[Q] S4 only boots into stock recovery - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S4 only boots into stock recovery with blue text 'recovery booting'. I cannot get into download mode or boot normally. I've tried to data factory reset but the same thing occurs and also I cannot clear the cache as it ends in an error. I have managed by fluke a couple of times to boot the phone up in normal. but cannot install superuser to get root. I also restored with kies but again reboots into recovery mode. please help as I don't want to keep booting into recovery. any questions ill try and answer them.

That's weird. Can you install the Android SDK or ADT and get adb.
Then plug your S4 to the computer (I assume the drivers are installed?) and open up cmd. Set adb to your path variables or just browse over to the adb where you installed your SDK and run
Code:
adb devices
to see list of devices and check if yours is there. Then type
Code:
adb reboot download
Let me know if that works.

Did you connect the phone to the PC? Seems that it cannot detect your phone. Bad drivers maybe? Try installing these:

Well if CWM works, and you flashed a stock ROM using Odin, does the issue persist? If so, it could be a hardware issue then.
EDIT: Although the issue in the OP seems to be solved partially no? Can you boot normally to your ROM? Can you boot to recovery (vol-up + power)? Download mode (vol-down + power)? Anyone of them through adb?

Do you get a bootloop? Download a zip of a ROM and flash it through CWM.
Can you still access download mode through the hardware buttons or through adb?

You're supposed to press vol-down and power. Not menu. I guess that's a typo?
Anyway, if it doesn't work in those ways, I'm not sure what's left besides taking it to the shop and getting it replaced.
Does adb devices detect the phone as online? If so, you can try this toolkit and maybe that boots you to download mode?

No its not. You push in down volume, home(menu) and power button for ODIN and up volume, Home(menu) and power for recovery. Have NEVER got into download or recovery by holding volume up\down and power. Not since my Gtab 7" 1st edition....

What. That is totally weird. You are right but I can get into both recovery and download mode without touching the home button.
@spongerob500: Try what ultramag69 suggested with Menu button. Sorry about the wrong info in that regard, but on my phone I don't press the Menu/Home button.
EDIT: Sorry @ultramag69, it seems that both methods work. So no need to hold the Home button!

[Q] Can only boot to custom recovery via ROm Manager

HI
I have the i9505 samsung s4.
I managed to root it via odin, and flashed the Team win recovery as part of the process. I downloaded root checker and it shows that the device is rooted.
However, when i turn the device off and then try and boot to the custom recover I am finding it impossible.
I hold the volume down, home key then press the power button and keep them pressed. THe phone keeps going to the odin download mode and no further etc. However, I can get to the custom recovery via rom manager. What am i doing wrong??
Using rom manager is fine, however if something goes wrong during a custom rom flash then i will need to use the buttons to boot to custom recovery
Please help

If you flash Philz recovery you can boot only when you turn off your phone and by Hold and pressing Power+Volumeup . Im Guessing your asking the Extended Power menu Option by Pressing Power and choose restart > There should be Reboot Option IE Reboot,Recovery,Downloadmode. Mate is your phone rooted? If you want an Extended power menu option try to install WannamXposed , and Enable it from there, Make sure to follow hes Tutorial. Have a nice day.

hi it is the same with both custom and stock rom. I am now running paranoid 4.4.2.
The issue is that I need an option to get to recovery using the buttons. There is no issues getting to recovery from the power menu once the phone is running
It is really annoying me now
Thanks

4.4 update "Recovery booting"

I am having a having a full-blown panic atack here.
I tried to flash the 4.4 rom onto my n9005. The flash succeeded in Odin, however it is stuck on "recovery booting".
I can't even enter the download mode anymore.

Well that's a problem. You might try the jig but I've never had to use one so don't know if or how well it'll work.

Seeing that you said you can enter recovery via ADB, you phone should not require a jig I believe, as it tries to boot and. Start ADB which allowed you to enter there. Also did you say that while on recovery your phone starts pressing random buttons. Like say up and down I assume? Just wondering if you have broken volume keys or malfunctioning keys.
And which model S4 do you have?

928f in boot loop, used smart switch but still boot loop

please help, woke up today with phone in boot loop and very hot, tryed odin to flash new firmware it was working fine, but near the end i get fail, so i used smart switch for phone initialization, with model and serial, it did his thing, but when it finishes and goes to reboot device it goes back to boot loop, what can i do?
So i take it from the lack of replies it's dead, so is there a way i can pull photos and videos from the internal memory? it still powers up, just stuck in boot loop, i can still get to download mode, just cant get into recovery, is there a way to get to the files?
If the phone is in bootloop she's not dead.
Try wiping it trough the fast boot menu and start over.

Ok, i searched and donwloaded platform tools to get ADB and fastboot, but from what i read i need to be in recovery for adb to pick up my phone, and i cant seem to get into recovery mode, pushing vol up + home + power does nothing, holding power to turn off phone also does not work, as soon as i connect phone to charger it turns on and goes into boot loop, only thing i can do is enter download mode, but in download mode i cant seem to get adb to find phone.
Put it in download mode, push an original OS from Samsung on it and after that you should be good 2 go.

So you already did this;
Phone in recovery mode; wipe it completely and restore to factory settings.
Phone in download mode; original OS via Odin.
After those steps it should work. Had to do the same to my phone last night. Lol.

the only part i didnt do is
Phone in recovery mode; wipe it completely and restore to factory settings.
because i cannot enter recovery, it supposed to be vol up+ home + power, but i think it requires phone to be off, and i cant turn phone off, holding power to turn it off does nothing, already let batery die, but as soon as i plug the cord it turns itself on, and goes back into boot loop, so again when i try the combo to go to recovery it does nothing (because i think it really needs to be off to enter recovery) so all i can do is do vol down + home + power and go to download mode, but i'm not getting adb to recognize phone in download mode, so i could command it to reboot to recovery =(
If you hold all buttons down it will restart the phone. And as soon as the screen goes black release all but volume up and power you should get into recovery mode

So you already did this;
Phone in recovery mode; wipe it completely and restore to factory settings.
Phone in download mode; original OS via Odin.
After those steps it should work. Had to do the same to my phone last night. Lol.

I'm having similar issues with my Galaxy S9+. When you say "Wipe it completely" I should do the standard wiping or advanced wiping and select all folders?
