Two things I am worried about.... - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

And that is the Knox or what ever it is called, or Verizon doing what they did to the S4. I read that it was an update that made it very hard to unlock and root. I love flashing ROMs and what not. Don't know if I should get the Note 3. I have the Note 2, but will be giving it to my mom if I get the note 3.

It is a big possibility, we'll just have to wait and see once it's available to the masses. As for reasons to not upgrade, check out this post discussing that same subject:

Verizon Note 3

I am not seeing a lot of support for the USA Verizon Wireless Note 3. I realize it is relatively new, but I can't help wonder if the VZW is too tightly locked that it can't be rooted, etc., or if nobody has updated their root instructions yet.
Check out the Verizon note 3 forums. People have root while keeping warranty prefect.

Now that 4.4 is out how long do you think it will be till we get it?

Or do you think we will have to wait for custom roms?

Safe to assume that we would most likely lose the Touchwiz stuff and S-Pen features? Pretty much go stock 4.4?
some of the under-the-hood improvements in 4.4 are pretty interesting/exciting.
but Samsung is gonna take ages.. probably
(I only need the Spen...)

I think the Note 2 people are still waiting for 4.3 ...... So I think we'll have a long wait unless you go custom.
Until Note 5 release, Samsung after sale service is horrible. Don't dream about you will get KitKat within a year.
-Kitkat will be on S5 or Note 4.

Not really fair to be honest. Every Samsung device I've had got at least 1 major update within a few months of its release. It's the the older devices, ie note 2, s3 that will wait ages or not get it. The S4 + Note 3 will get kit kat by January if history repeats. Also in the past Samsung have denied updates to older devices due to hardware limits, Google are claiming kit kat can run happy on 512mb Ram so who knows, maybe old devices might just get a break (pun intended, sorry )

This.
As always, samsung is super slow with updates, so don't bother in at least 6 or 7 months, and even with that, the note line is never the first one, so probably S4 and S5 will get 4.4 2 or 3 months before the note.
Saw someone quote a samsung rep tweet about them being more concerned about getting most of the older devices to 4.3 first. And about note 3 having to wait at least 2 months for 4.4

on other news, HTC pledges to get 4.4 out to its HTC One in 90 days, Google Play Edition, in 15 days...
would be nice if Samsung could make and keep to a similar commitment
This is one thing, coming from iOS which is absolutely mind blowing how Samsung doesn't give a rats ass about being up to date. Why own a Android device that runs old software 1 month after buying it and not be allowed to update it.

i dont think its going to be within a month but i ve had all the notes so far. i717 original galaxy note shipped with gingerbread(2.3)
got updated to ice cream sandwhich 4.0.4( i believe) and than got updated to jellybean 4.1.2
note 2 was ics→4.1→4.3 coming in next month
the updates come but they are slow......But we do have a secret weapon... XDA woot woot!
I wish it was faster but to be honest doesnt really matter to me since im just gong to mess with
They did sell a significantly larger amount of Note 3's in a much shorter period than previous Note devices. So who knows? We had 4.3 well before the flagship S4...
As for the N2 (and S3) still lagging behind, that's because they skipped 4.2.

To quote Engadget :
Update: There's still no official word on why this is the case, but sources close to the company have pointed the finger at a different hardware issue on the Galaxy Nexus: its Texas Instruments-built chipset. The company is out of the mobile business and as such isn't in a great position to give the support necessary for continuing OS upgrades -- presumably some of those 1,700 employees let go in the shift away from mobile could have helped. Now we'll have to see if the community can pick up where the corporations left off or if this is the end of the road for the Gnex and its other OMAP-based kin like last year's Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD and Droid Bionic.
Seeing as we're talking Samsung devices here, I think we should be ok

The note 2 actually came shipped with 4.1 jb.
I don't really know about the fuzz with updates. It's not like apple pushes em out on a monthly basis, only when needed. Same for Samsung, people should stop whining about fast updates, making them work etc takes a lot of time. If they release it early and there are a few bugs people will whine about that.
If the phone works and it does very smoothly here under 4.3 why do you instantly need an update?

Could someone (in theory) create a stock google 4.4 rom for our Note 3?
I know stuff like eye detection and the S-Pen and god knows what else wouldn't work..
AOSP roms won't be out for a while until Samsung gives the community the binary drivers.
Samsung are slow at doing, only in Oct did they release the binaries for S4 6 months after release.
In theory you can download 4.4 and cook your own rom but without drivers from Samsung it won't be stable or certain hardware will not work at all.
If you want the latest and greatest Andriod then you should have brought a Nexus phone.

Thinking but picking this up over note 3

Anyone have a vzw note 3 then pick up a g2?what did you think? How's the reception? I'm getting irritated with dropped data ect.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
I came from a GS3 when they were running the free after instant rebate promo.
The G2 does have a more reliable signal, possibly a little stronger too.
I dont know if it is a big enough reason to switch...it could depend on your location, etc.
It is a fantastic phone though. I dont have the urge to crack flash either with all the UI customization possible witb stock.
Did they patch loki yet? I'm missing aosp and I meant to say I have a note 3. I have a nexus 7 just seems the note and 7 are too close in size. How's battery life?

If you are willing to trade a Note 3 for an LG G2, contact me.
Sent from my LG G2 using xda app-developers app
I did the opposite where I had the G2 and dumped it for a Note 3. If I'm being completely honest, I think the Note 3 is a better overall phone with more advantages. But of course it depends how you will use your phone.
I owned the G2 for a month, so I think I had a pretty decent sample size to give my opinion.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I honestly don't think they are even comparable, because of the size and the S Pen.
Sent from my LG G2 using xda app-developers app
It mostly depends on what you want to do with it. I have the original Note on ATT. I decided on the G2 over the N3 because of all the nonsense Samsung is getting into with not allowing us to flash and customize OUR devices. Since you are on Verizon, the vise is even tighter on you. Seems us GSM guys have it a little easier. Good luck with your decision.
Is this another Note 3 vs G2 comparison thread?
Aren't people getting tired of comparison threads getting locked?

I don't think you are up to date. The Verizon Note 3 has a bootloader exploit, custom recovery and custom roms already. In short, it's good to go.

I wouldn't call safe strap an bootloader exploit as much as a work around. Still no way to allow custom kernels

Will the Rogers variant of Note 4 have S-Finder/Quick Connect buttons?

I am not one to root my phone so and tinker with warranty for the first year. However, having these two buttons as seen on the S5 will be a huge annoyance but one I may have to live with. Does anyone know if the Rogers S5 or Note 4 have this right out of the box, no settings to disable/hide it? TIA!

Does rooting your phone not void your warranty where you are?
I can root a device before I even get it thanks to this forum, losing warranty to root is what keeps me paranoid.

Fooling Carrier

A note is a galaxy.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
What are you trying to say
Im pretty sure he's saying exactly what he wrote.. If youre referring to the Samsung phones, the "Note" youre asking about is actually named, Samsung "Galaxy" Note, Samsung Galaxy Note II, Samsung Galaxy Note III, all the way up to the incredibly designed, safest phone on the planet, Galaxy Note 7, see here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_series
And here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/phones/galaxy-note/
Perhaps the real question is, what are you trying to say??
Just so you understand nobody was saying the note wasnt a galaxy
