Canadian Moto X First Impressions - Moto X General

Hey all,
I managed to get a Canadian Moto X. I noticed there are other dumps from Verizon and AT&T. Would anyone be interested in the Canadian system dump?
I've never done a system dump, but I doubt it's something I can't do. If anyone is interested, and can point me to the right direction; I'd be more than happy to supply the dump.
Tried following this guide:
http://www.ehow.com/how_12211911_system-dump-android.html
But I can't get it to work. Seems I need su/root access. I'll research further, but would be faster if someone can point me to the right direction!
Edit: Photo attached. Cuz someone will eventually say "Pic or it didn't happen".

Which store/location did you yet it from?

I am sure people will be interested in it eventually when more people start to get their phones. I'd tell you how to do it myself but I have no idea either lol.

Yeah I agree. Since you are probably the first person in the world to have the phone, you should give us your impressions and such first!

Brief history:
Major iOS nerd. Made my living from iOS dev (didn't sell apps, but worked on projects on the iOS platform). Always have been an Android follower, though. Have all the Nexus devices, but they always end up sitting in the drawer. Owned a few non-Nexus phones, HTC, Commtiva (uggh), Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4.
Quick overview:
• The white is nice, but I can see it getting dirty quick. The surface of the backplate is very smooth to touch. Somewhat slippery (doesn't offer traction whatsoever) despite having a weaved carbon fibre look, I expected it to feel a bit "rough", like unpolished CF.
• Device itself feels magnificent. Has a substantial feel to it, yet it weighs less than the Nexus 4. The device is heavy at the top (speaker top), which I find to be a clever design, it rests on my palm better as it would rest on the middle & index fingers better. That dimple in the middle, feels awesome too. It's the equivalent on dimples on keyboards (F & J keys), it's there to let you know how to hold the phone the right way.
• Speaking of palm, I have a slightly larger than average palm size, and the device feels just right. It's not overly big. Which is one of the primary reasons why I wanted to check out the phone. The 4.7 display feels oddly more fitting, than the Nexus 4, thanks to the much smaller bezel. Less shimmying the device to reach the back button.
• Had a tad bit of problem setting up Touchless Control, because it was so fussy about zero ambience noise. Had to find a dead silent room. Way too fussy.
• Active Notifications, something I can't live without anymore; and it's only been a day! I think this is a very Apple-ish feature; except Motorola beat them to it (or Apple isn't into AMOLED screens).
• Battery life, I don't know. Seems to hold longer charge better than my S4. I intentionally let the phone run without charging it since last night. I wanted to see a real life test. I'm sure the smarter guys/reviewers will be doing a much more through/scientific test than I will be.
• The additional features (Assist, Switcher, Motorola Connect) are quite useful and not gimicky! I didn't read any reviews prior to getting the phone (that's just how I roll) and I was pleasantly surprised to see Assist! If you're unfamiliar, it's a Do Not Disturb app, similar to iOS 6's, with additional features (mute during meetings, driving mode). Implementation is quite the same as iOS 6's.
• The OS feels very AOSP. There's some random customization here and there, but very very bare. I can't find any thing that is not within the Holo guideline. It's super responsive, despite being a dual core CPU. Motorola must've done some major optimization to get 4.2.2 to run like this. It feels faster than the TouchWiz ROM on the S4; probably because Moto X isn't bloated.
• Another nice surprise is to see a "Google" folder on the home screen. All of the Google apps, preloaded. It might be a turn-off for some, but I thought that was a nice addition. I mean, Motorola being a Google company…
• There are a few visual glitches, Navbar being semi transparent and if that's intentional, then it's not "right" because most wallpapers don't fit the 4.7", leaving a good 20 DIP solid black navbar.
• I'm not used to seeing a carrier label on the top left corner. Nexus 4 didn't have this. I much prefer not to see this at all.
• Oddly enough, I have not seen any Rogers' bloat! There is a teensy bit of hope!
Edit:
• My phone says "eh" and "aboot".

thanks for the info! i went to rogers here in ottawa and they had one black one left, but they wouldnt sell it outright to me, so im trying to find one

Active notifications: Do you ever find the "pulsing" to be annoying? For example, if you have the phone face up on your desk, is it annoying to have to wait until the active notification lights up before you can check your messages/know if you have a message at all? I love the concept of active notifications, but I want to be able to not wait for it to come up.
Nav bar: I think that's intentional. No way they would overlook that part. I never liked the transparent nav bar anyways.
Carrier label: I've seen some reviews or videos that didn't have the label on the top left and am disappointed that it's there. I'm sure I would find it annoying as well so hopefully we can find a way to nuke it.
TIP: Maybe you should renamed this thread into the impressions thread? I could see it taking off. Or maybe just copy your post into a fresh thread with an appropriate title? Be a good place to aggregate all the impressions for this strange phone that many people are unsure of buying.

Pulsing: Not at all. It's a good design, IMHO. if the screen is off, then there's nothing to worry about. Look at it from the "no news is good news" perspective. The same design as LED blinks! Since you asked, it's clever (IMHO) that you would have to grab your phone for the screen to display the time. At least I don't have to press the lock screen button to check the time.
Nav Bar If this is intentional, then that's a very strange design decision. My live wallpaper won't fit flushed against the 1280 height.
Carrier Label Yea. I can't wait for a root access! Need to get rid of this bloody thing. Check screenshot. BTW, I unlocked my phone, that's why it's showing as Koodo.

I've always made my LED "always on" instead of pulsing. Guess I'd have to change my habits with the X. And like you said, maybe it's for the better that I don't constantly jump to my phone. As an additional question: if you have an outstanding notification, how often/in what intervals does it pulse? Does it pulse slower as the notification is not checked after a while? If you have no notifications at all, how often does it pulse? (Sorry, just very intrigued by these notifications)
The transparency of the bar is intentional, but I assume the wallpaper isn't isn't and it would actually be odd that they overlooked that part. This isn't an issue for me though as I always hide by nav bar and use LMT.
And yeah, I would definitely need to get rid of that label...ugh. Question, what is up with your homescreen? Can't be a ROM cause it's too early so is it some launcher?

Additional Questions: Let me investigate this further. I need to study the behaviour anyway (I'm a UX guy).
Edit: With 2 different types of notifications, the screen pulses every six seconds-ish. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen the screen pulse/breath without any pending notification.
What is it with my homescreen that you find odd? The lack of icons? I just picked an empty page. I'm running Action Launcher.
Edit: yea, it's an Action Launcher issue, wallpaper not fitting correctly. The native launcher fits the wallpaper flushed! Sorry, Moto! I spoke too soon!

Ah good to know about the wallpaper.
And yeah, I just never seen that launcher before so the widgets looked interesting. Always been a Nova guy.
I'll be awaiting your notification behaviours.

Interesting.
Is it possible to make the AN (active notification) show up by quickly covering the light sensor and then uncovering it? This would simulate taking the phone out of your pocket. I assume it works, but wonder how well. Could be a nice little trick to get the AN to pop.

It seems like a combination of a few sensors. Covering the device doesn't activate AN. However, moving it about will bring up AN. So, gyroscope based?

Ah that's pretty cool. Just shake the phone to show AN. Works too I guess.

I can't stress how COOL the Touchless feature is! I mean, EAT YOUR HEART OUT, SIRI!
Too bad I can't call it something else, other than "OK Google Now". I'd do HELLO MOTO for ****s and giggles.

You're a horrible reviewer, no cookie for you!
More seriously, thanks for posting about this. I'll throw in some more questions:
- You say the back is smooth, but is it soft-touch or a hard surface?
- How much free space was there before you put Action Launcher on it?
- Some reviews noted that whites have a pink tint to them - is this true for yours?
- How's the speaker phone sound quality?
- Do you connect it up to your work email? If so, does Assist allow you to stop it from synching overnight?

-smooth hard surface. Not rubberized.
- space wise? 10GB
- mine is neutral white. There's a pearl effect.
- I'll test speaker!
- assist doesn't stop syncing. Only suppressing notifications.
Thank god I don't write reviews for a living! I'd be out on the street, not being able to afford the cheapest phone plan here in Canada

Yup, this, too, was one of the big surprises for me today when I got mine. I use and love several apps that flash the notification LED different/custom colours, but on the Nex1, the only colour I get is white.
I'm really, really, hoping that OS2.1 just changed the API and that updated apps will be able to do colours. I'm really, really scared that they cheaped out and put a white LED behind the trackball. >.<
][
People are saying that when Bluetooth is paired is flashes blue.
I heard when you have voicemail it flashes red. I haven't tried any of them yet though so I wouldn't know.
its a tri color led so it CAN do any color its just a matter of the third party apps adapting to be able to control it, cant wait
White, red, blue....
Anyone else wish they had green?
Though it was very patriotic of HTC.

all colors can be reproduced... just depends on the software that lights up the ball.
indeed it can be changed
unfortunately it stops working after a notification is fired...
Install NotifyLight from XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575024
then set up the pulselight on and change the values in:
/sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0066/leds/jogball-backlight/color
ie:
Code:
adb shell echo "255 0 0" > /sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0066/leds/jogball-backlight/color
this will give you a nice red jogball.
"255 0 0" is in RGB format.
And off course you need root for this to work...

When white, it is actually the red, green, and blue all on at the same time.
Would love to see an app to configure all sorts of different notification colors for missed calls, texts, emails, etc, and the blink frequency.
Btw.. MissedCall works, but it can't change the colors.
Once the SDK drops for 2.1 and Nexus One codes and such are released, we should have notifications fixed and custom notifications.

I have to say that Google disabled multicolor LED notifications on the Nexus One! (the hardware can do them) #missedCall #NexusOne #fail

Well, it's unlikely that there are 3 led's in there, just one tri-colour.
I've just installed the NotifyLight application and echo'd values to is and it works fine.
People are seriously over reacting, suggesting that this is a deliberate move by google - get a grip, it's probably an oversight. I agree that it's very useful to have but I'm not throwing my toys out of my pram over it.

Every sign including feedback from one of the most popular notification apps Devs points to it not working.
If all of a sudden custom ringtones and contact pictures were removed you'd see the same reaction.
Google already closes off the ability to add codecs or EQ bands.
Considering how many apps took advantage of this I dont see why peoples reactions arent justified. You dont pay 500+ for something to lose functionality.

I'm not saying it's not, not working (without rooting). I'm suggesting that the mechanism (API and underlying implementation) has simply changed and it's an oversight. Looking at the link you provided earlier there was mention that the notification API hasn't changed in a long time.
"The SDK hasn't change in terms of Notifications since SDK version 1."
Perhaps that's the reason it's not working, perhaps the API needs an update rather that being deliberately disabled as that poster went on to say.
"Google just disabled that feature in Android 2.1."
That's simply an unsubstantiated claim by someone on the internet.
People are suggesting that this was a deliberate move by google to close off Android bit by bit. Perhaps waiting until we get some sort of response rather than flying off at the deep end is the best course of action.
2.1 is a new release and the Nexus One is a new device. That's what you paid for. You're an early adopter and really should understand that things might not be perfect in the first instance.
Since you're a senior member of the forum and by implication have been in here for a while and have obviously had more than one android phone, I'm a little surprised and your outrage.

In and of itself youre 100% right.
But in context with every thing that has been coming out in the last week there could be much more to it.
For all I know there could be something N1 isnt capable of long term that these types of notifications may exploit.
Via Twitter and another via Email Ive seen 2 devs of notification apps confirm that the LED lights and patterns cant be manipulated.
Sure it can be an oversight or just some hitch. Perhaps Im giving these devs too much credit. But its the sqeauky hinge that gets the oil. While it may annoy other posters theres simply no better means than to continually raise a ruckus. Im not up in arms saying screw google F the nexus. Just being adamant about displeasure.
The only way any of us can expect a response is by having these conversations.
The 3g/edge issue doesnt seem to effect me but if its there a stink should be raised.
Frankly if a fix came out tomorrow for the rooted community and never by google Id be just as annoyed. I want the OS to move forward not backwards.

May return my HTC One DevEd

I have been pining over this phone for months. The Anandtech review convinced me this would be my next phone. After having it for a day and a half, I just can't stop hating on it over every little thing though! I think I will end up returning it.
1) Boot-screen. I powered on the phone, and was instantly disappointed. Why was I already in this mind set when I had been dying for the phone to be mine for so long? The issue: A full white screen and a loud start up sound. Why would I want this? What if I am in a movie or a dark restaurant... I have turned off my phone to be polite, but in something comes up and I need to turn it on to shoot a quick text... why would I want it to blind me with full-brightness white and make a long, loud, annoying sound? Yes it is nit-picky, probably the most nit-picky of all of these, and they are all nit-picks, but it just goes to show how no thought is put in to anything (or rather marketing is put in far ahead of real user desires). It has me very depressed over the whole industry.
2) Photo-Upload. So I boot up, sign in, and am told to setup DropBox and have it save my pictures if I want the free 23GB that comes with the phone. I follow all its directions, then go shoot some Zoe's (a)! Within an hour of using the phone, I get a message from the DropBox app saying that phone-battery is too low to upload photos and that 512 photos remain.... WHAT? I come to find out that for each 3-second Zoe I take, it uploads 30 hi-res photos to DropBox, there by using up my storage, wasting my battery/bandwidth, and leaving a huge mess for me to clean up. Google+ Instant-Upload does the same thing. I can understand why this happens, but I cannot understand how HTC included DropBox and requested you to turn on the upload knowing it would do this. WTF!
3) Camera. The one thing I love about this phone is the ability to take a good photo in very low light. It is amazing compared to any other phone I have ever seen. The problem is, I also really loved the idea of Zoe, but you cannot do an HDR Zoe, and without HDR on this phones low-light photos are just as crappy as any other phone with HDR on (better that other phones with HDR off, but crappy is crappy, and only HTC One with HDR is non-crappy, which means Zoe is of no use to me... especially with the DropBox/G+ issue as well).
4) The menu [...] sucks. I thought it would be no big deal... I actually like the on-screen buttons of the Nexus 4 and others, but only a [...] taking up a huge portion of the bottom is so annoying. ExDialer is where it is the most annoying, as the bottom button NEEDS to be [Call], not [...]. I know I can root it and add back the shortcut, but
5) The Dialer. The first Sense 1.0 had the perfect dialer. ExDialer is a perfect clone of that dialer. When I open my dialer, I need to see a scrollable call-history with at least the 3 last calls above the #-pad, and then be able to type numbers or letters into the #-pad to FILTER the list of ordered-call-log above phonebook results. Seeing a single result and a next arrow is lame. Show me a scrollable list, hide the #-pad when I scroll it, with the #-pad visible, show at least the top 3 results (on this huge screen, ExDialer shows 5.5)
6) The Launcher. I'm so glad they put in an option to let me change the drawer from 3x4 to 4x4... not! Zeam Launcher show the dumb [...] on the bottom, so I am now using HoloHD and have my app-drawer configured to 7x8! Icons need to be the size of your finger, as they were on the first iPhone/Android. Now we have these much bigger hi-res screens and the same number of icons across the screen? That makes no "sense"!
7) Call-quality / Volume! During my first 40min call I was told I kept cutting in and out. We did the last 10min on speaker phone which he said sounded way better. I have not heard the same since then, so maybe I am already learning to hold the phone correctly. Being a left-hander doesn't help I'm sure. From my end I heard a lot of poping volume changes until I disabled Beats. Why on earth are the volume buttons on the right? I like to change it with my thumb, and I guess HTC thinks right-handers would too, but every phone I have ever had was opposite. Also I keep enabling speaker with my cheek during calls - probably a left-handed issue with the proximity sensor.
8) Charging. Man it take a long time, not just that, but while using navigation in the car-dock I keep getting a big white error box warning me that the phone is discharging quicker than the battery can be charged. WTF! I know that, most phones do that, no reason to interrupt my navigation with a giant error box and make me click ok to continue driving!!!
9) Build quality. I've seen about 5 of these now, and my DevEdition is the closest to perfect I have seen (smallest gap near power button, jack not too messed up... compared to the other 4), but it is still not as clean and nice to hold and use as my GF's Nexus 4. I have a beard and right now there is one tiny hair that some how got pinched between the glass and white part just above the SIM slot (not the SIM tray at all... where the white meats the glass). I just cut it as tweezers would not pull it out. Far from "seamless-design".
10) Google Wallet? Even on the DevEdition it is not compatible? WTF?
11) Google Voice as voice-mail won't work: "Failed to retrieve and save current forwarding number settings". I can manually change the number for "My Carrier" to my gv number, but I cannot change to "Google Voice". I have seen others post this issue with other phones too. I don't know if it is a long-lasting Sense bug or a GoogleVoice bug or what.
12) GMail (JB issue). I'm coming from Froyo. My old and new phones are both running the latest GMail but they look very different. JB is much improved and better in almost every way, but one thing that has repeatedly annoyed me is that in daylight I cannot distinguish between read/unread mail. On Froyo the grey is much darker and you can tell it from the white. Not possible by my eyes in daylight with JB GMail.
There are many more nit-picks bother me (gets hot, is heavy, no slideout keyboard), but this list are the important ones for me right now.
Sorry man...bu this is the silliest excuses I have ever heard in my whole life....it's your personal opinion and I respect that but it's my opinion too and you have to respect it...

Just wow ..... return it and be happy.
At least #2 and #8 should be MAJOR issues that affect EVERYONE who uses Zoe+InstantUpload and Navigation. They both completely baffle me as HTC included DropBox and TMo included a CarDock. ...do they test these things at all?

Everyone is welcome to their own opinion, of course, but a couple things in your post stuck out to me:

That's just...objectively not true at all.
Annoyed by #2 and #4 as well. Any quickfix?
You could simply turn auto upload off. And as far as build quality, this is by far the most well-made phone I've ever used. I had a N4 and, to me at least, the One surpasses it in almost every level (the exception being timely updates.)
I love AOSP, but until Google releases a Nexus of this caliber, I doubt I will leave this device.

Lol. I wish. I'm a Google fan boy only. I've been recommending the HTC One over the S4 for months. I guess my hopes were just too high. I'm more disappointed in flagship smartphones and the industry-direction in general than specifically the One, which is a remarkable phone, but so much is not well thought through, and I expect the S4 to be the same.
That really sucks I feel bad that you cannot enjoy the One.
After being in the wireless industry since the dumbphone era I have to say this is the best mobile phone I have ever used.
I played with the S4 on Sunday and I still prefer the One.
It's amazing that we have so many decent choices now. Good luck with your next device!

Is this a joke? Some of these are silly.
1) Who just turns their phone off when they're out and about in 2013? Really? Plus, if you have it silenced, it won't play a boot sound.
4) Sorry, but if you see the [...] in an app, it's crap. Uninstall it. Find a good app by a dev who knows how to make Android apps.
5) Can't slide left one pane to see a list of call history? Also, when you start typing on the number pad, it filters your contacts. It only shows you the most likely match at first, but if you click the number of matches right below that it minimizes the number pad and shows you the complete list of matches. Works great.
6) When the app drawer is set to 4x5, I can see 24 icons including the icons on the dock. That's about the same as the 25 shown in stock Android on the Nexus 4. And again, anything that shows the [...] sucks. Zeam... facepalm. Try a decent launcher like Nova if you don't like the Sense launcher.
7) Call quality is great for me. Might be your provider. Solavei? What the?
8) Haven't seen the error you're talking about while plugged in and navigating. Did you cheap out on your car charger too?
9) My Nexus 4 creaks like your cheap car charger every time I hold it and always has lint stuck in its cracks. The One is better, end of story. You're the only person I've seen who thinks the Nexus 4 is better built than the One.
10) Google's fault. Not HTC's.
12) All modern Android phones use the same version of GMail. How can you fault HTC for this?

Maybe an issue with my new Solavei SIM?
12) GMail (JB issue). I'm coming from Froyo. My old and new phones are both running the latest GMail but they look very different. JB is much improved and better in almost every way, but one thing that has repeatedly annoyed me is that in daylight I cannot distinguish between read/unread mail. PM Sent. Dev for Nexus 4 trade, I'll include car dock. You include $$$?
EDIT - please keep to PM... this is not a buy/sell/trade thread.
If you really think the DIALER is ok, please just try using ExDialer or DialerOne (note: I do not recommend either as they have both switched to nag/trial-ware, I am still trying to find a replacment) for a day or two just to experience the difference it makes. To me it is night and day. As I said, the HTC Hero running Sense 1.0 had the perfect dialer (copied from the WinMo5 days)... other apps just copy that. I can't believe Samsung, iOS, Google/LG, and modern HTC don't do the dialer "right" (by my standards yes, but if you TRY it I think most people will agree).
Edit: Just turning off the instant upload sounds great and all, but thats the only way I have been getting pictures off of my phone since the G+ app was released (I prefer that to DropBox, and G+ was first to do it). HTC Zoe has a major drawback that you cannot use that feature properly (and they INCLUDE dropbox and suggest you to enable photo upload on first use!).

24 hour first impressions

I've had the Pixel 2 a little over 24 hours now.
Okay. More like 36.
Here are my initial impressions...
Mod edit, removed link
"After my first day, I can say that I love the direction Android is heading in. It’s becoming more customizable by the minute, and with each update, things just keep getting smoother."
You lost me there. Android is less and less customizable after each new version, sadly.
Adding battery percentage ON the battery icon, selecting dark/bright theme, home screen widgets, just to name a few features we had but don't have anymore for whoever knows what reason. Even that damned search bar is always there, there is no option to remove it, even though I used it 0 times, so "customizable search bar" is just marketing BS to make you feel it is customizable...

Valid points, I suppose. But the Pixel 2 will surely have a solid development community, so these things will all still be customizable - it will just require jumping through more hoops than it should.
Nfc issue with clicking is really off-putting and has soured my initial excellent first impression of it. Battery is ridiculously good and I hope the nfc thing is software.

The search bar isn't a feature of "android" though. It's a feature of Google's Pixel launcher, so this isn't a lack of customisation in Android but in this specific app that Google make for their particular phones (not as part of the OS).
If you want rid of it, use a different launcher. It's what I'm doing.

Don't get me started on becoming harder and harder to root the device, losing one of the core concepts of Android then. I just listed a few points that quickly came to my mind. By the way, using another launcher most likely disables the Google Now pane (or how it is called by now...) as far as I know.
Anyways, each their own. I feel it's going the wrong direction in terms of customization.

First it just broke OTA, then came forced SELinux, then this SafetyNet thing first only if modified something, now even if just unlocking bootloader. All their justification was "increased security". Thank you, but I can protect myself.

Wow, Wow, Ohh.....

Hi Guys, I've just bought a 6T....12 Hrs ago.
I love it, it gave me a real Wow switching it on.
There's just 3 things niggling me.
1. One speaker? Really? One Speaker?
2. The Clock and Weather Widgets, I can't get them lined up on the screen, also the trademark Red digit is not incorporated into the clock widget and both the weather and clock widgets show the date....!!! So side by side they not only don't align they repeat the same data and don't match.
3. Can't hide apps....would be nice to hide a load of stock apps I will never use.
Apart from those 3 gripes, the phone is amazing.
I absolutely love it and am very, very glad to be part of the OnePlus community.

Let me tell you what I've learned since I have gotten mine. I'm not sure about the clock and weather widget. But at far as the single speaker, this phone doesn't need 2. This summer l speaker is loud. And you can hide apps by creating a Locker. I'm not sure yet how to do that but you can Google that, that's where I read about it.

Thanks...yeah I hear you about the speaker but when you are watching a movie all the audio is in on one side....I mean come on it's mono and that went out in the 1960's!!!!
My first oneplus aswell ?. Another tip in hiding apps is that you can store them in the hidden section of your stock launcher. You can do that by swiping up to get to your apps and if you gently Swype from the left corner to the right it brings up the hidden section. One the speaker in with you most times than not I tend to cover it by accident while watching YouTube etc

I can have a dark theme on an amoled screen which looks awesome. I think it's brilliant. I've got the international version because I'm UK. Don't use the clock widget, search through your widgets for one called "OnePlus widget"
I completely agree with the OP regarding the feeling when using this phone. I had been a long time htc fan but after TMobile stopped carrying it, I was lost because the os experience was severely lacking from the other manufacturers. I'm on jump on demand and I tried fiddling around with lg and Samsung for a little bit but just want satisfied. Finally made the switch to iPhone and was happy for 2 years with apple, however after apple pulled the stunt of increasing prices for subpar upgrade to the iPhone this year, left a bad taste in my mouth and when I saw TMobile will carry the one plus, I decided to jump and give it a shot. It's been a long time since I had the feeling of having the perfect phone and this is coming from someone who tends to change phones every 3 to 4 months due to the freedom provided by JOD. I will be keeping this until the next upgrade from one plus comes out. Plus I got lucky as one of the reps sim unlocked my phone even though I met none of their criteria for unlock in the spirit of Thanksgiving holiday! So a pleasant bonus and now currently waiting for bootloader unlock code for root. The only reason I want to root is due to completely and utterly blocking ads from everything including apps. That is one thing I miss from apple. A lot less ads on the device compared to Android, however that should be resolved soon. This stock os is perfect otherwise! Amazing battery life, extremely fast charging, and buttery smooth! What else can one ask for!

Yep, that's the weather widget it's great and has the red digit.
But there is no clock with the red digit.
There is however a setting for the red digit clock for the lockscreen...so somewhere in the phone is a red digit clock widget!!!

Yep it's a great phone....very very glad I made the switch from HTC.
Advertisement wise you can use Edge browser with AdBlocker extension. It helps a lot.
I still haven't had one glitch or stall!!!
It's been nothing but super smooth...
Hey look at the widgets I've found...
The red digit is only the 1. Anytime a 1 shows in the temperature or time, it's red.

Where did you find those?

Color OS is fantastic. At ruining this phone.

I don't know where to begin. So I'll just bullet point whatever comes to mind.
I used the Indian version of this device. It's littered with grammatical mistakes. Grammatical f* mistakes. It's like reading the menu off a really cheap multi-cuisine restaurant.
Swiping down turns on a crippled search. I don't search. I don't want a search. But search I must, because there's no way to change that behavior.
Well listen now, if you want to swipe down to get the Notification Center, you must swipe from only the top of the screen.
Umm.. where are the advanced bluetooth controls? My wireless buds are at half their volume.
So you show me a fingerprint icon on the lock screen, but sometimes you don't? What does that even mean? And thanks for animating it using a pseudo-random generator.
So this UI offers an always on clock. That's all you get. And that clock will move around. Because like, that junior dev decided it would be cool and his PO was too busy preparing tag-lines for raising bars.
Say you get a notification and you decide you don't want anymore from that app. No simple hold and toggle to turn off. Nope, swipe left, tap settings button, go into settings menu, figure out which setting you're in, turn off settings.
I use Spotify. I like playback controls in the middle of my Spotify notification window. And whaddya know, there's a way to make that happen in the UI. But it doesn't stick. You change it, and Color OS is like wut.
Ending a call pops open a countdown. A black screen with a f*ing countdown with actions that you may want to do like "save that number". And nope, you can't turn that off either.
If there's ever an example of how lots of small things can completely ruin an experience, it's this. It just makes me sad, and appreciate how good of a device my Poco phone was.
I do really like the fast charging. That's fun to watch.
Glad I have the EU version. Indian version seems bad

That's not an ColourOS thing, because my Huawei Mate 8 with EMUI 8 and Android 7 do the same!

The clock has to move, because of the the burn-in problem of the AMOLED Displays.
The phone is really new. There will be another ROMs and Updates like ColorOS 7. Give the phone a chance or send it back.
Same for me, i am waiting the device from spain to italy but hope in aosp or porting because i know ColorOS sucks
Whilst ColorOS isn't my Favourite, they have made an effort to improving it for the western market. Considering what it was like when I had my Find X to what we have now, id say it has greatly improved (Still not perfect) however i personally wouldn't say now it's ruining this device and with Color0S 7 coming and Realme doing their thing I can honestly see it getting much better.
We all have preferancea and it's obviously not for not for you, that's fine, I don't particularly like Miui, but I wouldn't say it ruins Xiaomi products , it just doesn't suite me.

They don't seem to be the major issues here.
Android one notification bar opens up from very top as well. It doesn't bother me at all
It's just a thing of habit.

To OP: Why not just install Nova and eliminate most of your UI issues?
