Hey everyone.
Im gonna sell my Nexus 10 because its too big for me. I cant play games or surf the web comfortably. I use my tablet a lot everyday, much more than my phone, so I need it to be comfortable.
I think 8 inches is the perfect size for tablets, so Ive decided Im not gonna buy the Nexus 7.
So this leaves me with the Note 8.0 or the upcoming LG G Pad 8.3. This one has a 1080P screen and Snapdragon 600 (which Im not sure if its better than the CPU in the Note 8.0).
Both have 4.2.2, 2GB RAM, microSD slot, etc.
Do you guys think I should go for the LG because of the higher screen resolution or for the Note 8.0? It also has better materials, with the back being aluminum instead of plastic. It also has something similar to Multiwindow and another positive is the on screen buttons, much better suited for a tablet than capacitive and hardware buttons of the Note.
I must add I will have absolutely no use for the S Pen. I dont care for that and dont need it, so this will not factor in favor of the Note. Maybe I could even go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

Sounds like you're in my situation. I sold my N10 due to the lag and size and got myself a Note 8. I thought I'd like the stylus more than I do, so I barely use it, even while browsing the Web. I plan to sell my Note 8 for a G Pad once it releases due to the better internals and screen. If you don't care about the stylus, just wait for the G Pad.
The only thing I'll miss about the Note 8 is the multi window feature. It's so nice for meetings if you need two apps open or need to take notes while viewing a PDF.
EDIT: stay away from the tab 3. It sucks.
I think a lot depends on what you will use it for. If you take notes I have to say the Note 8 is a great tablet. The LG looks pretty sweet, not sure the 600 is a step up from the 54xx in the note.

Yeah. I think 7 inches is too small to use for hours every day at home.
LG G Pad 8.3 to be available October 14th in Korea and other markets by the end of the year.
Price: 510$.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

What about LTE and using this as a phone replacement. I am leaning toward Note 8.0 because I like the idea of using it with a smartwatch.
The Snapdragon 600 is better than the SoC in the Note 8. In fact, considerably so. It is the same SoC as in the Galaxy S4, and benchmarks significantly higher than the Note 8, especially for video. Real world usage though, I don't notice much of a difference, if any. Perhaps it would not be ideal to push a 1080p display though.
If you have no use for the S-Pen, why would you even consider the Note 8? It is only worth the price if you have an actual use for the pen. Unlike the iPad Mini or the Nexus 7, it is not a tablet for the general public, and was never meant to be.
I just sold my note 10 and got the 8, the LG I read has no promised updates, the note 8 is promised key lime pie.. I love my note
I don't agree with the statement saying the Note 8 was not intended for the general public. Thats complete nonsense.
The cpu in the Note 8 is also faster than the Snapdragon. Its the gpu that isn't as fast.

I'm selling my Note 8 for the G Pad. The G Pad has better internals, better screen, better design and materials. I don't use the S Pen nearly as much as I thought I would so there's no point in me hanging on to this. Besides, I'd just put CM on the G Pad, so updates don't matter from LG. If you put CM on the Note 8, you'd be missing 90% of the features.
I'm in the market for a new 8" tablet as well and the only android tablet that currently fits that criteria is the Tab 8 or Note 8.
I'm very interested in the G Pad 8.3 as well but the thing is there any indicator that there will be developers developing for it here in XDA? I don't think LG's software is any good and I'd love it if any AOSP roms are available it.

You don't have to agree, but given it's price point as compared to the nexus 7 and ipad mini, I'm right. It was never intended as a mainstream tab and will never sell nearly as many units as the other tabs I mentioned. If you have no use for the pen, there are cheaper tabs out there.

i agree that the note 8 isn't targeted to the general public. the price and features make it a more concentrated device made for those who need or want the spen and wacom digitizer. a gen pub device price would have fallen in line with other devices. add the fact that promotion on most note products isn't very prevalent.

I've just ordered my G Pad for 314€ with postage in price. The other candidates were the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 ME302C (with Intel) for about 340€, and Ainol Novo 9 Spark for 250€. The MeMO Pad is a bit too big for me. The Spark has meaningless high resolution (aka Retina) and it's just an "Ainol"... you know... sh!ty components and stuff.
The ideal tablet size would be somewhere about 8,9"-9", so the LG's G Pad with 8,3" is the closest to it. And for it's price it offers some really nice HW and build quality. I just hope the ROM cookers and devs will like it too
About those W8 8" tablets, I dont know, I don't really trust W8 is enough multimedial and optimized for use on tablets. I prefer Android

Hello I'm intrigued by the S Pen, I'm just wondering if those of you with the 10" tablet are able to comfortably draw and sketch on it? I don't really want to have to wait until Q2 for the Note 8. I do like the smaller form factor though. I had an iPad for a while and sold it because it was too heavy and bulky. I had a Nexus 7 and liked it much better. I just want to get the input from you owners. Does the note 10.1 feel heavy and bulky to you? I'm trying to figure out if the 8.0 would have enough room to draw on, I think it would though. I messed around with the 10 today at BB today and was surprised how nice the software was and how accurate the pen was. What should I do? Thanks.
It feels fine to me but I'm a big guy with big hands I had 7" tablets before and if drawing is what u going to do get the 10.1

Thanks. Im a big guy too, just withh average sized hands haha. I just wish Samsung would release a price on the 8.0 because that is a factor considering I have another tablet I've paid for. The problem I used to have with my iPad is my arms and neck would start hurting after a while, but I was attempting to play a lot of games on it, I think drawing on a table wit the note 10 would be much easier.
After using my note 10.1, my galaxy tab 2 7.0 seems absolutely puny now. I tried drawing on my note 2, and it's a touch too small. I would say go with the note 10. It's a little more useful, and you have a n7 for portability.
Yeah I feel the same way use to use my gf nexus 7 and think wow th his is big by comparison to my gs3 note with my note I feel like I can use the n7 as a phone by comparison to my note 10.1. Its a bit big at first but you will get use to it, it comes down to personal preference really what feels good in your hands

I think the Galaxy Note 10.1 is too small sometimes (when I multiwindow, for instance) so I'd imagine the 8 would have that feeling amplified..

I heard the note 8 has a TFT display which typically doesn't have good viewing angles,but thats hinting at it being more of a budget tablet. So I'm not sure. I can get a note 10.1 off ebay for under $400 so price isn't a big deal I guess.

I had the tab 7.7 and LOVED it...why they dropped amoled on the 8 is a mystery to me, and very disappointing. Im 6'3" and 165 lbs. My hands are plenty big, and I STILL fin myself having to move them while holding the 10.1 in both hands....if I DIDNT use it for drawing, id get a smaller tablet.

Problem with high def screens and amoled is power consumption. Lots more pixels to power up seems to be more efficient to use tft at that point in size.

Thanks, your comment really reminds me Why I don't like 10inch tablets. I remember the iPad 4 I had was absolutely beautiful screen and had excellent performance, but that wasn't enough to make me keep it. It was very tiring using it more than a few minutes at a time. I've seen some of the amazing drawings people have created on the Gnote 2, so I don't think 8 inches would be too small at all because I'm typically a small drawer anyway. I am going to wait it out I guess, and at least hear the pricing for the Gnote8, couldn't be too long hopefully.
Also when I said it has a TFT LCD, I was thinking TN display which is horrible so that not a big concern at all. If its around $300 I will be getting the note 8.0
Get the samsung ativ smart pc, its 11.6" with s-pen, dockable keyboard like transformer and windows RT or windows 8 depending on how much you pay.
Otherwise, the 10.1 is a good size for drawing, havent tried the 8 yet.honestly for me,sometimes the 10.1 is a little small taking notes in class. But it may not be the case for everyone

2) This means crisper webfonts which was always the big knock on the Note 10.1 - web text has the jaggies.
3) There is a significant difference in writing space on an 8 vs a 7 in screen. I've owned 7 inch tablets and the iPad Mini (7.9) seems MUCH larger.
4) In a pinch you can slip an 8 inch tablet into a front pants pocket. With the Note 10.1 you are committed to carrying it.
5) Timing. The closer we get to release of the Note 8.0, especially if the price of the wifi version comes in under $350, demand for the Note 10.1 is going to plummet. We have already seen Bestbuy cut their price by $50. Expect that to go lower. If you can wait you may be able to pick up a Note 10.1 for $399 brand new. Also Craigslist and eBay will be full of Note 10.1 owners selling their almost new tablets at big discounts to buy a Note 8.0.
6) While the Note 10.1 has been a sort of meh seller, I expect the Note 8.0 to be wildly popular (unless they price it too high). Also the higher ppi will be a big deal. That means more Dev support. Good thing.

Thanks, I agree with everything you said. I forgot the poi is only 149 on the Gnote10.1. I don't want fuzzy text! I also keep thinking back to my previous 10" tablets and they were not pleasant experiences. I didn't mention this before but I have an iPad mini as well, and its absolutely brilliant when it comes to picking it up and just doing anything you want. I'm going to wait for the note 8.0 and possibly preorder if Samsung does that not sure?

I think you could make the argument that one reason Samsung has not yet announced pricing for the Note 8.0 is that the wifi version will be $299 and they don't want to utterly destroy Note 10.1 sales between now and the day they release. Just for reference the Note 8.0 will be about as wide as the Note 2 is in landscape. So, if you have ever tried writing on the Note 2 in landscape you will know it is plenty wide.

Both are technically too big for one hand but I find the one with the larger bezel easier to hold since you can rest your thumb on it.
Also obviously the note 8 performs better (quad vs dual, 1.5GB vs 2GB of RAM), but unless you are hardcore you probably won't notice real life performance differencs
Development is too early to tell.
My view is that the price difference just doesn't justify getting the Tab 3 (You can get the Note 8 for only $25 - 50 more if you really look)

There's plenty of threads/videos that can already help you make a decision. Not trying to be mean or anything, just letting you know.. So anyway, Yes I do love my note 8.0 its a perfect size. I love it because I bought it, hated stock, rooted it, installed civs reflex ROM, I feel complete.

The Note 8.0 wins hands down.
More memory, More internal Sdcard space, Better CPU and a Stylus to impress your friends.
It fits fine in one Hand for me when I need to but I normally use it in landscape mode.
It even fits fine in the front pocket of my work pants. Docker type.
Unless you are strapped for cash spend the extra 50+ bucks and get the Note 8.0.
I have seen it online for as low as 349.00
The note's the better device, but I think that the Tab will get more dev time because of the price differential.
I have a Nex 7 now, and the pace of development is breathtaking - two kernels and a modular ROM in 24 hours. I think some of that is due to folks liking pure Android, and a lot of it is down to price.
But I also think that if folks compare the N7 and the tab 8 side by side, they may prefer the color balance of the tab 8. I think Samsung and Best Buy may have made a mistake in placing the Samsung devices away from the others - makes side by side comparison much more of a challenge.
I like the resolution of the N7, sure, but text is gray, not black and the color doesn't seem nearly as accurate overall.

Looking for a decent mid-range Android tablet? Well, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch would be a good choice. It is light, portable, and capable enough to be used for not only web surfing and writing emails, but also for watching HD movies and even playing some Real Racing 3 every once in a while. The device doesn't have any flaws that would make it a deal breaker, so if it fits your budget, go ahead and grab one!
But the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is faster than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch and offers the S Pen digital stylus for drawing and handwriting input. Anyway, I like my galaxy tab and I sometimes take some good tips from aneesoft tablets column.

I love the Note 10.1 Gen1. Im using a custom ROM but stockrom feels so smooth on the tablet.
Ill probably buy it (maybe) beacuse of the Spen features (Which I probably wont use anyway) new Highres LCD & battery.
But it'll be expensive here in tiny Sweden
I liked the old note 10.1 coz my brother has it and I use regularly, also I have note 2 and multiwindows on bigger screen would be awesome especially in college lectures

Seriously though....I just went to Microcenter and played around with the old transformer pad infinity and the 1 speaker that is on it is horrible! I also like the minimal bezel on the note and the S-pen is starting to intrigue me. That and the multi-window ability. I guess you can say the new note is #1 on my list now. They need to release this soon!
Main reason is the screen, so I can watch all those nice 1080p mkvs, also I hope the new cpu will be able to decode 10bit ones (mainly anime).
Another reason is s-pen, because I dont really like touching the (tablet) screen with my fingers which obstruck the view (and leave fingerprints), also occasional drawing with pressure sensing is nice too.
I've had the Samsung Tab 10.1 and the Note 10.1 and loved both so going with this comes naturally for me.
Plus with my Samsung LED TV I'll be all connected!
Also the screen, true multitasking, expandability, reduced size and styling as well....

I won't never buy a new phone/tablet with Tegra Processor.
I can remember the HOX times, when the Tegra is an ISSUE for all the modding thing.
I was about to buy a GN10.1 2012 Edition and decided to see if anything new was announced at IFA. It was so I held off on getting the old model. Key reasons for getting it, 32GB + 64GB microSD support, 4.3, 3GB RAM, SCREEN Resolution, S-Pen, pairs with the GG Watch and it will work well with the GN3 that I already ordered.
I took all of my multimedia apps and most of my games off of my phone in favor of a tablet. It was just a matter of deciding which one I wanted. This is the one for me.
So I can post screen shots and pictures of my home screen when that thread opens.
This will be my first tablet. I used N7 for sometime in past, but didn't like it. Found that useless for anything. Note series can be more 'productive' than other tablets in market. Now with better internals, screen this looks like a good option.
I will have to wait for prices to come down a bit, things are crazy expensive out here.
The Galaxy Note Tablet series can be the best in the tablet market
They have a lof of features that other don't have.

And, atm, Asus don't have all the features that the Note have
Changed the way I study. 720p is not great for multitasking or having a PDF plus lecturenotes side by side when studying.

Note 10.1 2014 can be a cool combination between note taking, book reading, movie watching and software architectural diagram drawing. My Note 2 plays 1080p movies like a charm, and when you pack a 64gb microsd with it, everything is basically paradise. There is no other device on earth can do all those in a real professional and awesome way. Plus im planning to test drive the octa-core and opencl functionalities for some cv projects. Can't wait to get mine!

Recommend what lol? You didn't say anything. I'm not a fan of Samsung but I like the Note 2014. I've been waiting for a nexus 10 refresh but am thinking about other 8 inch options. I'm honestly just as lost as you are. I've never had a tablet and I'm still not sure if I need one

I would definitely recommend a Note 8 if you're looking for a small form factor tablet.
There are a number of pros to the Note 8 that I can think of, that personally aided my decision in buying one.
- Screen and Device. Slightly bigger than the Nexus 7, and not as big as a full sized tablet. My hands get very uncomfortable with large tablets, and the screen is of a perfect size and weight to do whatever tasks I want to do on the tablet. Not too big, not too small, but just right. Screen is also very easy on the eyes. You would think at 1200x800 resolution it wouldn't be crisp, but in fact the display is excellent for web browsing, reading, etc. I read books and comic books without having to zoom in at all.
- S-Pen. Perfect for writing and drawing. My son and I love playing hangman on it. It's a lot more accurate than using a finger, and since he's young he can easily practice his writing.
- Speed. This tablet has definitely got some power. When I got the Note 8, I wasn't expecting it to be as fast and responsive as it is. It never lags along and is extremely snappy with its tasks -- in the event that it does lag, it can easily be overclocked to 1.7GHz, 1.8GHz or even 1.9GHz with minimal loss of battery power.
- Build Quality. It may be plastic on the back, but it's sturdy, and the glass is top notch. Would be nicer with the fake-leather rear like the 2014 edition Note/Note 3.
- TouchWiz. Just kidding, haha. Nobody likes TouchWiz

EDIT: Totally forgot to mention expandability! Toss a 64GB MicroSDXC inside this sucker and you've got tons of storage for books, music, movies, etc. If you root, you can also use applications like FolderMount to copy large application data to the MicroSD card, so you aren't limited to the internal storage for your apps.

Tegra Note 7 is very similar to the Galaxy Note devices in the fact that it also has an included stylus and dock within the device to hold said stylus. Not many devices come with this feature anymore, and it's something that I wish more manufacturers would employ. At last another manufacturer sees the benefit of at least having option of a stylus there to use if the user pleases, or somewhere to put it in case they don't. As the owner of a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 myself, I am ever so grateful of the dock on the bottom right of my tablet to stick my stylus when it's not in use. Otherwise yeah, I probably would have lost the stylus countless times by now. But I digress - the fact that NVIDIA includes this feature on the Tegra Note 7 already makes it a tablet to consider, particularly as a rival to the more expensive Galaxy Note 8.0, which costs $349.
While it may not be the greatest tablet, Sprint is offering the 7 inch Samsung Tab 3 for free (technically it's $50 with a $50 rebate) with a 2 year contract. What makes it attractive is that data plans start at $5/mo.

Another thing to consider if you can get the 3G (N5100) model is that you have always on email, web etc.
I think the Note 8 is very good. I'm happy with it and while I want more than 16 GB (actually 9.? if not rooted), I haven't run out of RAM yet.

Amazon's tablets are better if you already are invested in Amazons stuff (like Instant Video or Amazon Prime). Both are cheap and feature excellent hardware options.

LG's G Pad 8.3 on Google Play is basically a Nexus 7 with a larger screen and slower updates. Everything else is a fairly minor difference, unless it's an aspect that matters to you.

I agree with you but you should also consider the screen size (8" instead of 7"). I've compared both N7 and Note 8 and the size difference is quite important without increasing the weight or necessary space for it.

I'm still happy with my purchase and the deal I got on it ($259 USD via Newegg). The Samsung Pro 8.4 is the only one that makes me blink. Faster chip, good. Marginally larger battery to deal with the screen, bad. Touchwiz, higher resolution screen, meh. The G Pad, for its meager shortcomings, offers a heckuva lot of bang for the buck, at the price I got it anyway. Not regretting it!

Lol yeah I missed that deal I live in New jersey so payed tax $300 so if it's around $300 -$350 I would be all for it lol. My gpad comes tomorrow so well see I guess. It should have pretty good development support and accessories.

I feel the same. The 8.4 inch display model is pretty sweet.. Pricing may be a bit higher, so again.. I wouldn't buy it just cause of that. And the 3 hardware buttons on the front is a no go. It's old and I don't like it as much as having a blank screen where it's just me and the screen/movie/book.. The over all design looks good ol' fashion Samsung. Looks sturdy and has kindof a Galaxy S2 feel to it. The S2 was the best mobile phone I've ever had. Damn a lot of stuff happened back then. But yeah, looks like a decent tablet. But I think I'll be quite happy with the G Pad still, since it does have what I'm looking for in a nice, cheap package and decent build quality.
The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa CPU is a new gen processor which samsung tries to make it use all eight cores at once. If a tablet with that chip comes out it will surely be very powerful and definitely better than gpad.
As long as Samsung uses a home button i will never buy again.I'm very happy with the pad.
The new Touch Wiz looks really awful. I don't even know what they're thinking. It's like they want it to work and look like Windows 8 but don't want to use Windows 8. Personally I wouldn't touch the new tabs with a 10 foot pole.

I am an owner of note 10.1 2012 ..... I am looking up to
Change my tab as there is no updates for it at all ... Till now it is on version 4.1.2 and it is 100% guaranteed now after these pro tablets unveiled there will be no updates for the older devices ... I wont buy any of these new pro tablets because of the price firstly and in the future they will be thrown to the dust like my note 10.1 now ..... Also i am thinking of getting lg g pad 8.3 but no software updates like my current note and lack of dev support keeps me away
I'd be very surprised if the 8.4 was less than $399. I'm sure Samsung considers it to be fully equivalent to the newest iPad mini. Samsung used to compete on price but no more. When I bought my first plasma TV in 2007 Samsung was a much better deal than Panasonic or Pioneer. When it came time to buy another one last year I thought Samsung was too expensive and bought an LG I'm very happy with.

Quite simply, I am going to switch to a Tab Pro 8.4 as soon as it is available.
It has a way better display, it has NFC (which I miss), it's way more powerful (G Pad is pretty slow), it has a polycarbonate back (I dislike the faux leather, I would much rather have a rubber back like the Nexus 7 2013 or the old Samsung HyperGlaze but anything is WAY, WAY better than effing METAL!!!!) and the Samsung one is the best version of Android around (MultiWindow *alone* would do it for me).
I can't wait to get my hands on it.
P.S. Actually, the ONLY reason I am interested in mid-sized tablets (8"/8.5") is WEIGHT.
Anything beyond 350/400 grams is simply too heavy to be ergonomic and truly comfortable for extended use.
The new Samsung Tab Pro 10.1" is 469grams and I am planning on trying it out with the intention of switching back to a 10.1"...
Ideally, my perfect tablet would be something like the Note Pro 12.2" but would weigh no more than 400 grams with an all-day battery life... (which is, of course, not technically possible. YET).

Pretty Slow? Try CM 11, Stock is slow. Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.
I am sort of disappointed that the G Pad is no longer the best 8 incher but it's still pretty great so its fine...
I doubt I will bite. I like my LG 8.3 GPE a lot. Samsung does this to me every year: announce something that captures my imagination, I'm intrigued, I convince myself it will be at a palatable price point, and then finally delivers something I consider too expensive and doesn't hit the sweet spot for my tastes.
I do own a Galaxy Note 10.1, and I love it. But the 2014 edition left me a bit cold.
I doubt I will dip into these waters again, probably just upgrading to a new Nexus 10 when the timing feels right.
I'm very happy with my G Pad and won't switch. If the Samsung 8.4 was available a couple of weeks ago at a competitive price I would have taken it, simply due to previous experience with both LG and Samsung phones. I like the idea of hard buttons on the bezel - means more screen space. There will also be more development on the Samsung tablets.

The G Pad with CM11 or the G Pad GPE are surely faster but you would have to give up, among other things, Knock On, the IR Remote and full SDcard support and those are huge deal breakers for me.
True, LG's ROM is most certainly slower and laggier than stock Android but it's also way more feature complete (which is probably also *why* is slower...). Features that I do use.
Besides the ones just mentioned, there are dozens of things like Quickmemo, the overlay apps (QSlide), the keyboard with the numbers row, the volume and brightness sliders and on and on...
Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.

I also forgot to mention that notwithstanding pretty much identical size and weight, the display is sensibly bigger on the Tab Pro as it's not only 0.1" physically bigger but it also doesn't have virtual buttons taking up screen real estate.
So, far from "useless"... The money I will lose selling the G Pad and buying the Tab Pro is really a very small price to pay for such a big upgrade.
P.S. I am not dissing my G Pad, still like it a lot and still think it's the overall best mid-size tablet on the market right now.
I have no intentions of switching as i really love this lg. I also suspect that these new Pro models will not be cheap. For my uses the lg is plenty fast and smooth. And since a tablet is just entertainment for me, there is only so much any tablet is worth and i bet these new Samsung tablets will exceed that price.

What Rom will it come with? I've learned to only buy with Qualcomm cpus because they get the best long-term support. There's a chance that the Qualcomm ones are only for lte support....

You said switching to a notepro 8.4 would be a small price to pay, but you have no idea how much its going to cost. I bet at least 400.
BTW, knock on works just fine on CM 11. IR support is missing, haven't tried a SD card. Is it not going to work? Oh, and be sure the new bloated "pro" touchwiz will be slower than the lg rom.
