[Q] Connection icon greyed - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
two days ago my mako started to show grey connection icon for mobile data. The background synchronization also does not work.
After connecting to Wifi both icons go blue, synchro works.
Sometimes after disconnecting from wifi the mobile data icon stays blue and synchro works, but in 99% it greys out
Tried: android 4.2.2, android 4.3, cm 10.1.2-stable, 20130824-nightly cm 10.2, all of them have same problem
Has anybody some advice?
Logcat
Code:
D/ConnectivityService( 551): handleInetConditionHoldEnd: net=0, condition=0, published condition=0 // grey icon
D/ConnectivityService( 551): handleInetConditionHoldEnd: net=1, condition=100, published condition=0 //blueicon
if condition is 0 the icon is grey, when condition is 100 the icon goes blue, and everything is fine
edit:// internet is functional, manual sync too

Yeah, this means your device is having trouble communicating with Google's servers. If you're getting blue bars on wifi, I suspect it has something to do with your carrier or APN settings. Who are you with?

Compare with your APN settings:
Contract
Dial Number : *99#
APN : internet
Username : (leave blank)
Password : (leave blank)
Pay As You Go
Dial Number : *99#
APN : gointernet
Username : (leave blank)
Password : (leave blank)

dialing number not found, but everything seems fine
weird is, that sometimes it stays blue after wifi disconnect
and that manual sync works and internet works

problem solved??
i played yesterday with APNs, changed APN type to "default, supl, hipri, internet", many times did "reset to default" in APN, and finally it started working, i don't know why, i don't know how, but it works

Good to hear
It was probably a carrier-side issue then.

[Q] Data connection issue (O2) on HTC Blackstone

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone have any issues with the HTC THD data connection with O2?
I'm experiencing issues recently where Opera/Weather/Email etc. will all work fine for a couple of minutes but then completely fails to find a connection. I'm on about 1 bar of HSDPA at home but have also tried to disable this in the advanced network settings and work on 3G/GPRS but experience the same issue. The only way to resolve is to terminate the data connection and re-establish or soft reset. I've done a hard reset as well for curiosity sake but no difference.
This has only happened over the last month or so - curious to know if anyone else has this issue or has a solution?

Has any experienced this at all/found a fix? Found a similar thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=456445&highlight=connection but as far as I can tell a solution was never identified.
Issue is really frustrating...!
I used to have this issue.
I used to get the same problem quite a lot and for me (at least) it was the settings in connections that are not set up correctly, and the other problem was that windows live was trying to use push mail with settings that weren't right, disabling the connection frequently.
Are you on PayG or Contract? I'll try to help.
Regards,
Tigermoto
Tiger, thanks for the response.
I'm on contract, connection was done by the auto-connection setup feature after I hard reset. Settings are currently:
Enable HSDPA/HSUPA (i've also tried 'Enable HSDPA' and 'Disable' with no improvement after soft reset).
GPRS - PAP authentication
CSD - 9600 bps (v.32), connection element non-transparent
Network type - Auto
GSM/UMTS band - Auto
I notice the problem most in Opera - I browse for like 30 seconds - 1 minute and then it can't find the page. Only way round it like I mentioned is to soft reset or disable/re-enable the data link in the Comms manager.
I can't think what's changed on my phone - I upgraded the to the latest HTC EU ROM about a year ago but don't remember it being this bad when I first upgraded.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
GW
Sorry about the delay, haven't been on properly for a couple of days.
Autosetup for o2 is woeful, but also it appears you're looking in the wrong place for settings.
Try this out
Start - Settings - Connections - connections.
At this point you can edit your settings for comparison, but i'll go the new route.
Add a new modem connection
Enter O2 GPRS in the top box
Click Cellular Line (3G/GPRS) in the bottom box
Next
Enter mobile.o2.co.uk in the box
Next
Enter Mobileweb in the top box
Enter Password in the middle box
Leave the bottom box empty
Click Finish
Now click Manage Existing connections
Click O2 GPRS to make sure it's active.
Click Okay
Now click Set up my proxy Server
Make sure BOTH checkboxes are active
Leave the box empty and click Advanced
In the secure WAP section type
193.113.200.195
Click Okay
Click okay
Click okay
Click advanced Tab
Ensure both boxes are set to your connection
Click Okay
Soft Reset.
Have a go. This should work. I'll keep my eye on the thread till you're sorted.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Lee
Hi Lee,
Thanks for that.
Those settings were already existing in the connections menu (only difference was 'O2Web' instead of 'Mobile Web'). Interesting you mentioned a proxy address there, I would if thought this would be left blank.
Anyhoo, the issue seems to have improved over the last few days (not sure what's changed tbh!) so going to monitor and see how I get on.
Thanks again,
GW

problem with defy losing dropping 3g connection

hello, i have just bought a defy, and notices it usually drops hspa connection very fast. it takes sometimes up to a minute to load a page, if it works at all, some other times works perfect.
I am on vodafone romania
i entered the info menu *#*#4636#*#* and if i run a ping test when the connection drops, i see an error: http client test: unknown (it's pass if it works) even tough ping ipaddr and host name are both pass, so the internet works in theory, i just can't connect over http sometimes
i update to beta 2.3.4 then downgraded to 2.2.2 and still no change, wiped everything in the process. i checked the apn 100 times and it's the right one (it does work half the time after all)
i rooted and used set dns program (tried all the dns addresses), still no luck
i tried to change baseband, with defy baseband, set them all, same thing
i tried to use the wcdma preferred setting - default is gsm auto (prl) - but it does not stick (only wcdma only and gsm only work)
please help me
get the radio replaced

Try to choose your network manually and enable roaming. I have to do this because my network provider (saunalahti) uses another network (Elisa).
i had some network issues since 2.10, i couldnt search for networks. so i am sticking with 2.09 wich works ok
edit:
oh and also try fresh install, with wipe and all. not just upgrade

[BUG] CM9/CM10 Data connectivity bug - unFIXED, it seems

The connectivity bug appears to be back again since the 2 Nov CM10 update - can others please confirm this?
This bug has been squashed, thanks to a hack by SlugZero, many thanks! The fix has been incorporated in Quarx' builds, from 12.09
Many users have confirmed the data connectivity bug (in CM9 and CM10) and others seems unaffected. The purpose of this thread is to try and characterize the problem, to see if there is a common setting that increases the likelihood of the data disconnects.
Please provide the following information if you are faced with data disconnects (APN info found under System Settings > More…> Mobile Networks > Access Point Names) :
Type of service provider: Normal /Virtual
Cell reception area: Good/Average/Bad
Data type problematic: 2G/3G/HSPDA/All types
Access Point Names - APN: internet/URL
Proxy: IP address/URL/blank
If you have any info to add or think there might be something else causing the problem, please say so in your post.
Hopefully we can use the gathered info to get this bug squashed
EDIT 06-07-12
Here’s what I’ve experienced so far:
1. Having only one APN in your APN list is better, I delete unnecessary APNs.
2. Selecting only 2G or only 3G is better, I leave my phone on 3G and switch to auto when there is no 3G coverage. - Edit 08-03-2013
3. Forcing your phone to work on a specific network is better, if you have the option to roam on another network, that is.
4. Older networks seem more problematic than newer networks (just a hunch).
5. Some sim cards can be problematic, I recently bought a new sim card and it improved my connectivity 10 fold, but I still have the odd disconnect if I disobey the rules above.
The dropout seems to be caused by an incorrect handover from cell tower to cell tower, or network to network, or one network type to another, so by limiting these changeovers, you limit the chance of dropouts. My connectivity is pretty much “perfect” now, although it would be great to leave everything on auto without concern. If you want to do that, you could install Connection Checker, by Jeremy Chase. This app toggles Airplane mode if it detects a data disconnect. I don’t use it anymore though.
I’m on FuZZ_’s 30 June CM9+ build at the moment.
OK, I'll get the ball rolling:
Type of service provider: Virtual
Cell reception area: Average
Data type problematic: All types

I hope we can get something to solve this issue..

I think there are two levels of this problem... for virtual networks all data types are problematic, for regular networks like yours, 2G only is stable. I'm hoping to gather enough info to prove this.
I don't think all custom roms are affected, I have no problems with WIUI when Auto APN switching is turned off (a feature that doesn't exist in CM7 and CM9)
Type of service provider: Normal

I have to switch off and switch on wifi and cell data every 5 minutes to get it work. It just stops working. If I download any kind of data it freezes after by 3 MB.

cell data doesn't wokr just on CM9-NIGHTLY-120529-Defy+.zip

Please try the following:
Go to your Access Point Names and open the active APN
then click on menu and save the APN
Let us know if this helps (it has made a significant difference for me)
All non-active APNs should be deleted by hitting menu, delete APN
This will probably have to be repeated after every reboot (if it helps)

I'm using Tasker to reset the "mobile network", if I reset "APN" or "mobile data" it doesn't work.
The free Market app Connectivity Checker by Jeremy Chase helps hugely to restore connectivity when it drops out by toggling airplane mode for a split second. If you're on the phone when it checks it skips the check, so no chance of cutting off the call.

Reading about, i've find that Condition=100 means GOOD and Condition=0 Means BAD... dunno if that's it but looks like based on the behavior of my data connection... Altought i'm sure that in this period the network condition didn't change that much, signal is stable, i'm seated in my desk so that's no kind variation to justify this drops...

Thanks for putting it in the order, incase you remember discussing the problem, with me.. i still have it .. the disconnections after the phone is idle for some time and dont knw what to do with it.. a friend of mine suggested that it might because of deep sleep.
here are the details for my phone.

btw... i downloaded the "Connectivition Checker" app yesterday .. and i think it works for me till now.. no disconnection yet .. so i am happy .. yet i feel this isnt how this shud be .. i shudnt hv to use an app to make my internet work properly..
I installed the latest Euroskank+ build about 3 hours ago and no data dropouts yet...
I think this build has incorporated the fix Epsylon3 mentioned earlier.
For those with a grean lens, there is also a new build from Epsylon here.
Edit: trouble-free data connection lasted 4 hours, trying Epsy's build now.
As previously mentioned, I think there are two levels of this problem, and one of them has been fixed... the other still plagues me. Better than nothing!
Edit 2: I'm still having data issues with today's Epsy3 build... how sad

I too confirm data connectivity (EDGE) issues with CM9 builds by Quarx and Euroskank Defy+ builds on my MB526. It especially happens while commuting (in train, to be specific). The icon shows that it's connected, but the icon is greyed and there is no connectivity if I try to access a webpage via browser or use any app that required internet. Whenever I'm at the same place for hours, there are no issues at all (previously I had issue in this scenario too, which got fixed after i flashed stock baseband files). I've set the network at 'GSM only'. It happened even after I flashed stock baseband files.
I'm now back to CM7 due to the same.

Interesting observation here on today's Epsylon build....
Connectivity Checker kept restarting data even though it appeared to be connected. I've now disabled checking and no permanent drop outs yet. Previously if data stopped it would never reconnect without help. Now it appears to reconnect again.
Let's see if it lasts

[Q] No Mobile Data with NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.4-CM9-HWA-SD V2.2 & 2.3

With NexusHD2 2.3 (and 2.2) mobile data does not work.
On v2.0 this works fine. But not with v2.3.
I tried to replace the initrd.gz (/kernel/boot/) with the one from the v2.0 zip. But that didn't solve anything.
Anyone have this problem too? And what is the solution?
PS: My account requires me to switch roaming on to use mobile data.
i regularly have problems with either data or mms on new roms, until i delete some of the default APN's.
Im on o2 uk, and i get EIGHT different o2 default apn's, some for p a y g and some for post paid, plus some that try to combine data and mms settings intop one apn but dont work, plus there are two other networks that piggyback off o2, so i get those settings available as defaults too, , and until i delete all but two of the 02 ones, (one data one mms) data or mms (usually mms, sometimes data) doesn't work.
Probably not that, but i just wanted to rant about it, having had to do it just a few minutes ago, hehe.
never have this problem
Nope, that is not the issue here. The APN's list is empty.
This is about fresh/clean/new installs on NexusHD2.
So after a new Wipe (task29).
If I install NexusHD2 v2.0, then first thing I do after initial setup, is go to "System Settings >> More ... >> Mobile Networks" and switch on "Data roaming".
The signal status bar icon changes to show the little 'R'.
After that, I go to the browser and try to load a page... all working fine.
Exactly the same steps on a clean NexusHD2 v2.3 setup and it doesn't connect.
No little 'R' in the signal status bar icon.
It only sometimes shows 2 bars, and as soon as I want to connect online (via browser), bars are empty.
Same issue on NexusHD2 v2.2.
PS: I am using the normal NexusHD2-ICS-CM9 package, not the SD version. Downloaded from https://sites.google.com/site/nexushd2android/
PPS: I am using MAGLDR 1.13
I had the same issues for MMS on default settings. Tried many different setups, but without changes. Go SMS PRO solved my problem, but I’m not sure which settings were changed exactly.
I don't see how that has anything to do with my issue.

odd, should only get a 'G', 'E' ('3g' on a few roms) or 'H'
Thanks, that seemed to be the problem. I manually created the VPN and now it works.
Still seems like a problem that in v2.0 the VPN is automatically recognized and created, but NOT on v2.1 and higher.
PS: The R in the signal stands for Roaming.
ahhhh roaming, of course, d'oh,
i hava a simular problem with the 2.2 rom.
when wifi and data connection are turned on and the phone is connected to wifi the internet works. but when i leave home and need a data connection (3G, 2G) he can't get the connection (connection bars are grey). the problem only occurs when wifi has been turned on since booth or when the wifi and data are turned off on boot and after(couple hours) a while the data connection is toggled.
if i go to settings for mobile network>mobile providers and reselect my provider the connections works again for a while.
does anyone know what the problem could be?
