Nexus 4 Stock Android 4.3 Screen battery drain - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody, i bought my Nexus 4 2 days ago. Well, it comes with android 4.2.2, then i updated to android 4.3
But i have a problem, the screen leaves 43%-50% of the battery.
The minimum is 43% of screen battery usage. And the bright is at the middle, its not the maximum.
Can someone help me? If i use 3g/wifi or play a game the battery finish in just 12 hours...
Just wifi + standby sometimes 15 hours..
Thanks to all.

That's fairly normal. Screen will be the highest unless you make a lot of voice calls or listen to a lot of music.

No, its not normal.. I was charging my phone and now i removed the charger (full charged) and the screen was with 81% battery usage but after 2 minutes it down to 51%-55% at the time im writing this answer its 55%
In 10 minutes just with wifi on is 96% now.
Thats so bad.

My advice
Rooted Stock.

hmm its 62%, well, i think its not normal, well lets wait google make a new update..
Now i restarted my phone and the screen battery usage is 7% lol.. this is crazy.

Just disable the: Settings > Location Access > Wi-Fi & Mobile Network Location.

Disabled now. Lets see how it will work.

Remember that disabling that setting means you practically have zero location services working. you're relying on GPS only, so apps like Google Now, weather widgets, etc. will not work.
The analogy I like to use is to solve a leaking pipe issue by shutting off the water main. Sure the leak is stopped, but you're not going to be able to shower or wash your hands. So in the end your water bill is $0 not because you stopped the leak, but because you also stopped doing other things.
I don't doubt you'll stop the battery drain, but we never really fixed the leak. I guess only Google can do that.
Edit: What I also noticed is that if you've already booted up and you disable the location services via Mobile Data/Wifi, then you end up getting 100% wakelocks. I can upload the screenshots after I get off work, but I tried several times resetting CPU Spy and BBS stats and it was 100% wake.
Once again in the water main example, if you turn off the water main while you shower, the water left in your pipes will continue to flow. It's not the same as turning off your shower which cuts off that water to you immediately. What probably happens is you're revoking location services permissions by unchecking the box, but apps like Google Now, Weather Widgets, etc. will continue trying to request for location. Since you've given the apps permission to use location services, it will try, but since there are no location services GPS, it will just continue to wakelock.
A reboot does solve it where I think the app will stop requesting for location services.

I think The main problem is not the location settings
I disabled it and my battery its like enabled.
It drain 5%-10% in 30 minutes or less with just WiFi on.
This is really bad..

I don't think you quite understand what it's displaying.
The battery history shows the percentage used of the battery consumed. So if your battery level states 75% and the screen states 60%, that means out of the power consumed your screen used 60% of it.
In a typical day the bigger percentage your screen uses the better. That means you aren't suffering from wake locks or other battery draining activities.

Yes, but i think the battery is going a little faster than normal.
If im mistaken sorry.

Solved nexus 4 android 4.3 battery drain
:good: You have to disable in Google Now > Settings > Voice > Hotword detection.
This feature turn on the mic all time and try recognize your voice to do a action.
Just disable that, and the battery will take a good life duration

I made this.
But im having yet the battery drain. I wake up and i take off the charge, it was 100% after 15 minutes with wifi and facebook, whatsapp on the battery drain 5% (95%)
After 7 hours (now) with much use (playing modern combat 4 15 minutes, real boxing 5 mins, dead trigger 5 mins) with 3g always on, the battery is now 41% (now i turned off 3g) is this normal??
Or my battery is really going faster than normal?
Edit: I started to play real boxing for 10 minutes again, the battery was 40% after playing 30%. Wifi and 3g off.

How exactly do you update it to 4.3? Mine's still on 4.2 and I check Software Update in the phone and theres no upate.

Well it was on the software update..

[Q] Battery drain issue

Hi,
I got my second android phone (LG G2 obviously) this christmas, and I haven't had time to properly use it (I don't have a micro SIM yet). I noticed that my battery is going empty pretty fast, although I heard this phone has a amazing battery. My friend got this phone too and he told he's been on one charge for about 36 hours with constant wi-fi connection, app downloading, playing games etc. so I figured something's off. I charged the device before going to bed and when I woke up (10 hrs later) battery was on 85% (only 2 MINUTES of screen time!!!!) and I had no apps running on the backround, no nothing. So now I'm thinking is there some easy fix for this or should I return it and get a replacement? Also something weird I noticed yesterday was that even though I don't have a SIM card yet, but 16% of the battery was used by the phone application. I did some screenshots of battery usage today and yesterday too if anyone's interested.
There are literally dozens of similar threads... suggest you start searching.
And I literally have gone through 90% of them so I decided to start a new thead. Do you (or someone) think that a factory reset could help? And the next question might sound stupid, but if I do a factory reset then does the warranty remain? Better safe than sorry I guess
I just played 4 minuts of hill climb racing and lost 3% of my battery, this is not normal. Does anyone even have a solution for this? All I see on other threads is questions and questions, but I don't see anyone saying "That worked and my battery life is normal now"
It's normal if screen is bright. Especially if carrier bloat is still there. Post screens, all you have, and what carrier. The phone could have been sick in a search state.
I don't think my phone is tied to any carrier, it was bought from just a regular electronics shop, but frankly I did a facory reset and didn't realize that all my screenshots will be gone too. Do you really think it's normal that 10 hrs of idling causes 15% battery loss? And it has the stock LG apps (safety care, life square, cell broadcast etc.). What do you mean by "The phone could have been sick in a search state."? My screen brightness is on 70%.
It's normal with bloat in it. They all have bloat stock. 70 is high and can eat at the battery pretty good. I mean it could have software glitched and was struck searching for activation behind the scenes. Use Wake Lock Detector and see what is keeping it awake.
This, almost 20% drop was caused by downloading 3 apps (facebook, facebook messenger and twitter), updating ~10 apps (all done via wi-fi) and rearranging my home screen.
Steamer86, are you sure? My friend told me that he has been 36 hrs on one charge without changing any settings and just downloading apps, playing games and testing the phone.
Your idle is great at that point in time. Facebook is a battery killer. That's a lot of activity with 70% brightness all the time. It's 17% and medium higher side usage and an hour+ of screen time. What are you expecting? At this rate with 70% constant screen and Wi-Fi pushing pretty good you would get almost 6 hours OST. That isn't bad bud.

I hope you are right, but for helping and giving advice I'm going to hit that 'thanks' button
This night i lost 18% of my battery and my phone was almost all the time on deep sleep.
But i did notice something weird, battery usage shows that Android OS is using up most of my battery and when I press on it and then hit the back button then the Android OS changes to something called surfaceflinger for a millisecond (check the screenshots)

Can you try putting your phone in airplane mode and then turn on Wi-Fi? If you aren't using a cell carrier than there's no need to keep that on.
See how this works in increasing battery life for you.

How much battery life are you guys getting on your Tab Pro 8.4? I bought mine couple of days back and I felt it's disappointing.

What bugged me was the disappointing battery life when the screen was turned off (not completely powered off of course). Even in airplane mode it would die in a day or two just sitting around. Battery stats showed Android System and OS were killing the battery. I never figured out if there was a setting or something to fix it.
Instead I loaded Cyanogenmod 11 on it a week ago and now it uses only 3% of the battery a day when I'm not using it. I don't miss any of the Samsung extras.

Something must be keeping it awake. My tab has excellent standby battery life.
Doesnt lose more than 5% in a day. I do have the setting to turn wifi off when in sleep mode though (unless plugged in)
Battery life on the whole varies. Video watching through the stock video player drops about 10% an hour. Surfing would depend on your browsing habits. Gaming drains close to 20% an hour. Pretty standard. That along with the excellent stand by time means I get about 2 days of use on a charge.
Every day at work telephony, internet, email, IMO 24hours, 24hours Bluethooth Gear 2 connect. Dinner consists of my tablet battery 55%. For me life is great. My tablet root and frozen Samsung Apps (Bloatware) ... XDA .... Try the Nova launcher from the Play Store to Improve speed. Set it as your default launcher then Disable / Turn Off;
Flipboard, MagazineWidget, S Voice, Samsung Apps, Samsung Apps Widget, SapaMonitor, Screen Saver, World Clock, and (Hancom, Office for Android Share, Hcell, Hshow, Hword, Updater, Viewer Launcher, and Widget) if you do not plan on using it.
We will be adding Quadrant test 24,000 points on the original ROM.
Play google baterry doctor.
Battery life is good its an app thats draining the battery.

Yes it was using as much battery as watching a movie with the screen on. Something was terribly wrong with it. I think this behavior started after a software update I got from Samsung.
I turned everything off including Wifi and it was still eating the battery while sitting there with the screen off. I have never seen that with any Android device I've ever owned.
But I'm happy with Cyanogenmod. Battery life is outstanding now.
My battery life was mediocre, and then I put cyanogenmod on, and it went to dreadful. With the tablet at 100% and OFF, untouched, it would be 20% down in 10 hours. In contrast, my iPad loses maybe 3% in that time, doing the same thing - tracking email.
I ran a wakelock tracker and noticed that Exchange Services has it awake about half the time. The total time. Like in 10 hours Exchange had it awake (with screen off) more than five hours. Effen ay. Something is seriously screwed up with how Cyanogenmod's Exchange talks to the two Exchange services I use. Switching from Push to "5 minutes" has helped significantly; Exchange is still the worst culprit, but now only by a factor of four rather than a few hundred.
Ideally what I'd like is the new Exchange apks modified to prevent admin and fixed to be less wakelock intensive.

Cyanogenmod has their own version of Exchange?
Our Exchange servers at work are ridiculously slow and unreliable. They can take two minutes to return your mail which is a major drain on your battery if it's set to check it every five minutes and you get a lot of mail. Sometimes they'll just stop responding and leave you hanging. The IT people just tell you to keep trying and you'll get your mail eventually.

Dunno.. 7-8 hrs I guess. Screen on time really doesnt mean much without any context.
I can get 12hrs+ watching videos on 20% brightness. I can kill it in 4 hrs playing games at 100%.
Like I said, the standby is excellent. Drains less than 10% in 2 days. So for me, I have about 90% to use over 2 days.. and from my experience,
video drains less than 10%/hr
gaming ~20%
reading books drains less than video.
General surfing, mails, social networking uses between 10-15% depending on how you are using it.
My brightness is usually around 40%. Goes up rarely when I'm using it bright conditions. Goes lower when I'm reading late at night
Should give you an indication of what you can expect from the battery depending on your usage..
Mine drains about 10% per hour while constantly using the device for light tasks, such as reading, web surfing, and watching some YT videos here and there. That increases to about 15%/hour when I watch movies. So after watching a 2 hour movie, I expect to see about 70-75% of battery left. Now if I'm listening to music for an hour at the gym with the screen turned off, it only drains about 3%.
At first, I thought that was pretty mediocre and felt disappointed. But I've taken my tablet with me on many trips and never had it die (usually just close to 20%). I rarely ever use my external battery pack. I know this will vary depending on how long the trip is and how much you're using it, but I'm just saying that it meets my needs despite having a lower battery life compared to some other tablets. I do all I can to extend it, but I don't have to constantly watch it.
Last night I charged the tab 100% and with Wifi off (sync for 1 min every hour. )
Today the battery is at 71% - On battery 13hours - 44 mins
27% Android OS
24% Google services
13% Android System
8% Onscreen time - 20 mins
Should I flash CM to fix this?

CM won't fix that. Install Better Battery Stats or Wakelock Detector to nail down the precise problem. If you're using them, it could be Exchange Services or Google Drive (yeah, that turkey wakelocked me to oblivion!), at which point you at least know what to attack.
You can find BB on XDA here and WakeLock Detector on XDA here, both are also in the Play Store.

Google search with 23 mins of wake time and Gmail with 6 mins.
Currently Deep sleep is 14 hr 26 mins. Total time is 17h 5m. Awake is 2h 39m. Screen on time - 27mins.
I added the google now widget a couple of weeks back and that caused some wakelocks and overnight battery drain. Removed it and didn't have the problem.
The battery life is pretty good for me. Was out a lot, so had wifi off for large parts.. watched videos (from device), read some books, played some Asphalt (not much.. around 30 mins) and some browsing/mails..
Got 11 hrs screen on over 2.5 days and still have 15% left.
Yeah was indoors so the brightness was never over a third (~30%) and reading books really doesnt drain much battery(especially if its at night and you turn the brightness further down)..
I'm not saying people will get 10+hrs screen on with their device and usage constantly.. 8hrs would be realistic.. but the point is, the battery is a lot better than I had originally expected.

I have this same problem - except my GTP is 100% stock, unrooted. I can go into Settings/Battery to see that Exchange Services is chewing my battery. It will die in less than 24 hours, even if I don't use it - as long as it has a WiFi connection. I think if I turn off WiFi, it will stop attempting to sync and the battery will last "normally". I don't know for sure, though, as I haven't tried. I'm not interested in a tablet with no network connection or even without my email.
I'm going to cut a VERY long story short (at least, here) and say that I have spent several hours logging the ActiveSync traffic between my tab and my server, poring over the logs, and I have identified the problem. It's one particular item that is failing to sync, which causes the tablet to retry the sync every 1 second. The sync failure causes the server to log an internal server exception every time - despite the ActiveSync requests from the tablet being correct. I also found a Microsoft KB article that appears to address this exact problem, and MS has a hotfix available for it.
I have talked to Tech Support at my hosted Exchange provider and they have confirmed with their operations staff that my server does not have the MS patch that is referenced in the KB article installed. Unfortunately, they are giving me a bit of the runaround on installing it. I only have one mailbox hosted with them, so I have no pull. They sound like Verizon. "We have to thoroughly test this update in our lab before we can install it on your server." And "nobody else has reported this problem and we can't put too much time into a problem that only one user is experiencing."
So, I am now just waiting for them to install it on my Exchange server and see if it really does fix the problem for me. If it does, I will be posting about it on XDA and the AC forums, as a Google search showed me that a lot of people, with a lot of different Android devices, have this same problem and nobody seems to know what's really going on or how to fix it. I will try to remember to post back in the GTP General subforum specifically, too, so stay tuned.
My battery life seems to be getting better as the battery gets some more charges on it.
Sounds basic / silly, but i simply put mine in battery saver mode and that made a big difference with little effect on performance

Standby Battery Life is awful! N910C

As the title says, standby battery is awful.
I have all the bloatware disabled, only things on push are gmail and facebook messenger.
Cell standby is also sitting at 20% battery usage, no matter what, 2nd on the list behind screen time. Note 3 had exactly the same issue where cell standby is concerned. None of my other phones have had this issue, including my S2 with buggy as hell CM11, OnePlus One, Moto G LTE, etc.
No matter what I do, even with everything disabled and on airplane mode, there's a constant 1% battery drain every hour.
In my Note 3's case, this only happened on stock samsung firmware. When I flashed CM11, the issue went away completely. Something like 0.3% drained per hour instead.
So to me the issue is with Samsung's crappy software. I know the battery life was woeful on the Note 4 anyway before an update came in to fix things up a bit. Maybe they're saving the fixes for 5.0?
I know a new update for the N910C was released a couple of days ago too, but not available on European models yet.
Anyone else having these issues?
I dont have this issue at all my friend if i were u id try a complete wipe 1st, some people have had this issue too so returning could be an answer
Same here...
I only lost 4% battery overnight and don't have this problem too
20% battery loss on standby but mobile data was enabled.
^ you may have a bad app and/or bad signal
I have 4 bars lte at home, 2-3 bars at work, wifi always full signal at both work and home, one is ac 5ghz, other n 2.4ghz, no difference in drain either way.
Ive done a factory wipe 3 times now, even through recovery once. No change. Better battery stats and gsam both report no rogue apps, and ive also tested by having no apps installed, with and without bloatware disabled.
Im not really keen on the idea of voiding my warranty to test other kernels etc, and the only other option is to flash the ank5 update to test.
Ive attached another screenshot showijg the issue better. The drain gets noticeably worse after the first 50% or so, but that could be caused by many things, like inaccurate readings.
Like i say though, 1 of my 2 note 3s had the same issue. Could well be a faulty wifi/cellular chip.
Ignore the time its been on, the same thing happens during a day of heavy usage when in standby, same level of drain constantly.
1%+ may not seem that much to a lot of people, but with my usage i should get through 2 days regardless. It should be less than half of what it is. From the curent reporting in the battery stats, im losing almost 50% of my battery in standby over a day and a half or so.

The only things enabled for sync right now are the basic google apps such as chrome, calendar etc. They rarely sync though, and no other phone I've used in the last 2 years has had an issue with them.
Samsung sync constantly returns errors so I leave that off.
Last thing I'll be trying tonight is a full wipe without disabling any built in apps. Its doubtful, but maybe one of the core shamsung apps are trying to communicate with a disabled app or something. I really don't know.

My n910c is terrible too. 15% battery loss in 3 hours of standby alone! Wtf! Tried every battery saving trick' no location on etc...
i would suggest u do few thing while u get on bed next time,
Full charge your phone and unplug before you on bed,
1. Restart the phone while on charging, after restart go to home screen and lock the screen and unplug then go to sleep, check it at the next morning u wake.
2.Left the phone with your daily apps running, full charge and unplug then go to sleep, check it at the next morning too when u wake.
this is how i solve those apps running not right.
like the screenshot below,
An apps running at night drained 30% battery within 6hours & 30mins & without switch on the screen or touch anything since i'm asleep *with wifi on*
2nd screen shot shown that cm browser running and consume 94% of processing among 30% battery
while cpu only running 20mins since i had weather & sync on during night.
After that i report to cm team and they send me latest version,
after re-install my phone just back to normal.
now my N910c note 4 is consuming 1% every 1.5hours standby with wifi/3g connected *my area 4g only 1~2 bar so i changed to 3G*
average daily usage were 4.5~5.5 hours screen on time with social apps, browsing infomation, checking e-mail every 1or2 hours, reading news with flipboard, news app, drawing something, watch some youtube video & with auto brightness but indoor most of the time.
hope this would help you

I did a full wipe, installed ANK5 update, unplugged at 10pm at 100%, woke up at 7am with 97%. This is what it should ALWAYS be.
However, after the 2nd charge after the full wipe, it's back to what it was, if not worse. Last night I unplugged at 11pm, woke up at 7am with 92% left. That's bang on 1% an hour again.
There is nothing keeping the device awake at all. It's very frustrating.
I can only assume Cell Standby is so high due to the fact that the phone isn't actually doing anything while the screen is off. After a 20hr day with only 1 hour SoT it's sitting at 72% battery left, with cell standby at 31%, just above Device Idle at 29%. It's a mystery to say the least.

Thanks for your post. I'll definitely try restarting etc again beforehand. I'm also considering another wipe, as S-Voice being disabled seems to cause quite a few errors in the camera app. The battery drain increased after I opened the camera app too, even after force closing etc. That could just be coincidence though.
1% every 1.5 hours still seems like a lot to me, but it seems like you have a lot more apps and things running, so it's actually very good!
Very tempted to just root the thing now and throw on a debloated OS and custom kernel.
Last night i go sleep with 10% of battery left, ( im not force closing any application at all - just exit ) when i wake up ( about 7 hours of sleeping ) phone was showing 8%
No data/wifi/gps etc. If you are not using mobile internet, switch to GSM! It takes more than 30% less battery power than 3G
I'm thinking this is a hardware fault of some sort. Maybe battery, I'm gonna replace and see cause tried from full charge placing it in airplane mode to see if signal was causing the problem, didn't touch it, screen off whole time for 2 hours. Upon looking at it I saw I'd lost 7% battery! Omg! In airplane mode?! In 2 hours?! In standby?!!
In normal use there are no Rouge apps or strange readings in battery stats at all. May be hardware fault.
I've had the N910K exynos, 6 hours plus sot battery life
I've had the N910F snapdragon, 6 hours plus sot battery life
This n910c give me 3 hours sot. I'm pissed lol. Right off!!
Thats really weird, it can be issue of the battery. My 910C has about 8/9 hours of SOT ( wifi only ).

Your mobile signal is very poor. I believe you have full bars but your screenshot ... well it shows us that your reception is poor. It may be one of the causes for your fast drain...

Yes, in airplane mode I should lose practically nothing withing 2 hours. Please screen shot your battery stats for us!

My SoT is fine if im only using it during 1 day. Its usually close to 6 hours. But its not heavy usage, just browsing mainly.
Let me know how the battery change goes. Im likely going to order a spare anyway for when im away from home, so will also report back.

So mobile data completely disabled? Not that it should matter much if youre on wifi all the time.

At work its pretty poor, usually a bar or two on lte, but no other phone ive had has displayed battery drain like this in standby.
That still doesnt explain why it drains 1%/hr with nothing happening at home though with 4 bar lte and full wifi signal.
Ive also noticed voice calls are taking up significant battery. A 3min call used more battery than 20 mons of screen time at half brightness apparently, unless thats normal.
If its normal, then to me the cause seems to be battery related. If not, then faulty cellular chip.
Also heres some more screenshots.
This is over the course of the day with barely any usage.
The chunks where its awake, that's just when I'm playing music, not a rogue app.
Note the big standby drop at the start, then the standby drop later, both completely different amounts of drainage, yet both when doing nothing.

Verizon S7 Edge Battery Life Terrible

And there's nothing I can do about it. I only have a gear s2 connected at all times and wifi and mobile data off whenever possible. Before I leave to the gym battery is at 44%. After the car ride there it drops one percent. I unlock the phone, connect my powerbeats, and open youtube and there go another 5%. After a YouTube video there is 7% drain. About a 10 minute video too. Leaving the gym and hour later and I see a maybe 20% battery loss. I don't know how people with regular S7s get 4-5 hours SOT because I get only 3.5 maximum. I bought the edge looking for better battery life but it's practically no different than my S5. If anyone knows a magic trick to this, I need to know now because this is extremely annoying.
IF you got the device from an official retailer, just return and get a new replacement. Losing 7% watching a 10' video is not right even with max brightness. You can fix the standby drain by using Forcedoze (which helped reduce my standby drain by 50% to about 1% every 2 hours). 3.5 hours SOT is terrible even with max brightness. Just get a replacement please. It's not worth the time and frustration.
IF you don't have the option of getting a replacement. Forcedoze can help with the standby drain. Factory reset, set up normally (personally, I just turn off bluetooth NFC location and turn them on when needed), and hope that your terrible screen on time is software related.

Do you think it might be my location by any chance? Maybe the service in my area causes this drain. I also have gps on because of my gear s2 but I can turn that off and see what happens. GSAM tells me the in the past 30 minutes the drain rate is 15% per hour. I browsed the Internet a bit and have been using it the whole time. I'll try to also do a full battery drain test on geekbench with full brightness and see what it tells me.

It's a good possibility. I have a fairly weak signal where I am most of the day and only get about 4-5 hours of SOT. I have all radios off except WiFi and data when needed. Still with my usage I only charge every 2 to 3 days. I don't get the drain like you do from watching youtube though.
My battery life also sucks. I barely use my phone during the day and it almost dead when I go to sleep. Most of the day I am connected to wifi between my work or home. My old htc m8 one could last 40 hours. I think part of the problem is because I do not have root on this phone. I kind of regret switching because I cannot get root. I cannot use applications to adjust cpu or control my wifi, data and to turn off apps from starting automatically. I think tonight I am going to try and calibrate my battery.
I had horrible battery life after taking the 2 OTAs. BetterBatteryStats would not report the device going into deep sleep at all and I was losing about 10% per hour on standby. I did a Factory Data Reset and all the problems cleared away. BBS is reporting deep sleep after about 5 minutes of the display going dark. I have Wifi, data, Bluetooth, and high-accuracy Location services turned on at all times. I lose about 2.5% per hour now with AOD turned on on standby.
Guess my advice would be to due a FDR after every OTA....
Guys, I had terrible battery life when I first got the phone. Off the charger at 6am, under 20% by 5pm... Follow my steps below and I bet your battery will do a 180 and be very nice. Mine gets me 35-40+ hours on a charge.
Disable the bloat apps you don't want in app manager.
Turn off Google usage and diagnostics reporting for the Google app, and if you use the Google keyboard, there too. This and the next one were the biggest improvements by far.
Turn off Samsung "Send Security Reports," and in the same place, turn off auto-update Samsung security updates.
Turn off device/Bluetooth/WiFi scanning.
Set keep WiFi on during sleep to while charging.
In permissions, I turned off location for any app I didn't think needed it. I went from 30+ to about 15. If an app requires location to work, you will get a popup warning when disabling location for it.
Lastly, I did a Restrict Background Data on several apps I didn't think needed it.
My phone started dozing and the battery drain dropped way out.
I keep AOD and Bluetooth on at all times and connected to my smartwatch all day, and my car about an hours a day.
Hope this helps! Apparently out of the box the S7/Edge battery life is terrible...

I installed forcedoze and did the adb non-root command and now my phone's battery is holding up better. I think the phone was just sleeping.
It's ridiculous one has to do all this to get closer to acceptable battery life.
Google and SEC should be ashamed of themselves!
It's not just VZW devices either. AT&T are just as bad.
I've given up on trying to get acceptable standby drain and just let the device live on a wireless charger.

You need to turn off all radios when you go to sleep for the device to enter deep sleep. I had the same problem and when I started turning off wifi and mobile data for the night GSAM reported deep sleep and I was only losing 3% per night.

Phone Idle under Settings/Battery

What runs under "Phone Idle" on the V20. It's been the largest battery consumer for the last week of use that I've noticed. My wife's V20 is the same and I had my brother check his and his wife's V20.
I'm only asking because I'm not see great battery life like other have been reporting. I don't have live wallpaper, have only two widgets on the home screen. GPS is set to battery save, screen is set to auto but that doesn't even come close to chewing up the battery.
Sadly I feel like I'm still using my old 2.5 year G3 where it'll need a charge mid way through the day.

Really??
Pretty sad that needs to be done on a week old phone with minimal apps. I'm not even a heavy user.
I feel like I'm back on my old DroidX days where everything was a factory reset but never helped...

I agree with you. Although my phone is just beyond a week old and does have all my apps installed, a factory reset can't be the solution here. This is the typical "I don't know how to fix this" answer always given by manufacturers and carriers.

In the roughly 3 weeks I've had my V20 I've only seen this once where phone idle was higher than Screen. I started looking thru all running apps for 'keep awake' time being high and noticed Android OS had keep awake of over 2 hours when it's normally less than an hour after a full day use. I power cycled the phone and it stopped.
The weird thing was Android OS didn't show high battery usage even though something was triggering keep awake. Looks like the keep awake was causing phone idle to be high.
I'd look at everything in your battery usage to see if you have any high keep awake times.

Sorry did not mean to be short in my response. When you set up your phone did you restore it from another phone using the nfc bump thing? I did the same and my phone battery was the same way. Wouldn't last even half a day. After i factory reset and set everything up manually i get 18+ hrs with 7 hrs screen on time sometimes.
If this situation doesn't apply to you then maybe a reset won't help. But you have to understand your situation isn't normal.
Make sure Google now features are all turned off and not running in the background.

I'll have to go through the apps one by one like I did previously on my G3 and see. Now within the battery stats there is only a handful of apps like hangout, play music, chrome and camera. The rest is OS related so that's why I was curious what ran under Phone Idle.

No and sadly I was looking for that feature a week ago but couldn't find it so I had to individually install most of my apps I had on my previous phone...made for a long night along with the additional emails and configuration or icons and such.
I'll keep digging away at the phone...I really want to like this phone ?
Has there been a definitive resolution to "phone idle" battery drain? I just got a V20 2 weeks ago on sale for $360 and its a fantastic upgrade over the One+1 I've been rockin all these years, but I'm also suffering from mediocre life due to whatever phone idle is. Some forums (for other phones) say phone idle is related to your wireless signal. I'm still with the same carrier and frequenting the same locations and had no such battery drain with that old One+.
i finally discovered whats was goin on with me..
i had the same issue..
phone idle was topping my battery usage list
it turns google plays have this "locationmanager service " and locationwhatever" that kills your battery over wifi even with location button off
Go to locations/ 3 dots in top right corner/ turn off WiFi scan. See if that helps.
My phone has been suffering from poor battery life for quite some time now, here are the screenshots, Android OS has been this high on almost all battery cycles.
I disabled wifi scanning as suggested above and will watch the performance, does the community have any other inputs to fix this? View attachment 4212978View attachment 4212979

Phone idle is always the biggest battery draw on my phone too. I have minimal apps too. No Facebook or similar types of apps. I'm on a Verizon V20 stock with the latest security update. Is this normal V20 behavior to have phone idle consume more battery than everything else?
how about doze mode , isnt that meant to help with this sort of problem ? ( my phone is currently on a ship )
Any update. İ have the same problem

So what did you do?
Would also be grateful if anyone shared a solution.
I specifically have a SIM-unlocked Sprint model (LS997) which am using in Europe with another carrier.
Using it in LTE preferred mode drains about 10-15% overnight.
Using it in WCDMA preferred mode drains up to 5% per night (yes, wifi and cellular data OFF and many apps greenified) . So I'm really interested in how this can be fixed and achieve 0% battery drain across several hours.
Or maybe it's SIM-unlocked Sprint ROM related?? I can't root my phone since it has the Feb 2017 patch and is a ZV6.
I suspect rooting it and using another ROM would solve this + the annoying issue of not being able to send images via FB Messenger and Viber while on cellular data (I imagine the Sprint guys placed some kind of restriction to deny media transfer for these apps when using cellular data).
I have noticed this too.. wondered why "phone idle" takes most battery... any suggestions would be great!
I am also curious about the solution. Phone Idle is at top. Even without SIM card. 30% drains during a night (everything is disabled, but no airplane mode is on). I tried factory reset, reinstall older ROM, replace battery, use no app but still sucks.
hi
my v20 phone battery draining was about 1% per hour before (about 7% totally ) and recently increased to 2% during sleeping time overnight. (draining 15% overnight in sleeping state)
it seems that during day either performance off battery is decreased.(about 5h with wifi and screen on usage)
Fast charging while second screen is On , is slower than when it is off therefore when second screen is Off , fast charging goes better . exactly , first 30 mins fast charging makes about 40% battery charge(instead of 50%) and after 60 min leads to 85% and full charging taking place after about 100 min instead of 80 mins.
another important thing is that sometimes shades have been seen on the LCD that many users have complained about it.
phone information is :
