Why phone UI? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One thing that always confused me about the series is that it carries over the S's UI. The Note 3 main screen is just like the S4, except everything is bigger. With the big bad screen, at least allow for more rows and columns out of the box . Other apps could also be more optimized. For instance, the phone app can be split into having the dial pad on the bottom and your contact list to the top of it. This way it saves the trouble of switching tabs.

you have the option with multiwindow to put phone app and contact app on top and bottom if you so choose.
I think from what i have seen looks to be just fine.

Yes. But htat involves opening the multi-tasking bar, dragging contacts, then dragging phone. I'm saying it should be a more optimized phone app from the get-go.

can i ask why you need both? you start typing numbers it pulls up peoples names and numbers that match what you have typed not sure why you would need to see contacts as well??

What you are basically asking for is already available in the tablet ui ....samsung should give you the chance to theme the phone more out the box. ..

Yes. Exactly. I don't "need" contacts and phone at once it was just an example. Make the core apps different then regular phones since the Note 3 is by no means a regular phone

This is what the phone apk looks like in the tablet roms .... the thing Samsung should do is allow people to change things like that... especially if the providers want to lock down the bootloader so we can't flash roms

Deep breaths.... ok
There is an abundance of screen real estate that is underutilized. As humans we love options and optimizations. Samsung pours effort into gimmicky features when they could achieve more substantial enhancements if they only applied half of that effort in the right direction. Long story short, the dialer was probably just an example and the OP desires babies.
say what? *snap*

lol, I guess lockdown is to save us users from messing up phone and then blaming Samsung for it + additional costs because we want it under warranty lol

Never though I'd say this..

..but shortly after I flashed CM9 stable, I kinda started to miss touchwiz a lot, so I had to nandroid back to it.
And I am the one who hates touchwiz.. (although, I use Nova as my launcher)
Never thought you would post this
By the way it happens always, aosp Rom doesn't suit all unless they are ready to compromise some features
《tapatalked from galaxy s3》
Never thought I'd see a thread created on this.

I actually like Touchwiz on this phone, seriously. All previous versions annoyed me, but it is smooth and flows well on this phone.
Touchwiz is good and nice, but i think if the backgrounds were white (in the contacts and call log at least) it will be nicer

Can understand you very well.
Have been an aosp freak before (or I'm still, but not at this device), but I'm pretty pleased with touchwiz now. Some ctl and build.prop tweaks and all works fine so far.
Also touchwiz has at the current stage already some small, but useful features build in like the battery percent or the pinch to overview at the appdrawer. Not to forget about the missing mhl support at cm10 which is a dealbreaker for me.
Additional I must confess that I don't like the attitude of team hacksung, even while their work is still much appreciated and they are for sure great developers, it seems to me they aren't doing it anymore because they like to do it, more because they think they have to. For sure it's annoying when noobs clutter the development thread with ridiculous posts, but that you have to expect at a device like the gs3 and the argument that they are doing it for free, yes, it sure makes their work more valuable, but at the same time, they knew it when they started.
My opinion is they or at least every member of their team on his own should focus on one device, maybe that way it would be less load for each developer and at the same time more benefits for the community.
Sry that I cluttered your thread, this I wanted to get of from me sometime ago.

Coming from a galaxy s phone, I remember wanting touch wiz back. The problem with touch wiz as opposed to HTC sense, is you can't retain the framework with a custom Rom. I feel there is more to gain from having a custom Rom than having full blown touch wiz. Look around though, you can probably find a .zip of the launcher here, so you can run a very close emulation of touch wiz on the Rom if your choice. I had a Rom on my captivate called "remics" which had galaxy s3 stock theming throughout the operating system. Just look around, you'll find what you want here on xda

Samsung has come good features but they load it up with crap and its to much. Problem is it seems like an all or nothing situation
Same happenend to me I love touchwiz I flash back. Will go aosp when aokp is back on track .

It's the hidden stuff I love in the new touchwiz, like the native mkv and other formats, stay awake, camera app, t9 dialler, swipe to message/call, reject a call with a message..... and loads more really well thought out features. Touchwiz isn't just the launcher. I use apex and have it looking how I want (stockish), yet retain all the samsung stuff. Why anyone would complain about touchwiz on the S3 is beyond me.

There are some good dialler apps and message apps that have white backgrounds (or customisable) with the t9 dialling aswell. I can't remember the names, but you should have a look if you're interested.
The simple fact that I could not create folders in my app drawer made me flash back

I am running Holo HD but I like touchwiz. Especially the icons, they did an amazing job on the icons. they look so nice now and not preschool like before. So I decided to keep using the touchwiz icons for holo.
Yeah, the thing I love with touchwiz is the message app (stock android'd message app is dead boring), the camera app and a bunch of other stuff.
What kinda is a dealbreaker for me which I can't really decide about is exFAT support. Dumbing down my 64gb microSDXC card kinda feels like a stupid thing to do. exFAT is much faster and allows big chunks to be handled at once (like 16 exabyte chucks instead of 4GB ones)
The whole idea with their Nature UX kinda appeals to me. Soothing alarm and ring tones and beautiful wallpapers. Much better than previous touchwiz's.
i like TouchWiz , tried it on both S2 and S3, i also tried CM9/CM10 on both
I hate the TouchWiz launcher, changing the launcher to something like nova solved my problems.
lol because of this I just reverted back to touchwiz from ADW.

I have it, it is very nice, not too many features yet, and it has a very noticeable lag time. Otherwise it looks great and has good ideas, just not implemented to the top standards yet.

I haven't noticed any lag with it And I agree it looks great and has great ideas, but it's just lacking in features. The way I use my phone tho, the missing features don't bother me.
It's a launcher developed by Chris Lacy. He does good work. I use his twitter app, tweet lanes. It's one of the better twitter clients imho. He's very responsive to user feedback. This launcher is in its infancy so it'll get better

$4 is the going rate. It's the same price as apex and Nova even when they were brand new. It's very nice because it's actually different than the standard android launchers besides obviously the $10-17 ones.

I'm using this one since today on my Xperia Play ( My N4 hasn't arrived yet.. Germany - 'preordered' ****up )
And it runs smoothly even on this old device.
What stopped me from using it is the app drawer in the top left. It'd be a nuisance for me to reach all the way up there every time I needed to access the drawer o_0

Nova and Apex are free, there are paid versions which you can unlock certain features. Completely different to Action Launcher which doesn't offer a free/trial version.
At least with Nova/Apex you can see how it runs on your device over a day or two compared to Action Launcher which you basically have 15 minutes to trial it and if you don't like it you only have 15 minutes to request a refund.

I was concerned about this too - I think you can open the app drawer with the home button, but some apps you want will still be at the top of the list. Infact, if you use the A-Z most will be at the top.
Does anyone know if there is a way around this (e.g, when you press the letter they are offset from the top by a couple of apps)?
I will certainly keep an eye on this, I was quite impressed with the frequent updates for tweetlanes.
The app drawer isn't really on the top left, you can press the home button and it will open, and you can also just swipe right when you are on your "left most" home screen.
I use this on my Nexus 7, and I think its great, good to see something different and not horrifically overpriced!
For me, all it needs is a landscape option, I wouldn't really use landscape on my N4, but I would use it quite a bit on my N7!

[Q] Enable "Offensive" words

I think the "Offensive" word blocking in the swipe gesturing is ridiculous. I've looked around a bit and the consensus is just add the words one by one, however there are a LOT of words and I enjoy many ROMs(PA at the moment), is there a way to make a installable .zip for those of us who enjoy trying many different ROMs?
Your only option is to add them one by one. There's really not that many..

you also have to add the ed ing s etc versions. Then there's the compound "Offensive" words I would like to add as well, I wish Google could just implement a dictionary of their own.
Apparently "sucks" is offensive. Can't add it because it shows up when I type, just not when I swipe.

Fun with your non rooted s3

Here at xda rooting is highly encouraged, but what if you don't want to jump ship enjoy what your s3 can do without voiding your warranty in some cases.
Here is what you can do :
1- Widget locker
This app is one of my personal favourites you can customise your lock screen as much as you like add desktop widgets toggles change the sliders etc etc you get the picture.
2- flip fonts
One of the hidden features of the s3 is the ability to change the font type to anything you want there is a thread on the apps and themes section just for that by bala_gamer
3-Custom launcher
These are great want to look like an iPhone no problem there is a launcher for that windows 8 sense they are all available just do a Google search some of them even support themes customise it to your liking
4-custom keyboards
These are amazing the number of keyboards out there is stunning and they have unlimited variations you can swipe to type tap change the colours and themes
5-live wallpapers
These will make your phone come to life from a Facebook and Twitter feeds to simple clocks that you can interact with they are all available
I hope I helped I will be updating this with more apps and links and pics soon

Prove it.
why spend $500 on a phone and not take full control over it? having bloat is very annoying and running apps that require root is amazing.
sent from where i'm at.
Because some people buy a phone and just want it to work. Rooting takes a lot of time if you actually read all the instructions and precautions
No root then no XDA Developers forum exists .
Instead you have a fix my phone my phone is cooler than your phone forum with few posts .

If it's not available without a new launcher, use Image 2 Wallpaper and make your custom wallpaper fit properly.
