Never though I'd say this.. - Galaxy S III General

..but shortly after I flashed CM9 stable, I kinda started to miss touchwiz a lot, so I had to nandroid back to it.
And I am the one who hates touchwiz.. (although, I use Nova as my launcher)

Never thought you would post this
By the way it happens always, aosp Rom doesn't suit all unless they are ready to compromise some features

I actually like Touchwiz on this phone, seriously. All previous versions annoyed me, but it is smooth and flows well on this phone.

Touchwiz is good and nice, but i think if the backgrounds were white (in the contacts and call log at least) it will be nicer

Can understand you very well.
Have been an aosp freak before (or I'm still, but not at this device), but I'm pretty pleased with touchwiz now. Some ctl and build.prop tweaks and all works fine so far.
Also touchwiz has at the current stage already some small, but useful features build in like the battery percent or the pinch to overview at the appdrawer. Not to forget about the missing mhl support at cm10 which is a dealbreaker for me.
Additional I must confess that I don't like the attitude of team hacksung, even while their work is still much appreciated and they are for sure great developers, it seems to me they aren't doing it anymore because they like to do it, more because they think they have to. For sure it's annoying when noobs clutter the development thread with ridiculous posts, but that you have to expect at a device like the gs3 and the argument that they are doing it for free, yes, it sure makes their work more valuable, but at the same time, they knew it when they started.
My opinion is they or at least every member of their team on his own should focus on one device, maybe that way it would be less load for each developer and at the same time more benefits for the community.
Sry that I cluttered your thread, this I wanted to get of from me sometime ago.

Coming from a galaxy s phone, I remember wanting touch wiz back. The problem with touch wiz as opposed to HTC sense, is you can't retain the framework with a custom Rom. I feel there is more to gain from having a custom Rom than having full blown touch wiz. Look around though, you can probably find a .zip of the launcher here, so you can run a very close emulation of touch wiz on the Rom if your choice. I had a Rom on my captivate called "remics" which had galaxy s3 stock theming throughout the operating system. Just look around, you'll find what you want here on xda

It's the hidden stuff I love in the new touchwiz, like the native mkv and other formats, stay awake, camera app, t9 dialler, swipe to message/call, reject a call with a message..... and loads more really well thought out features. Touchwiz isn't just the launcher. I use apex and have it looking how I want (stockish), yet retain all the samsung stuff. Why anyone would complain about touchwiz on the S3 is beyond me.

There are some good dialler apps and message apps that have white backgrounds (or customisable) with the t9 dialling aswell. I can't remember the names, but you should have a look if you're interested.

The simple fact that I could not create folders in my app drawer made me flash back

I am running Holo HD but I like touchwiz. Especially the icons, they did an amazing job on the icons. they look so nice now and not preschool like before. So I decided to keep using the touchwiz icons for holo.

Yeah, the thing I love with touchwiz is the message app (stock android'd message app is dead boring), the camera app and a bunch of other stuff.
What kinda is a dealbreaker for me which I can't really decide about is exFAT support. Dumbing down my 64gb microSDXC card kinda feels like a stupid thing to do. exFAT is much faster and allows big chunks to be handled at once (like 16 exabyte chucks instead of 4GB ones)
The whole idea with their Nature UX kinda appeals to me. Soothing alarm and ring tones and beautiful wallpapers. Much better than previous touchwiz's.

i like TouchWiz , tried it on both S2 and S3, i also tried CM9/CM10 on both
I hate the TouchWiz launcher, changing the launcher to something like nova solved my problems.

lol because of this I just reverted back to touchwiz from ADW.

Stock Camera for Custom Rom's

Hey All,
Since rooting my SGS2 and installing ICS Roms I find the Camera App is total S**t !
I use the camera loads both still and video.
The stock SGS2 Camera app was awesome !!!!! But the ICS one is rubbish !
I have searched everywhere and stock camera app is not available for custom roms or as an apk file.
So I am trying to find a developer to port the SGS2 Stock Camera App so it will work on all custom roms so we can all use it.
Failing that port it to Root Box Rom by Bajee11 as that's the Rom I use.
If anyone is skilled enough then let me know and we can discuss it further. It has to be totally bug free and working though.
I want this to happen so no time wasters please.
Feel free to leave comments regarding your camera experience on ICS.
Also don't recommend any apps as I wasted money on them all.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Nah I don't think it would be imposable, just a lot of hard work either porting it from GB or starting from scratch. But either way something has to be done cause the ics camera is just crap!
I dont understand your topic. You're talking about a stock camera app. Flash any SAMSUNG based custom or stock ICS Rom and you will have a great camera... If you are using a CM or AOSP based ICS rom, like Rootbox, your camera might be worse. Because you have a Samsung device with Samsung camera, but a not samsung firmware... Or am I thinking wrong here, lolllzzz. Seems like common sense to me...

That's right it is bad but only the cm team can add features to it but no one will port the camera app its not so easy
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I am fully aware that it will be hard but if someone can port the other Samsung apps over then porting this will be possible. It will just take a little hard work and time for someone who has the knowledge about these kind of things (I don't)
Hopefully sooner or later a developer with the skill will answer the call
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
It may not be impossible, but you have to understand that the stock Samsung camera app requires the touchwiz framework and system libraries, these files are completely incompatible with the AOSP framework and libraries, also the libraries in question are closed source when distributed by Samsung so any attempt to port or write from scratch would be a complete shot in the dark and while I'm sure there are devas out there who agree with you, with all the issues Samsung creates for AOSP devs a mostly working camera is much further down the list than other projects.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
This is something I've been looking for since I been using CM as well... 6 months now... really sucks to have such a great firmware with such a bad camera... more importantly the reduced camera settings is what makes matter worse...
For eg if you want to make a video with CM Cramera on lowest resolution, a 1 min video is like 40mb... can't even email something like that... while stock allowed 3gp and VGA resolution cams so you can take random small unimp videos to send... like on whatsapp with a 12mb limit you can only make like 5-10 second videos...

Get UCAM pro. Try it. Seriously great.
The question should be about other third party camera apps available on the play store. Is there any app that comes close to the stock samsung app in the terms discussed above?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
As OP states no point in recommending any PS Apps. I have seriously tried them all and wasted loads of money on inferior camera apps.
There is nothing that comes close to Samsung camera application.
Also I have ucam and it's crap. How you can compare that app to the SGS2 Camera I don't know.
Which is a shame. (
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I agree with op here...the camera of this phone is very good and that's y I hate when it goes to waste on custom ROMs...Samsung ROM is very very ugly but utilizes camera quality to the fullest and has WiFi direct and FM but aosp and aokp ROMs r beautiful but camera sucks and no WiFi direct..spirit FM is the alternative at least
When will the perfect ROM come
Hell I would even buy the ROM like any play store product if it has aosp with Samsung like cam and WiFi direct and FM

Why don't you use stock ROM with custom theme then?
I'm using Neat ROM and you can flash a custom theme over it (Jkay, vertemus, ...)
There's a lite version in case you don't want all stock Samsung apps.
Not what I am trying to achieve here.
Really want it so the camera application can be shared to all who want it.
Thanks for the idea though.

I'm using that too but it has limitations like the theme is close to aosp but not in full...plus some colours r not very good...some notifications r pure white etc such things...plus changing DPI which is possible in aosp and aokp disrupts the UI in Sammy ROM with aosp theme on it

Me too. I love Root Box but stock camera is really good.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
So I just tried ucam and I must say I'm quite impressed by the picture quality... not as good as stock but definitely better than CM...
Problems with it tho are that it keeps trying to autofocus which I find a little annoying...
Secondly and more importantly... its not allowing to take videos in less than 620*480... which was the problem to begin with... I'm starting to think this is a main CM limitation rather than any application...

The stock camera has the advantage that Samsung can make calls directly to the hardware - fast and efficient. Because the stock camera only runs on Samsung devices.
When we talk about AOSP, now we are talking about generic Android. Google rewrote it for all devices with a general framework - it works on HTC. Now, the hardware cannot be directly addressed. Much more complicated programming - simpler in a way, but harder in others.
Then along comes AOKP. Those guys want to take Google out of the deal entirely, so they again rewrite everything and add another layer of abstraction. And when you think that NOBODY on the AOKP team owns an S2 and they don't even list it as a supported device. It is no surprise that the a large percentage of the features of the S2 are no longer available. For the life of me, I can't understand why putting up Superman wallpaper is better than having a decent camera, long battery life, FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.....

Nova and Apex are free, there are paid versions which you can unlock certain features. Completely different to Action Launcher which doesn't offer a free/trial version.
At least with Nova/Apex you can see how it runs on your device over a day or two compared to Action Launcher which you basically have 15 minutes to trial it and if you don't like it you only have 15 minutes to request a refund.

I was concerned about this too - I think you can open the app drawer with the home button, but some apps you want will still be at the top of the list. Infact, if you use the A-Z most will be at the top.
Does anyone know if there is a way around this (e.g, when you press the letter they are offset from the top by a couple of apps)?
I will certainly keep an eye on this, I was quite impressed with the frequent updates for tweetlanes.
The app drawer isn't really on the top left, you can press the home button and it will open, and you can also just swipe right when you are on your "left most" home screen.
I use this on my Nexus 7, and I think its great, good to see something different and not horrifically overpriced!
For me, all it needs is a landscape option, I wouldn't really use landscape on my N4, but I would use it quite a bit on my N7!

Fun with your non rooted s3

Here at xda rooting is highly encouraged, but what if you don't want to jump ship enjoy what your s3 can do without voiding your warranty in some cases.
Here is what you can do :
1- Widget locker
This app is one of my personal favourites you can customise your lock screen as much as you like add desktop widgets toggles change the sliders etc etc you get the picture.
2- flip fonts
One of the hidden features of the s3 is the ability to change the font type to anything you want there is a thread on the apps and themes section just for that by bala_gamer
3-Custom launcher
These are great want to look like an iPhone no problem there is a launcher for that windows 8 sense they are all available just do a Google search some of them even support themes customise it to your liking
4-custom keyboards
These are amazing the number of keyboards out there is stunning and they have unlimited variations you can swipe to type tap change the colours and themes
5-live wallpapers
These will make your phone come to life from a Facebook and Twitter feeds to simple clocks that you can interact with they are all available
I hope I helped I will be updating this with more apps and links and pics soon

change the dpi in hybrid settings.
You don't need to change rom's to completely change the way your phone looks. If you want to change rom's that's great and all, but I'd say that everything cool that you see on mycolorscreen.com can be achieved with the factory rom. You just have to use your imagination and think for yourself.

If you look at the development you can find some Xperia (sony), Touchwiz (samsung), Blur (motorola) and even LG alike UI's themes on roms, just look at them at development thread. If you want something closer to stock I would recommend Asylum rom, its a darker version of CM10.1 with some improvements and daily updates
Try them and find the one you like the most! Then come and tell us your experience!

Again only 4 columns home screen

OMG I was shocked to see the Note 3, just like the Note 2, only has a 4x5 grid on the homescreen. What I don't understand is how Samsung can develop a device with a huge screen, and then totally forget that they can make use of the extra room to place more icons. Even the original Note had 5 columns in the home screen by default (I owned the original Note, the Note 2 and now the Note 3).
I wanted to fix this using something like Assassin tools just like I did when I got my Note 2 a few months ago. Then I read about the Knox warranty void 0x1 on the Note 3. I don't want to void my warranty, although I find it completely rediculous that a user can loose warranty cause he wants to install another (modified) operating system to his device. Suppose Microsoft forbid me to install Linux on my PC!
But okay, we have to deal with it and we probably can't fix this problem (making Samsung change it's strategy) easily. So now it's becoming a challange to solve the wish for a more customizable home screen. How can we do that without root? Yes you could use a custom launcher, but I really like the Touchwiz launcher and it's widgets. Does anybody have ideas how to create a customizable grid on the Touchwiz homescreen to place icons and widgets, without the need to get the phone rooted?
Also: why can't we set the dpi per app? Same goes here, we have such nice devices with big screens, I'd love to have control over the per app dpi in Touchwiz! Is that possible without root? Anybody have a solution for that?
Or do I have to issue a ticket to the Samsung development team and clearify my wishes? And if so, will they listen?
I don't understand how you could be shocked by it, You must of already known this before buying the phone? the Samsung launcher had always been the same just like the xperia launcher etc
As for customising it if you don't want to root your phone right now when it is possible, im afraid you will have to wait it out. Try some other launchers at the moment besides I'm pretty sure most of the widgets work on different launchers

Ok I was not shocked in that kind of way (I love the Note series enough to keep buying each increment), but I can imagine that I'm not the only user with such a big screen who wished there was more room to place icons and use apps optimized for big screens. So the shock is that apparentely I am the only one complaining about this, or Samsung doesn't listen....

Fair enough that's just the Samsung launcher though, it's not the "Note3 launcher" I suggest installing nova launcher or apex and replicating the touchwiz look with themes or icon packs for now, just be patient it was only released a few days a go ^^

to deal with the home screen issue I plan on throwing Nova pro on there shortly after i get mine. This is my first Note so i'll prob hold off for a week or two before i install Nova. I saw somewhere that a few widgets didn't work but the S pen and air command worked fine

OMG I was shocked to see the Note 3, just like the Note 2, only has a 4x5 grid on the homescreen. ....

Mate, you are new on this board. That´s ok - but for the future: Please double check if your concern hasn´t been discussed before (and believe me: in most cases it HAS been discussed).
My thread is just a few days old. -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2457197
EDIT: I just saw that you aren´t that new here - you just have 8 posts in 6 years^^

Mate, I tried searching, but your thread didn't show up. Sorry... And yes, I'm a bad poster, I have a lot of knowledge from reading all threads and keep up with the development, but I'm always afraid to give an advise (we know there were brick risks, now KNOX..). But I really appreciate all the good work, knowledge and skills here. Again sorry!

Ok I'll try Nova (just installed Apex today, because I bought it earlier, but I''l give this one a look, since it seems like Touchwiz is not mod-dable without braking warranty). Thanx!!

Hehe, no problem at all!! To be honest: much more people should open up such a thread, making Samsung realize that it is necessary to work on this.
So: lets keep both (and more) threads (of this kind) up!

Samsung just says "if you want more options, install another launcher. We're not stopping you."
That's the point of Android. Don't like it, change it.
I got rid of the Stock launcher within the first 30 minutes of purchasing my first Android phone (S3.) Haven't left Apex Pro since.

Yeah it works but I can only make shortcuts to apps, not to (for example) browser bookmarks. Also missing the icon labels. But indeed it's a solution and I like the idea. I'll search for better widget and share when found. Thanx!
