Hands Free Activation boot loop - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Running rooted stock MF9
Hands free Activation runs, says it activates, trys to update the PRL. It says it fails and that device will restart. Reboots and does the same thing. How can I break this?

I can't make phone calls or receive texts. I tried a factory reset, still doing it.
Any help?

Not sure if this will help, but I found this on Sprint's website:
Manual programming
Only use manual programming if both hands free activation and one touch programming did not complete successfully on your Samsung Galaxy S®4.
Manually programming your device requires a 6-digit programming code and a 10-digit MSID. If your device was activated via www.sprint.com/activate, these codes may be found in the phone activation confirmation email or on the programming instructions page displayed after the activation was processed.
If this is a new line of service or you don't have these codes, make an appointment at a nearby Sprint store for assistance getting your device programmed.
From the home screen, tap Phone.
Dial ## followed by the 6-digit programming code followed by #. For example, ##123456#.
Tap Edit.
Tap MDN.
Enter the 10-digit phone number (MDN).
Tap OK.
Tap MSID.
Enter the 10-digit MSID.
Tap OK.
Tap the Back key.
Tap Done.
Your device restarts.
From the home screen, tap Apps.
Scroll to and tap Settings.
Tap More.
Scroll to and tap System Update.
Tap Update Profile.
After the update is complete, tap OK.
You've now completed manual programming.

Thank you
I activated my phone at a Sams Cub, so SOL on that front. I'm gonna Odin complete stock tomorrow, and take it to the sprint store.
I didn't even do anything to the phone. Forgot to plug it in last night, and put it on the charger in the morning and it was doing that.

Alright. Use Triangle Away if you need too, otherwise they might not accept the phone!

it always comes out "HANDS FREE ACTIVATION" and is not activated .. like I can erase that since I do not live in United States ..
or could activate it from my house (Chile) ... I hope to help please ..

have kind of the same problem with my htc m8 for sprint i already root it and it sads hands free activation then check for prl said success then the phone restarts then does the same thing over and over and over

One thing that SHOULD solve this is manually inputting your MDN and MIN in some kind of CDMA tool. If you've done a ##72786# or if the phone somehow freaked out and did it, you're going to need the carrier partition from another L720 to load onto yours. Sorry, the answers aren't quite "easy"

For those with the gps reset issue! Solution found!

This has been confirmed to work with both me and a friend of mine.
Let me know if it works for you!!
I hate doing hard resets, so I'm very happy this worked!!!
Call Sprint and get your MSL Unlock Code. It's a six number code.
Instructions:
Go to the phone dialer, and dial ##GPSCLRX#
Then, input the 6 character number code, and press OK.
The phone will soft reset, and GPS will be working splendidly!!!!!

my phone is still rebooting
I know this is an old post.. but what issue is this exactly? I have a problem where if I turn my GPS on after having it off for a while, it takes forever before I can actually use the GPS feature (i.e. for navigation). Is this what this post is referring to?
Easier way to get the MSL is to download the app MSL Reader.

The issue is that the device will reset itself when you are using GPS. For example, my device often will reset itself when I am using GPS and I take an incoming call. I am able to take the call, but the phone will reset after 1-2 minutes of talk time. I applied this fix yesterday and am interested to see what the results are.

Hopefully you don't have the rebooting issue. Glad it worked! Sprint acts like the world will end by giving you the code.
I thought the latest OTA was supposed to fix this. I, personally, have not done the update as it has some audio restart problems. So i do plan on trying this fix.

Yeah it seemed to fix it for me.
I also turned off the GPS location stuff too. Not sure if that made any difference.
I tried every suggestion to fix my GPS reboot issue, the ##gpsclrx#, in various combinations with removing applications, full factory reset, different ROMS, etc.
Final solution was to replace the device (my HW002 with a new HW004), I'm pleased to say I reinstalled all my apps and the problem has been solved. Definitely was a hardware problem.
Silver lining is that I now have a new "ePod" (my old EVO), I listen to Pandora all day at work via WiFi on my old device, I can keep it plugged in and connected to my Bluetooth speaker without having to interrupt for calls.

[Q] Anyway to get past droid Setup/Activation Screen

I have a droid 2 which has never been activated on any service.. is there anyway to get past the first screen which says you need to activate service, it will only do emergancy dial or try to call verizon for activation..
Trying to get into settings etc.. So I can try and attempt a flash to another carrier
Well im not sure how to get by this but you will only be able to use sprint as your other carrier if this does happen to work. Just fyi. Unless things have changed....
At the droid welcome screen where it tells you to touch to begin you need to touch all 4 corners of the screen one after the other. I can't quite remember the order but just fiddle with it and it will skip it.

Yep, touch upper left corner, upper right corner, lower right corner, then lower left corner.
Thanks for the reply.. got past it with that method
and to above poster who said I could only use sprint as the other carrier.. I am on Cricket(Work for them).. Unlimited Android plan for 55$ a month.. cant beat it.. I just took the PRL from my other Cricket Android(Sanyo ZIO M6000).. Talk Text and WEB, all working fine, still trying to figure out how to get Picture messaging to work. But even if I cant, it is no big deal to me as I can send it all through gmail..
Thanks again for the help guys.
For the picture messaging, you might want to try the service menu (dial ##PROGRAM) and check for the SMS/MMS settings. I was mucking in there today and saw some settings that made me think that I could do good or evil with. Let us know if you try and what you find out!

I Odined my Epic inside the Sprint store!

Basically the story goes that i recently switched from the Epic to the Sidekick 4G with T-Mobile. When i ported my # over to Tmo, the service on the Epic was automatically cancelled..... the account is in my girl's name, and she immediately calls up Sprint to reinstate service on the line, with a new #. Cool, so Sprint sets it all up on their end, but.... no service on the Epic. So we bring it in and see what they can do, and they say it is all set up in the system..... so the guy tries a factory reset.
Well I had midNIGHT 5.2 with the Honeycomb Fusion theme loaded on the Epic(the guy doesn't know the difference), and the phone gets caught in a bootloop on the boot animation, lol. i end up telling him that the phone was rooted, etc., so he says basically it's up to me to work whatever "magic" on it that i can. (Yeah, i considered playing dumb and trying to get a new phone from them, but i had bought the thing off Craigslist, and never had any warranty papers or insurance. plus, that's dishonest ) So i actually get my laptop from the car, and plop down on their couch, and Odin stock EB13 on the phone. The guy was super cool, and in fact was amazed at what i was doing..... he even whispers to me to ask if i would root his Evo!
Anyway, even with stock EB13, the phone doesn't connect, which i suspected because i already had tried that in the beginning. So i figure maybe the phone needs to be on DI18 for it to connect. i realize that i had gotten a new laptop and had only downloaded EB13 and EC05, so i was gonna need to download DI18 off XDA. After trying unsuccessfully to get internet service in the store(great advertising for Sprint internet service, lol), i head off the my doctor's appointment, and download it in the waiting room. While waiting for the doctor to look at my hurt back, I Odin DI18 and BAM, the phone number changes on the phone, and phone and texting work! No 3G however..... i did see 3G for a second but it dissappeared..... 4G worked great.
So i figure I'd bring it back to the store to let those guys see what they could do.... and to show them that it did indeed connect once back on DI18. The guy gives the Epic it to his female colleague who does another factory reset and successfully updates the PRL, and the 3G starts working.
So anyway, who knows.... maybe something is screwed with the whole Froyo thing, and the Epic can only be activiated on DI18? In any case, i think i made that guy's day, showing him in person what you can do with your Android phone!

VERY true! The Epic was WAY bloated, ran hot and drained battery like crazy, out of the box. Not to mention the keyboard lag, etc etc. Don't know what we would have done without you kOnane, as far as Carrier IQ discovery and removal, and everything else. Kudos to all the devleopers here!
And what's the deal with my Epic not activating until it was set back to DI18? Is that standard for the phone?

Yeah, I hear ya, there are almost always pros and cons. The only thing I personally am missing is the Epic screen..... the SK screen is nice, but obviously a good amount smaller. Also, the Tmobile 2 gig/month cap on 4G speeds is potentially a bother. Other than that, I'm fine. Do you still have your Epic just in case?
When I swapped phones, we contacted sprint chat support and they walked us through manually updating the phone# from the service programming screens:
Agent (Jolly S): "At the phone dialer, press ## followed by 6-digit followed by an additional #.
Example: ##******#.
Last # entered will not show on display.
Service Program screen will be displayed, highlighted on View."
Agent (Jolly S): "Tap Edit."

Agent (Jolly S): "Tap Touch Here, then enter Mobile Directory Number (MDN) and tap Return."
Agent (Jolly S): "*********7"
Agent (Jolly S): "Use virtual keyboard to type 10-digit MSID, then tap Return.
*********9"
Agent (Jolly S): "With correct MDN and MSID entered, tap Done."
Agent (Jolly S): "After phone reboots, update profile via Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Update Profile.
Once complete, phone is fully activated and ready to use.
After that it connected and activated immediately. The dialer codes and stuff were removed automatically from my transcript but I'm sure they can be found on XDA easily enough.

How to reset phone 'User name'

I bought my housemate a used epic to replace his palm pre until we can look at the note or galaxy nexus later this year. So far registration with sprint has gone fine - they said the ESN was clear and it's been bound to his account without a problem.
The issue is that the data connection is stuck saying 'error 67: username/password may be incorrect'. Looking through "phone settings -> about phone -> system status" shows his phone number and MSID according to what sprint told us, but the 'user name' is still apparently the previous user and a factory reset via the menus and even a full wipe/repartition back to EC05 via odin doesn't get rid of this.
Is there anything we can do here at home or is the only option going to be to go into a sprint store directly?
Try updating Profile. If that don't work then Sprint will have to walk you through a hard reset. You will need advanced tech support for that.
The profile update failed twice on the phone with tech support, took about 5 minutes and timed out with username/passwd failure. We also tried dialing in some numbers on the keypad ##somenumbers#, edit the phone number and MSID by hand, saved and rebooted.
It is definitely a provisioning error. Make sure you are in a strong 3G signal area and try the profile update a few more times. If the tech can't make it stick you probably have to bring it in to a store.
Nevermind.. it's been about half an hour since the last attempt, we tried again with updating the profile and it went through that time. We're all good here! Thanks for the feedback though :]

Glad you got it working.
Make sure is old device is powered off. Power his new novice off for more than 60 seconds to clear the VLR (this is network side). Power device in and then dial ##72786#, follow on screen prompts. You will need your msl. You used this to program your msn and MSID earlier. This will clear your device radio without wiping all user data. After it is done it will try to iota. If it times out again, esn swap to another device wait 5min and the swap back to his epic. You can do the swap on the website. This should get you going. Hopefully you won't have to do the swaps. Also make sure your signal strength is better than -101dbm.
Edit - guess you got it before I finished typing. Glad it's working.

[Q] Turn off Roaming Guard for phone calls

How do I turn the Roaming Guard off for Voice? When I tell the phone I want it to roam for data and voice, it automatically turns on the roaming guards for both. However, I cannot uncheck them because they are greyed out/unselectable. When I make a data connection while roaming, it warns me but gives me a check box to check if I don't want to see that message again. I check the box and go back to roaming guards and the greyed out Data guard is then turned off.
However, when I make or recieve phone calls while roaming, I get the roaming guard warning but no prompt or check box to turn the message off in the future.
Do others see the roaming guards as greyed out as well? Is there anyway to force that warning off? I'm not rooted yet as I'm still inside my 14 day exchange window.
They are greyed out for me as well. I haven't made a call yet while roaming, but I did get the same option for data that you got.
Thanks. Well that sucks if we're not able to turn it off! I just got off the line with Sprint and they tell me the roaming gaurds should not be greyed out. They could not confirm it on an S4 as they didn't have one handy (!), but did confirm it on an S3. I make a lot of phone calls while roaming, so this could be a deal breaker for me on the S4. That would suck as I'm pretty pleased with the phone otherwise.
How about folks with the new MDL update? Can you tell us if the roaming guards are greyed out on that level also?
Are you speaking about the GSM section?
I have 3 sections in my Roaming Guard, Domestic CDMA, International CDMA and GSM. I'm concerned with the Domestic CDMA, but all of mine are greyed out except for Outgoing SMS under the International CDMA section.

Thanks. But I do not know what an RTN Reset is. I searched the forum, but didn't find any hits for that term.
So before you did the reset, those were greyed out? And the reset made them selectable? If so, it'd be interesting to know what is causing this issue.

Alright then... i might just wait untill i install a custom rom so that way it'll be as easy as possible
I believe I found the culprit. I have been checking the roaming guard as I rebuilt my phone. All was fine until I did the clear data and force stop on the Google Services Framework. I did that a few minutes ago to try and force the OTA update (which I've not been able to do) and now my roaming guard selections are greyed out again. Damn. Another hard reset.
I'm not rooted, so what is the best way to backup my phone's apps so they get restored at the push of a button?
Confirm RTM worked for me as well
I had the same problem with my Galaxy S4 (Sprint) and I can confirm that performing that the RPM fixes it as long as you perform it when you're NOT on roaming. I'm pretty sure this bug comes out when you initially activate your device while on roaming. Regardless, here are the steps again with a little extra detail:
Call Sprint Customer Service and ask for your MTL code
Use helium/carbon or another app to backup your AppData if your phone isn't rooted.
Open the Dialer app
Press ##786#
Enter your MTL code
Press "Reset"
Press OK and let the device perform factory reset.
When it's totally started up again (after the Samsung and Google sign-ins), download helium
Connect your phone to your computer and launch helium/carbon desktop app
Once the app says Helium enabled, restore all your programs and their respective app data. Note this works for NON-ROOTED devices
