant.

im happy with the s4 and LG is known to have crap support and non-existant updates, but the G2 looks like a great phone phone hardware wise and the flip cover idea is what samsung should have done with the s-view cover
if im going to trade my samsung it will definetly be for a Sony

If every time a new high(ish)-end phone was released a thread seeking people's "feelings" toward it was started those threads would cannibalize the front page. In the past few weeks we've seen the XZ Ultra, One Mini, One Max, Moto X, Note 3, S-800 SGS4's, Sony Honami, and a S-800 One+ rumor in addition to the LG G2. I'd guess some percentage of people that own a SGS4 would be interested in some of those phones for various individual reasons. Finding those reasons out becomes more a market research study than a discussion about the specific device whose forum the question is posted on. That's why most mods aren't really keen on comparison threads; no matter what their title says.

+1!!!!
This whole 'in the cloud' thing just doesn't work for me, not at all! That's why I like Samsung, they give us both plenty local and cloud storage, so we can choose. I hate what Google has done with the SD card treatment in Android, one of the main reasons why many of us chose Android was iOS limited us in storage, now Google are doing the same, just look at the Nexus 4, 16GB the highest you get, pretty pathetic really.
Keeping my s4. Lg twice. lg never again.
Crappy support, updates what is that. And whit one lg i had hardware issus so 3 times send it in to repair, the same lg did to 3 of my frinds.

N3 Regrets... stick with it?

Soooo, I recently purchased a Note 3 and I'm MOSTLY happy with a lot of things about the phone... BUT the idea that we may never get an unlocked bootloader (SOOO annoying, had a Thunderbolt for the last two years and was really looking forward to getting CM again!) is making me question whether I should stay with my new phone or not. Looking for a little advice on keeping the N3 or getting something new:
Pros:
1.) The hardware is incredible. Coming from the Thunderbolt, this thing is insanely fast.
2.) The screen is awesome. The size doesn't bother me at all.
3.) Battery life!
Cons:
1.) Touch Wiz. I used to own an original Droid and LOVED the OS, eventually switching to CM for added features. Most of the stuff I dislike I can turn off, but there's a lot of bloat and dumb ideas here. (Why Samsung makes me turn up the volume and say I won't explode my head every time I plug in headphones is insane... I'M PLUGGING IT INTO MY CAR AND I'M NO LONGER 12 YEARS OLD.)
2.) The screen isn't big enough to use as an e-reader. This is not a huge issue, I had just HOPED it would be... BUT, since that's the case, I could easily switch to another phone and get a tablet too and not feel bad about it.
3.) Gaming... again, I had hoped the N3 would be able to provide gaming and e-reader and phone all into one device, but Android games are really just too shallow for me.
Soooo, what it really comes down to is if you guys think this device will be unlocked down the line OR if you think I could adjust it to make a more stock android/ AOSP/ CM type experience. If I was able to put CM on here I would be sitting pretty. I'm just worried it will turn into a situation like the Thunderbolt with limited updates and no real way to get new software...
If I did get a new phone, what would you guys recommend? I'm looking at the HTC One, Nexus 5, LG G2 and Galaxy S4. I haven't yet looked into which ones have fully unlocked bootloaders with decent roms, but that would be a deal breaker.
Thanks for any and all help, you guys are awesome!!
