[Q] What charger to get? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I'm on the road I use my phone a lot for navigation. The charger I have now can barely keep the current charge while the phone is navigating and I don't know if it's the charger or the old battery in the phone. My Note 3 is arriving tomorrow and I'd like to know which charger should I get that'll charge the phone even while it's navigating and with the screen on. Will any 2 amp charger do?
Thanks.

My Note 2 used to have the same problem even with a 2.1Amp charger. I found that the lead between the charger and the phone can make a big difference. I used the "'Galaxy Charging Current" app to check which lead was best. Not Benn on a long enough journey with the Note3 yet to see how well it stands up. GCC is at
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free
Whilst there are an increasing number of car chargers up to 2.5A now, I used an iPad one with success in the past.

The Note 3 draws only 1,200 mA (1.2A).
Therefore charger over 1.2A is redundant because the device only receives that much.
The stock charger is 2.1A. But like I said, phone only draws 1.2A.
Download the app mentioned above. It's very useful.

Thanks for the responses. Can you guys recommend a car charger brand?

Not true, my charger has done less than 10% to fully charged in less than 1.75 hours. 1.2a would take 2.5 hours at least

I just checked Galaxy Charging Current app and it's saying 1800 now.
But that's because it's 100% full now.
Earlier it was 1200.

I too use navigation and browser a lot while on road. My Galaxy Note2 was having pretty good battery life compared to Note 3 now. To survive, I got a 12,000 mh iNova power bank. Does a good job to survive.

normal charge time? after 2hrs, 35%--->98%

is that normal?
i went from around 35% to 98% in less than 2hours charging via NON stock cable/non stock adapter
9:43am - 11:35am to be exact
My phone takes about 2 - 2.5 hours to charge from 5% to 100% so yes, that's likely normal more or less.
From 0-10% takes 3 hours roughly. You're okay.

Depends on the charger. I think the nexus 4 ships with a 1-amp charger. Quick chargers will charge faster (usually 2-amp or higher), but are not good for your battery's life expectancy.
You are lucky!
It takes my phone about 8.5 hours to go from 10% to 100% with the stock 1.2A charger....
I suspect a faulty USB connector on the phone.
It takes me 3 hours to go from 0 – 100. I am not using the stock charger. I am using the old charger from my g2. I guess I should try using the stock charger.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The majority of your phones charge takes place from ~80-100%.
0 to ~80% should be a "quick charge" that will take much less time to complete.
Also, the charger being more than the stock Amps shouldn't affect the time.
Less, yes. More, no.
The phone will only accept a maximum charge rate that the manufacturers have deemed "acceptable" or "safe" for the device.
hi,
perhaps slightly off-topic, but still about the charger...
So I have the original LG nexus 4 charger, and I also have charger from my samsung tablet. One thing I noticed is that my nexus would charge from any of these two, however the tablet would charge only from its original charger (looks like it requires more output power??). Now my question is: is it ok to charge Nexus from the (more powerful) samsung tablet charger?? Or is it going to affect in any way the battery lifetime, and i should use original charger for each device?

Hi,
What is your charge time?
Mine is 2 to 2 and a half hours.
Which battery and/or charger are you using? After coming from the S2 I have noticed a large decrease in charging time with my S4, so this is very surprising to me.

...*facepalm*. You're not using original charger and you're complain that the one you use doens't works so well? Do you know that original charger is pulling 2000mA out, while your usb-port is pulling between 300mA and 500mA (depends if it front or back usb-port and the quality of usb port). Do the math, 2600mAh battery and 300mA / h. Full charge should take: 2600:300 = more than 8.5 hours.
With original charger S4 recharges from 0 to 100 in 1h 49minutes. If you take a solar charger it will charge even slower (like 48 hours for 0-100%).
Next time try to use your brain before complaining.

Your Samsung power brick has the cable physically attached to it? If not, you can just use a longer cable with the Samsung power supply.
The included power supply is 2 Amps, whoever is getting long charging times, make sure you use either the original Samsung power supply, or comparable in amperage supply.
Mine charges in 2 and a half hours.
Mine takes 2 to 2.5 h to charge from 0 to 100 percent. You should only use the new white charger, it's more powerful than the black one from s3, it's output is 2.0A ,old one is only 1.0A. Newer use other chargers as they may mess up your battery or phone.

I have to check the amps but based on google the Nokia Charger is at 1.3 Amps. I need to remind myself to switch the short Samsung to longer Nokia cables.
Is it safe to get a higher Amp charger, the one that the iPad uses to charge my S4? No drawback execpt for a faster charging time right?

Take it this way, grilling meat takes for example 45minutes to cook completely. You take it to some powerful furnace like 2000degrees for 5minutes then what do you expect from it to give you back? Well cooked meat or some burned meat outside and maybe raw inside?

put it this way... the s3 comes with a 700ma charger. it charges a bit slow. and has a 2100mah battery.
the s4 comes with a 2 amp charger. thats 2000ma. it doesnt charge slowly if you use this charger. i personally am going to pop it on this charger when i get home from work and then keep it on my 700ma charger overnight... no reason to waste that powerful output, it will simply waste electricity.
make sure:
1. you use the charger that came with it
2. you use a cable thats as long as (or shorter than) the stock charging cable. longer usb cables tend to charge the phone slower.
also keep in mind usb ports charge any phone slowly. the s4 will charge even slower on them because the battery is oversized compared to most.
I'm using note 2 charger and if I surf Web while charging, literally it is not charging at all.. battery is not going up or down.. Note 2 was not like this.. i could charge battery even if I play 3d game..

Its better than the s3 but I have to agree... I'm waiting on zero lemon. I had their 2300mah battery for the s3 and got around 6 hours screen time regularly...the s4 give me about 4 1/2 hrs screen time with around 10-11 hours on...which is about 2-3hrs less than I need. The stock charger is 2mA output and my s4 600 version takes 2 hours 10 mins from 1/5% to full. S3 charger is only 1mA. And the quad core qualcomm 600 should charge faster than exynos version cause its have a quick charge built in to most of the 600 cpu's except the htc one. Bet exynos takes 3 hours

One question:
I have the S4 I9500.
I use here at home my wife's S2 charger which is 0,7mA and sometimes I use S3 charger/data cable which is 1mA.
At work or other places normally I use the S3 charger/data cable.
The S4 charger is unused at box because I don't like the white color (mainly the cable, because it gets dirty so fast).
I tried the S4 charger with S3 data cable and the thing is charging reaaaaally fast.
I don't mind using the S4 white charger, so, are there any problems using the S4 charger with S3 data cable?
No problem at all

Charging at only 800-1000 instead of 1800

Hi,
My Note 2 charging has become drastically slow in the recent times. Initially, when i checked the charging current using the GCC app (galaxy charging current), it showed me 1800 and now it never goes beyond 1000 and most of the times, it's between 800-900.
I have tried doing a factory reset and the problem still occurs.
Any clue on how to increase the charging capacity?
The reason I want the phone to charge at its max capacity is because I travel a lot and I do not get a lot of time to charge my phone and with its current state, I barely get 10 percent charge in 15-20 mins...
Please advice...
Thanks,
Dinesh

Tried various cables. Same issue. It never goes beyond 1000 mAh and most of the times, its at 800 mAh.
EDIT: It worked with a new SGS 4 cable. So looks like the cable is faulty.

Correct guys, the included cable in the package will only give you around 800-1000MA. I have read a thread about this here so what I did I swap my white cable to a different one (original cable of Note 1) and the charging capacity of my note 2 is now 1800MA.

The cable does seem to degrade over time .Mine would even seem to get loose much easier than before. It happened to me. I ended up buying a heavy duty cable from Amazon that makes a secure and tight connection to the phone and charging has become so much faster now.

Tried using an S4 cable and it gives me 1800mAh charge properly.
Then I tried an HTC One X cable and it's steady at 1500 ( not too bad).
I'm going to the service center to ask for a replacement cable.
with perseus (with the same hardware) it works perfectly.

Exynos variant does not support fast charging while Qualcomm does...
35 hours or more of total battery life with 6 1/2 to 7 hours of screen time. I play a lot of intense games so my screen time is lower, but I've easily been able to get 5 1/2 of screen time out of this thing playing Galaxy on Fire 2 and it's like one of the most demanding mobile games available.

the exnyos does have a full powered charge at up to 80% then trickles to 100%. it takes mine about 4-5 hours to go 0-100. it doesn't use qualcomms quick charge tech, but it doesn't trickle the whole way. if it takes 7 hrs then the charger or cable could be bad or the tablet may not be telling the charger to send 2amps.

It's pretty slow. Almost 30% slower than the N10.1-12 a lot of us came from. It's the move from Samsung's proprietary 30-pin connector to standard microUSB. The N10 using a pogo pin charger (vs. its standard microUSB) is about 30-40% faster than what's shown below.

that article was what concerned me before i bought the tablet, but i went ahead and got it anyway. the only time that mine had actually nearly taken that long was on the first few charges. sometimes it would be stuck at trickle and wouldn't pull the full power (i actually only get an average of 1.6A from the stock charger and cable - I've never verified the volts. i could stick it on my killawatt and see what it pulls. after those few quirks i don't see charge times as long as anand has reported. it's always that last 80% that's a killer. it seem to take from 1.5-2hrs depending. i can go from 37% to 80% in 2hrs then i have to wait nearly as long for the last 20%. i think it's a battery saving technique that samsung is using. toyota's reports showed that charging the battery to 80% capacity extened the life. on my 700t there's a battery saving option that won't charge the battery over 80%.

USB 3.0 doesn't impact charging time, at least not yet. And the S-800 version of the N10.1-14 does use the same SoC as the N3 and someone here with a SM-P605 reported getting a full charge in about 5 hours and 80% in 3.
Charging is an interesting story on the Note 3, but primarily because of what doesn’t change. The Note 3 continues to use Samsung’s tablet charging specification and charger, which has 2 amps of maximum output. The Note 3 draws 2 amps over a considerable amount of the charging curve, like other Samsung devices (in the linear part of the charge curve). USB 3.0 doesn’t change things up here quite yet with the new supported charge voltages that are coming eventually with the power delivery specification.
The Note 3 does charge faster overall compared to the SGS4 however thanks in part to the new PMIC (PM8941) which is part of the overall 8974 platform story.

Just curious how accurate screen time readings are. Mine seems to be off. I've been on my device all morning and it seems to not reflect that.

lol, that's actually a feature that Donald Trump insisted be included in all white and black Notes to remind people they aren't part of the exclusive 1% who actually have solid gold Notes. Interestingly the solid gold Note consistently shows 1%.
See this is the odd thing - I had this tablet a month ago but got it exchanged because I found a cheaper one anyways on that tablet I am positive I was getting 6hrs screen time which was some youtube videos but majority was browsing the internet and that was it.
However on this new one I just got 9hrs30mins and that was with watching a 2hr movie streaming online, about 2hrs worth of streaming tv shows, loads of web browsing and also a little bit of Youtube...Personally I think this is awesome screen time (Mind you it's my first tablet so nothing to compare to but still). I am very happy with charge (5hrs) and battery drain on this tablet - very nice indeed.
Would love to squeeze 11 hours out of this like someone had in the earlier posts but that seems a tad difficult considering I already have brightness pretty low and all pointless apps disabled.
