At the moment there are pretty much no ROMs available anyways. You can still root the phone. I am sure that Sony will provide a bootloader unlocking solution that doesn't break the camera soon.

Yes, so Sony tells us. Based on my experience with Sony i fear version 4.4 will be out by the time 5.0 already is availalble.

Can't people just be happy that support for this phone has not been dropped (yet), instead of complaining about timescales for release of the promised updates?
I thought people on these forums are a little more in the know than most places and would realise that it's not a fast process to prepare, test and release an update that isn't completely broken/full of bugs.
I guess I was wrong lol.

The developers here do a fantastic job and I have massive respect for everything they do for the modding/Android community. Several devices of mine have had their useful lives extended greatly because of people on XDA.
However, they are not under the same constraints as the devs that work for Sony.
Sony's devs will be under strict developmental, testing and qa constraints and cannot release updates with bugs and rely on people providing bug reports/logcats to fix said bugs after the fact. They have to release software with all features working and with minimal bugs.
Not to mention all the red tape/paperwork they no doubt have to deal with and the other devices that all need maintaining. I would also imagine that the budget for maintaining older devices is dwarfed by the budget for new devices.
It's also worth noting that a lot of the devs good work on XDA is only possible because of blobs/binaries provided by Sony's devs in the first place.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
Sony releases an update with a camera app that takes 4 sec to open and everyone loses sleep over it while some1 here releases an update with wifi issues, screen on delays etc, they get praise for the device bring up which gets labeled as 1st release. lol
Obviously Sony cant depend on rapid development and recoveries and backups and all the fancy stuff we do when we get into issues when it relates to the average android user who by the phone and occasionally plug it in for PC companion to update and that's it. When wifi stops working no one is gonna say " oh this is a first release. They will fix it soon". People take back the devices and swap brands like that. Consumers are a fickle bunch.
Also as I have always said to myself , AOSP is the most barebones and feature lacking kind of experience out there. Android has matured a lot since the froyo gingerbread days and so have the OEM modifications. The reason I decided on the XZ against the N4. I am one willing to sacrifice smoothness for functionality any day. My Z is still stock and I will probably keep it that way til the EOL is reached. I came from the LG O2x which got ICS in December/January so trust me when is say I can wait lol.

You know how much its costing them to pay 1 second-grade developer and 4 trainees so they could have a running upgrade dept? $120 a day! Thats too much for them.

There is nothing teased, it's just the news they put up.
Real question is, who cares?
I have seen no difference with kitkat and 4.2. apart from google now, now on the left. so I am not excited at all. The apptray needs the border removed on the Z, also camera improvements welcome.

Overall Performance seems better on KK. The difference between ART and dalvik is pretty big in some apps aswell. 4.3 brings trim.
The camera however ... Not so sure about that. I doubt they will even update the camera stuff. Why bother spending time and money optimizing an old flagships camera when people can just buy the New flagship with a camera that is advertised to be incredible? That's how a big company works. Time is money. Sad reality.

well .. the screen is better .. more RAM can't be bad .. but i think i'll stick with my Z1 for a while .. at least until the Z3 comes !!

Sony announced that the Z2 will be their flagship for the next 6 months as they prefer 6 month flagship updates
So by september the Z3 should be announced
So if you have a Z1 you should wait for the Z3 and then keep upgrading to the H2 flagship every year and if you have the Original Z then you should upgrade to the Z2 and then wait for the H1 flagship next year

I bought Xperia Neo V(Used for year [Learned basic Android dev])>Xperia Z (Used for 9-10 months [Learned Anything yet i know and can do])>Xperia Z1(1 month ago-present [Improved alot in Dev])
There's nothing difference between Snapdragon 800 and 801 for me, both can play any game at max setting smoothly and camera is also the same (4K recording that's coming soon to Xperia Z1),
I will change my Z1 when i see a very major change like: QuadHD display, Sensors and..... Snapdragon 810

version is 0.0.1 more.
There is absolutely no difference in 4.4.4 (using it in my N4). Infact if you use an AOSP device, it will be hard to find any difference from 4.3 - 4.4.4. APart from minor UI tweaks, there is absolutely nothing for the user to feel any difference at all. I have seen enough of stock devices to know that.
Only thing is that OEMs add many functionalities to make the bare bone android phone decent in use. Otherwise, I have come to the conclusion that Android updates are pointless now. Most of the google apps are anyways updated separately, doesn't matter what version of Android.
The updates ARE significant from a security standpoint.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2366040/android-444-fixes-openssl-connection-hijacking-flaw.html
Most of the time vendors will backport the fixes, so even if 'all we get' is 4.4.3 it very well could include the OpenSSL fix included in 4.4.4.

Another Z2, but only because this hypothetical switch would give me an extra couple of months' warranty. There's nothing out there which remotely compares to this phone other than the Z3, and most of its advantages will likely be in the Z2 soon, too. And personally, I prefer the styling of the Z2 over the Z3.

Pretty much the same as everyone else.
I've only had my Z2 for a few weeks, but as far as I'm concerned, I don't want to swap for another phone, even a Z3.
Like some of the other guys, I prefer the styling of the Z2 and, thanks to Niaboc79's ROM, I have most of the Z3's bells and whistles anyway. HD Audio and a slimmer design just aren't enough of a reason to upgrade to a Z3 and there's nothing else out there that catches my eye.
For me...
If my Z2 was completely irrepairable or stolen & I had to claim for it...
A M8, the M8 was my 1st choice but it wasnt available until after 2 weeks after I had already opted for the Z2.
I owe @niaboc79 the credit for making me not regret getting the Z2...
He has single handedly unleashed the dormant potential of this device.
I only used HTC devices prior to getting the Z2 and HTC custom ROM development is on a level of its own.
We are extremely lucky to have niaboc,

Check out NUT's dual recovery for locked bootloaders, ist a combination of a stock kernel with a custom recovery.

Judging from driver issues(ex: No 5GHz wifi listed on some device, and terrible wifi speed) on both 5.0.2 & 5.1.1, SONY seems to doing copy & paste the rom source from another variable like Z2.
Will there be any differences between SONY's official and ported ROM from Z2? I guess no.
No hating, but I suggest we all turn up the heat with Z1 getting 6.0. I mean look at the Z, it received updates up until 5.1.1, so it doesn't seem logical that the Z1 being a much newer and higher spec phone compared to the Z gets up to 5.1.1 only. We should get the 6.0 update. As for the Z, IMHO it's update until 5.1.1 is already a welcome farewell to the grandfather beast. Because of the Z, Sony has come along way.
Z1 got 4 major updates, more than most other phones, why are you all complaining it is being ditched?

Mostly because the updates where just all a mess except 4.4.4
But my mayor concern is if the Z5 sales fail - Sony will for sure sell their Xperia department this time ...
I was really keen to get a Z5, but considering the awesome specs of the Lumina 950 and 950XL, updates as you are used to get them on Windows I probably give it a try. Continuum is just to good to be true. Would the 950 be Waterresistant, no doubt at all to move...
Some people fighting for latest firmware. And there's people like me who still staying with Kit kat for stability and stuff.

The core of the ROM is mainly from another device such as the Z2, but they're built against specific device configs. It's really not that complicated and it's something that Sony could easily support as it'd be no different to what they've already done with Lollipop.
The Nexus 5 is similar to the Z1 and that'll be receiving Marshmallow. Hell, the Z2 isn't all that different from the Z1 either. The only difficult part to deal with is the camera, but it's not like Sony can't get it done.
People should keep complaining and demanding the 6.0 update for the Z1 and then we might end up with an update, but if people sit quiet and don't even bother to ask about it then we'll be stuck on 5.1.1 unless you want to unlock your bootloader and install ROM's that will never be 100% stable.
