Unlocked Note 3 LTE for the USA Market? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My apologies if this has been discussed before.
Is there, or has there ever planned on being, an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (LTE version) for the US market, which I could possibly region sim-unlock at a later time? I originally planned on purchasing a European unlocked LTE version, but after finding out both LTE won't work on AT&T and the phone is region sim-locked, I'm **** outta luck.
Thanks

AT&T allows you to unlock their phones if your account is in a good standing and you have been under contract with this phone for more than 6 months. You can request unlock code through AT&T website. Alternately, there are a bunch of paid sites out there, which will generate an unlock code for you based on your model # and IMEI, for $25-30USD.
You got options, if all you want is the worldwide voice capability. As you said, version with AT&T LTE bands will not have 4G connection in 99% of the other countries in the world. There is only a handful of other countries, which use LTE band 4 and only Puerto Rico uses band 17.

T-Mobile also allows you to unlock it when:
You pay in full
You pay it off

Does anyone know if the T-Mobile Version will work on AT&T LTE? Now that it is confirmed that the AT&T version is Bootloader Locked, that is my only other option. Otherwise it doesn't look like I'm going to be picking up an N3 unless Samsung comes out with a developer edition. Fingers Crossed.

Yes, it will: http://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones_data_devices/android/samsung-galaxy-note-3
AT&T uses the frequencies 700MHz band 17 & 29, 1700MHz band 4, 2300MHz band 30. However, very small % of AT&T LTE coverage uses bands 29, 30, so you will get AT&T LTE coverage with T-Mobile GN3 in 99% of the places.

Thanks for the info, I will probably go ahead and wait for those models to come out and get one of them. Besides, I do want to wait for a bit more developer support anyway. Do you know when those models are supposed to be coming out?

what worries me is that with only the tmob having the unlocked bootloader is that the custom roms will be far and few between. been very spoiled with 4.3 on my s4..

[Q] Unlock Radio for use on T-mobile?

This maybe early but I know it was done for AT&T Note 2, where the radio was enabled for use on T-mobile.

Once the bootloader is unlocked...most likely. This has been the case for the T-mobile/AT&T variants that have had the same hardware (Note 2, Skyrocket, SGS3).
Depending on where you are you can catch 4g. In tampa florida I get 4g in some area with the tmobile/att shared band

The Canadian Version SGH-i337m (similar to AT&T) is bootloader unlocked. Can you please suggest how can attempt to do this. I will be getting my phone in couple of days.

You will probably have to wait until a dev makes a zip. Here is a link to the thread on how to do it for the Note 2. THIS WILL NOT work for your S4, but I'm sure something similar will come along.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
Are T-Mobile bands supported at the hardware level on the AT&T model? I guess my question is, will flashing a T-Mobile radio on an AT&T GS4 allow it to use all of T-Mobile's LTE bands, or just the two bands that are shared between the two? If the two phones are really the same at the hardware level it would mean the same frequencies are supported and just that some are disabled in the modem firmware of the AT&T version.
Search is not working and I couldn't see any posts answering this question directly.
Not sure. I unlocked my phone early this morning to try it out and can't get more than EDGE with my T-Mobile sim

For anyone who may be interested in this, it seems both the AT&T and the T-Mobile Galaxy S4 have in fact the exact same hardware board. This can be seen in minute 48:00 of the AT&T SGS4 teardown video by Adam Outler. More information on this on this thread.
It seems there is hope for enabling all the bands of the T-Mobile version on this device after all.

[Q] S4 SGH-I337 or SGH-I337m? AT&T or Rogers?

Sorry moderators, put this in the wrong section last time! Feel free to delete previous post!
I spend 50% of my time in the US and 50% of my time in Canada and have a contract with both AT&T and with Rogers.
I am going to buy the S4 soon. Should I get the SGH-I337 variant with AT&T or the SGH-I337m variant with Rogers?
In about 14 months, I will be back in Canada (on Rogers) permanently. So far, I am leaning towards the AT&T variant due to greater rom availability, but I am worried about whether the S4 will work on Rogers 3G bands and LTE network.
The reason I am worried is that I am currently using an unlocked Sprint BB Tour 9630 Quadband on Rogers with specs:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 2100
CDMA/EVDO Rev A 800/1900
And the Roger's EDGE network barely functions on that phone (many disconnects).
I am a little unfamiliar with network bands, but can you let me know if the phone's 3G radio and LTE radio are identical across Rogers and AT&T?
I read somewhere that Rogers S4 uses 2600 MHz LTE Band and AT&T uses 700 MHz LTE. Is this true? Or does this phone have both LTE bands built in?
Thank you!
After a quick search, I believe both phones should have identical network capabilities.
So you should be able to get LTE and 4G access on either of the networks using either of the phone variants.
The 'M' after the model number is definitely a Canadian carrier thing and it makes no difference. I have a Galaxy S2 from Virgin/Bell which was sold in Canada as GT-i9100M but it was identical to the international GT-i9100. So much so, that I was able to flash the ROM for the international GT-i9100 on my phone without any modifications or complications.
Hope it helps! Or a more senior member can chime in and correct me!
i would recommend going with the rogers i337m. the only reason that there is more roms for at&t version is that there is a stronger demand for them. but any roms meant for i337 will also work on i337m.

Why would you choose the Rogers version?
if you were thinking about getting the s4 soon i would go with att variant like you said because of the rom availability, but if you were going to wait, let say a few weeks to a month i would just get the i337m because samsung will probably push another update to ruin djrbliss work to unlock the bootloader. just keep checking back to see if any update gets pushed through and youll be good

AT&T has a locked bootloader, but you can get it in 32GB. However there are works underway to get around the locks.
Rogers has an unlocked bootloader but only comes in 16GB. Unfortunately there are no ways that I know of to get around the lack of internal space and JB does not let you install apps on external SDcards.
Perfect. I'm going to trade my Blackberry Q10 for the AT&T S4 32gb.
Thanks!

[Q] Where to buy UNLOCK Galaxy Note 3 in US?

Can anyone tell me where I can buy an unlock GSM version of the Galaxy Note 3 in the US with good customer service and full warranty of the phone.
I don't like buying from sellers on Amazon as if the phone fails, it might be really difficult to get warranty or return.
Last time I was able to buy the HTC One Unlock from HTC directly. But doesn't seem that Samsung has anything similar.
Thanks in advance

There are are a few places that I know have carried unlocked GSM phones in the past.Try www.negrielectronics.com or www.mobilecityonline.com or www.welectronics.com they should be able to get you what you want. I would also suggest getting a SquareTrade Warranty to cover it for damage since it will be pricey.
I can vouch for Negri Electronics, I've bought a GSM unlocked Galaxy S3 from them before. Does anyone know if there is a GSM unlocked version that works with AT&T LTE? Would really like to keep my unlimited data plan on AT&T. Thanks.
There will be options, but pretty much guaranteed that it will be an international version. Hence no LTE support..
ATT has been locking down the bootloader s recently and now the knox... No more development for ATT devices....

Most prbly by unlocked they mean Sim unlocked-you can use it on another carrier. I highly doubt that the bootloader is unlocked that if its the At&t version.

Which model to buy for full freedom

I am on ATT but I am tired of ATT BS and locked bootloaders and ROM work arounds. I want to be able to use international ROMs. Plus I want to have my ATT LTE.
I want freedom to have me device my way and with any carrier sim. With this said money is not the issue. So what do I buy. If I am reading things right the answer is a T-Mobile Version and then cancel the contract and put my ATT SIM in the Note 3.
Can anyone confirm or advise?
Want your cake (international version) and eat it too (non-international LTE) AND complain because getting both requires a bit of work? LOL
No carrier is going to let you have full freedom w/o you going behind their back (i.e. unlocking bootloaders and custom ROMs)

The T-Mobile appears to have an unlocked Bootloader and unlocked if paid in full. So that sounds like a clean unit to me. That I am free to load Intonational ROM's etc...
If you don't mind 32GB only of internal storage, which effectively translates into ~24GB of user available space - T-Mobile GN3 is your best bet. Pay in full, to get it unlocked and put your AT&T sim into it. Then you will have unlocked bootloader, no carrier network lock, no regional lock and it will work with AT&T LTE. You will be able to use international roms as well, as long as they're not for the octa-core version. You will also be able to flash AT&T modem to it, if you wish.
I just got the T-Mobile Note 3 from Negri (unlocked) It is $689 with no tax here in CA

I want to order a Note 3 from Negri to use it with AIO. I would like to have the unlocked bootloader but I'm worry about something I read in another thread here (Note 3 Carrier Selection):
"The main difference between the 1700 band being used by AT&T or TMO device is that AT&T version will use that 1700 for LTE signals where as Tmobile variant will use the 1700 for their HSPA signals."
What if ATT is using 1700 in my area for LTE? I will have the unlocked bootloader and no LTE? Where can I find what frequencies ATT is using in what areas? I made some searches without luck.
Any help will be appreciated.

Some search without luck? You've got to be kidding me! I have personally posted AT&T's LTE frequencies in at least 3 threads in Note 3 forums. It takes about 2 seconds to google a wiki page with LTE frequencies by carrier worldwide...FYI AT&T operates it's LTE network on both bands 4 and 17 in most areas. However, I don't understand why do you think there is a problem with AT&T & T-Mo using the same frequency in a certain area. There are 2 absolutely independent carriers, each with their own towers and your phone will get service from a carrier, based on whatever SIM you put in. What difference do these overlapping frequencies make to you?

I did find information about the frequencies used by each carrier. What I was looking for is what frequency is used in a given area, say near my house. Maybe that is not the right question since I'm new to all this problem.
In another thread (Note 3 Carrier Selection) people is recommending to buy the TMobile version over the ATT version even if you want to use it with ATT (AIO). Because the bootloader in TMo may be unlocked. But then cheols46 posted this:
The main difference between the 1700 band being used by AT&T or TMO device is that AT&T version will use that 1700 for LTE signals where as Tmobile variant will use the 1700 for their HSPA signals.
I have 2 HTC One from each carrier and while AT&T version will pick up LTE at my house with the AT&T sim card in it, while T-mobile version only picks up HSPA+ with the AT&T sim card. It really depends on the tower frequency you use in your area.

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.
That guy is getting only HSPA with AT&T SIM card because his APN for AT&T LTE is not configured correctly on the T-Mo phone. He probably didnt change the APN settings, or maybe T-Mo stock firmware doesnt even have those settings, since the network didnt support LTE when that phone was bought?
If your phone is configured correctly, and you use AT&T SIM you should get LTE service.

Will you advice to buy the sim unlocked TMo version instead of the ATT version, because of the unlocked bootloader and the support for TMo bands (again this is just something I read)? I'm planning to use it with AIO but after spending all that money it will be good to know that I could use it with TMo if I wanted.

If i were you I'd wait a week or two, until other people do it, and you can find enough feedback on how well things work. The question, you should be asking yourself is not a choice between T-Mo vs AT&T version, but T-Mo vs international LTE version with unlocked bootloader, because getting AT&T one with locked bootloader will severely cripple what you can do with your phone. Keep in mind if you have any LTE version with unlocked bootloader you should be able to flash AT&T modem onto it, once it becomes available, regardless of what LTE bands it currently supports.

If someone has more info please post. Thanks

I called customer service there and they said their devices are fully compatible with ATT and that includes LTE - unlocked phones can be bought right now for $799 - a bit more than you will pay if you wait for the official release. The only problem I see is that they don't tell you what model number beyond it being the SM G900 - They don't give the letter after the G900 -- and as we don't know how cross compatible the devices are going to be you run a big risk of buying a phone that won't have much dev support -
That is my take on it anyway - when I called and asked they said you could buy now and they ship immediately.
Good Luck -

So I guess for anyone who doesn't want to wait - they can - but they will have to pay more. And like I said, they don't give the model numbers - might be 900f I really don't know

So does that mean that our only hope for an LTE compatible S5 is the AT&T version? I thought for previous galaxy models people were able to import unlocked models that were compatible with AT&T LTE. Has that changed?

I believe the T-Mobile version can get LTE if Sim unlocked.

Got it. But then it comes with T-Mo bloatware and my goal is to order a model with no carrier bloat. Ideally a Samsung-original LTE compatible version would be perfect but not sure if it exists.
Get the Vodafone one! I read it's compatible with AT&T, has little to no bloat, and can be unlocked from Vodafone's site. I still don't get why Samsung won't just give us an unlocked phone for the US though...

Google Play edition smartphones and tablets are carrier unlocked and unbranded. So, wait for S5 Google edition.

I have no desire to wait for an unknown amount of time until its release though.
Rumor is it'll be on the play store when the phone is released on the 11th.
