I came from S3 w/ CM 10.2 nightlies to Moto X -- ask questions if needed - Moto X General

Couple observations from a guy coming from a S3 (VZW) running CM 10.2 nightlies (previously ran 10.1 nightlies as well) to the Moto X...
BLUF - I can deal with the lack of customization based on the feeling I have a better device in my hands.
Having grown accustom to tweaks of CM/AOSP I am missing the following...
1. Pressing the clock in the notification bar does not bring up the alarm, it brings up the date/time settings.
2. Quick settings. a.) to bring up the quick settings pane in the notification bar is done with a two finger swipe versus having one side set aside to do that. b.) unable to change any of the settings in the quick settings pane. Currently locked to "user profile, brightness, settings, wifi, network, battery stats, airplane mode, bluetooth toggle, (and if you have an alarm active it appears here too)." Three wide set up.
3. Sound. a.) quiet settings in CM/AOSP are more specific, i.e. I can allow phone calls to ring, through versus Moto X only if the same number calls me twice in five minutes does it ring. b.) I prefer to have more control over notification sounds, i.e. on CM 10.2 I can separate the SMS and phone call volume, keeping SMS on vibrate/silent and calls on vibrate/sound.
4. SMS quick reply from notification panel is not existent ATM on the Moto X. For those who liked the pop up notification on SMS with CM 10.2 it is not there either. No dark theme available yet. (Yes, I am starting to dig at this point, but I am sharing)
Overall software runs smoothly. Obviously nightlies carry their own special risk in use, but 10.2 I feel were pretty rough compared to 10.1.
Using QuickPic you can actually see moving .gif files in SMS - a huge deal for me, not having had that in any CM nightly 10.1/10.2.
If you have any questions about these little things on the Moto X, feel free to ask.

few questions:
1. is it worth the upgrade
2. any lag when playing videos
3. if youre on verizon, do you find the RF to be better or the same
4. are you a heavy one hand user? if yes, do you feel a difference between the two?
thanks

1. My GF had an upgrade available, so I didn't pay full price. For me, on VZW, it's the best phone for me (read near to stock Android). My S3 will be my backup device as soon as a I get my nanosim cradle.
2. I haven't had any lag watching stuff on youtube. There was a weird volume issue that I can't replicate nor could I fix without closing out of youtube.
3. Reception seems better than S3 w/ CM. E.g. better switching between 4G/3G in areas I know 4G doesn't exist. Previously it would take a good 30-60 seconds to make the switch but now almost instant. 4G strength seems better and the ability to pick up wifi seems better (using the word seems a lot, I only monitored S3 from the perspective of "did it work" or "was it strong", didn't get into actual dbs or wifi strength).
4. I am a two-handed texter, so far the same typing mistakes I had on S3 are still there with Moto X. E.g. "thanks" often becomes "th Nks". It feels closer in size to my GNex.
Good questions, thanks.

Hi. I have a couple of important questions (for me):
1- how are the viewing angles?
2-does the display support "true blacks"? If you go into a dark room and view a black background, will the phone looks like it is turned of or will there be a little light from the screen?
3- how is the sound quality and loudness? Both speakers and the phone-calling one
Thanks in advance

1. Good? They seem alright I guess.
2. True black, no light. Pretty cool.
3. Subjectively, the audio, as in playing music from the speakers sounds better than the S3. The call quality not using speakerphone seems a little...I don't want to say worse, just different, than the S3. Speakerphone is fine, personally I don't expect speakerphone from a cell to sound super great.

I came from the exact same scenario (running mastamoons nightly 10.2).
For the phone is about the same amount of fluidness... Maybe the Moto x is slightly more fluid on a regular basis. The signal cannot even be compared. I love in a crappy area for reception and the cm would not switch well and I would often be the only person at a given time with no signal at all.
I bought an HTC one in between and the same applies... Signal is so much stronger.
The Moto x has a lot of gimmicks involved but active notifications are well worth it. And the battery life is always from sleep to sleep.. I always had to charge the s3 in the middle of the day.
This is the best phone I've yet used... Well worth the upgrade, especially when you can sell the s3 for more than the x costs on contract... And that ain't Gunna last forever.
The s3 is a great phone, but it really can't compare.

Wait for dev edition? What are you using now?

I have an s3 with aosp as well. How does the camera compare?

Thanks for this thread, great comparisons. 4 of my last 5 Android were/are Samsung.

Camera is...comparable. Both of them can take some extraordinary photos and some real stinkers. The camera works faster, which is helpful, so I think i'd give it the edge. Plus, I hear word that software updates/camera fixes are en route.

I feel like the camera is quicker AND takes better pictures. I will say I'm not a huge picture taker. I'm heading to California tomorrow for vacation and plan on taking some snaps while I'm out there.

Just for your information, there's a module for Xposed Framework that will hopefully bring some of the CM 10 features into our Moto X. It's a start, but it's already "fixing" some of the things that are off tangent from AOSP; although most are still cosmetic.
Check out the module: MotoXposed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2431768

So the camera is pretty slick on this. I was doing some side-by-side comparisons with an iPhone 5 and I can easily report this camera functions more quickly than the iPhone 5 (don't know if you needed or cared to know this). The little screwdriver motion you can make with your phone to open the camera is pretty awesome too (may be in my top three features of this phone). Overall the picture quality is quite good, no complaints as of yet.

I'm currently running cm10.2 nightlies on my vzw s4 and considering selling/trading for a Moto x. I prefer the size of the x to the 5" screen on the s4

May return my HTC One DevEd

I have been pining over this phone for months. The Anandtech review convinced me this would be my next phone. After having it for a day and a half, I just can't stop hating on it over every little thing though! I think I will end up returning it.
1) Boot-screen. I powered on the phone, and was instantly disappointed. Why was I already in this mind set when I had been dying for the phone to be mine for so long? The issue: A full white screen and a loud start up sound. Why would I want this? What if I am in a movie or a dark restaurant... I have turned off my phone to be polite, but in something comes up and I need to turn it on to shoot a quick text... why would I want it to blind me with full-brightness white and make a long, loud, annoying sound? Yes it is nit-picky, probably the most nit-picky of all of these, and they are all nit-picks, but it just goes to show how no thought is put in to anything (or rather marketing is put in far ahead of real user desires). It has me very depressed over the whole industry.
2) Photo-Upload. So I boot up, sign in, and am told to setup DropBox and have it save my pictures if I want the free 23GB that comes with the phone. I follow all its directions, then go shoot some Zoe's (a)! Within an hour of using the phone, I get a message from the DropBox app saying that phone-battery is too low to upload photos and that 512 photos remain.... WHAT? I come to find out that for each 3-second Zoe I take, it uploads 30 hi-res photos to DropBox, there by using up my storage, wasting my battery/bandwidth, and leaving a huge mess for me to clean up. Google+ Instant-Upload does the same thing. I can understand why this happens, but I cannot understand how HTC included DropBox and requested you to turn on the upload knowing it would do this. WTF!
3) Camera. The one thing I love about this phone is the ability to take a good photo in very low light. It is amazing compared to any other phone I have ever seen. The problem is, I also really loved the idea of Zoe, but you cannot do an HDR Zoe, and without HDR on this phones low-light photos are just as crappy as any other phone with HDR on (better that other phones with HDR off, but crappy is crappy, and only HTC One with HDR is non-crappy, which means Zoe is of no use to me... especially with the DropBox/G+ issue as well).
4) The menu [...] sucks. I thought it would be no big deal... I actually like the on-screen buttons of the Nexus 4 and others, but only a [...] taking up a huge portion of the bottom is so annoying. ExDialer is where it is the most annoying, as the bottom button NEEDS to be [Call], not [...]. I know I can root it and add back the shortcut, but
5) The Dialer. The first Sense 1.0 had the perfect dialer. ExDialer is a perfect clone of that dialer. When I open my dialer, I need to see a scrollable call-history with at least the 3 last calls above the #-pad, and then be able to type numbers or letters into the #-pad to FILTER the list of ordered-call-log above phonebook results. Seeing a single result and a next arrow is lame. Show me a scrollable list, hide the #-pad when I scroll it, with the #-pad visible, show at least the top 3 results (on this huge screen, ExDialer shows 5.5)
6) The Launcher. I'm so glad they put in an option to let me change the drawer from 3x4 to 4x4... not! Zeam Launcher show the dumb [...] on the bottom, so I am now using HoloHD and have my app-drawer configured to 7x8! Icons need to be the size of your finger, as they were on the first iPhone/Android. Now we have these much bigger hi-res screens and the same number of icons across the screen? That makes no "sense"!
7) Call-quality / Volume! During my first 40min call I was told I kept cutting in and out. We did the last 10min on speaker phone which he said sounded way better. I have not heard the same since then, so maybe I am already learning to hold the phone correctly. Being a left-hander doesn't help I'm sure. From my end I heard a lot of poping volume changes until I disabled Beats. Why on earth are the volume buttons on the right? I like to change it with my thumb, and I guess HTC thinks right-handers would too, but every phone I have ever had was opposite. Also I keep enabling speaker with my cheek during calls - probably a left-handed issue with the proximity sensor.
8) Charging. Man it take a long time, not just that, but while using navigation in the car-dock I keep getting a big white error box warning me that the phone is discharging quicker than the battery can be charged. WTF! I know that, most phones do that, no reason to interrupt my navigation with a giant error box and make me click ok to continue driving!!!
9) Build quality. I've seen about 5 of these now, and my DevEdition is the closest to perfect I have seen (smallest gap near power button, jack not too messed up... compared to the other 4), but it is still not as clean and nice to hold and use as my GF's Nexus 4. I have a beard and right now there is one tiny hair that some how got pinched between the glass and white part just above the SIM slot (not the SIM tray at all... where the white meats the glass). I just cut it as tweezers would not pull it out. Far from "seamless-design".
10) Google Wallet? Even on the DevEdition it is not compatible? WTF?
11) Google Voice as voice-mail won't work: "Failed to retrieve and save current forwarding number settings". I can manually change the number for "My Carrier" to my gv number, but I cannot change to "Google Voice". I have seen others post this issue with other phones too. I don't know if it is a long-lasting Sense bug or a GoogleVoice bug or what.
12) GMail (JB issue). I'm coming from Froyo. My old and new phones are both running the latest GMail but they look very different. JB is much improved and better in almost every way, but one thing that has repeatedly annoyed me is that in daylight I cannot distinguish between read/unread mail. On Froyo the grey is much darker and you can tell it from the white. Not possible by my eyes in daylight with JB GMail.
There are many more nit-picks bother me (gets hot, is heavy, no slideout keyboard), but this list are the important ones for me right now.
Sorry man...bu this is the silliest excuses I have ever heard in my whole life....it's your personal opinion and I respect that but it's my opinion too and you have to respect it...
Sent from my HTC Droid DNA
Just wow ..... return it and be happy.
At least #2 and #8 should be MAJOR issues that affect EVERYONE who uses Zoe+InstantUpload and Navigation. They both completely baffle me as HTC included DropBox and TMo included a CarDock. ...do they test these things at all?
Bye

Annoyed by #2 and #4 as well. Any quickfix?
You could simply turn auto upload off. And as far as build quality, this is by far the most well-made phone I've ever used. I had a N4 and, to me at least, the One surpasses it in almost every level (the exception being timely updates.)
I love AOSP, but until Google releases a Nexus of this caliber, I doubt I will leave this device.

Lol. I wish. I'm a Google fan boy only. I've been recommending the HTC One over the S4 for months. I guess my hopes were just too high. I'm more disappointed in flagship smartphones and the industry-direction in general than specifically the One, which is a remarkable phone, but so much is not well thought through, and I expect the S4 to be the same.
That really sucks I feel bad that you cannot enjoy the One.
After being in the wireless industry since the dumbphone era I have to say this is the best mobile phone I have ever used.
I played with the S4 on Sunday and I still prefer the One.
It's amazing that we have so many decent choices now. Good luck with your next device!

Is this a joke? Some of these are silly.
1) Who just turns their phone off when they're out and about in 2013? Really? Plus, if you have it silenced, it won't play a boot sound.
4) Sorry, but if you see the [...] in an app, it's crap. Uninstall it. Find a good app by a dev who knows how to make Android apps.
5) Can't slide left one pane to see a list of call history? Also, when you start typing on the number pad, it filters your contacts. It only shows you the most likely match at first, but if you click the number of matches right below that it minimizes the number pad and shows you the complete list of matches. Works great.
6) When the app drawer is set to 4x5, I can see 24 icons including the icons on the dock. That's about the same as the 25 shown in stock Android on the Nexus 4. And again, anything that shows the [...] sucks. Zeam... facepalm. Try a decent launcher like Nova if you don't like the Sense launcher.
7) Call quality is great for me. Might be your provider. Solavei? What the?
8) Haven't seen the error you're talking about while plugged in and navigating. Did you cheap out on your car charger too?
9) My Nexus 4 creaks like your cheap car charger every time I hold it and always has lint stuck in its cracks. The One is better, end of story. You're the only person I've seen who thinks the Nexus 4 is better built than the One.
10) Google's fault. Not HTC's.
12) All modern Android phones use the same version of GMail. How can you fault HTC for this?
sell it to me..

11) Google Voice as voice-mail won't work: "Failed to retrieve and save current forwarding number settings". Maybe an issue with my new Solavei SIM?
12) GMail (JB issue). I'm coming from Froyo. My old and new phones are both running the latest GMail but they look very different. JB is much improved and better in almost every way, but one thing that has repeatedly annoyed me is that in daylight I cannot distinguish between read/unread mail. On Froyo the grey is much darker and you can tell it from the white. Not possible by my eyes in daylight with JB GMail.
There are many more nit-picks bother me (gets hot, is heavy, no slideout keyboard), but this list are the important ones for me right now.

PM Sent. Dev for Nexus 4 trade, I'll include car dock. You include $$$?
EDIT - please keep to PM... this is not a buy/sell/trade thread.
If you really think the DIALER is ok, please just try using ExDialer or DialerOne (note: I do not recommend either as they have both switched to nag/trial-ware, I am still trying to find a replacment) for a day or two just to experience the difference it makes. To me it is night and day. As I said, the HTC Hero running Sense 1.0 had the perfect dialer (copied from the WinMo5 days)... other apps just copy that. I can't believe Samsung, iOS, Google/LG, and modern HTC don't do the dialer "right" (by my standards yes, but if you TRY it I think most people will agree).
Edit: Just turning off the instant upload sounds great and all, but thats the only way I have been getting pictures off of my phone since the G+ app was released (I prefer that to DropBox, and G+ was first to do it). HTC Zoe has a major drawback that you cannot use that feature properly (and they INCLUDE dropbox and suggest you to enable photo upload on first use!).

Canadian Moto X First Impressions

Hey all,
I managed to get a Canadian Moto X. I noticed there are other dumps from Verizon and AT&T. Would anyone be interested in the Canadian system dump?
I've never done a system dump, but I doubt it's something I can't do. If anyone is interested, and can point me to the right direction; I'd be more than happy to supply the dump.
Tried following this guide:
http://www.ehow.com/how_12211911_system-dump-android.html
But I can't get it to work. Seems I need su/root access. I'll research further, but would be faster if someone can point me to the right direction!
Edit: Photo attached. Cuz someone will eventually say "Pic or it didn't happen".

I am sure people will be interested in it eventually when more people start to get their phones. I'd tell you how to do it myself but I have no idea either lol.

Brief history:
Major iOS nerd. Made my living from iOS dev (didn't sell apps, but worked on projects on the iOS platform). Always have been an Android follower, though. Have all the Nexus devices, but they always end up sitting in the drawer. Owned a few non-Nexus phones, HTC, Commtiva (uggh), Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4.
Quick overview:
• The white is nice, but I can see it getting dirty quick. The surface of the backplate is very smooth to touch. Somewhat slippery (doesn't offer traction whatsoever) despite having a weaved carbon fibre look, I expected it to feel a bit "rough", like unpolished CF.
• Device itself feels magnificent. Has a substantial feel to it, yet it weighs less than the Nexus 4. The device is heavy at the top (speaker top), which I find to be a clever design, it rests on my palm better as it would rest on the middle & index fingers better. That dimple in the middle, feels awesome too. It's the equivalent on dimples on keyboards (F & J keys), it's there to let you know how to hold the phone the right way.
• Speaking of palm, I have a slightly larger than average palm size, and the device feels just right. It's not overly big. Which is one of the primary reasons why I wanted to check out the phone. The 4.7 display feels oddly more fitting, than the Nexus 4, thanks to the much smaller bezel. Less shimmying the device to reach the back button.
• Had a tad bit of problem setting up Touchless Control, because it was so fussy about zero ambience noise. Had to find a dead silent room. Way too fussy.
• Active Notifications, something I can't live without anymore; and it's only been a day! I think this is a very Apple-ish feature; except Motorola beat them to it (or Apple isn't into AMOLED screens).
• Battery life, I don't know. Seems to hold longer charge better than my S4. I intentionally let the phone run without charging it since last night. I wanted to see a real life test. I'm sure the smarter guys/reviewers will be doing a much more through/scientific test than I will be.
• The additional features (Assist, Switcher, Motorola Connect) are quite useful and not gimicky! I didn't read any reviews prior to getting the phone (that's just how I roll) and I was pleasantly surprised to see Assist! If you're unfamiliar, it's a Do Not Disturb app, similar to iOS 6's, with additional features (mute during meetings, driving mode). Implementation is quite the same as iOS 6's.
• The OS feels very AOSP. There's some random customization here and there, but very very bare. I can't find any thing that is not within the Holo guideline. It's super responsive, despite being a dual core CPU. Motorola must've done some major optimization to get 4.2.2 to run like this. It feels faster than the TouchWiz ROM on the S4; probably because Moto X isn't bloated.
• Another nice surprise is to see a "Google" folder on the home screen. All of the Google apps, preloaded. It might be a turn-off for some, but I thought that was a nice addition. I mean, Motorola being a Google company…
• There are a few visual glitches, Navbar being semi transparent and if that's intentional, then it's not "right" because most wallpapers don't fit the 4.7", leaving a good 20 DIP solid black navbar.
• I'm not used to seeing a carrier label on the top left corner. Nexus 4 didn't have this. I much prefer not to see this at all.
• Oddly enough, I have not seen any Rogers' bloat! There is a teensy bit of hope!
Edit:
• My phone says "eh" and "aboot".
thanks for the info! i went to rogers here in ottawa and they had one black one left, but they wouldnt sell it outright to me, so im trying to find one

Active notifications: Do you ever find the "pulsing" to be annoying? For example, if you have the phone face up on your desk, is it annoying to have to wait until the active notification lights up before you can check your messages/know if you have a message at all? I love the concept of active notifications, but I want to be able to not wait for it to come up.
Nav bar: I think that's intentional. No way they would overlook that part. I never liked the transparent nav bar anyways.
Carrier label: I've seen some reviews or videos that didn't have the label on the top left and am disappointed that it's there. I'm sure I would find it annoying as well so hopefully we can find a way to nuke it.
TIP: Maybe you should renamed this thread into the impressions thread? I could see it taking off. Or maybe just copy your post into a fresh thread with an appropriate title? Be a good place to aggregate all the impressions for this strange phone that many people are unsure of buying.

Pulsing: Not at all. It's a good design, IMHO. if the screen is off, then there's nothing to worry about. Look at it from the "no news is good news" perspective. The same design as LED blinks! Since you asked, it's clever (IMHO) that you would have to grab your phone for the screen to display the time. At least I don't have to press the lock screen button to check the time.
Nav Bar If this is intentional, then that's a very strange design decision. My live wallpaper won't fit flushed against the 1280 height.
Carrier Label Yea. I can't wait for a root access! Need to get rid of this bloody thing. Check screenshot. BTW, I unlocked my phone, that's why it's showing as Koodo.

I've always made my LED "always on" instead of pulsing. Guess I'd have to change my habits with the X. And like you said, maybe it's for the better that I don't constantly jump to my phone. As an additional question: if you have an outstanding notification, how often/in what intervals does it pulse? Does it pulse slower as the notification is not checked after a while? If you have no notifications at all, how often does it pulse? (Sorry, just very intrigued by these notifications)
The transparency of the bar is intentional, but I assume the wallpaper isn't isn't and it would actually be odd that they overlooked that part. This isn't an issue for me though as I always hide by nav bar and use LMT.
And yeah, I would definitely need to get rid of that label...ugh. Question, what is up with your homescreen? Can't be a ROM cause it's too early so is it some launcher?

Additional Questions: Let me investigate this further. I need to study the behaviour anyway (I'm a UX guy).
Edit: With 2 different types of notifications, the screen pulses every six seconds-ish. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen the screen pulse/breath without any pending notification.
What is it with my homescreen that you find odd? The lack of icons? I just picked an empty page. I'm running Action Launcher.
Edit: yea, it's an Action Launcher issue, wallpaper not fitting correctly. The native launcher fits the wallpaper flushed! Sorry, Moto! I spoke too soon!

Interesting.
Is it possible to make the AN (active notification) show up by quickly covering the light sensor and then uncovering it? This would simulate taking the phone out of your pocket. I assume it works, but wonder how well. Could be a nice little trick to get the AN to pop.

It seems like a combination of a few sensors. Covering the device doesn't activate AN. However, moving it about will bring up AN. So, gyroscope based?

Ah that's pretty cool. Just shake the phone to show AN. Works too I guess.
I can't stress how COOL the Touchless feature is! I mean, EAT YOUR HEART OUT, SIRI!

You're a horrible reviewer, no cookie for you!
More seriously, thanks for posting about this. I'll throw in some more questions:
- You say the back is smooth, but is it soft-touch or a hard surface?
- How much free space was there before you put Action Launcher on it?
- Some reviews noted that whites have a pink tint to them - is this true for yours?
- How's the speaker phone sound quality?
- Do you connect it up to your work email? If so, does Assist allow you to stop it from synching overnight?

-smooth hard surface. Not rubberized.
- space wise? 10GB
- mine is neutral white. There's a pearl effect.
- I'll test speaker!
- assist doesn't stop syncing. Only suppressing notifications.
Thank god I don't write reviews for a living! I'd be out on the street, not being able to afford the cheapest phone plan here in Canada

Lollipop fiasco.

I want to give some opinions on the latest Lollipop update.
I used the Brazilian soak test (5.0 Motorola Firmware) and I'm currently running GPE 5.0.1
On the bright side, the 5.0 moto firmware ran at the same speed/performance level as 4.4.4 and a bit smoother, so that's good.
Now, the GPE 5.0.1 runs faster than ever on my XT1032, not even one lag afaik, but the most I noted is how the apps launch quickier.
GPE doesn't have Moto Camera and Gallery, so no HDR and slowmo (Not in google camera, not in aosp camera). That's a bummer.
But that doesn't have really to do with Lollipop. Now, the notifications. There's no silent mode (well, there is NONE but goodbye alarms and LED notification!). So there is priority mode.
The apps set their priority themselves, so it's kinda useless. You use priority mode, it still rings for WhatsApp. Even if isn't set as priority, and I tried turning priority on and off on Per-app notification settings.
Worst of all is that on Stock Unrooted 4.4.4 the notification was already somehow crippled. Without a Xposed Module you couldn't set different volumes for ringtone and notification sounds. Most OEMs add that option.
Also, no dropdown on the volume bar that pops up when you press the volume rocker. OEMs usually add that too.
Heads-Up Notifications. Yeah, that's cool not having whole screen pop up a call when you trying to do something. But again, every app set its priority and you get heads up that can't let you see the status bar properly all the time. You get no ticker, I really loved that way to read notifications. Very uninstrusive.
I had sound bugs on some games on 5.0 moto, I don't have them on 5.0.1, however there's an app that launches so slow on 5.0.1 and it doesn't multitask at all (only on that app). As long as you leave it, gets killed.
Didn't happen on 4.4.4.
There's also more other annoyances you know, or even I maybe don't remember right now. But all my expectations for Lollipop got crushed.
Rollback to 4.4.4 is possible, however you get that screen flicker, easily fixable by locking and unlocking the device. However, it appears on reboot again.
I'm honestly waiting for a PERMANENT solution to the flicker and I think I'm going back to 4.4.4 right away.
Anyways it's a shame they f'd up so hard, when the system is all-around fast, responsive, and stable. But VERY unintuitive, and adds/remove features without letting you choose like it's common on Android.
hopefully , he jumps something new mistakes , just step in kitkat arise , but the frustration we generate ourselves for such a yearning for the arrival of 5.0 . in general I do not return to 4.4.4 even taking the gpe 5.0 . anger correcting everything , now they release to the United States and Europe will come firmwere many developments with the new boot and see cyanogenmos with the new boot , so you can not ask for much
sorry for mi bad inglish
The interruptions system is kind of weird,i'll give you that.
I haven't messed around with priority mode,as the only time i turn down my sound is when i go to school in which i have my phone in my pocket so i don't really need the LED.
Aside from that i had compatibility issues with some apps, mainly whatsapp and spotify.
Whatsapp crashes constantly when you're setting it up,but after that its mostly fine.
Spotify just decides to not open sometimes,or open very slowly,or delete you entire downloaded song archive,it's annoying but i can bear it till an update comes i suppose.
One problem i had with the brazil 5.0 was that there was no mobile data quick toggle, when you pressed it on toggles screen it just took you to mobile data settings but that's fixed in 5.0.1 GPE.
Well, aside from the priority mode which imo just needs some tinkering with on google's end, these are very minor and simple problems that can and will be fixed.
I wouldn't call this a "fiasco" not even close, lollipop is so much faster than KK especially when you're multitasking. It just flies.
It seems like you were expecting too much from the whole thing.
Not a fiasco at all, but I agree that the priority mode needs to be improved, there's no way to put it in 'silent but with alarm' if some apps are in the 'priority list'.
Also, I'm waiting for someone to make a Moto Camera zip too. With the apk and the needed libraries it should work.
I miss HDR, and slow-mo is a cool feature.
What u want from lollipop? You thought your phone will evolve MotoX or nexus6 when you install lollipop? Google not offered too much thing about lollipop. Watch presentation of lollipop. Only talked about good battery performance and material design.

It's a simple fix, google will probably take care of it with 5.0.2/5.1 in a few months.
And even until then somebody will definitely make an unofficial fix.
"Fiasco"?
Bit of a storm in a teacup, all these lollipop gripes, hmm? It's barely out of Beta, and everyone's up in arms... wow... I'm certain these fixes will come, but the question is, how patiently will people wait for them?
Lollipop is by far the best release Google has ever done. Holy sour grapes OP. Google gives us Android for free.

Some of these exclusions and inclusions of features are present on the nexus too, so this really is not an issue of hardware but more to the OS. It sucks because lollipop is supposed to have offered better FUNCTIONALITY and FEATURES on its stock offering and now we're here. it kinda sucks in some department (not owing anything to the moto g's hardware)
Blah blah blah. People were going on like this when Kitkat first came out "JELLYBEAN WAS WAY BETTER" "KITKAT SUCKS CUZ IT REMOVED X FEATURE THAT JELLYBEAN HAD AND DOES THINGS DIFFERENT!"
This thread needs to be closed.
Cupcake (1.5) geeks: "Can't WAIT for Donut - HURRY UP GOOGLE!"
Donut (1.6) geeks: "Can't WAIT for Donut - it's gonna be awesome... HURRY UP GOOGLE!"
And so, throughout the years, each impatient nerd with a slightly obsessive bent towards new and shiny, kept, and keeps on, repeating the "I can't wait for X.X release, my phone is looking old and stale and <blah>"
Android 4.0 was (supposedly) going to change the world, the way people waffled on about it and obsessed over it's release. Then it was 4.1... then the "best" version was suddenly decided to be 4.2.2, then they said KitKat was going to be "revolutionary" or other such hyperbole. The same thing happens all over the tech world - people couldn't wait for DVD to come along and render VHS to landfill (we still use VHS in our house, daily), then it was HD-DVD vs BLU-RAY, then BLU-RAY "won", and it was decided that DVDs would never again be "good enough". Next, it was the moronic, gimmicky obsession with everything 3D... then, suddenly, once "The Industry" had "officially" stated that "3D is dead", it was like a switch had been turned off on the backs of consumer's necks (the mass consumption switch)... now it's 4K, and everyone thinks 1080p "isn't good enough" or is "low res", and in a few years 8K will be seen to be "superior"... this cycle of sheer, unconsidered madness isn't likely to end very soon at all.
Unless ALL you do with your smart phones and tablets is tap UI elements all day to see how shiny and fluid they are, it REALLY isn't all that relevant which version you are on, UNLESS you have severe, mission-critical bugs and lack of features which cost you time and money (unlikely, for most of you, if you were brutally honest with yourselves). You wanna know why you're all so "disappointed"? You work yourselves up into a frenzy, and set your expectations unrealistically high, and when the reality doesn't meet your overblown expectations, the internet goes into meltdown and starts ranting... LMAO.
Here's the day I'll cheer Google - when they abandon Java... UGH - what a horror.
It's just another release... it's coming, and yeah - it's great, but come ON - get off your bums and go and do something else apart from obsessing over it - there's SO much more fulfilment to be had from life

try setting it to vibrate then upping the volume by only one click. on some nexus devices it results in the muted state you require, at least worth a try

I appreciate your point about the non-essential features like animations and new design, and believe me. I'm not like that. I'm way more focused on functionality than design. To give you an idea, on my desktop PC i have disabled all the OS animations, because most of the time my pc does things faster than the animation itself on daily light workloads (you know, SSDs..).
And on Android, until now, I've always disable animations or turning them into 0.5x scale, because I felt like they were kinda a waste of time, though pretty, I like the snapiness.
Maybe I was a little tough on Lollipop, but when you can't do something on a new release that you could on a previous release, that's kind of bad.. and I mean basic things like having your phone not interrupting but showing a LED light.
I kinda like the idea of Priority and interruptions on Lollipop, however, if you filter something as not priority, it doesn't use the LED light. How exactly is a led light blinking an interruption?.
Led fix
To enable led notifications, install Notification light widget from Motorola in the play store.
Then put the widget in the home screen, enable it and finally you can uninstall it.
It worked on Kit Kat, but surely will work on lollipop too.

5.1.1 Existence has been leaked, what do we want?

So 5.1.1 was leaked on a Google Dev page today (Source)
What would we want to see in this Lollipop update for the N6 seeming we know nothing about whats coming?
Me personally? A bit better battery life (I think the second .1 indicates new kernel?) and to clean up some of the bugs.

probably nothing beneficial for the N6... looks like it's only going to be for the N7 and N9... much like the 5.0.2 release was never "official" for the N6.
If its truly LMY47S, then it is not really 5.1.1.
That has the same build date code as 5.1.
I want faster responding sensors. Auto dimming, proximity sensor for phone calls sped up. Damn thing takes forever! As does auto rotate.
Want a rocketship for blasting off to Mars! Seems my Nexus6 has about everything else!
I'd like my battery to last over 9000 minutes of screen on time.
Three wishes, and none of them for an iPhone, M9, or S6.
Better battery optimization, improved camera and radio, and ability to switch to a dark Material theme.
Performance improvement for Camera, Dialer and occasional dropped frames in animations.
I would like google to unlock the notification led xD
Faster booting up and more options when shutting down.
Screen resolution options.
That's it for now, only had it for 2 days. Still learning about lollipop, I came from an galaxy s3.
Sexy wallpaper
- Notification lights back by default (non-rooted)
- (Better) hardware encryption for faster boot-up
Fix the carkit a2dp crashing when connected to a Bluetooth low energy device. I should not have to put my moto 360 in airplane mode every time I drive my car...

To you and others in this thread - You're on XDA and many of the feature requests are available in most custom ROMs. "I don't run rooted ROMs" or "I'd like those features to be in stock ROM" will probably be your reply, to which I will say, why are you commenting on a developer / Android customization forum?

Why would Google implement something that is unnecessary and could cause problems? There hasn't been any need to close apps for quite a few iterations of android (actually an understatement)
With all these 'new' versions I find it interesting that N7 seems to be the problem child they can't get right.
I just want WiFi calling

Well it's using a tegra chip. All other nexus are using Qualcomm chips. Minus the 9 which is also late to the party.
The N6 is already a great device. What would make it stand above the rest is for it to be natively as smooth and lag free as the N5 is and to add some minor battery life improvements.

LG G4 No Issues

Hey, everyone!
I, for one, am sitting on the fence with the decision on whether or not to buy the G4. Since there are so many threads talking about the various issues with the G4, I thought that I would ask those of you who don't have any issues. Let's balance the arguments so that more of us can decide on whether we want to buy the phone or not.
So... Who is perfectly happy with their phone and would you recommend it?
Yes i am pretty happy with this phone.. No touch issues for me 10 fingers are registering nicely.but sometimes 2 or 3 times out of 100 knockcodes says wrong but taps are registering i think its my fault that i enter knockcode incorretly.
Right now i m using lg keyboard and no lag at all..
Battery is seems ok to me i m using games skype fb viber intertnet browsing all day and i got 4 hours of screenon time with brightness level 75%.

By far the best phone I've ever purchased. Very happy with all aspects of the phone. I do no notice any missed touches or incorrect knock codes as long as I'm going at a reasonable speed. Everything works wonderfully. The camera is amazing and I am incredibly impressed with the OS. 100% satisfied here!
Me too. Best phone ever. Camera is amazing too

Absolutely zero issues. Perfect screen, touch is responsive, no heating up, no lag, camera takes gorgeous pictures.
I get occasional lag, but for all I know is it's an app (I'm a techie so I'd like to think all of my apps are legitimate but who knows).
No hardware issues, etc.
I voted "Yes" because I have some issues but those are so minor that I don't really care about them too much... It's a really great phone and I highly recommend it...
Great phone
My first post but I wanted to chime in on this thread. I have read this forum a lot since I am interested in root access. I feel like there is a vocal minority that hates the phone, primarily because of lack of root, and wanted to offer perspective from someone who's mostly a regular user.
I mostly love the phone. I previously had a Galaxy S4, and have had this for 3 weeks. There are many little things that make it overall a great piece of hardware.
- No buttons on the side. I can't tell you how much of a design improvement this. Never accidentally press anything, hold it how you want, put it in any clip-type mount, no issues. It takes about a day to get used to using the back controls and then it's joy.
- Phone feels great in your hand. It's the perfect size, shape and weight, and you can switch the on-screen navigation buttons so "back" is where I was used to it on the S4 (the right side). I never really felt comfortable holding the S4. Would often flip it out of my hand while trying to one-handed operate it.
- Beautiful big screen. The slight curve feels perfect in your pocket.
- The default launcher is actually very nice. Some nice little things like you can shove 7 across on the task bar and it will shrink the icons to fit them; good folders implementation; apps/widgets tabs. It's unintrusive and gets most stuff right.
- The IR blaster actually works.
- Mine is Verizon and annoyingly they disabled some features, but the only thing I really cared about I got back with a shortcuts (native phone number blacklist). And access Lock, vital.
- Shortcut to camera with volume-down button, nice. (And of course the camera is stunning)
- Battery life has been fantastic for me. I've gone two days on a single charge with moderate use. I don't keep the screen incredibly bright, though, this is definitely the biggest power sucker.
- No overheating issues. This was infuriating on the S4, I couldn't run Waze on a summer day without it literally shutting itself down half the time.
- And of course the whole reason I got this instead of an S6 in the first place... removable battery and my 128 gig of storage
I haven't had any touchscreen issues. I did install the OTA update which was pushed to my phone the same day I got it. (I hope I don't come to regret this w.r.t. root...)
So while I wish I could root it, the lack of root access isn't actually making my life miserable in any way. The only reason I rooted the S4 it was because of the lack of SD card write access under Kit Kat, and because Verizon pushed an update that actually broke the S4 causing random reboots which was fixable by removing Knox.
The SD card is not an issue with Lollipop. That said, once I had root access on the S4, of course I installed the Xposed Framework and played with stuff, like adding flashlight to my reboot menu (hey, this is already on the pulldown menu built into my G4!). But there is really nothing I couldn't live without.
So I'd love to be able to root this thing, but here's exactly what I am missing without root compared to the S4:
1. Full ad blocking (I can block over wifi with a proxy, so it's just an issue for cellular data)
2. Greenify that has native access to stop apps.
I have since just started using Greenify as my screen-off button and this is satisfactory (though I still see some apps like Skype that like to just resurrect themselves randomly, not much I can do here). The ad thing is not really that big a deal for me. I don't spend a ton of time reading ad-heavy web sites over cellular data, while I've certainly noticed ads a little more than I used to, it's not making me crazy. There's no dealbreaking functional issue such as I had with the S4 that makes me feel like I will cry if I never get root.
So there you have it, very happy LG G4 user.
I remember reading here on XDA a way to have adblock on cellular. I think you need to create a new APN and add a proxy to that APN I tried this on my s6 and it worked.

I did find a description of a method to do this while researching the issue, but I don't think it's possible on this phone. The methods described involved options that were not available. (No proxy config, can't create new cell data profile). I looked for shortcuts that might expose hidden options but couldn't find anything relevant.
Anyone elses g4 mistake a swipe up gesture for a tap when scrolling? Ill be scrolling xda or any other app and i swipe to go farther down and the phone will mistake it for a tap and click on reply or photo or something, pretty annoying but just wondering if anyone elses g4 does this

I have the H815 verison and besides double tap to wake sometimes needing 3-4 taps to wake up, the phone is flawless (as it should be for what I paid for it lol).
I voted no problem, but I have a small issue with double tap to wake.
It seems that occasionally the phone is locked and at the knock screen even when several Smart Unlock conditions are met (location, connected to bluetooth, etc.). If I double tap, it doesn't wake because it's still locked and expecting a knock code. This double tap wakes the phone, but doesn't always turn on the screen. The second double tap usually unlocks the phone, but occasionally it only wakes to the knock code screen. If I pause for a moment, it'll usually Smart Unlock and all is well.
I seem to have less of a problem with this if High Accuracy Location Mode is on. In GPS only mode this was happening all the time. Hopefully there will be an update to prioritize Bluetooth for Smart Unlock.

Using it for a couple days now. Its a great phone. Am patiently waiting for Root then it'd be perfect
Wow. Thanks for the replies, people.
The poll results seem neck-and-neck right now but it's great to know that there are several people with no issues. Software issues can always be fixed so that's an upside.
Interesting how there are people that say they have no issues other than swipes not registering correctly or double tap doesn't work all the time or there is something often lagging....
Those are issues...

It feels like a small software issue.
If you check out the horror stories in this forum, you'll see how people are really giving this phone bad press. Compared to that, a couple of taps not registering for Knock On doesn't seem so bad.
