1. Root and unlock
2. backup
3. install Google Edition Rom
4. have fun.
You gotta look how to root (google it), there are several ways and it is quite easy.
Then, there's a section here where you can click on your device and pick from the many awesome roms available.

Can a new S4 from ATT carrier be rooted?

Saw a good deal for a new Galaxy S4 for $79 + $70 trade in on my old HTC One. So only $10 for the New S4: )
But reading around people saying the New S4 firmware has a hard lock on it and not easy to root and only one or two roms working on it?
I was gonna root it and put the Google Play Edition ROM on it but some say that's not possible on new S4 from ATT carriers now?

You should do some searching but the s4 with mf3 can be rooted. I know they're not going to have the the new 4.3 update on it yet. But I'd say get the s4 and use the kingo root method.
Use this guide for rooting

Root doesn't mean unlocked. You can be rooted and still have a locked bootloader.did you read before posting? I'm not trying to come off rude.

You will be able to root the AT&T Galaxy S4 easily, almost everyone here in this AT&T S4 forum
already has rooted their phones and have flashed custom roms without any issues.
Good luck!
MF3 can be rooted but you can't flash a custom recovery (TWRP, CWM) If you're asking if you can root the device and flash a custom rom, it all depends on your AT&T store. Try and go to your AT&T store and before they unbox the S4 and start activating everything, make sure you tell them you want a phone with the firmware MDL on it. If they don't have any with the firmware MDL, tough luck. If you get an S4 with MF3, you can only root.
Not only root.
Root it and install Safestrap to install most TW based ROMs that run 4.2.2
Most important is to lube your eyes and
READ/SEARCH all info to do with your build or you will be a victim of the I bricked my phone cause I can't read.you can Google anything to do with your phone and ad "xda" to the search and you will find what you are looking for.

Last two phones I had, the Nexus 4, and Note 2 on ATT, were easy as pie to root and install recovery, and that was it, you were done forever, just flash a ROM + Kernel, reboot and bam you had a fresh new ROM to enjoy, and was so easy and fast to do get it installed, was a no brainer. What happened in the past year with phones being so locked down so hard, where you can't just do that anymore ?
Wish all Android phones were as simple as a Nexus to flash rom's on. But I don't want the Nexus 5 phone with tiny battery, I like bigger batteries or removable, and more storage options, etc...
Yes it can be rooted using the external sd card method. Its actually easy to do.

Thank you. So I can root it no problem, but then it's a matter of very select ROM's available due to my firmware ? And none of them can be 4.3 based ? Which the S4 doesn't even officially have yet, but not even the Google Play Edition ROM that is 4.3 can be installed on this firmware, only the older 4.2.2 version ?
Ok, so I root with using 'Kingo' method
Then install the safestrap .apk, and install that
And then install only a ROM on the provided list, which will all be 4.2.2 based only ? Still rather have any of those, than just stock TW out of the box unrooted
All correct

You can put Google play edition ROMs on but not the 4.3 as stated in the guide. The only real problem for me is that it seems to use more battery than tw roms. And you don't have all the features as your tw based ROMs on the gpe ROMs. Some tw ROMs are just as fast if not faster. Fast speeds and great battery life can't go wrong with that.

You guys recommend a new S4, or the LG G2 ?
Thing is the G2 development is very sparse, and cases and accessories few and little for the G2. And what about resale down the road in a year or 18 months ? Which will fetch better trade in money the S4 or G2 ?
Thanks.

[Q] Syncing Smart Watch with CM S4

Hey Guys,
I've recently rooted and installed Cyanogenmod on my S4, thinking that once I have 4.3 on there, I could now use my Samsung Smart Watch.
I managed to find a Galaxy Gear .apk and installed that. When it runs and tries to connect to the watch, it fails every time. I was going to try and install Samsung Apps, then download Galaxy Gear from there and try again. But the only one I could find was from this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277473
And that APK won't install using APK Installer. (Just says: "X App not installed.")
I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with the S4 and the Samsung Smart Watch. Or knows of a different way to do this. I'd love some help.
Thank you
The Samsung Watch is most likely not going to work with cm since the watch and its software is propriety. You will need to use a stock Rom base 4.3.

I thought I read people were getting it to work once they had a rom with 4.3.
That's a bit disappointing. Thanks though.

[Q] S4 (GT-19505) Root Android 4.4.2

Hi! I am totally a noob in terms of the word "rooting" and I would like to know how to root my S4 (international version; globe [carrier]) it's android 4.4.2. I know that maybe this question is somewhere kn the forum but i am new here in XDA and i would really like to root my phone with a good procedure and at least understandable by a "noob". Thanks for the help!

1. Report your own post, asking for moving it into the Q&A section;
2. What for do you need to root the phone?
3. Do you know that by rooting it (on the current community knowledge level) you will trip the KNOX e-fuse?
4. look here for answers
1. Sorry. I already reported it.
2. Make battery life longer/make my phone work fast. Remove bloatware apps installed in the device. Maybe install custom roms but still learning so i won't brick my device.
3. Yes.

Fair enough. But, i'd recommend you to go to Android Development/Original android Development sections here. You will find plenty of custom, prerooted ROMS, so presumably it would make your life easier just to flash prerooted one.

Will I lose Action Memo or S memo if I root and flash custom rom?

I am considering to root and flash custom rom, I am just thinking if I will lose some pre installed apps like Samsung's Action Memo and S Note. Those two apps are my favorite and I don't want to lose them.
What are other important things should I know before rooting or flashing custom roms. How about my files and datas saved in phone's memory?
Please help. I would really appreciate your response l. Thank you in advance.

Only time you will lose action memo and s memo is when you flash an AOSP rom or a debloated Touchwiz rom
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
So I can still have the Action Memo and S Note as long as I don't flash AOSP and the debloated TW rom?
So I am thinking to go with Cynogenmod. Would that work better?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
CM is AOSP, so it won't have any S Note or Action Memo stuffs. You will have to look for alternatives, but there are none which is as good as S Note or Action Memo.
And debloated TouchWiz means just some cut apps from stock ROM. Mainly those are apps which very few people use, like S Voice, Chat On, Trip Advisor and some Google apps like Books, Games etc., not Action Memo or S Note.
If you want to keep Action Memo or S Note then you will have to use TouchWiz based ROMs only, doesn't matter custom or stock.
I see. So I need to stick with TW to keep Action Memo and S Note, but I can still root my phone right? What I don't want to do is not to flash custom rom. Please confirm. TIA
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes, of course! Rooting has literally nothing to do with those apps, go on, root.
Is there any alternative for Action Memo? Or any note taking apps for me to use my S pen?

You can root and you can install custom roms which are based in samsung stock rom, without losing action memo.
Really!? That is a good news! But I have no idea what samsung stock roms based is.
If you could give me a link of an article or tutorial I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot sir.

Stock ROM means the official ROM, like it came from Samsung. Custom ROMs are those that are modified, have different tweaks and so on, and they are generally not very stable (occasional bugs, lag etc). The more features they have, generally the more laggy they are.
If you want a fluid ROM try Alexander's, it's basically a rooted stock ROM with very few modifications and root access. You will have s note, action memo and everything else you need. You can find the thread on my signature.
Another good ROM I recently tried is audax, it's surprisingly smooth for a custom ROM and it has some interesting features.
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help. I am now excited to root and flash the roms you mentioned. I just still need to learn how to do the root process and flashing roms first. I think I can do my research for tutorials and instructions.

Rooting can't be more easy really.
All you need is Odin on your computer, don't know what's the latest version, search on Google, I use 3.09 and it works fine. Then you need to install a custom recovery, TWRP for example, which you will get from here, https://twrp.me/ Flash it via Odin, I am sure you know you need to put it under AP (PDA) section of Odin. Now you have custom recovery installed.
And then finally you need to download SuperSU zip from here, https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Have that zip package placed on your device, internal, external, doesn't matter, and boot into recovery mode (Vol Up+Power) and find that zip and flash it, done. You are rooted.
Thanks a lot for your help! Yup! I have successfully rooted my note 3.
Could you guys also help me how to install cwm recovery please? Does the file also depends on the model of the phone?
