Will The Nexus 4's storage(my case 8gb) ever affect OS updates. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am getting kinda worried, that future updates of Android will run slow on my phone cause its only 8GB, doesn't each update become a bigger file and take up more space? I use alot of cloud and streaming services so I dont need much on board storage so I didnt feel compelled to pay 50 bucks for 8gb of storage when I know it too expensive to pay for just that amount of storage. So my question is am I safe with this storage considering future OS updates.

The OS is a few hundred megabytes. You've got nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply, so why when i got my device was there only around 5.5 gb available to me?

The OS it's self is bigger than a few hundred megs, but updates do your device do not necessarily mean your OS is taking up more space. Just because your os is, say, 500 megs and you downloaded a 100 meg update your new total is almost certainly less that 600, depending on the update much of that code is replacing existing code.
Also, performance is not dependent on the amount of HDD space you have available, this is even more true on flash memory. If you max it out to a 100% you're going to have problems, but other than that it matters very little.

Formatted capacity of an 8gb drive is probably closer to 7.5, less some space for the OS + recovery partition + included Google apps, and likely some additional space reserved for future OS updates (though this is just speculation).

Isn't the space for the OS set aside from the usable storage?

For this phone (8 GB model), there's only ~5.5 GB available to user for sdcard-like storage.

Is there anyway to recover more available free space? it seems a bit ridiculous that the the OS would take up 2gb....

No. On older devices you could change mtd and assign size for system, cache, and data(user storage) but, that is not available for the newer devices. You'll have to deal with what Google/lge gave you or switch to 16gb.

It was for the older mtd devices like n1, g1, my touch, hero, etc. I haven't seen recent attempts for emmc support for newer devices, could be that the partitions aren't modifiable anymore. Fire rat stated the cmtd patch on xda but I don't think he does anymore hacks here.

You'll have to do some research on custom mtd on Google, it's been awhile so I've forgotten most of the details. However a custom SPL or bootloader were used to allow custom partitions to be made via a text file.

By the time a Android gets that big (in Gigabytes) you would have a different phone with about 128 if not 256 gb of storage

Our system partition is in the mid to upper 800s mb.
It is the same for both the 8gb and 16gb models.

Actual Usable Storage of Nexus and Other Phones
Hi Guys,
I put together a list of the actual usable internal storage of different phones so that we can compare and see which one has how much. This can be found on:

[Q] Vibrant 12.78 total storage versus 13.18 total storage Explain?

OK the Vibrant is supposed to have 16 gb of storage but after the OS and other stuff that is reduced. Why is it some phones are showing 12.78 gb of total storage while others are reading 13.18 gb of total storage? Is there a hardware difference, or is this a software glitch causing an error? What gives?

Yes, there is a hardware difference. Some Vibrants are shipping with larger NAND memory. I believe it was 300MB more.

Just be glad we don't have the 4GB internal space that the G2 has with ~1.5GB left for the user.
I was wondering that also. Thanks for the info.
Is there anyway to get the hardware specs for the two different versions of the phone? I find all of this interesting because t mobile told me I must be mistaken that there were no hardware differences between vibrants.

Nexus s RAM

I bet this has been asked many times. I did a search but did not come up with anything usefull.
How come the nexus s is not using all of the 512mb of ram that it has?
Thanx.

The space available are calculated using this formula.

I know people always say put in an SD card, but internal storage is FAR superior to microSD. MicroSD is a great convenience, but I would take large internal capacity over microSD anyday.

flashing an international ROM and freezing unused apps works great to cut lag, and the newer XXUBMEA intl ROMs do allow many apps to be installed on SD card, so it does free SOME storage up (but not a whole lot more than what it came with stock, ie about 9GB for the 16GB version and 25GB for the 32GB version)

false advertising from samsung and AT&T

Received my shiny new toy today to rush into getting everything set up. went into task manager and notices there were only 2.38Gigs or ram usable. Thought this was a bit funny since missing .6gig is a ton of memory. I quickly ran benchmarks thanks to AnTuTu and when going into device details it confirmed that there is only 2.44 gigs of memory on board the device. Now i know there will be comments saying they have preinstalled system apps that take the memory but nothing would take up .6 gigs. Other threads i have found point that samsung is only putting chips in the phones that are 2.6~2.7gigs.
ibtimes.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3-release-date-nears-3gb-ram-handset-may-actually-contain-just-266gb-ram
I filled a complain and left a review warning other buyers of this issue.
I hope im wrong on this because for the price i really would like to get what i paid for. love samsung things but they are a crap company when it comes to their customers and doing the right thing.
Let me know what you think if this is just me over reacting or real issues from samsung.
I think the adreno 330 uses 600mb. That plus memory hungry TWZ there is barely any memory left. Basically Samsung had to give the phone 3gb or it would just plain suck
I wonder how much ram other phones have with only 2gb of ram, like the Z1, Z ultra, and G2?
Check out this thread

Thats what I thought. But I cant wrap my mind around .6gigs.
The s4 has 2 gig on board and in task manager you have 1.8 available. The note2 is almost identical with that with 1.75 usable.
The s4 has 1080P as well without that memory drain. The only thing I could think of software wise would be something with s pen and its new features.
How much could change from note2 to note3 to take that space.

What I'm not understanding is why are you so hung up about .6gb out of 3gb? What do you think your going to do with the other .6 if you did have it?
You know I don't ever remember Samsung making any type of a statement that the phone had 3gb of usable ram, it was just stated that the phone would come with 3gb of ram and it does doesn't it?

Thas write; its only gots 2.38GB of RAMs because .5GB is used by the GPU (Adreno). Its beens that way sinces the SGS3s cames outs.
Non-discrete graphics on PCs also allocate "X" amount of available RAM for themselves. But good luck with that petition, lawsuit, and crusade you're about to embark upon.

I'm no expert. But I'm pretty sure the note 3 has allocated ram for graphics processing. So that is where your .6gb is. Right?

Let's say you install 12gb of memory in your computer, boot it up, check the memory manager, and you will see maybe 10 gb available. This is completely normal, because the operating system ie; windows 7 or 8, allocates what it needs to operate. Same holds true for Amdroid devices. The Note 3 does indeed have 3gb of memory. You can freeze/stop applications you don't use or need that load at boot, eating some of that memory. Just go to the application manager and go through the list amd freeze/stop what you don't need, freeing up memory. Currently, my Note 3 actively uses only 850mb on average, leaving me with well over a gb of free memory, which is more than enough. Hope this helps.

Also keep in mind that the Adreno 330 is an onboard graphics chip, which requires system.memory to finction. Someday, we'll have discrete graphics chips, with dedicated memory. This phone is amazing, and the most powerful phone on the market right now.
