false advertising from samsung and AT&T - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 General

Received my shiny new toy today to rush into getting everything set up. went into task manager and notices there were only 2.38Gigs or ram usable. Thought this was a bit funny since missing .6gig is a ton of memory. I quickly ran benchmarks thanks to AnTuTu and when going into device details it confirmed that there is only 2.44 gigs of memory on board the device. Now i know there will be comments saying they have preinstalled system apps that take the memory but nothing would take up .6 gigs. Other threads i have found point that samsung is only putting chips in the phones that are 2.6~2.7gigs.
ibtimes.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3-release-date-nears-3gb-ram-handset-may-actually-contain-just-266gb-ram
I filled a complain and left a review warning other buyers of this issue.
I hope im wrong on this because for the price i really would like to get what i paid for. love samsung things but they are a crap company when it comes to their customers and doing the right thing.
Let me know what you think if this is just me over reacting or real issues from samsung.

I think the adreno 330 uses 600mb. That plus memory hungry TWZ there is barely any memory left. Basically Samsung had to give the phone 3gb or it would just plain suck
I wonder how much ram other phones have with only 2gb of ram, like the Z1, Z ultra, and G2?

Check out this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2461099
The phone does have 3GB, we just don't see all of it

Personally I believe your over reacting. There is always going to be some overhead from the operating system allocating ram, it's like this even on actual computers.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk 2

Overreacting. Device has 1GB more RAM than devices like the S4 which were listed/advertised as 2GB.
Not going to get into the details and mistakes in that article you referenced, but the long short is: don't waste your time worrying about it.

Thats what I thought. But I cant wrap my mind around .6gigs.
The s4 has 2 gig on board and in task manager you have 1.8 available. The note2 is almost identical with that with 1.75 usable.
The s4 has 1080P as well without that memory drain. The only thing I could think of software wise would be something with s pen and its new features.
How much could change from note2 to note3 to take that space.
Sent from my note 2 sgh-i317

What I'm not understanding is why are you so hung up about .6gb out of 3gb? What do you think your going to do with the other .6 if you did have it?
You know I don't ever remember Samsung making any type of a statement that the phone had 3gb of usable ram, it was just stated that the phone would come with 3gb of ram and it does doesn't it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk 2

No, no it doesn't. Don't worry about it just enjoy it.

Does it matter? On boot I have about 990mb used... That's over 1 gig of free ram, more than I had on my note 2 free.

Thas write; its only gots 2.38GB of RAMs because .5GB is used by the GPU (Adreno). Its beens that way sinces the SGS3s cames outs.
Non-discrete graphics on PCs also allocate "X" amount of available RAM for themselves. But good luck with that petition, lawsuit, and crusade you're about to embark upon.

No where was said that the performance wasnt good because of this. I just was not happy that it shows less that 2.5 on board. I know this is like all other devices that your not going to get the full 3 gig like they say.just like any ram or hard drive for that matter. Was just shocked that it was such a BIG drop from 3 gig.

Great info though. I didnt know the chipset did that for graphics. Thanks for the info.

I'm no expert. But I'm pretty sure the note 3 has allocated ram for graphics processing. So that is where your .6gb is. Right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Let's say you install 12gb of memory in your computer, boot it up, check the memory manager, and you will see maybe 10 gb available. This is completely normal, because the operating system ie; windows 7 or 8, allocates what it needs to operate. Same holds true for Amdroid devices. The Note 3 does indeed have 3gb of memory. You can freeze/stop applications you don't use or need that load at boot, eating some of that memory. Just go to the application manager and go through the list amd freeze/stop what you don't need, freeing up memory. Currently, my Note 3 actively uses only 850mb on average, leaving me with well over a gb of free memory, which is more than enough. Hope this helps.

Also keep in mind that the Adreno 330 is an onboard graphics chip, which requires system.memory to finction. Someday, we'll have discrete graphics chips, with dedicated memory. This phone is amazing, and the most powerful phone on the market right now.

Fighting LG
I guess this is deeper than just responding to the LG phone, it also means that SIII is probably more highly adaptable to combinations of hardware in design than expected.
Although Samsung said the Super AMOLED Plus has a problem or short-lived blue dots, but I think they are reserving it for something even bigger.
Considering the there are also reports saying that Google wants Jelly Beans to be released in Nexus first, I guess Samsung will do something better very soon. What's more, who supplies Apple with the New iPad screen? Samsung!
Maybe "SIII Advanced" with better Super HD AMOLED Plus? Flexible AMOLED? Even thinner body? SIII isn't as slim as we thought.
C'mon man, let's not start another hype-nuke with the Nexus and the amoleds plus 2x epic and flexible amoleds and 1mm phones.

Will The Nexus 4's storage(my case 8gb) ever affect OS updates.

I am getting kinda worried, that future updates of Android will run slow on my phone cause its only 8GB, doesn't each update become a bigger file and take up more space? I use alot of cloud and streaming services so I dont need much on board storage so I didnt feel compelled to pay 50 bucks for 8gb of storage when I know it too expensive to pay for just that amount of storage. So my question is am I safe with this storage considering future OS updates.

The OS it's self is bigger than a few hundred megs, but updates do your device do not necessarily mean your OS is taking up more space. Just because your os is, say, 500 megs and you downloaded a 100 meg update your new total is almost certainly less that 600, depending on the update much of that code is replacing existing code.
Also, performance is not dependent on the amount of HDD space you have available, this is even more true on flash memory. If you max it out to a 100% you're going to have problems, but other than that it matters very little.

Formatted capacity of an 8gb drive is probably closer to 7.5, less some space for the OS + recovery partition + included Google apps, and likely some additional space reserved for future OS updates (though this is just speculation).
Isn't the space for the OS set aside from the usable storage?

No. On older devices you could change mtd and assign size for system, cache, and data(user storage) but, that is not available for the newer devices. You'll have to deal with what Google/lge gave you or switch to 16gb.

It was for the older mtd devices like n1, g1, my touch, hero, etc. I haven't seen recent attempts for emmc support for newer devices, could be that the partitions aren't modifiable anymore. Fire rat stated the cmtd patch on xda but I don't think he does anymore hacks here.

I thought partitions are made by the software? If that's the case then it's modifiable.

You'll have to do some research on custom mtd on Google, it's been awhile so I've forgotten most of the details. However a custom SPL or bootloader were used to allow custom partitions to be made via a text file.

By the time a Android gets that big (in Gigabytes) you would have a different phone with about 128 if not 256 gb of storage
Our system partition is in the mid to upper 800s mb.
It is the same for both the 8gb and 16gb models.
Actual Usable Storage of Nexus and Other Phones
Hi Guys,
I put together a list of the actual usable internal storage of different phones so that we can compare and see which one has how much. This can be found on:

Let me know if you found it useful!

So it's almost the end of the journey

Alright guys,
I'll be due for upgrade in next month. I wanted to discuss it with you.
Which phone are you going for after this adorable phone. Being honest will easily and comfortably serve another year.
I would be enticed to get the s4 but the lack of full sources from Samsung seems going to repeat itself again.
I dropped this thread hear as people will biased towards their phones in the respected forums.
Many thanks
Tell me what u think guys.

I'd wait for at least the next Nexus it's not really worth "upgrading". Whatever you're gonna "upgrade" to except Nexus or Samsung, you'll wait forever for the next Android version, unlike the S3 users.

This year ill stick to s3.. Prob will put it on aosp..Best android experience is stock nexus one..

I'm going the s4 but waiting for the 32 gig one is out in Australia as I normally buy my phone outright ....
i think allot of the gimmicks we find at we first we start to use like smart stay ect on the s3. I like TW (shock horror) and in general enjoy the innovation that Samsung has developed since the original i9000 anyway good luck with your choice . better the devil you know as they say lol

Sticking with S3 for awhile. I'll upgrade a generation later than S4.
I'd say S3 still got a lot of potential for tweaks.

Read the S4 forums in detail, there are a couple of dealbreakers for me, at the moment.
Screen seems to have issues, smearing and red pixels not turning completely off on black images. Hopefully they are software related (wouldn't surprise anyone) but they could be defects.
It seems the S4 is a greatly rushed product, what a shame...
Thank you guys for your replies, people seems to mention the s4 only. What about the new handsome HTC ONE guys?

Same here, will wait till the 32gb version, if they release one.. But fear we will never see one..
Didn't Sammy promise a 32gb S3..?
I might just wait otherwise until the S5, the S3 is still a great phone and I'm tied for another year on contract.
Once the ports come for 4.2 and eventually 5.0 this will make my phone seem like a new one anyway..
I don't know what are you talking about, i have 32GB S3 model for almost 8 months... o.0

and why would you want to wait rather buying an sd card on the top of the 16g model?

I already have a 64gb mem card thanks.. but all programs get installed to the internal memory and I have some bigs games and i'm getting fed up of making space.. Also you only get to use 11gb, not 16gb
Because I need my mem card to be formatted FAT32 so my laptop can read it I can't save files bigger than 4gb on it, therefore no HD films which i have to download to internal mem, which as that stands I don't have a 4gb spare anyway..
Using directory bind there is absolutely no need for bigger internal space

It looks nice, but the camera isn't great, battery life is hit and miss, I hate the button layout (why put the power button on the top left, yuck) and no room for extra memory.
none of the gpu s out there is enough for 1080p atm so ill stick with s3 better game performance than new phones and really very little difference on browser performance doesnt worth for upgrading atm.
HTC one also has no removable back cover/battery, so there's another negative. I don't like the trend towards 'apple'-fying new phones, having expandable memory & removable battery are very important for me!
I will keep my S3 32GB GT-9300I at least until S5, and who knows maybe untill S6 if i don't have problems with it.
it's perfect for me.

Hell yes!!! If I wanted an Apple iphone I'd buy one, not an I-clone from a company who's credibilty just went down 1000 points because it jumped on the Apple bandwagon....
Leave us our expandible memory and removable battery...
